iPhone 7 real-world sample gallery

07 Oct

The iPhone 7 lacks the dual camera modules of its iPhone 7 Plus sibling, but it still offers plenty of imaging features. It includes a 12MP sensor with optical image stabilization, 4K video recording and thanks to iOS 10, Raw image capture. We’ve already posted a preliminary iPhone 7 Plus gallery, but not wanting to neglect the iPhone 7, we went spent some time getting to know its sibling too.

Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art real world sample gallery

04 Oct

Hot on the heels of its Photokina announcement, the Sigma 12-24mm F4 Art arrived on our doorstep last week, meaning it was time to shoot wide. Just 1mm shy of matching the world’s widest rectilinear zoom, the Canon 11-24mm F4 L, the Sigma gives a large amount of the Canon’s focal range for a much lower price of $ 1599. To see if its images are as tempting as the specs are, we wasted no time getting it out in the real world mounted on the new Canon 5D Mark IV, the 5DSR, and a Sony a7R II with Sigma’s MC11 adaptor.

Going wide: Irix 15mm F2.4 sample gallery

02 Oct

Swiss company Irix recently released two versions of their 15mm F2.4 prime to the consumer market. The Irix 15mm is offered in two varieties: ‘Blackstone’ and the ‘Firefly.’ The Irix Blackstone features a magnesium and aluminum body able to withstand ‘extreme conditions,’ while the Irix Firefly model is, according to the company, the lightest lens in its class. Both versions of the lens are available in Canon EF-, Nikon F- and Pentax K-mount.

The lens is composed of 15 elements in 11 groups and produces a really nice sunstar and some, well, very interesting lens flare. Interestingly enough although the lens states its widest aperture is F2.4, the best we could do on the Canon 5DS R was F2.5. In any case we put the lens to the test over a few weeks of shooting and here are the results.

iPhone 7 Plus real-world sample gallery

01 Oct

With our iPhone 7 Plus review underway, we’ve started off by putting together an initial gallery of real-world samples testing its performance in various light conditions. The 7 Plus is the first Apple device equipped with dual camera modules, so we’ve taken a look at wide and telephoto performance in addition to the camera’s Portrait mode, which simulates shallow depth of field.

Nikon 105mm F1.4E ED sample images

29 Sep

The Nikon 105mm F1.4 is an ultra-fast prime lens perfect for portrait photography or as a general-use telephoto. It’s pretty heavy 34.7oz / 2.17lb, and features a relatively large, 82mm front element. But gosh darn it, there’s a lot to like about the kind of images you can get with it. We did some heavy lifting and took it out for a spin.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV real-world sample gallery

29 Aug

We’ve only had the 5D Mark IV for a couple days, but that hasn’t stopped us from taking it out for a bit of shooting. Take a look at some sample images from Canon’s latest full-frame DSLR.

*Raw conversions have been performed with a very early beta build of Adobe Camera Raw. Image quality may not represent the final shipping version.

Pentax K-70 real-world sample gallery

19 Aug

It’s a bit of a shame the K-70 didn’t arrive in the middle of winter. The weather-resistant design would have made it the perfect companion for braving the inevitable Northwest rain, and the famed in body “Shake Reduction” would have helped in overcast light conditions, as well. Nevertheless, when it arrived we took the refined 24MP DSLR out in the hot summer sun for a bit of a sample shakedown.

Lensbaby Twist 60 real-world sample gallery

06 Aug

Lensbaby’s Twist 60 is all about the bokeh. It promises appealing subject/background separation with Petzval-like swirly bokeh, offering an F2.5 maximum aperture. The Twist 60 is part of Lensbaby’s Optic Swap system and is currently offered for Canon, Nikon and Sony E mounts. We just couldn’t resist taking it out for a spin  — and we have to confess that we stuck mostly to wide open apertures in order to get the full swirly effect.  Take a look at our samples below, and stay tuned for more thoughts on swirly bokeh!

Sony Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA Sample Gallery

11 Jul

Sony has just announced its Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA lens, a high quality normal for its E-mount Alpha line of cameras. At a shooting event in San Diego, we had a chance to go hands-on. It’s a formidable lens, smaller than the 85mm GM with its 72mm filter thread, but significantly larger than the FE 55mm F1.8 ZA already available for the system.

So what does that extra heft and glass get you besides top notch build quality and ergonomics? Have a look at our gallery where we’ve posted a smattering of real-world portraits at fast apertures shot using Eye AF on the 42MP Alpha 7R II, some shallow focus shots at various apertures to get an idea of axial CA, as well as some infinity horizons at various apertures for the assessment of sharpness (day scene) and coma (night scene).

We’re duly impressed by the lens’ sharpness across the field wide open, lack of axial CA (green/purple fringing just outside the focal plane), and pleasing bokeh, but to keep things objective, we’ll be following up soon with a brief comparison of these attributes against the already stellar FE 55/1.8 ZA. Look for updates to this gallery as well in the coming days.
