VSCO releases Mobile Presets 02 pack for desktop users

VSCO, the art and technology company behind the mobile app of the same name, has launched Mobile Presets 02 (MP2) for its desktop users. This bundle is designed for photographers who’d rather edit their photos on desktop than mobile, offering a total of 55 presets for Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.

The company describes the MP2 bundle as ‘mobile emulation presets,’ enabling users to get the same looks on desktop that can be achieved using the company’s popular mobile app.

The MP2 bundle contains both original presets, such as the Low Contrast Series V1 through V8 packs, plus branded presets that were launched as limited-time downloads within the app. The branded presets include NikeLab ACG, Krochet Kids KK1 and KK2, Levi’s LV1 – LV3, TA-KU TK, and Neocha NC.

The presets can be used with Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CC and CS6, as well as Lightroom 4, 5, 6, and CC. VSCO is offering a $ 10 discount until September 10th via the coupon ‘VSAG17.’ The Mobile Presets 02 bundle costs $ 60 USD and is available through VSCO’s online store.

UK government will require drone users to register and take safety tests

The UK has announced new upcoming regulations that will require some drone owners to register their aircraft and to complete safety awareness tests related to drone operation.

The requirements will be implemented for all drones weighing a minimum of 250g / 8.8oz and registration will be possible both online and via apps, though the UK government says it is still exploring potential plans. The tests, meanwhile, will require drone operators to demonstrate knowledge of the UK’s various regulations related to drone usage, privacy, and safety.

The new requirements were detailed over the weekend by the UK government, which explained in a statement that these new measures will “improve accountability and encourage owners to act responsibly.” A recent safety research study is cited as one of the reasons for the planned regulations. In the study, various UK authorities found that drones weighing as little as 400g / 14oz can damage the windshields on helicopters.

Many details about the UK’s drone registration plans are still missing, including how much such registrations may cost, how long the registration is good for, the extent of identifying details the drone operator must provide, and more. The UK’s statement indicates that it is still developing its plans and hasn’t yet established these finer details.

The new regulations will follow the drone code established by the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority in 2016. That drone code establishes operational rules for drone owners, including requiring that the drone stay within sight of the operator, that it stay below 120m / 400ft, avoid all things related to airports and aircraft, and maintain acceptable distances from property and people.

Photobucket breaks billions of photos online, upsets millions of users

If you’re an avid Photobucket user, you woke up to a nasty surprise this past week: the photo storage and hosting service changed their terms, breaking billions of images online in one fell swoop, without so much as a courtesy notice.

Some explanation is probably in order.

Photobucket has been allowing free users to host and link to images on its servers since 2003. If you wanted to host your photos on Photobucket and display them on some 3rd party site (also known as hotlinking) you could do that without being a paying member. This is an extremely useful—not to mention bandwidth-intensive—service to offer, and it’s one of the reasons Photobucket has managed to amass over 10 billion photos uploaded to its servers by over 100 million users.

But starting last week, the company changed its terms and membership structure, and what once was free will now cost users a whopping $ 400 per year. Suddenly, billions of images Photobucket users had hotlinked online no longer showed up. Entire forum threads, like this one found the photo blog by PetaPixel, are now devoid of images.

Instead, you have this graphic on display… over and over:

As you can imagine, Photobucket users are not happy about the change. Any time a free service turns into a paid one there’s bound to be some griping, but going from free to $ 400/year is an extreme jump by any standard.

On the one hand, it’s easy to justify Photobucket’s decision from a business standpoint: advertising revenues are dropping, and hosting that many images has to be incredibly expensive. But doing it so suddenly, without so much as a courtesy warning, has users turning to social media to vent their frustration.

Some are calling it ‘blackmail’ and ‘extortion,’ others are saying it’s business suicide, and droves of users are bidding an angry farewell:

Whatever you want to call it, one thing is certain: making such a sweeping change without warning was the wrong call. You hear that noise? It’s the stampede of users running pell mell towards Imgur.

New Pro Light Bumblebee family from Manfrotto targets still, video and drone users

Manfrotto has introduced a new collection of outdoor backpacks and messenger bags that are designed to cope with extreme environments and to allow users to carry loads of kit. The largest backpack in the Pro Light Bumblebee series, the Bumblebee-230 PL can hold a DSLR with vertical grip with a 70-200mm F2.8 zoom attached as well as an extra ten lenses, according to Manfrotto.

The series comprises two backpacks and two messenger bags all of which can hold a laptop as well as cameras and lenses. The backpacks have configurable internal dividers so the main compartment can be arranged for high-end still or video cameras, lenses and accessories. These backpacks also have a tripod holder and the Bumblebee-230 PL features a lens pouch on the waistband strap.

