Peak Design unveils redesigned ‘Greatest Hits’: All new Clip, Slide and Slide Lite

Peak Design—the makers of top rated and much loved camera accessories that have raised nearly $ 15 million on Kickstarter since their first got into crowdfunding—have just launched a special ‘greatest hits’ 5-day Kickstarter campaign to fund their latest products: a totally redesigned Capture Camera Clip and revamped Slide and Slide Lite camera straps.

The campaign launched this morning, and already Peak Design is racing towards its funding goal at record speed—which was, after all, the point.

“We wanted to bring these redesigned products back to Kickstarter because our backer community brought them to life in the first place,” says Adam Saraceno, Peak Design’s Marketing Director. “We also wanted to get gear into folks’ hands before the end of the year. These are busy times so we opted to keep our Kickstarter short and sweet.”

Capture Camera Clip

First up, the one that started it all: The Peak Design Capture Camera Clip. The first product Peak Design launched on Kickstarter, the Capture clip is a staple in many a photographers’ camera bag (or rather ON their camera bag), but the original design needed some love.

Enter former Apple design engineer Max Maloney, who took some time to show us the improvements they’ve made on the Clip at PhotoPlus this year.

The clip has been totally redesigned to be smaller, sleeker, and more functional all at the same time. It now features an all aluminum built (no plastic parts in sight), a lighter and smaller build that should still fit on almost any belt or backpack strap out there, an embeddable grip on the backplate so you don’t have to tighten the thing so much for it to stay in place, and a much sleeker profile that’s less likely to snag on clothing or gear.

Slide and Slide Lite

The Capture v3 is probably the most exciting ‘Greatest Hits’ release, but for those of you who love Peak Design’s camera straps, the Slide and Slide Lite revamp is definitely worth looking into.

The Slide (meant for DSLRs) and Slide Lite (meant for mirrorless cameras) are some of Peak Design’s most popular camera straps, and now they’ve been upgraded with updated dual adjusters that keep a lower profile, a new anchor mount for ‘low-profile connection point to bottom of camera’, smooth and durable nylon webbing for easier adjustment, and updated anchor connectors for easier one-handed use.

Hasselblad unveils 135mm F2.8 for X1D, promises 80mm with fastest aperture yet

Medium format camera and lens maker Hasselblad has released its XCD lens roadmap for 2018, revealing the nine total lenses that will be available for X1D-50c shooters by the end of next year. Mainly, the company has added two new models to the system in the shape of a 135mm F2.8 with a built-in teleconverter, and what it is describing as an 80mm with the widest aperture Hasselblad has ever produced.

In addition, Hasselblad has altered the spec of its already announced 22mm wide lens. It will now come to market as a 21mm F4 after a slight change of plan in what Hasselblad says is a response to feedback from customers.

The new XCD 135mm F2.8 is due to arrive in the first half of 2018, and will come with a built-in 1.7x converter that will transform the lens into a 230mm F4.8. With the sensor of the X1D, this lens will deliver the same sort of angle of view we’d expect from a 110mm lens on a full-frame system, while with the converter that becomes just over 180mm.

The maximum aperture of the promised 80mm hasn’t been disclosed, but if it is to be the widest aperture Hasselblad has ever produced it will need to be wider than the F2 of the 110mm Planar T*. The company has said more will be revealed closer to the launch date at the end of 2018.

Aperture details of the forthcoming XCD 35-75mm zoom and the XCD 65mm have also been released, with the zoom varying between F3.5 and F4.5, and the 50mm-equivalent focal length coming in at F2.8. Prices are also to be released at a later date.

Hasselblad expands the XCD lens range to a total of nine lenses in 2018

Hasselblad updates the XCD lens roadmap for the award-winning X1D-50c with the XCD 135mm and the 80mm lenses, rapidly expanding the XCD lens range to a total of nine dedicated lenses. By end of 2018 X1D users will have a wide range of lens options to maximize their creative vision.

The XCD 135mm f/2.8 lens comes with a dedicated 1,7x converter that extends the tele lens to 230mm f/4.8, while the XCD 80mm is set to become the highest aperture lens that Hasselblad has ever introduced.

In addition to these two new lenses, the previously announced XCD 22mm ultra-wide-angle lens has been updated to 21mm to meet the Hasselblad users’ demand for a better wide-angle lens experience.

