$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2299524587″,”galleryId”:”2299524587″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Sony has just unveiled a new, groundbreaking (at least for them) cinema camera. It’s called the Sony Venice, and it’s the company’s first 36x24mm full-frame digital motion picture camera system.

Designed in “close collaboration with the creative community,” the Venice is the newest generation of Sony’s CineAlta series, which promises natural skin tones, “elegant” highlight handling and wide dynamic range. In the case of the Venice, the camera’s 36x24mm sensor promises 15 stops of latitude to tackle challenging lighting scenarios, and a brand new color management system with ultra wide color gamut for more flexibility in post.

The headline feature is the sensor itself, though. The full-frame chip can be switched out by the camera’s user by simply removing four screws, and at 36x24mm it’s compatible with Anamorphic, Super 35mm, Spherical and Full Frame PL mount lenses. If you’re really feeling frisky, the lens mount can be modified to support E-mount lenses.

Additional features include a built-in 8-stage glass ND filter system, weather sealing, 10-bit XAVC, 16-bit RAW and S-OCN recording via the Sony AXS-R7 recorder, and a modular design that allows you to use the Venice with current and upcoming CineAlta accessories.

The camera is expected to arrive officially in February of 2018, and while Sony didn’t reveal a price, it seems filmmakers will have the option to ‘license’ different builds for specific production requirements like 4K anamorphic and Full Frame. Sony Unveils VENICE, Its First 36x24mm Full-Frame Digital Motion Picture Camera System

Anamorphic Capabilities, Interchangeable Sensor, 8-stage ND Filter System, New Color Management & Established Workflow Combine into Unique Creative Filmmaking Tool

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 6, 2017 — Sony Electronics is unveiling VENICE – its first Full-Frame digital motion picture camera system. VENICE is the next generation of Sony’s CineAlta camera systems, designed to expand the filmmaker’s creative freedom through immersive, large-format, Full Frame capture of filmic imagery producing natural skin tones, elegant highlight handling and wide dynamic range. VENICE was designed through close collaboration with the creative community, fulfilling the requirements from filmmakers and production professionals.

VENICE will be officially unveiled on Sept. 6, in front of a select audience of American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) members and a range of other industry professionals. Sony will also screen a short film, “The Dig”, the first footage shot with VENICE, produced in Anamorphic, written and directed by Joseph Kosinski and shot by Academy Award winning Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC.

“We really went back to the drawing board for this one,” said Peter Crithary, marketing manager, Sony Electronics. “It is our next-generation camera system, a ground-up development initiative encompassing a completely new image sensor. We carefully considered key aspects such as form factor, ergonomics, build quality, ease of use, a refined picture and painterly look—with a simple, established workflow. We worked in close collaboration with film industry professionals. We also considered the longer-term strategy by designing a user interchangeable sensor that is as quick and simple to swap as removing four screws, and can accommodate different shooting scenarios as the need arises.”

Full frame sensor and wide range of lens compatibility

VENICE combines a newly developed 36x24mm Full Frame sensor to meet the high-quality demands of feature filmmaking. Full Frame offers the advantages of compatibility with a wide range of lenses, including Anamorphic, Super 35mm, Spherical and Full Frame PL mount lenses for a greater range of expressive freedom with shallow depth of field. The lens mount can also be changed to support E-mount lenses for shooting situations that require smaller, lighter, and wider lenses. User-selectable areas of the image sensor allow shooting in Super 35 mm 4 – perf. Future firmware upgrades are planned to allow the camera to handle 36mm wide 6K resolution. Fast image scan technology minimizes “Jello” effects.

New color management system and established workflow for flexible post-production

A new color management system with an ultra wide color gamut gives users more control and greater flexibility to work with images during grading and post-production. VENICE also has more than 15 stops of latitude to handle challenging lighting situations from low-light to harsh sunlight with a gentle roll-off handling of highlights.

VENICE achieves high quality and efficient file-based production through Sony’s established 16-bit RAW/X-OCN via the AXS-R7 recorder, and 10 bit XAVC workflows. VENICE is also compatible with current and upcoming hardware accessories for CineAlta cameras (DVF-EL200 Full HD OLED Viewfinder, AXS-R7 recorder, AXS-CR1 and high-speed Thunderbolt-enabled AXS-AR1 card reader, using established AXS and SxS memory card formats.

