Windows XP is dead. Long live Windows XP ‘Bliss’

16 Apr

In 2001 Microsoft released the Windows XP operating system and with it an iconic desktop photograph. Referred to as ‘Bliss’, the lush landscape of rolling grass hills and a crystal-blue sky has, to Microsoft’s estimation, been seen by at least a billion people. To celebrate the retiring of the XP operating system, Microsoft tracked down the original photographer and talked to him about the shot. Learn more

lumia9301.jpg

Nokia has launched a new high-end smartphone. The Lumia 930 is the international version of the Lumia Icon that was launched a few weeks ago as an exclusive model for U.S. carrier Verizon. Looking at the specifications, the 930’s camera module appears to be identical to the unit used in Nokia’s 6-inch phablet, the Lumia 1520. The 1/2.5-inch BSI CMOS sensor offers 20MP and the F2.4 aperture is combined with an optical image stabilization system and a dual-LED flash. Learn more

Weekly Photography Challenge – Cats in Windows

18 Jan

Earlier today I shared a collection of images of cats. Cats in windows, cats in doors, cats doing what they do best – mostly lounging around!

By Kazutaka Sawa

Even if you aren’t a “cat” person this week I challenge you to get past that and go find some cats to photograph. An empty windowsill is just that – empty – without a cat sitting on the ledge. A doorway and stoop, missing something without a feline resident taking sentinel position.

I find that many times when I am photographing doors and windows (two of my favourites, check the collection from last week to see my other one) I am most attracted to the ones with a small fur-ball in the scene.

By Ste Pagna

I just love the pair in the image above! You can’t help but wonder what trouble they’ve done. Great camera angle, use of humor, lighting – it all works and is simple.

Now it’s your turn. Show me your cat photos. Bonus points if they are NOT your cats.

Share your cats in windows photos!

Once you’ve taken your ‘cat’ photos we’d love to see them in comments below. Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.

Today’s Dose of Cuteness – a Collection of Cats in Windows and Doors

17 Jan

By Franck Vervial

Last week I came clean on my obsession with bicycles. My other two favourite things to photograph are doors and windows. What better than if they have a cat in them!?

The French Cat

I have two crazy cats that make me laugh every day. If you’re a cat or pet owner you’ll understand. Even if you don’t have a cat you have to admit, putting one in a window or on the windowsill sort of completes the image, right? Cats can be annoying, cute, or elegant. They have personality. Not everyone is a “cat person” but approach it from a photographic perspective. They can add to the composition!

A student in one of my photography classes showed me this book and I had to get a copy for myself! It resides by my bedside table.

So this week I went in search of cat images. Here’s what I found.

Talking Windows: Trains Deliver Ads Directly into Your Head

26 Oct

[ By Delana in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

marketing through bone conduction ads

Television, radio, the internet, billboards, newspapers, magazines, malls, supermarkets…wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, it’s highly likely that at least a few  companies are trying to market their products to you every moment. A quiet train ride and a nice nap used to be a welcome escape from the cacophony of consumerism, but soon even your commute-time nap may be filled with the sounds of advertisements.

bone conduction train ads

The German branch of ad company BBDO has tested a form of bone conduction technology on a train between Munich and North Rhine-Westphalia. When a commuters rest their heads against a window, hoping to catch a few winks before getting to their destination, ads which were previously inaudible suddenly begin playing inside their heads.

The technology works by using high-frequency transmitters to send sounds through the train’s windows. If you aren’t touching the window you can’t hear the ads at all. But lean your head against the window and the sounds are loud and clear, having been transmitted through your skull and directly to your inner ear. It’s the same concept that makes bone-conduction headphones and hearing aids work.

talking train window advertisements

Although BBDO has no current plans to actually put the technology into use, the fact that it was tried out successfully may mean that this type of marketing will soon be used on a wider scale. We have a feeling commuters would object to the practice of advertisements invading their sleep, but if trains played relaxing music or important travel information in this manner it would be much easier to get behind the idea.

Windows of New York: Weekly Documentary Design Project

05 Jun

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

windows of new york

Fascination bleeds into fixation in this wonderful ongoing series of illustrations by a graphic designer who enjoys the nuances of fenestration in his favorite city.

windows art project

Each piece in the series specifies not only the neighborhood (Hell’s Kitchen, West Village, East Village, Lower East Side, Alphabet City, SOHO, Williamsburg and more) but the actual address so truly curious fans can map out routes to find the source material.

windows graphic design series

From creator Jose Guizar, “The Windows of New York project is a weekly illustrated fix for an obsession that has increasingly grown in me since chance put me in this town. A product of countless steps of journey through the city streets, this is a collection of windows that somehow have caught my restless eye out from the never-ending buzz of the city. This project is part an ode to architecture and part a self-challenge to never stop looking up.”

windows illustrations look up

There is a consistency to the visual language (from shapes to color palette) employed in each piece, which only serves to highlight the surprise differences between the various windows featured. Hacks and modifications make their way into the images as well, from protective metal grating and air conditioners to window-hanging flower boxes and curious cats. Even former windows, now filled in with bricks, or covered by doors, are candidates.
