30 Oct

The Sony RX100-series has always been about offering photographers better image quality than a phone without weighing them down or putting a kink in their necks – and the Mark V is no exception. Ours has been a constant companion, allowing us to take advantage of the last remaining flashes of autumnal Seattle sunshine. So in the course of putting the finishing touches on our full review, we’ve brought one more big update to our existing samples gallery – enjoy!

Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM galleries: Roller derby and daylight base ISO samples

14 Oct

Our friend James McDaniel recently put Sony’s premium stabilized telezoom to the test, first in low light shooting roller derby WFTDA Playoff action and later in daylight, shooting at base ISO. This lens features built-in image stabilization and uses a linear motor to acquire focus quickly and silently, which could be real benefits to all kinds of photographers. We’ll be adding to the base ISO gallery as soon as we catch a break from the rainy Seattle weather. Until then, enjoy the two galleries below:

Sony RX100 Mark V real-world samples

07 Oct

The RX100 Mark V is pretty crazy – at its full burst speed of twenty four frames per second, shooting full JPEG and Raw, I actually tended to dial it back to its ‘medium’ 10 fps burst-shooting speed. Think about that: you can literally make movies out of these 24 fps (importantly: long) bursts. With 315 on-sensor phase-detection autofocus points, I almost felt bad for doing so – but our 128GB cards were filling up fast. And though the buffer is huge, allowing you to keep shooting even as it’s clearing, it does have to clear completely (a slow process) before you can switch from photo to video mode. And given the variety of activities at Sony’s shooting experience, we wanted to shoot both.

Rishi and I have enjoyed a hands-on shooting experience with the RX100 V, and have a variety of straight-out-of-camera samples for you to peruse (no Raw support yet). We’re looking forward to uploading some more samples in the near future. This camera may well be the only serious photographic tool one would ever need. To get an idea of if the Mark V is right for you, take a look through our preliminary gallery.

Note: This is a preliminary gallery that we will be adding to. Keep in mind this was an indoor action shooting scenario, meaning all images in this gallery are taken at very high ISO, with default parameters, including default sharpening and noise reduction, and auto white balance. Given the high ISOs, detail retention is impressive, with apparently increased default noise reduction well balanced by smart sharpening. All images are straight-out-of-camera JPEGs with accompanying Raw files.

Pleasantly punchy: Nikon D3400 real-world samples gallery

30 Sep

The Nikon D3400 is the company’s newest entry-level DSLR, offering users 24MP and an 11-point AF system in a compact, lightweight body. It may not be the most exciting camera for Nikon faithful on paper, but in the real-world, it offers impressive image quality that will put any smartphone camera to shame. We used the camera mostly in the ‘Auto’ or ‘No Flash Auto’ modes, and were pleasantly surprised by its default output – metering is usually spot-on, with good sharpening and punchy color (though it may be over-the-top for some).

Over the past week, we’ve had a chance to photograph city living, botanical still-life, playful pups and yes, even some sleepy cats. Take a look at how the D3400, its 18-55mm kit lens and the DX 35mm F1.8G lens fared in our real-world samples gallery.

Traveling light: M.Zuiko 12?100mm F4 Real-world Samples

The new M.Zuiko Digital Ed 12?100mm F4 IS PRO is a 24-200mm equivalent zoom for the Micro Four Thirds system. On paper, it’s the ideal travel lens, and we were lucky enough to bring one back from Photokina last week to try out.

So how does it stack up? That’s what we wanted to know, so we spent a jet-lagged morning back in Seattle trying it out with the OM-D E-M1. And we have the pictures to prove it.

Petzval 58mm real-world samples

18 Sep

Lomography’s second riff on a historic lens design, the Petzval 58 offers the same swirly bokeh effect as the original 85mm variation at a shorter focal length. It’s been given the same brass treatment as the first lens and also uses the Waterhouse aperture system with interchangeable plates, but introduces a Bokeh Control Ring to adjust the strength of the swirly bokeh effect. Funded via a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, the Petzval 58 made its way to our office. Take a look and see what the latest Petzval can do.

Canon EOS M10 real-world samples

27 Aug

The Canon EOS M10 is the most beginner-friendly camera of that manufacturer’s mirrorless family, doing away with many physical controls and embracing touchscreen functionality. Its 18MP APS-C sensor, built-in Wi-Fi and compact size help make it a compelling go-everywhere camera, especially when you add Canon’s svelte 22m F2 to the mix.

We’ve had it on hand for strolls through the neighborhood, shows in dim bars and in the stands watching some world-class tennis. Take a look at the samples we’ve gathered so far.

Fujifilm X-E2S real-world samples

02 Aug

The Fujifilm X-E2S takes everything we loved about the X-E2 and its latest firmware updates and adds… well, not much. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a capable and relevant camera in today’s market. With great build quality, plentiful external controls, retro styling and Fujifilm’s gorgeous film simulations, the X-E2S just begs you to slap on a prime lens and go out shooting. The substantial drop in MSRP compared to the original X-E2 doesn’t hurt, either. Take a look at what we came up with when we took the X-E2S for a spin.

Nikon releases first AF-S Nikkor 105mm F1.4 E ED samples

29 Jul

Nikon has released some of the first sample images from its newly announced AF-S Nikkor 105mm F1.4E ED. The samples are unfortunately somewhat low in resolution, and we always take officially sanctioned manufacturer sample images with a grain of salt, but we have to say we’re impressed with what we’re seeing. When it ships in August, the 105mm F1.4 will be one of the fastest autofocus primes of its kind on the market.

Canon EF-M 28mm F3.5 Macro real-world samples

25 Jul

‘Get closer’ is photo advice that the Canon EF-M 28mm F3.5 takes to heart. It can achieve focus as close as 9.4cm/3.7in, and brings a couple of built-in LEDs to the party to brighten things up. It’s not perfect, but it’s priced attractively and if you’re a Canon EOS M shooter then we think this little lens is a great way to experiment with macro photography. Read more of our impressions on using it and take a look at a full gallery of samples.