Intuitive design & refined functionality support simple and efficient on-location operation

VENICE has a fully modular and intuitive design with refined functionality to support simple and efficient on-location operation. It is the film industry’s first camera with a built-in 8-stage glass ND filter system, making the shooting process efficient and streamlining camera setup. The camera is designed for easy operation with an intuitive control panel placed on the Assistant and Operator sides of the camera. A 24 V power supply input/output and LEMO connector allow use of many standard camera accessories, designed for use in harsh environments.

License options for individual production requirements

With VENICE, Sony is giving users the option to customize their camera by enabling the features needed, matched to their individual production requirements. Optional licenses will be available in permanent, monthly and weekly durations to expand the camera’s capabilities with new features including 4K anamorphic and Full Frame, each sold separately.

The VENICE CineAlta digital motion picture camera system is scheduled to be available in February 2018. For more information, please visit: www.sony.com/venice.

Broncolor unveils the Litepipe P: A versatile wand-style light shaper

06 Sep

Swiss flash manufacturer Broncolor has introduced a new wand-style light shaper called the Litepipe P: a “powerful, versatile and dismountable” flash accessory that can be used to create an ambient light effect, or as a long thin softbox when fitted with the included reflectors.

The light-shaper is basically just a roll-up sheet of diffuser that fits over a flash head using a Broncolor bayonet mount bracket. The flash tube fills the ‘pipe’ with light which, is then diffused in all directions perpendicular to the source.

“Due to the long construction of the Litepipe P, the use of a boom stand or a ceiling mounting is not necessary. Also, in defined spaces or with deep ceilings, the Litepipe P is more practical than bulky softboxes,” explains Broncolor. “Disassembled, the Litepipe P packs down to half its size, which makes it possible to pack it into a practical transport bag.”

The LitePipe comes with a pair of reflectors that wrap around the pipe and attach with Velcro to control the direction and intensity of the light, leaving a wide or narrow slit for the light to emerge from. When assembled, the pipe is 49.2in long and 6.7in in diameter, but it packs away into a 23.7×8.7×8.3in bag for transport.

The Broncolor Litepipe P costs 992 Swiss Fr/£784 (approx. $ 1,000). For more information visit the Broncolor website.

Press Release

Introducing the new Litepipe P…

With Litepipe P, broncolor launches a real innovation in the market of professional lighting systems.

Powerful, versatile and dismountable – this makes the Litepipe P the ideal companion for any photographer in the studio and on location.

Consisting of only five components, this revolutionary, lightweight light shaper is mounted and ready for use in just 60 seconds.

As normal for broncolor, Litepipe P stands out for its robustness and high quality, essential for reliable use over a period of many years.

Equipped with the approved broncolor bayonet, Litepipe P is compatible with the following broncolor lamps: Pulso G, Unilite, Litos and MobiLED (if a mat protecting glass is available we recommend its use as an optimized illumination can be achieved). In addition, Litepipe P can also be used with the broncolor Siros monolight. It produces a homogeneous light which is adaptable to the respective circumstances.

Due to its concept, Litepipe P can combine the mode of operation of various light shapers in one design; thus, there are nearly no limits for your photographic creativity. This sneaky light shaper can operate without a counter-reflector (textile cover with alu reflex coating) as a natural ambient light. The counter-reflectors mounted with the integrated Velcro® fasteners, the visible light section may be changed seamlessly. A wide (27 cm / 10.6 in.) and a small (19 cm / 7.5 in.) counter-reflector are included in the scope of delivery. This allows the setting of precise light edges.

Due to the long construction of the Litepipe P, the use of a boom stand or a ceiling mounting is not necessary. Also, in defined spaces or with deep ceilings, the Litepipe P is more practical than bulky softboxes.

Disassembled, the Litepipe P packs down to half its size, which makes it possible to pack it into a practical transport bag. The latest light shaper in the broncolor range weighs only 1.7 kg (3.8 lbs) or 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) with the transport bag.

Whether interior, fashion, beauty or product photography – the broncolor Litepipe P will display its strengths in all these fields.

The Litepipe P is available to order as item number 32.452.00 and has an MRSP of £784 ex. VAT.

Included in the kit:

  • 1x special, colour neutral diffuser foil with zip
  • 2x counter-reflector with alu reflex coating inside
  • 1x base tube with reflector, broncolor bayonet and push buttons
  • 1x counter piece with push buttons
  • 1x transport bag

Rotolight unveils the Neo 2: A portable LED HSS flash that doubles as a modeling light

06 Sep

Rotolight has announced the launch of Neo 2, an “industry first” high speed sync-capable LED flash that doubles as a continuous light source and boasts no recycle time.

