7 September, 2013 – A Free Video Interview with Thomas Knoll

07 Sep

Thomas Knoll is the co-inventor of Photoshop. We have just placed on-line a free 47 minute long streaming video interview between Thomas, Michael and Kevin.

In it Thomas talks about the origins of Photoshop, the concerns that people have had with moving to "the cloud", and the new solution for photographers which Adobe has just announced.

This is both an informative and timely discussion.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

Impressive Raw video sample from EOS-7D using Magic Lantern

06 Aug

7d_raw_video.jpg

Magic Lantern has been enhancing the features of Canon EOS digital SLRs for some time now, most recently giving the EOS 5D Mark III a significant increase in dynamic range. One feature found in the second alpha version of their EOS 7D software adds the ability to capture Raw video, albeit at a relatively low 1736 x 1156 resolution. A 7D owner named Florian has put this feature to the test, by combining a series of DNG files into a 33 second video which looks fantastic. See the video for yourself after the break.

31 July, 2013 – The Digital Print – a review and video interview

31 Jul

Our friend and colleague Jeff Schewe has written a new book titled The Digital Print. It has just been published and is available as of today from leading book sellers.

We now have a review of the book online. The page also includes a ten minute long streaming video interview with Jeff conducted by Kevin Raber.

CTRL+Console: One Cool Video & Photo Editing App

CTRL+Console - Video and Photo Editing App

CTRL+Console – Video and Photo Editing App

I have become a huge fan of Kickstarter and every so often you find a real gem of a project. Sometime ago I stumbled on to the CTRL+Console app (download link) and loved the idea. If you’re unfamiliar with the project check out CTRL+Console Kickstarter page, but note it is no longer active. In short the app acts as a GUI to a variety of shortcuts in Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Quicktime and soon for Lightroom.

While a lot of Kickstarter projects feel or look like a do it yourself project this one is quite polished. The app was released yesterday on the Apple iTunes store and is now public. It is free to download with the Quicktime console being accessible out of the gate, but you’ll need to purchase/unlock additional editors with in the app. For the app to communicate with the programs on your computer you do need to download a program, but it’s of minimal effort to set up. Overall I think its a great concept and has been extremely well executed. To ground expectations though it did just come out and there are a couple of bugs for Windows users I hear, but they’re being tackled quickly.

One of the nicer touches that was included in the app for those that took part in funding the project was this very nice Thank You page in the app. Much to my surprise I actually found my name listed pretty quickly. A nice touch by Jeff Chow who made the app!
