Nikon releases new firmware for D5: Improves video and adds flicker reduction

Nikon has released new firmware for its flagship D5 DSLR. There are four main improvements included in firmware v1.10, which address some of the frustrations that we had with the D5 in our full review.  

Video Recording Upgrades:

  1. Movie maximum recording time extended to 29 minute 59 seconds, including for 4K UHD video
  2. Electronic VR for more stable hand-held Full-HD*1/HD video recording added

Still Photography Upgrades:

  1. Flicker reduction function for still photography added, minimizing exposure variations
  2. 9-point dynamic-area AF added, offering more selective focus on a moving subject

Further advance of Nikon D5 digital SLR camera performance through expanded functions

Tokyo – Nikon Corporation has released new firmware, C: Ver. 1.10, that expands the functions of its flagship Nikon FX-format digital SLR camera, the D5.

The D5 has been extremely well received on all fronts, winning such globally prestigious photo and imaging awards as the TIPA Awards 2016, and the Camera GP (Grand Prix) 2016 Readers Award (sponsored by Japan’s Camera Journal Press Club), which is selected through voting by users.

Nikon has released new firmware for the D5, C: Ver. 1.10, that enhances D5 performance even further. The new firmware offers a major upgrade to the camera’s shooting capabilities, delivering four key improvements. First, the maximum recording time of movies, including for 4K UHD movies, is extended, and three functions — Flicker reduction for still images, 9-point dynamic-area AF AF-area mode, and Electronic VR for movies — are added. In addition to these four major changes, some additional updates* have been applied to the new firmware.

Four major improvements

1. Maximum movie recording time, including for 4K UHD movies, extended to 29 min. 59 s

Movies up to 29 minutes 59 seconds in length can now be recorded at all Movie quality and Frame size/frame rate settings. The new firmware increases the maximum recording time of even 4K UHD (3840×2160) movies from 3 minutes to 29 minutes 59 seconds. In addition, movies are recorded to up to eight separate files, each of which has a file size of up to 4 GB. Separate movie files can be combined to create a single movie using ViewNX-Movie Editor.

  • The maximum recording time for 4K UHD time-lapse movies is 3 minutes.

2. Flicker reduction for still images added for more stable exposure under lighting that flickers

When shooting under fluorescent and some other types of artificial lighting, flickering may cause uneven exposure in parts of images and/or variations in exposure and color reproduction characteristics between individual images captured continuously or in quick succession. We have equipped the new firmware with a Flicker reduction function for still images*1 that reduces these effects. When Flicker reduction is enabled, the camera detects peak brightness as light flickers and automatically times shutter release with these peaks in brightness for stable exposure and color reproduction characteristics. This function is effective when continuous shooting is used for indoor sporting events or similar situations captured at fast shutter speeds*2.

  • *1Still images captured during viewfinder photography (not available with mirror up mode).
  • *2The continuous shooting rate may decrease.

3. 9-point dynamic-area AF AF-area mode added for focusing on a limited portion of a moving subject

With dynamic-area AF, the camera focuses based on information from surrounding focus points* if the subject briefly leaves the focus point selected by the photographer. The D5 originally supported 25-point, 72-point and 153-point dynamic-area AF. A 9-point dynamic-area AF option has been added with the new firmware. This new option is effective for focusing on a more specific portion of a moving subject.

  • *In dynamic-area AF with 9, 25 or 72 points, the number of focus points actually used may be fewer than 9, 25 or 72, depending on the selected primary focus point.

4. Electronic vibration reduction function, effective with hand-held recording, added (for HD and full-HD*1 movie recording)

The new firmware has been equipped with an Electronic VR function that reduces the effects of camera shake with hand-held recording of movies in the FX- or DX-based movie formats (image areas)*2. The effects of camera shake in three directions — vertical (up and down), horizontal (left and right), and rotational (around the center of the lens) — are reduced. This function is effective when recording movies in places or situations in which use of a tripod is prohibited or inconvenient, or when there simply isn’t time to set one up. In addition, electronic VR can be used in combination with the optical vibration reduction (VR) built into a NIKKOR lens for more effective reduction of the effects of camera shake.

