Tamron and Sigma offer firmware update service for Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R live view issues

26 Jun

Tamron and Sigma have both announced updates for their lenses to provide full compatibility with Canon’s EOS 5DS and 5DS R models. Both firmware updates refer to behavior in live view shooting, something that has also caused problems in the Rebel T6s and T6i. This suggests that Canon’s latest models feature a change in the way they drive lenses. Read more

NCTech announces single-shot 360 camera for Google Street View applications

10 Jun

UK imaging systems firm NCTech is to introduce a four-sensor, single-shot camera that it says can create a 360 degree image of a street scene or an interior in less than two minutes. The iris360 uses four lens units in front of four 10MP sensors arranged at 90 degree intervals, and images can be uploaded directly to Google Street View. The lenses are triggered simultaneously and the resultant images are stitched together automatically in-camera. Read more

Leica M Monochrom Type 246 offers live view and boosted ISO range

01 May

Leica has introduced an updated version of its black-and-white-only digital rangefinder. The M-Monochrom Typ 246 uses a full frame 24MP CMOS sensor that, like its predecessor, has no color filter array. The model that came before it used an 18MP CCD sensor, so the upgrade to a CMOS chip provides several improvements such as live view and video recording capabilities. Read more

Aerial View of South Platte River at Wildcat Mound below Platteville

12 Mar

A stretch of the South Platte River along Wildcat Mound below confluence with St Vrain Creek is my favorite river section for paddling. It can be accesswd from the county road 19.5 bridge on the St Vrain Creek (north of the power station). River access is relatively easy without a need to climb any fences. From here you have 1 mile of paddling to the confluence. This may be a start of a longer downriver trip or just downstream/upstream workout. The St Vrain current is pretty mild and you can easily paddle upstream. The South Platte is, in turn, much faster with some shallows and even little rock gardens (easy to navigate). It is more interesting for paddling downstream and more challenging for paddling upstream than the river section below Evans.

During my last trip (March 10, 2015) I shot some aerial pictures of the river at Wildcat Mound from a low flying drone. This place is about 1 mile below confluence. There is a shallow rapid just below the confluence. It gave a very good workout when I was paddling back upstream. River flow was ~120 cfs at St Vrain Cr and ~400cfs on South Platte at Ft Lupton (several diversion dams upstream).

For comparison you can check pictures from my packrafting trip in June, 2011. The 2013 flooding cleared all previous log jams on the St Vrain. You can still see these huge cottonwood trees in the water, but they do not block the river.

10 Vintage London Paintings Superimposed on Street View Images

09 Jan

london church street montage

Blending fiction and reality, art and history, this series of superimpositions takes ‘then-and-now’ imagery all the back to the 18th Century on the streets and rivers of England’s capital city. Most of the added classics (spliced with Google Street View shots) are largely unedited, a few are strategically cropped but many show a naturally stark contrast in colors, tones, lighting, and of course: street life.

london historical street view

london history meets modernity

Collected and collaged by Halley Docherty, these hybrids show historical structures in their built environments like St. Martin in the Fields, shown at the top (painting by William Logsdail in 1888), a church situated on the opposite side of Trafalgar Square to Northumberland House, pictured directly below (painted by Canaletto in 1752 and since demolished).

london ships boats river

Various views of the River Thames show how the riverfronts, skylines, ships and boats and shifted in type and number over time, or highlight key points and storytelling scenes of local history set against the everyday backdrop captured by Street View vans.

Many major streets are shown at least partly as they were, albeit with some embellishments or artistic license here and there, as well as the vehicles and people that populated them (just surrounded by contemporary persons and contexts).

Other paintings shown in this collection include: A View of Greenwich from the River by Canaletto (1750–52), Blackman Street London by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1885), View of The Grand Walk by Canaletto (1751), The 9th of November, 1888 by William Logsdail (1890), The Strand Looking East from Exeter Exchange by Anonymous (1822), Covent Garden Market by Balthazar Nebot (1737), The River Thames with St. Paul’s Cathedral on Lord Mayor’s Day by Canaletto (1746) and Westminster Abbey with a Procession of Knights of the Bath by Canaletto (1749).

Airball with a View: Play in the World’s Sexiest Car Park

23 Dec

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

airball 1

When a parking garage is considered a landmark in itself and used as the setting for fashion shows, music videos and orchestral performances, perhaps it’s no surprise that people are happy to hang out there for hours on end playing airbag. 1111 Lincoln Road by Swiss architecture firm Herzog de Meuron is a work of modern art, so it was a natural setting for Snarkitecture to show off some of their own designs.

airball 2 airball 3

Known for unexpected installations and temporary works of architecture, the Brooklyn-based collaborative practice set up a bright white game room on level 5 of the carpark, inviting users to play ball and compete side-by-side on two fully-custom basketball arcade-style shootout games.

airball 4 airball 6

Of course, what takes this installation to the next level isn’t just the fact that it’s located in a parking garage – it’s the stunning views of the Miami skyline that guests take in as they play. No worries about losing your ball over the side, as there are safety nets in place.

The garage itself is famed for appearing incredibly light despite its concrete construction, influenced by designer Jacques Herzog’s perception of Miami as “all muscle without cloth.” Some of the levels feature triple-height ceilings to accommodate special events with the city’s Art Deco district as a backdrop.

Weekly Photography Challenge Bird’s Eye View

22 Nov

Earlier I shared a collection of photos shot from above using a bird’s eye view. In the photography challenge last week you were assigned to photograph from a worm’s eye view or low down. This week you will be looking down, using the bird’s eye view to create your images.

Bird’s eye view

Bird’s are usually flying overhead or sitting up high on a wire looking down on us. So try something to get that kind of perspective in your image this week. Get up high and look down. That could mean:

  • Climb to a roof or the top of a hill and look down
  • Stand on a chair to photograph something on the floor
  • Just simply being aware of what is below your eye level and shoot that
  • If you really want to go for it take a hot air balloon, fly a quadcopter or GoPro, or even take a gondola ride

You get the idea right? Get up – and look down!

Share your bird’s eye view images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge.

34 Vertigo Inducing Bird’s Eye View Photos

21 Nov

Last week I rounded up a bunch of worm’s eye view images so this week we’re going the other way and taking the high road with bird’s eye view photos. Angle of view and perspective use is a great way to make more interesting images. As you might suspect bird’s eye view photos are taken from above, look down on the subject. That could mean standing on a chair, climbing a ladder, shooting from a rooftop or even a mountain top.

Enjoy these bird’s eye view photos and allow them to inspire you:

Weekly Photography Challenge Worm’s Eye View

15 Nov

This week I rounded up a bunch of images taken low to the ground, otherwise known as worm’s eye view. It’s not a common view that people see, so images you create shot from this angle have a unique look and pique interest with viewers. Your job is to take on this low down task and shoot from the ground level. Here are some examples for you:

There’s no special equipment needed to do this, or magical subject matter. Even the most ordinary objects can be made to look interesting when photographed from the worm’s eye view. So it’s your turn.

Weekly photography challenge – worm’s eye view

So get down on your hands and knees, don’t be afraid to get dirty, and get as low to the ground as you can (and still be able to get up again). You might find things down there you haven’t noticed before, perhaps even in your own home or back yard. Like macro photography that makes you look for tiny subjects, getting down on the ground has a similar benefit and you start to see things you’d otherwise miss. Give it a try.

Share your worm’s eye view images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge.
