  • Sony introduces HVL-F43M flash with Multi Interface Shoe, video lamp

    Sony today announced its new HVL-F43M flash. This flash, which replaces the HVL-F43AM and is compatible with Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe, which can be found on the modern SLT, NEX, and R-series cameras. Another new addition is a LED video lamp for brightening up subjects for still and video recording. The HVL-F43M retains the ‘Quick Shift Bounce’ feature of its predecessor, which allows you to rotate the flash 90 degrees for portrait shooting. The flash will be available in July for $ 400.

  • Instagram adds video functionality with image-stabilization

    Kevin Systrom, co-founder of Instagram, announced today that the app has been updated to include video capture, including a digital image-stabilization feature. While video clips are limited to only 15 seconds in total, multiple clips can be captured by pressing and holding the record icon, releasing the icon to pause and then recording additional scenes until the 15 second limit has been reached. In this first segment our hosts Jordan and Mark compare the results from a smartphone and an entry-level digital SLR in everyday shooting conditions such as low light, moving subjects and the challenge of capturing a flattering informal portrait.   • Get an Invisible Black Background to Your Portraits – Shooting Anywhere [VIDEO]

    In this video Glyn Dewis demonstrates how he gets his ‘Invisible Black Background’ effect when taking a portraits which will allow you to take a low key atmospheric portrait with a black background anywhere – even outdoors as he does in this video.

    To get the shot Glyn just uses his DSLR, a single Speedlight Flash, a cheap umbrella and a PocketWizard to trigger the flash (although you can do this with any method of triggering a remote flash that you have).

  • Magic Lantern enables Canon 50D raw video output

    Camera feature modifier Magic Lantern has piqued interest in the 5-year old Canon EOS 50D by enabling video recording on this previously stills-only camera. The development work is still in early stages, but a user has posted raw video footage at 1592 x 720 resolution at 24p.   • Panasonic updates 12-35mm F2.8 firmware to improve video stabilisation

    Panasonic has issued a firmware update for its Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm F2.8 ASPH Power OIS fast standard zoom for Micro Four Thirds cameras (H-HS12035). Version 1.2 improves the stability of the optical image stabilisation during movie recording. It’s available to download now from the LUMIX customer support site – click through for the link.

  • Canon creates ‘Video Camera X–series-look’ Picture Style for movie work

    Canon has created a ‘Video Camera X-series look’ Picture Style for its EOS cameras, specifically designed for movie work. As its name suggests, it’s designed to match the colour look of the company’s X-series professional camcorders. It produces low contrast, low saturation footage that’s better suited to post-production grading processes than the cameras’ existing options. It’s downloadable now from Canon’s website and can be installed on almost any Canon EOS model, from the movie-optimized EOS-1D C to the mirrorless EOS M.

  • Magic Lantern enables Canon 5D Mark III Raw video output

    Camera feature modifier Magic Lantern has developed a version of its software enabling 24fps Raw video output from the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. This news has grabbed videographers’ attention as it allows for individual frames of 14 bit output, yielding a much wider dynamic range than you’d get from standard 8 bit video files.