Like the other XCD lenses, all new XCD lenses have an integral central shutter offering a wide range of shutter speeds and full flash synchronisation up to 1/2000th second.

Hasselblad is also releasing aperture details for previously announced XCD lenses: the XCD 21 ultra-wide-angle lens will feature f/4.0, the XCD 35-75mm zoom lens will have f/3.5-4.5, and the XCD 65mm lens will have f/2.8.

All new XCD lenses, besides XCD 80mm, are expected to be available during the first half of 2018, while the XCD 80mm high aperture featuring lens is planned for the second half of 2018.

The demand for the previously announced XCD 120mm macro lens and the XH lens adapter exceeded Hasselblad’s expectations, but the production is now being ramped up and orders are being fulfilled globally.

In addition to the nine dedicated XCD lenses, the XH lens adapter allows the X1D owners to use all twelve HC/HCD lenses.

Macphun unveils Luminar 2018, takes on Adobe Lightroom CC

Macphun—the photo editing software company that will rename itself ‘Skylum’ at the end of the year—has just unveiled the latest version of its full-featured photo editing suite Luminar. Meet Luminar 2018: a photo editor and (eventually) digital asset manager that seeks to compete with Adobe’s Lightroom at a time when many Lightroom users are looking for an out.

Available for pre-order starting today, Luminar 2018 features speed improvements, a dedicated RAW develop module, LUT support, AI-powered filters that can do some strange/interesting things like create intelligent light rays, and a digital asset management system (coming soon) that will allow you to organize your photo library sans subscription.

X-Rite unveils i1Studio: An all-in-one spectrophotometer that can calibrate all your devices

X-Rite has launched the i1Studio, an all-in-one spectrophotometer designed to make it easy to color calibrate a variety of devices—including projectors, scanners, monitors, printers, and mobile devices. The spectrophotometer is joined by new i1Studio software, the ColorTRUE Mobile App for calibrating iOS devices, and the ColorChecker Calibration for Cameras, a standard 24-patch target.

The i1Studio offers dedicated profiling for the aforementioned devices, as well as Black & White prints. Tamron unveils lightweight 100-400mm F4.5-6.3 ultra-telephoto zoom for $800

Tamron just revealed its newest ultra-telephoto zoom. Meet the Tamron 100-400mm F4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035) for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLRs—a lens that combines compact, lightweight construction with ‘superior’ image quality and ‘fast and precise AF’, according to Tamron. The lens’ tagline: heavyweight performance in a lightweight lens.

The new lens was revealed this morning, and its claim to fame is its size and weight. At just 39.3 oz., the new 100-400mm lens is the lightest in its class thanks to the use of magnesium allow in ‘key areas’ of the lens barrel. Inside that barrel you’ll find 17 lens elements in 11 groups—including three low dispersion (LD) elements—and Tamron’s high-speed Dual MPU that allows for ‘fast and precise AF’ as well as four stops of stabilization.

Tamron announces the launch of a new ultra-telephoto zoom lens with fast and precise AF, superior image quality and a lightweight, compact design

October 26, 2017, Commack, New York— Tamron USA, Inc. , announces the launch of a new ultra-telephoto zoom lens, 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035), for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. The Model A035 delivers fast and precise AF performance and consistently powerful VC (Vibration Compensation) 4 stops*1 benefits thanks to the high-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system that is found in the latest Tamron lens models. The advanced optical design of Model A035 includes three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements for aberration reduction and Tamron’s original eBAND Coating for superior anti-reflection performance. At 1,115g (39.3 oz), the new lens is the lightest in its class*2 and features magnesium alloy in key areas of the lens barrel to ensure weight reduction, and improve strength and portability. PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

1. High-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system delivers quick and highly responsive autofocus performance plus outstanding VC image stabilization

The Dual MPU system includes an MPU dedicated to vibration compensation processing, enhancing the computational capacity of the entire system. An MPU with built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) provides high-speed digital signal processing and achieves outstanding autofocus performance and vibration compensation, both indispensable for ultra-telephoto photography.

2. Superb image quality in an ultra-telephoto zoom lens

The Model A035 includes three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements for optimal optical design and aberration correction. Lighter weight, increased light transmission and crisp images with excellent contrast are achieved by reducing the number of lens elements while ensuring an appropriate balance with aberration correction. The A035 has minimum object distance (MOD) of 1.5 m (59 in) and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.6 for close-up work.