  • *1Not available with 1920 x 1080 crop settings.
  • *2The angle of view will be reduced slightly.
  • The effects of electronic VR are also reflected when photos are captured during movie recording (Live frame grab).
  • When Electronic VR is enabled, the maximum sensitivity allowed is ISO 102400, even if ISO sensitivity is set to Hi 0.3 or higher.

Leica releases audio and S-lens adapters for SL mirrorless

Leica has announced the availability of a pair of adapters for its SL full frame mirrorless camera that will allow users to fit lenses from the S medium format system and to use microphones and headphones when shooting video. The Leica S-Adapter L opens the camera to 16 lenses from the S system including the company’s collection of leaf-shutter lens. While this doesn’t add any focal lengths that aren’t available via the existing SL zooms it will allow access to wider apertures for some and will also save existing S users having to buy extra lenses.

The new audio adapter uses the camera’s USB port and provides a pair of 3.5mm jack sockets for connecting a microphone and audio monitors for those shooting video with the SL.

The Leica S-Adapter L is available now and will be priced at £950, while the audio adapter AA-SCL4 will be on sale at the end of the month for £120. US pricing has yet to be announced.

The S-Adapter L allows the use of 16 Leica S-Lenses with focal lengths from 24 to 180mm (including six central shutter lenses), in addition to the system’s own lenses, the Vario-Elmarit–SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. and the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4. Novoflex releases Canon EF electronic adapter for Leica SL

Just bought a Leica SL but can’t afford to buy a Leica lens to put on it? Don’t worry – German manufacturer Novoflex has just the thing for you.

The new Novoflex SL-EOS adapter allows certain Canon EF lenses and teleconverters to be used on the Leica SL, with support for several functions including autofocus. 

Novoflex has launched its new SL – EOS electronic adapter which, according to the manufacturer allows ‘around 30’ Canon EF lenses to be used with the Leica SL camera. The adapter transmits focal distance and aperture EXIF data, has an AF/MF mode, and supports autofocus, aperture control, and depth of field indication. According to Novoflex, ‘around 30’ Canon EF lenses and teleconverters work with the adapter, and image stabilization is not supported.

The SL-EOS adapter is currently listed on Novoflex’s website for €499 (~$ 555)

Fujifilm releases several camera and lens firmware updates

In addition to the X-Pro2 firmware update we reported on last week, Fujifilm has released a number of firmware updates for several lenses and camera bodies: the X-Pro1, X-Pro2, X-M1, X-E1, X-A1, and X-A2, as well as the XF 50-140mm F2.8 and XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lenses. Changes and firmware versions vary based on model, but most camera body updates simply add support for a focus limiter function on the XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6.

Atomos releases new ‘Flame’ versions of Shogun and Ninja recorders

Atomos, a name synonymous with off-camera video capture, has announced the release of its Atomos Flame series of field monitors, the Shogun Flame and the Ninja Flame. The new series kicks the monitors’ performance up a couple notches with some new features while also addressing some common requests from existing users.

Most notable is support for HDR (high dynamic range) video. The new monitors include the AtomHDR image processing engine which can display 10 stops of dynamic range to match 10-bit Log footage from cameras, revealing details in shadows and highlights that would be clipped on traditional monitors. Log formats from most major camera manufacturers are supported, including Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Arri, and Red.

HDR is made possible in part by the bright 1500 nit panel, which the company tells us is about four times brighter than existing models. However, even if you’re not shooting HDR this extra brightness could be very helpful. Atomos says it’s so bright that it should allow for easy outdoor monitoring without a hood.

