Panasonic releases trio of compact superzooms

Panasonic also announced a trio of compact superzoom cameras, covering all price ranges. The base model is the Lumix DMC-SZ10, which has a 16MP CCD, 24-228 mm equiv. lens, and flip-up 2.7″ LCD. Stepping up to the DMC-ZS45 (TZ57 outside of US) gives you a 16MP CMOS sensor, 24-480mm lens, 1080p video, Wi-Fi with NFC, and a larger/sharper LCD. The top model is the ZS50 (TZ70) that has a 12MP sensor, 24-720mm lens, 60p video, and a 1.2M dot EVF. More details

Adobe releases Camera Raw 8.7.1 with Sony a7 II support

Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.7.1 final releases are now available, adding support for the Sony Alpha 7 II and a handful of lens profiles. A bug related to chromatic aberration with the Samsung NX1 has also been addressed in this update. Read more

Nikon releases Capture NX-D 1.0.3 and View NX 2.10.2

Nikon has released updated versions of its image processing software, bumping its Capture NX-D software to version 1.0.3 and View NX software to version 2.10.2. Both updates introduce a number of bug fixes for Windows and Macintosh platforms. Learn more

Wildlife Photographer of the Year releases images from winners shortlist

11 Oct

Britain’s Natural History Museum has disclosed four of the winning images from the shortlist of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. With a judging panel chaired by Jim Brandenburg, the competition attracted almost 42000 entries from 96 countries this year, and 100 of the best images will form a touring exhibition that the museum says will visit six continents. See gallery

Where’s the red dot? Leica releases new M-P Digital rangefinder

Under the slogan ‘Perfect understatement’ Leica has quietly released a new M-series rangefinder, the M-P Digital (240). Featuring a full-frame 24MP CMOS sensor and 2GB of built-in RAM, Leica claims that the new M-P digital is ‘twice as fast’ as the standard M (Typ 240). The original Leica MP (no hypen) announced in 2003, took the film M-series back to its 1950s roots by featuring unflashy ergonomics inspired by the M3. The new model updates the same approach, omitting the iconic Leica red dot. Click through for more details.

Pelican Imaging releases light field photos from its mobile imaging array

Pelican Imaging has released a set of re-focusable pictures taken with its light field camera for smartphones. Instead of placing an array of microlenses between the sensor and the main lens, Pelican uses an array of main lenses – each with a sensor behind it. Pelican’s offering is more suitable for smartphones, and their sample images allow for re-focusing, changing DOF, and shifting perspective. Click through for more details and links to the images.

Vanguard releases new Alta CA tripod kits with pistol-grip head

Tripod and bag manufacturer Vanguard has launched a new range of tripods that are fitted with the company’s latest pistol grip style GH-30 head. The aluminium Alta CA leg-set comes in three or four-section options to achieve maximum heights of either 1565mm (61.6in) or 1550mm (61in) though both models are designed to carry a payload of up to 11lbs (5kg). Updated: Nikon releases Capture NX-D 1.0.0 software

Nikon has released version 1.0.0 of Capture NX-D, introduced in beta form earlier this year. Capture NX-D is the first version of Nikon’s flagship Raw converter since previous developer Nik Software was bought by Google in 2012. The software features a new user interface, batch conversion and a non-destructive workflow that saves adjustments in sidecar files alongside the original image. Read more

Blackmagic releases firmware 1.8 for all cinema cameras

Blackmagic Design, maker of a range of high-end compact cinema cameras, has announced a firmware update for all of their models. Available today, the new firmware provides an entirely new code base for the Blackmagic cameras and will enable the company to roll out new features to their devices. The new update claims to provide improved performance and introduces a new user interface. Learn more