The two messenger bags, the Bumblebee-M30 PL and M10 PL, can also be configured to hold a small gimbal with their XtraSecure handheld gimbal strap. The larger of the two, the M30 PL can also be used to carry a DJI Mavic plus the Osmo gimbal camera.

Samyang targets Sony E mount users with new 35mm F2.8 AF lens

Korean optical manufacturer Samyang has released details of its third AF lens – a full frame 35mm F2.8 lens designed for Sony E mount cameras. The company says the lens is tiny and lightweight to suit these smaller compact system cameras, and that these characteristics make it ideal for travel and street photography.

The Samyang 35mm F2.8 FE weighs 85g/3oz, measures 33mm/1.3in in length and uses seven elements in six groups. Finally! Sony NPA-MQZ1K Multi-Battery Adaptor Kit provides power for E-mount users

Announced alongside the a9 is an accessory that should excite existing E-mount camera owners, particularly videographers: the NPA-MQZ1K Multi-Battery Adaptor Kit. It comes with two of the new NP-FZ100 batteries and has space for another two. The kit not only works as a charging station for up to four Z type batteries, but also has a dummy battery that allows it to be used as an external power pack.

The unit is compatible not only with the a9 but also with the a7, a7R, a7S, a7 II, a7R II, a7S II, a6000, a6300, a6500, a5000, a5100 and RX10 III, providing up to 8x their current battery capacity. It includes tripod-style mounting sockets for attachment to a video rig.

The dummy battery is the same shape as the a9’s new ‘Z type’ battery but has an outer shell that can be removed, revealing a ‘W type’ adapter, which can slot into cameras that use the NP-FW50 battery.

ONA releases new style bags and accessories for mirrorless users

Premium camera bag brand ONA has announced a set of new small bags and a wrist strap that are aimed at compact system camera users. The Bond Street is an upright bag designed to hold a single body and a couple of lenses, or three or four lenses while the camera is in use or on a strap. The bag has a large flap-over cover which is secured with a locking clasp, while the padded interior comes with a single adjustable divider. ONA offers the Bond Street in black or ‘antique cognac’ leather, or in a ‘smoke’ grey waxed canvas.

A second bag, called the Beacon, is shaped more like a tripod case, but features a pair of zip-up compartments for lenses, accessories or small cameras. Three dividers allow the bag to be converted from a single compartment to four, so a small tripod can be accommodated or four CSC-style lenses. The case has a carry handle as well as a removable shoulder strap, and is made from black ballistic nylon with leather trim.

The company is also to begin sales of a leather wrist strap called Kyoto, which it says is strong enough to support cameras up to 6lbs – though it has been tested to 10lbs. The underside of the strap, which ONA says is made from the same leather as is used for its bags, is suede-lined for comfort. The Kyoto comes in black, ‘dark truffle, and ‘antique cognac’.

The Bond Street bag is set to cost $ 219, while the Beacon will be $ 149. The Kyoto wrist strap will be priced at $ 49. All will be available from January 31st.

Google Pixel users reporting camera app issue

Google’s Pixel smartphones come with a range of innovative imaging technology and currently occupy the number one spot in the DxOMark smartphone ranking. However, shortly after the device launch some users reported a strong tendency of the Pixel camera to produce lens flare, and now it appears some devices are having trouble with the camera app, as well. 

In the Google Product Forum a number of users are reporting that their camera app is frequently crashing, sometimes showing pink and purple vertical lines. It appears the issue is mainly impacting international devices when the phone is in an area with poor signal reception. The error does not occur when flight mode is activated.

Google support staff has been instructing users who are experiencing the issue to clear the cache and data, and factory reset the device. However, none of these measures has solved the problem. It appears performing a soft reset by holding the volume down and power keys is currently the only way to get your device up and running again when the issue occurs.

We are currently testing the Google Pixel XL for our full review and, luckily, have so far not experienced the problem. That said, we hope Google can come up with a quick solution, possibly a software update, to help the affected users.

GoPro compensates Karma drone users with free HERO5 cam for recall

At the beginning of November action-cam maker GoPro announced a recall of its new Karma drone after a small number of the approximately 2500 units sold lost power during operation. GoPro stressed that even those users whose drones appeared to be operating normally should stop using them immediately. 

Now at least US buyers of the Karma will receive some sort of compensation for going through the troubles of returning the drone and having to find a replacement. GoPro is offering American Karma buyers a free HERO5 Black action cam once they return the drone and all accessories. Presumably, apart from making customers happy, this move should also speed up the return process and ensure as many of the faulty drones as possible make it back to GoPro. The company says it is planning to start shipping the Karma again as soon as the issue is resolved.