One improvement sure to please a lot of videographers is a hot-swappable dual battery system that lets you keep shooting uninterrupted, along with an improved battery charger which is three times faster. Additionally, both models have ‘battle-ready armor’ to keep working in the field. We’re not sure what ‘battle-ready’ really means when it comes to video gear, but some extra bumpers will definitely let videographers worry a little less about every little bump to their equipment. Both models record 4K/HD to 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes or DNxHR using standard SSDs.

The Ninja Flame is an HDMI only model with an MSRP of $ 1295. The Shogun Flame supports both SDI and HDMI, including bi-directional conversion, XLR audio inputs and outputs, LTC/Genlock connectivity and Raw to ProRes/DNxHR recording for some Sony and Canon cameras (not specified). It has an MSRP of $ 1695.

The Flame series is expected to ship the week of March 28.

Melbourne, Australia – 22nd March 2016: In the same way that the original Atomos Shogun helped fast track the transition from HD to 4K filmmaking, Atomos are intent on delivering 4K HDR to everyone with the launch of the Shogun Flame and Ninja Flame.

The Atomos Flame Series delivers the world’s most advanced 7” field monitor, accurately displaying 10 stops of the luminance detail of Log with 10 bit HDR Post Production color accuracy, for the first time in a field monitor. The AtomHDR engine not only resolves HDR brightness detail (dynamic range), with 10-bit color accuracy it also resolves 64 times more color information than traditional 8-bit panels. The Flame series of monitor-recorders are equipped with the AtomHDR engine, utilising the power of the 1500nit panel in tandem with Atomos’ patent pending image processing to resolve the brightness detail of Log camera signals with the color accuracy of 10 bit HDR images mastered in post production. This means that the usual complications of exposing Log signals on a washed out image are eliminated – with AtomHDR you simply frame, expose, focus and shoot. All major camera makers log formats are supported – Sony, Canon, Panansonic, Arri, Red and JVC.

The monitor itself is a calibrated 7” 1920×1200 325ppi IPS with upgraded 10-bit color accuracy, resolving 1.07 billion colors compared to the 16.7 million colors of traditional 8-bit panels. This all but eliminates the color branding seen on traditional panels and in tandem with AtomHDR lets you see images as you would with your own eyes.

For existing SDR, Rec709 delivery or scenes that do not have the wide brightness variation required for HDR shooting, switch to traditional video mode (Rec709) and activate a Brightness slider that lets you take advantage of the impressive “Daylight Viewable” 1500nits of brightness emanating from the Flame units. This adds huge versatility for the Flame series – if you have scenes that call for HDR, activate the AtomHDR mode. If you don’t, switch to High Bright mode for outdoor monitoring hood free.

Shogun and Ninja Flame have a rugged built in armour ensuring it is battle-ready for the field and also now inherits the Atomos patented continuous power system pioneered on our HD range.  The hot-swappable dual battery system automatically swaps to the second battery when power is low, allowing hot swapping to new fresh batteries.  This coupled with our new improved battery charger which is 3 times faster means that power is always taken care of. 

The addition of AtomHDR, the 1500nit brightness, 10-bit colour accuracy and Continuous power genuinely positions the Flame Series as the best 7” Field Monitors in the world, but as we know with Atomos they are much more than monitors alone, featuring advanced recording, playback and editing capability as well. Nissin releases i60A flash unit with a guide number of 60m

Flash manufacturer Nissin has announced a hotshoe flash unit that features a guide number of 60m and the company’s NAS 2.4GHz radio wireless control system. The Nissin i60A can control three groups of flashes in its role as a commander, or it can be controlled via another Nissin flash unit (only the Di700A at the moment) equipped with the NAS system or by the company’s Air 1 commander unit. Although each unit will have a TTL system dedicated to the mount it is designed for, the i60A also comes with multiple control systems built-in. This means that every flash can be used off-camera in an optically connected network of Canon, Nikon and Sony TTL flashes, no matter the mount. The i60A is equipped with 8 channels.

