Dpreview Users’ Poll: Best Camera of 2012?

Well, hasn’t 2012 gone by quickly? We’re nearly at the end of another year, and 2012 was one of the busiest that we can remember, as camera manufacturers regained some momentum after the worst of the economic downturn and various natural disasters. This year saw a lot of innovation and movement at the top of the ranges of biggest camera manufacturers, making it a fantastic year for photo enthusiasts and reviewers alike (even if we are completely exhausted at this point). So at the end of an incredibly busy year we want to know which cameras stood out for you. Click through for a link to our end-of-year poll.

Carl Zeiss announces 2012 photo competition for users of its lenses

Carl Zeiss has announced its annual photo contest for images shot with one of its lenses. Any Zeiss lens is considered valid, from Nokia smartphones through Sony compacts, such as the RX100, to the company’s high-end interchangeable lenses. This year’s theme is ‘The moment that knows no limits’ and first prize is one of the company’s manual focus SLR and rangefinder lenses, with a variety of other Zeiss-branded prizes for runners-up. The contest runs on Flickr until January 15th.

Flickr introduces users to Aviary as Picnik ends

Flickr has added the option to use the Aviary photo editing service, following Google’s decision to close the Picnik service that had previously been offered. Flickr users will be able to make basic edits and image corrections using Aviary which, unlike Picnik, is HTML 5-based – allowing its use on non-Flash devices such as the iPad. However, while Aviary offers similar cropping, filter and sticker options, it loses Picnik’s paintable curves adjustments and other more advanced options.

Sony offers NEX-5N adjustment for users experiencing video clicking

Sony has posted a note on its support site saying it will modify NEX-5N cameras of users troubled by clicking noises during video recording. The company points out that the phenomenon only occurs: ‘if the camera undergoes sudden motion while recording; motion generally inconsistent with smooth video recording.’ But has said it will make an ‘adjustment’ to the cameras (during the warranty period) of users who feel they’re likely to encounter the issue. The company doesn’t say that only people combining jogging with their videography need apply, but…

[MODIFIED] Mozilla Firefox – Misc – Display Text in the Toolbar for New Users

Make Mozilla Firefox even easier to use for newbies or those with lots of add-ons by labeling toolbar icons. This also displays dedicated “Reload” and “Stop” buttons.

Normally, Mozilla Firefox’s toolbar contains icons that do not contain labels. For example, the arrow pointing left goes to the previous page, and the house goes to the home page.

While these icons are recognizable to frequent web browser users, newbies may not know what each button does. Or, if you have a lot of add-ons installed that place buttons in the toolbar, it may prove difficult to remember what functionality is performed by clicking each button. Thus you can label each button with “Back”, “Forward”, “Home”, etc. This also gives you dedicated “Reload” and “Stop” buttons….