3. Exclusive eBAND Coating reduces flare and ghosting

The new A035 features Tamron’s eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating, which has an extremely low refractive index and fine multiple-layer coating technology, to achieve outstanding antireflection performance. BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating, with excellent antireflection characteristics, increases light transmission. These coating technologies greatly reduce the ghosting and flare that can occur when subjects are backlit.

4. Lightest weight, 1,115 g (39.3 oz) lens in the ultra-telephoto zoom lens class*, and only 196.5 mm (7.7 in) long

Magnesium alloy is used in key areas of the lens barrel to improve weight reduction, strength and portability. Total length of 196.5 mm (Nikon mount) means a compact size for an ultra-telephoto zoom lens covering up to 400 mm, and the A035 can therefore be easily carried in a standard camera bag. Combined with excellent vibration compensation functions, the compact size enables successful handheld ultra-telephoto photography.

*Length is the distance from the front tip of the lens to the lens mount face.

5. Optional accessory tripod mount is Arca-Swiss compatible

An Arca-Swiss style tripod mount is available as an optional accessory. Designed exclusively for Model A035, it provides quick and secure attachment to a tripod and greater stability. An easy-to-hold grip shape includes an expanded mounting plane, and the use of magnesium helps achieve lighter weight, thereby further facilitating handheld photography.

6. Compatible with tele converters and TAP-in Console

Model A035 is compatible with tele converters designed exclusively for Tamron lenses to achieve 1.4X and 2X the original focal length*. It’s also compatible with Tamron’s TAP-in Console (Model TAP-01), an optional accessory enabling users to update lens firmware and customize the lens settings, including adjustments of focusing positions for autofocusing and the operation modes for the lens’s Vibration Compensation system.

*Use of the 1.4× tele converter results in light reduction of 1 F stop; use of the 2× tele converter results in the loss of 2 F stops

7. Moisture-Resistant construction and fluorine coating for enhanced weather protection

The surface of the front element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The front surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance. Also, with active use of the A035 for outdoor photography likely, sealant is used in each of the movable and joining areas of the lens barrel to resist the intrusion of moisture.

8. Electromagnetic diaphragm system now used also for Nikon-mount lenses

An electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses*. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a built-in motor through electronic pulse signals.

9. External design places importance on functionality and ease of use

While inheriting the design that makes use of many organic curves and the delicately polished form down to fine details that characterize the SP lens series, the new Model A035 comes with a highly sophisticated design that also places a lot of importance on the lens’s functionality and ease of use, featuring an overall form that faithfully encompasses the internal structures within, a slim Luminous Gold brand ring and the switch shape design.

FLM unveils Berlin 38.4 carbon tripod on Indiegogo

The US and Canada arm of tripod manufacturer FLM is planning to introduce a new carbon fibre tripod with a maximum load capacity of 40kg/88.18lbs, but that that weighs only 2.25kg/4.96lbs itself. The forthcoming Berlin 38.4 has four-section legs made from 10-layer carbon fibre and an apex that accepts a flat screw plate or two sizes of leveling bowl.

FLM has launched the Berlin 38.4 on Indiegogo in the second of its crowdfunded projects—the company has already successfully launched the CP26-Travel tripod this same way. It hopes to raise $ 9,500 to get production underway, and says it has already completed prototyping for the legs.

It is unusual for a tripod apex to be able to handle more than one size of leveling bowl, but FLM says the Berlin 38.4 can be used with both 75mm and 100mm bowls via adapters. Leveling bowls are ideal for video users, while most stills shooters will want the flat base plate so a normal tripod head can be attached.

With no centre column, the Berlin 38.4 stands at a maximum height of 143mm/56.29in, but can support the camera from 8cm/3.14in off the ground via the three-position legs. It folds to 52cm/20.47in and the widest leg has a diameter of 38mm.

FLM expects the Berlin 38.4 to retail for $ 809, but is offering it to crowdfunding backers for packages starting as cheap as $ 558. For more information, visit the Berlin 38.4 Indiegogo campaign page.

Microsoft unveils updated Surface Book 2

Microsoft has announced the next generation of its Surface Book hybrid device, the Surface Book 2. Like its predecessor the Surface Book 2 is targeted at creative types and gamers. Microsoft says it offers “the power of a desktop, the versatility of a tablet, and the freedom of a light and thin laptop in one beautifully designed device.”