The zoom head covers focal lengths of 24-200mm, and it is at the 200mm that the quoted GN60m@100 ISO has been measured. The unit has been designed to be small so that it will be attractive to owners of compact system cameras – it measures 98x73x112mm and weighs 300g without batteries. Manual control allows 1/3-stop increments from full power to 1/256th, and auto exposure compensation is available up to +/-2EV.

The head rotates 180° and tilts directly upwards, and the unit is powered by 4AA cells, that Nissin says will provide 220 full power bursts, or via an external battery pack.

The Nissin i60A will be available for Nikon, Canon cameras in May 2016, and Micro Four Thirds, Sony and Fujifilm cameras in the future. No pricing information has been released yet. Nissin doesn’t have any English information posted yet, but there is a Japanese press release PDF on the website.

Sony releases a6300 videos showing AF tracking and 8 fps live view burst performance

Sony has released a video showing the AF tracking and 8 fps live view burst of the newly announced a6300, as well as a video demonstrating AF with subject tracking in 4K video.

The camera appears to have impressive AF subject tracking accuracy, following not just the dog but the dog’s face in the demo. We’ll reserve judgement until we get our hands on one, but previous Sony cameras had a tendency to wander off to other areas of the subject when using general subject tracking, so these results indeed appear impressive. The expansive 425-point array also mean the camera can track the subject to almost any point in the frame, and all of these points purportedly work with A-mount lenses mounted via a LA-EA3 adapter (we expect Canon mount lenses to work as well, with appropriate adapters).* Have a look below.


Sony a6300 ‘4D Focus’ demo


The a6300 also potentially addresses one of the largest shortcomings of mirrorless cameras for action shooting: the often stop-motion playback of last-shot images, as opposed to a live feed, when shooting continuous bursts. We recently reported on Nikon’s calling out of this particular weak point of mirrorless cameras, so Sony’s response in the a6300 today seems timely. Essentially, the a6300 offers a live feed in the EVF or on the LCD during 8 fps continuous shooting, in between what seem to be very short blackouts. This should make it much easier to both pan the camera and still keep your subject in the frame, or keep your selected AF point(s) over your subject. 

The video above, in addition to one Sony presented at the press event earlier today, demonstrate a promising live feed during 8 fps bursts, but ultimately its utility will be largely dependent on the length of those blackouts between shots. Sony claims that the length of blackouts is competitive when compared to a <$ 1000 DSLR.

While that might seem like a relatively low bar, the fact that Sony is getting a live feed off the sensor at all in between shots at 8 fps represents significant progress in the realm of mirrorless cameras. In comparison, a DSLR doesn’t have to do anything but return the mirror to get you this ‘live feed’ through the optical viewfinder between shots.


Autofocus in video


Sony has also released a video demonstrating impressive AF in 4K video recording with native mount lenses. There appears to be little hunting, with fast refocusing and even subject tracking available during movie recording. Have a look above.

This should be a boon for videographers, assuming Sony now allows one to easily specify the subject before tracking it. On the note of specifying a subject, it’s a huge shame that a touchscreen isn’t paired with this capable video AF system for focus point selection.

At least on paper, we think that these advances mark some significant progress for mirrorless (it’s too bad we can’t say the same for the a6300’s ergonomics), and we’ll be curious to see how the systems perform when we get our hands on a production a6300.


* It remains to be seen if subject tracking is available in any mode save for ‘Wide’ with 3rd party lenses though: subject tracking has been severely limited with 3rd party glass on the a7 II and a7R II due to the inability of the photographer to specify the subject, since it’s only available in Wide area mode.

Sony releases three premium ‘G Master’ lenses for FE-mount

Sony has created a new lineup of lenses for its full-frame cameras known as G Master (GM). These are the company’s high-end lenses that sit above its ‘G-series’ lenses and, as you might imagine, command a premium price. The first three GM lenses include FE 24-70mm F2.8, FE 85mm F1.4 and FE 70-200mm F2.8 OSS.