The company says it designed the Neo 2 specifically for videographers and portrait photographers, and that it collaborated with Elinchrom to build its Skyport 2.4GHz HSS wireless flash receiver into the model. That Skyport receiver, in conjunction with the Rotolight HSS transmitter, enables photographers to wirelessly control up to four groups of 10 lights at ranges up to 656ft / 200m.

The Neo 2 light itself is powered by AA batteries and is capable of 85,000 full-power flashes on a single charge. This model’s shutter sync can be set at fast as 1/8000th of a second, and it offers 500% flash output.

Compared to the original model, the Neo 2 is 85% brighter when used as a continuous light, and there’s a built-in kelvin display for adjusting both flash and continuous light color temperature. Rotolight used its AccuColour LED tech with the Neo 2, the result being “perfect color rendering,” according to the company.

The Neo 2 is available now in a £250 (~$ 325 USD) bundle that includes a single light, the power supply, an accessory shoe, belt pouch, and a 4-piece filter pack. Rotolight is also offering a £1,125.00 (~$ 1,465 USD) bundle that features three lights, stands, balls heads, and a hard flight case.

Press Release

ROTOLIGHT UNVEILS NEO 2

A revolutionary all-in-one High Speed Sync flash and continuous light for photographers and filmmakers

The dawn of a new age of on-camera lighting

Pinewood Studios, London, 4th September 2017: Rotolight, award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has announced the launch of an industry-first, all in one High Speed Sync (HSS) Flash and continuous on-camera LED lighting innovation, NEO 2. Unlike traditional on-camera flash, NEO 2 has no recycle time, which ensures users never miss a shot, making it the perfect light choice for today’s modern high-frame-rate-capable cameras.

NEO 2 can be simultaneously a continuous ‘modelling light’ and HSS flash, allowing the photographer to easily acquire focus in dimly lit situations and optimise composition. Designed for portrait photographers and videographers on the go, NEO 2 provides the ‘shoot what you see’ benefits of continuous light, and the flexibility of HSS flash (1/8000th sec.) with 500% flash output, whenever users need more power or to freeze action. HSS also enables users to shoot with wider apertures to create beautiful separation between subject and backgrounds.

Rotolight has collaborated with Elinchrom to integrate its ‘Skyport’ 2.4Ghz HSS wireless flash receiver into NEO 2, eliminating the need to purchase a standalone flash receiver, whilst providing rock-solid reliability, range, flexibility and control for multiple off camera lighting setups. Skyport enables users to wirelessly control up to 10 lights, in four groups at up to 200m(656ft) with the new Rotolight HSS transmitter, optimised for Rotolight by Elinchrom. It is available on launch for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, and, shortly, Fuji camera systems, and compatible with all other Elinchrom Skyport devices.

“The NEO 2 is going to revolutionise how people use light, and eliminate the need for external flash. If you have those moments that you just cannot afford to miss, this is an incredible light for you. You’ll never miss a shot,” says Jason Lanier, a Sony Artisan of Imagery and professional photographer.

“I tested NEO 2 on a Sony A6500 at 11 frames per second,” explains Lanier. “It fired every single time. There’s genuinely no recycle time, no light loss, no power loss. That is just a game-changer, there is no other light in the world that can do that.”

Featuring electronically adjustable colour temperature in both flash and continuous modes, with a built in kelvin display, NEO 2 enables photographers to easily adjust white balance or match ambient light settings to create more natural looking shots.

Lightweight and portable, NEO 2 can be mounted both on or off camera for ultimate creative control. Delivering the longest battery life of any speedlight or flash, ever made, NEO 2 provides 85,000 full power flashes on a single set of rechargeable AA batteries, compared to the 200 flashes of a typical speedlight. Now 85% brighter in continuous mode than its predecessor, NEO 2 is a small light that delivers big results.

“It enables photographers to spend more time composing the perfect shot, rather than spending time on cumbersome lighting setups. For those shooting both stills and video, it entirely eliminates the need for two separate purchases, says Rod Aaron Gammons, managing director of Rotolight.

Packed with innovative features for video users, NEO 2 is ideal for interviews and filmmaking. It includes an updated suite of CineSFX™ effects, Rotolight’s award-winning feature set for video productions/ filmmaking, (fire, lightning, TV, gunshot, paparazzi and others), as well as Designer Fade mode for custom in-camera fade FX.

