  • Windows 7 – Send Files To Any Application via Right Click Menu

    Modify Windows 7’s “Send To” menu to send files to other applications including Notepad.

    Since many file types do not have associated programs and you may not want to set up associations for all of them, it may prove useful to try determining the contents by viewing or editing such files in Notepad or another text editor.

    To aid with this, right-click on a file in Windows 7 and a “Send To” menu appears. Select this option and you can copy the file to the Desktop as a shortcut, compress the file, send it to an attached CD/DVD drive (if applicable), and other options may be present.     For security, it is important to be able to view file extensions when browsing through folders in Windows 8. For example, a miscreant may send you a file named fireworks.jpg that you think is a harmless .JPG photo, yet actually is fully named fireworks.jpg.exe, containing a virulent payload that could harm your machine, data, and/or privacy.

  • Windows 8 – WordPad: Disable Spacing After Paragraphs

    Prevent WordPad from adding extra space after paragraphs that might cause problems when exporting to .TXT format.

    By default, when writing documents in WordPad in Windows 8, an extra 10 pt of spacing is added after each paragraph for stylistic reasons. This way one does not have to press Enter twice after the end of each paragraph for space to appear between.

    There may be times, however, where you find this behavior annoying. Perhaps you are writing a document in WordPad and need to save a copy in .TXT format. In this case, your paragraphs will appear one line after the next, without any spacing, because this 10pt of spacing is not converted to a line break. Or maybe you edit all of your text documents in WordPad because you like the zoom features or ability to quickly change the font via the Ribbon.     Windows 8 will attempt to defragment current and newly-connected drives on a schedule – learn how to turn this off.

    By default, Windows 8 will attempt to defragment, or optimize, your hard disks and partitions every week, an often useful tasks that can speed up your computer by moving data around.

    You might determine that certain external hard disks should not be optimized on a schedule, instead choosing to optimize them on an as-needed basis. Also, defragmenting a solid state drive is not recommended and can actually shorten its lifespan.