In addition to the lenses, Sony also released a pair of teleconverters (1.4x and 2.0x) for use with the new 70-200mm F2.8 lens.

At the press conference announcing the new lenses the company placed enormous emphasis on the importance of high resolution and high quality bokeh. Says Senior Technology Manager Mark Weir: “Being a leader in image sensor technologies, we have a unique insight into where sensor and camera technology is going, and we put this insight into our lens design.”

Sony mentioned they’re now designing G Master lenses to a 50 lines per mm standard, a step up from the 10 and 30 lines/mm MTF traces we’re used to seeing. Regarding bokeh, Sony explained that the lifelike nature of an image in either still or video is determined by the nature of the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus areas, and that an abrupt shift between the sharp region and the background can look artificial. Their research shows that this often comes down to a lack of precision in the preparation of the lens elements, and less than optimal positioning the optical cavity. Sony indicated that G Master lenses can be shaped to within 1/100th of a micron of their design spec to address this problem. 11 aperture blades on the new 85mm and 70-200mm lenses also indicate a serious commitment to smooth out-of-focus areas.

Additionally, each G Master lens employs a different drive mechanism for optimal AF performance. The 24-70mm uses a Direct Drive Supersonic motor (SSM), which we’ve previously noted to confer incredibly fast, accurate, and silent AF to the FE 35mm F1.4 lens. Sony boasts this focus motor to offer 0.01mm precision of focus group placement. The 85mm F1.4 uses a ring drive. The 70-200 sports a dual implementation: two focus groups at either end of the lens are drive by different actuators. A ring drive SSM drives the front AF group while dual linear motors drive a floating rear group. The result is fast continuous autofocus and silent AF for video, as well as in impressive minimum focus distance of <1m.

Sony also emphasized their development of advanced simulation techniques that make it possible to control things like bokeh right from the design stage. Previously, it was difficult to judge the effects of optical design without first building the lens – simulation technologies now help Sony see the effects of iterations on the optical design.

The first G Master lenses will be available in March, with the 24-70mm listing for $ 2200 and the 85mm listing for $ 1800 in the U.S. The 70-200mm will follow in May, with pricing yet to be determined.

New FE24-70mm F2.8 GM Standard Zoom Lens

Featuring some of the most advanced lens technologies in market today, the new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM (model SEL2470GM) is the ultimate choice for those seeking the highest possible optical performance for portrait, travel and event photography or even simple everyday shooting1

The new lens is built with three aspherical elements including a newly developed, extremely precise XA (extreme aspherical) element that reduces aberration and delivers the ultimate resolution throughout the entire zoom range and aperture range, as well as from corner to corner of all image files. Additionally, an ED (Extra-low-Dispersion) glass element and Super ED glass element keep chromatic aberration to a minimum while maximizing resolution and bokeh without any unnatural coloration.

New FE 85mm F1.4 GM Telephoto Prime Lens

Designed as the ultimate portrait lens, the long-awaited new FE 85mm F1.4 GM telephoto prime lens (model SEL85F14GM) strikes a perfect balance between resolution and bokeh in a compact package.

The lens features a new XA (extreme aspherical) element as well as three ED glass elements that work together to ensure that the in-focus areas are captured in extremely high resolution while the surrounding out-of-focus areas dissolve smoothly into a beautiful soft backdrop. It has a circular aperture with 11 blades – the most ever used in an ? lens – that ensures bokeh is smooth and visually appealing.  Externally, the new model has Sony’s original Nano AR Coating, which is of particular importance in a portrait lens as it reduces flare and ghosting, even with backlit subjects or similarly challenging lighting conditions.

For accurate autofocusing, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM lens includes a ring drive SSM motor system that provides ample power and speed to drive the lens’ large, heavy focus group. It’s also equipped with two position sensors to support flawless focus control of the large, heavy lens elements.   