NEO 2 also features Rotolight’s AccuColour ™ LED technology that delivers outstanding colour rendering for perfect skin tones. The unique circular shape provides a naturally soft, flattering light output, with Rotolight’s signature catchlight effect.

Rotolight NEO 2 is available as a single light, including a belt pouch, accessory shoe, power supply and four-piece filter pack including diffusion, skin tone and magenta, or as a three-light kit with hard flight case, stands and ball heads. Optional accessories include softboxes, raincovers, and 10-piece colour filter pack.

SanDisk unveils world’s largest microSDXC card with 400GB capacity

03 Sep

As long as your device features a microSD-slot, there are now no excuses for running out of storage. Today, Western Digital introduced what is currently the largest capacity microSD memory card in the world: the SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card with a whopping 400GB of storage space.

Western Digital unveils My Cloud Home wireless drives with up to 16TB of storage

31 Aug

Western Digital has taken the wraps off a set of new wireless backup drives called My Cloud Home at IFA 2017. Building upon its previous My Cloud wireless drive, the new Home product combines an updated design with a better app experience that promises to make it easy to manage content from anywhere with an Internet connection.

WD is also offering a My Cloud Home Duo option that automatically duplicates content onto a secondary backup drive.

As the product’s name suggests, the Western Digital My Cloud Home is designed to function similar to traditional cloud backup services, though the consumer owns and controls the physical drive onto which their data is stored. Data can be synced to the My Cloud Home drive from a variety of sources—including phones, USB drives, and social media accounts—and the companion mobile app lets you remotely access and share the stuff you’ve stored.

From an aesthetic perspective, the updated wireless drives shed the previous models’ rounded, somewhat clinical look and replace it with an angular, more artistically inclined design that’s more “art deco” than “ar[n’]t you going to hide this somewhere?” With the aforementioned Home Duo option, a pair of drives are configured in Mirror Mode RAID 1 for duplication, ensuring there is a copy of the data should one of the drives fail.

The My Cloud Home is available now in capacities ranging from 2TB to 8TB, and the My Cloud Home Duo in capacities from 4TB to 16TB. Prices are listed below.

My Cloud Home

  • 2TB: $ 160
  • 3TB: $ 180
  • 4TB: $ 200
  • 6TB: $ 260
  • 8TB: $ 320

My Cloud Home Duo

  • 4TB: $ 310
  • 8TB: $ 400
  • 12TB: $ 550
  • 16TB: $ 700

Lomography unveils foldable Lomo’Instant Square instant film camera

29 Aug

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_8825972858″,”galleryId”:”8825972858″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Lomography just launched their latest creation on Kickstarter: The Lomo’Instant Square instant film camera. Following hot on the heels of Fujifilm’s Instax Square SQ10, the Lomo’Instant Square uses the same film as the Fuji camera, but puts it in a foldable, fully-analog body. We have a feeling lovers of Lomography’s retro style and shoot-for-the-joy-of-it culture will flock to the Lomo’Instant.

The Lomo’Instant Square’s tagline is that it’s the “world’s first fully analogue camera to work with Fujifilm Instax Square Film.”

Featuring a 95mm (45mm equivalent) F10 glass lens for sharper photos than the plastic lenses in some of Lomography’s toy cameras, the Lomo’Instant Square can be used in “advanced automatic mode” for hassle-free perfect exposures, or more creatively through features like unlimited multiple exposures or the 30-second ‘bulb’ mode.

Here’s a psychedelic intro video to get you acquainted with the new instant camera:

And here are some sample photos captured on the Lomo’Instant Square:

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_7690816603″,”galleryId”:”7690816603″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

The Lomo’Instant Square has only been up on Kickstarter for a few hours, but already it’s blown past its $ 100,000 funding goal and the number just keeps getting bigger with every reload. In other words: this camera will definitely get made, but there is still a good reason to order yours today if you’re interested.

Lomo is offering a special 35%-off-retail discount for everyone who orders the Lomo’Instant Square during the first 24 hours of the Kickstarter campaign. That means you can get the White or Black versions for $ 130 instead of the $ 200 it will cost you when it hits shelves early next year.