The new models come with Intel’s 8th generation Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 and 1060 GPUs. According to Microsoft that makes the Surface Book up to five times more powerful than the original model and twice as powerful as the latest MacBook Pro.

Despite powerful processing components the hybrid device offers all-day battery life, with up to 17 hours of video playback. The detachable 15″ PixelSense multi-touch display comes with a 3240 x 2160 resolution, the smaller 13″ variant still offers a very dense 3000 x 2000 pixel count but is lighter than its larger cousin (3.38lbs vs 4.2lbs).

In addition the new Surface Book 2 comes with a full array of ports, including USB-A, USB-C, and a SD card reader, reducing the need for dongles or other connection accessories. Samyang unveils 35mm F1.4 autofocus lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless

Samyang has officially unveiled its fourth autofocus lens for Sony FE mount cameras: the long-rumored Samyang AF 35mm F1.4 FE. The new 35mm joins Samyang’s three other AF lenses—the AF 14mm f/2.8 FE, AF 35mm f/2.8 FE and AF 50mm f/1.4 FE—and offers Sony full-frame mirrorless shooters yet another affordable (and fast) prime to shoot with.

As with all previous Samyang autofocus FE lenses, the company claims that they offer exceptional image quality across the whole image field.

This particular lens features 11 lens elements in 9 groups, including 2 aspherical lenses and 2 high-refractive lenses. At its core is a 9 (circular) blade aperture that opens up all the way to F1.4, and a Linear Super Sonic Motor promises “fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance.”

Manfrotto unveils Element Carbon entry-level carbon fibre tripod range

Popular tripod and accessory maker Manfrotto has just revealed a new range of entry-level carbon fibre tripods that it hopes will attract photographers looking for good quality gear at a slightly more affordable price. The two new Element Carbon tripods are aimed at travel photographers and come in two sizes with payload recommendations of 4kg/8.82lb and 8kg/17.64lb.

The three-position carbon fibre legs feature twist locks, and the larger of the two has a detachable leg that can be fitted to the centre column to form a full-sized monopod. The ball-and-socket heads that come with the legs are made from aluminum and use an Arca-style quick release plate.

The maximum height of the Manfrotto Element Carbon tripods is 143cm/56.3in for the small version and 164cm/64.57in for the large one, and they weigh 1050g/2.3lb and 1400g/3.08lb, respectively. RED unveils Monstro 8K VV full-frame sensor with 17+ stops of dynamic range

RED has just announced its new Monstro 8K VV full-frame sensor for Weapon cameras. The device features a 35.4MP 40.96mm x 21.60mm sensor and is able to record at a full 8K/60fps resolution. RED explains that the Monstro 8K VV replaces its existing DRAGON 8K VV sensor, and that anyone who has ordered the DRAGON 8K VV will be offered the Monstro as of October 5th.

The Monstro 8K VV sensor has full support for RED’s IPP2 image processing pipeline, as well as an “unprecedented dynamic range [of 17+ stops] and breathtaking color accuracy,” according to RED President Jarred Land. When coupled with the Weapon 8K VV, the device can simultaneously record Redcode RAW and either Avid DNxHD/HR or Apple ProRes, likewise offering data speeds up to 300MB/s. Today RED announced a new cinematic Full Frame sensor for WEAPON cameras, MONSTRO™ 8K VV. MONSTRO is an evolutionary step beyond the RED DRAGON 8K VV sensor with improvements in image quality, including dynamic range and shadow detail.

This new camera and sensor combination, WEAPON 8K VV, offers Full Frame lens coverage, captures 8K full format motion at up to 60 fps, produces ultra-detailed 35.4 megapixel stills, and delivers incredibly fast data speeds of up to 300 MB/s. RED has also announced a comprehensive service offering for WEAPON carbon fiber camera owners called REDARMOR-W. RED ARMOR-W offers enhanced and extended protection beyond basic RED ARMOR, and also includes one sensor swap each year.

“‘Good’ has never been ‘good enough’ for RED,” says Land. “We put ourselves in the shoes of our customers and see how we can improve how we can support them. RED ARMOR-W builds upon the foundation of our original extended warranty program and includes giving customers the ability to move between sensors based upon their shooting needs.”

Additionally, RED’s enhanced image processing pipeline (IPP2) is now available in-camera for all cameras with HELIUM and MONSTRO sensors through today’s v7.0 release firmware update.
