Blackmagic releases firmware 1.8 for all cinema cameras

Blackmagic Design, maker of a range of high-end compact cinema cameras, has announced a firmware update for all of their models. Available today, the new firmware provides an entirely new code base for the Blackmagic cameras and will enable the company to roll out new features to their devices. The new update claims to provide improved performance and introduces a new user interface. Learn more

Ricoh releases GR firmware 4.0

A new firmware updated for the Ricoh GR adds a ‘High Speed’ AF mode and claims to improve operational performance for aperture preview. Other additions include a ‘Shift Crop’ effect mode designed to reduce perspective distortion by removing a portion of vertically-oriented images, and improved stability when connecting via USB to a Mac. LG releases G3 with QHD screen and laser-AF

LG has announced the G3, succeeding last year’s G2 as the Korean manufacturer’s flagship smartphone. The new model’s headline feature is its screen. The 5.5-inch True HD-IPS+ display comes with a 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution which, at 534 ppi, makes it one of the pixel-densest current displays. Additionally, the G3 uses a new laser-AF system that is capable of measuring the subject-to-camera distance. Read more

Sony releases update for QX10 and QX100 lens modules

Sony has released a firmware update for its QX10 and QX100 camera modules that bring a couple of improvements. The shutter button can now be used to pre-focus with a half-press which allows you to focus and recompose with the QX modules just like you would do with any digital camera. Learn more

Lensbaby releases 5.8mm F3.5 circular fisheye lens

Lensbaby, maker of popular selective focus lenses, has announced a 5.8mm F3.5 circular fisheye lens for Canon and Nikon mounts. With a 185° angle of view, the lens produces a full-circle fisheye image when used with APS-C-sized sensor cameras. The lens also allows you to focus as close as 1/4-inch. Sony Australia releases a3500 with new kit lens

Sony has announced its new Alpha 3500 (a3500) which, at this point, is only for the Australian market. The camera is identical to the a3000, with the exception of a new kit lens. This 18-50mm F4.0-5.6 lens is less impressive than the 18-55 F3.5-5.6 that came with the a3000, as it’s shorter, slower, and lacks image stabilization. The a3500 will be available soon for AU$ 499.

Apple releases cheaper 8GB version of iPhone 5c

When Apple launched their latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5s, they took the hardware of the predecessor, the iPhone 5, added iOS7 and a new colorful plastic body, and called the new creation the iPhone 5c. The 5c was meant to be a more affordable alternative to the 5s but it appears sales have thus far not met the expectations of Apple executives. Today the tech giant from Cupertino has made a move to fix this and released an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c. Learn more

Instagram releases redesigned Android app

The Facebook-owned mobile imaging platform Instagram has launched a revamped version of its Android app. There aren’t any new filters, frames or editing options though. The most obvious changes have been made to the design of the user interface. It has adopted the ‘flattened’ look of the latest Android versions and some OEM software. Learn more

Adobe releases Revel for Android

Adobe has released an Android version of its Revel app. Previously the service had only been available on mobile devices running Apple’s iOS operating system. Revel is a cloud-based image and video management service that allows you to set up group libraries that are shared between friends or family members.