Canon unveils stabilized EF 85mm F1.4L lens

29 Aug

Canon has announced the EF 85mm F1.4L IS USM stabilized portrait prime. It’s the company’s first F1.4 offering at that focal length, joining its current EF 85mm F1.8 USM and EF 85mm F1.2L II USM lenses. The EF 85mm F1.4L provides up to four stops of stabilization, uses a nine-blade aperture and offers a dust and weather-resistant build.

In terms of the competition, the new EF 85mm F1.4L doesn’t aim to beat the $ 1200 Sigma 85mm F1.4 Art on price: it will debut at $ 1600. At 950g / 33.5oz it does weigh significantly less than the Sigma, even with stabilization, but that may say more about the quite heavy 1130g / 39.9oz Art lens than it does about the Canon.

The Canon EF 85mm F1.4L IS USM is expected to ship in November.

Press release

CANON U.S.A. EXPANDS ITS LENS PORTFOLIO WITH THE NEW EF 85MM F/1.4L IS USM LENS AND THEIR FIRST-EVER MACRO TILT-SHIFT LENSES

New Canon EF Lenses Support a Variety of Photography Applications including Architecture, Portrait, Food and Landscape

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 29, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens as an addition to the Company’s existing 85mm focal-range lens line-up and three new Tilt-Shift macro lenses: the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens. Canon also announced a new Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT flash. These new products will help provide both advanced amateur and professional photographers the unique photography tools for a variety of applications and solutions including architecture, landscape, food, product and portrait photography.

“Creating a powerful, timeless image requires more than just a camera. It requires high-quality, well-crafted optics and flashes to capture compelling photography,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., “These new lenses along and the Macro Twin-Lite flash will continue to push the boundaries and expand the possibilities of what advanced amateur and professional photographers capture and share with the world.”

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 85mm focal-length lenses are traditionally very sought-after options for portrait photographers. With that in mind, Canon is expanding its EF 85mm line up with the introduction of the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM; the first Canon EF 85mm lens to feature image stabilization, providing up to four stops* of shake correction for smooth and crisp imagery.

The EF 85mm utilizes one large diameter, high-precision molded glass aspherical lens and features an ASC coating. The large f/1.4 aperture produces shallow depth-of-field, fast shutter speeds and a bright image inside the viewfinder, allowing photographers to focus and compose their image reliably. In addition, a circular aperture with 9-blade iris allows for beautiful bokeh.

The New Canon EF 85mm f/1.4 L IS USM is scheduled to be available November 2017 for an estimated retail price of $ 1599.00††.

New Tilt-Shift Lenses
Tilt-Shift lenses have several applications for suitable photographers because of their ability to provide enhanced creative control over perspective through the tilt function and depth-of-field through the shift function in their images. This ability can be optimal when photographing landscapes, portraits, and architecture.

The image quality derived from Canon Tilt-Shift lenses has evolved considerably since their first inception several years ago. Enhanced optical elements like molded aspherical glass and UD lenses are at the core of the new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens. These features provide users with edge-to-edge resolution, improved image quality over previous Canon TS-E lenses and minimum distortion. Canon also included two anti-reflective coatings, SubWaveLength Structure Coating (SWC) in the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lenses and Air-Sphere Coating (ASC), into the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L and TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lenses. SWC helps to reduce flare and ghosting, while ASC is a new technology that provides amazingly high, anti-reflective performance, particularly when alleviating incidental light that can enter a lens.

The new Canon Tilt-Shift lenses also offer improved operability over previous models, including larger tilt, shift-and-lock knobs, lock-release button and a new tilt-locking mechanism that firmly locks the lens in the zero-tilt position to help prevent unintended tilting to increase more precise shooting capabilities. The rotation of the tilt-shift lenses also allows users to freely change the axis of tilt movement and shift from right angles to parallel to better adapt to various shooting conditions and situations.

The new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lenses are scheduled to be available November 2017 for an estimated retail price of $ 2199.00††.

Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash
To further enhance a photographer’s ability to shoot macro photography, the new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash can be the ideal tool. The use of a macro twin-lite allows for a more ideal lighting situation for photographers, and can be adjusted and shifted depending on the direction the photographer would like to control. Detachable macro twin lites can be rotated up to 60 degrees, and features a maximum guide number of 85.3 ft (26 m)**.

The new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash inherits the ease of use and operability of Canon’s latest Speedlite EX series flashes and increased brightness of the focusing lamp compared to previous Canon Macro-Twin Lites. There is also less noise produced from the charging of the lights.

The new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash is scheduled to be available November 2017, for an estimated retail price of $ 989.99††.