This new professional portrait lens is dust and moisture resistant and also has an aperture ring with on/off switchable click stops that can be adjusted based on whether a user is shooting still images or movies.  It also has an AF / MF switch and a focus hold button.2

New FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS Telephoto Zoom

Covering the frequently used 70-200mm focal range, the new FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS telephoto zoom lens (model SEL70200GM) offers extremely high rendering, AF performance and image stabilization, making it a versatile choice for shooting wildlife, sports, weddings and a variety of other events and locations1.

The new flagship telephoto zoom model delivers extraordinary sharpness and clarity throughout the entirety of its zoom range thanks to its three advanced lens elements including XA, Super ED and ED glass components, as well as its Nano AR coating. 

The new FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS lens features a floating focusing system – implemented in an ? zoom lens for the first time – that contributes to an impressive minimum focusing distance of merely 0.96m and ensures AF performance is optimized during both still and video shooting. The lens includes a SSM (Super Sonic Motor) plus dual linear motors that work together to move large lens elements quickly – a task that requires a high level of drive control and ensures focus accuracy. Sony has also announced new compact 1.4x and 2x Teleconverters  – models SEL14TC and SEL20TC respectively – that offer even greater reach while maintaining the overall streamlined design and feel of the 70-200mm lens.3   

Pricing and Availability

The new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM Standard Zoom and 85mm F1.4 GM Telephoto prime lenses will be available in March for about $ 2,200 and $ 1,800, respectively.  In Canada, they will be sold for $ 2,900 CA and $ 2,400 CA, respectively. 

The new 70-200mm F2.8 GM Telephoto Zoom Lens and its compatible 1.4x and 2x Teleconverters will be available in May.  Pricing is not yet available for these models. 

The new G Master Series of interchangeable lenses will be sold at a variety of Sony authorized dealers throughout North America.

Leica releases 60 rare Pandas into China – limited edition M-P rangefinders, that is

In a move intended to honor the giant panda – a Chinese national treasure – German camera manufacturer Leica has produced a limited edition version of its M-P (Typ 240) rangefinder that is finished in black and white. The ‘Panda Edition’ will consist of a pair of kits that include the camera body along with either a Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH lens or a Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH. 

The lower parts of the bodies will be covered with the traditional black leather trim of the Leica M cameras, but the metal areas above the lens, and the base plate, will be finished in a ‘special’ white paint. The black and white color scheme is designed to remind us of the giant panda, and the white paint will symbolize calm.  

A panda logo will decorate the rear of the metal portion of the upper body, along with the engraving ‘CHENGDU CHINA’. Chengdu is an area in the Sichuan province that is considered home to the endangered giant panda, and where the majority of those still left in the wild live. The region is also home to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the world’s largest giant panda nature reserve in the Wolong Valley. 

Disappointingly the lenses will be in the regular silver finish, but the traditional red dot will be replaced with a rare black one – perhaps to symbolize a panda’s eye. 

Leica will produce just 30 units of each of the two editions – reflecting the rarity of the giant panda itself, according to the press release – and the cameras will only be available from within the Chinese market, including the stores in Hong Kong and Macau. The kits will cost HK$ 110,000 ($ 14,000 / £10,000) for the 28mm lens version, and HK$ 120,000 ($ 15,000 / £11,000) if you prefer the 35mm lens. 

The only store is advertising the camera kits is the Leica Store Hong Kong, but more pictures can be found on the Leica Rumours website.

“Panda” theme fable

As a “living fossil,” the panda is a 300-year-old animal, it still retains many of the ecological structures of the most original features. The panda won the people’s heart around the world and are now known as the animal kingdom’s superstar. The Pandas in China mainly live in Sichuan Province, their numbers are extremely rare and they are referred to as China’s national treasure, therefore, making them a gift with deep meaning when presented as China’s gift to the world. 

Choosing “Panda” as the design theme of this special limited edition is not only because the panda is a national treasure of China, but also because of its image representing Chinese people’s love for peace and kindness to others, strong-will and resilience to environmental change.
