Nikon releases firmware update for 1 J5 mirrorless system camera

Nikon has released a firmware update for its 1 J5 mirrorless system camera. Version 1.01 only comes with one modification over version 1.0 and fixes an issue that prevented additional deletions after multiple shots had been deleted in succession from a single burst of pictures.

The Nikon 1 J5 captures images on a 1″ 21MP BSI CMOS sensor and was originally announced in April 2015. If you own the camera you can check your current firmware version by selecting Firmware version in the Setup menu. If you want to update, the new version is now available for download on the Nikon website.

Ricoh releases Pentax 645Z and K-1 firmware updates and IMAGE Transmitter 2 software v2.3

Ricoh Imaging has released new firmware for its Pentax 645Z medium format camera and K-1 full-format DSLR. The new firmware makes the cameras compatible with the also freshly released version 2.3 of the company’s IMAGE Transmitter 2 software package.

The latter allows the cameras to  be controlled when tethered to a PC or Mac via USB cable and after the update now offers a range of new tethered control options, including drive mode, white balance, image format, size and quality, memory card slot selection, live view magnification and focus fine adjustment in live view. 

As before, you can also adjust essential settings, such as  aperture, shutter-speed, ISO and exposure compensation, or trigger the shutter. Image Transmitter 2 version 2.3 as well as firmware version 1.41 for the K-1 and 1.23 for the 645Z are now available to download on the Ricoh Imaging website.

Fujifilm releases GF 23mm and 110mm lenses, updates roadmap

Fujifilm has released a pair of G-mount lenses for its GFX 50S medium format camera, an adapter for using legacy Fujifilm large format lenses and information about future GF lenses.

The GF 23mm F4 R LM WR, equivalent to 18mm when mounted on the GFX 50S, has a linear focus motor, a nine-blade circular aperture, ED, super ED and aspherical elements, and a Nano GI coating. It’s also weather-resistant and functions down to -10°C/+14°F. It’ll ship in late June for $ 2599.

Also coming in June is the GF 110mm F2 R LM WR, which also has a nine-blade aperture, weather-sealing, and a linear motor. It has three ED and one super ED elements and is equivalent to 87mm when mounted on the GFX 50S. It will be priced at $ 2799.

Fujifilm also released a roadmap for future medium format lenses. Coming later this year is a 45mm F2.8 R WR (equivalent to 36mm), followed by a telephoto prime and teleconverter.

Lastly, the company will soon be offering the ‘View Camera Adapter G,’ which allows you to use the GFX 50S with 4×5 format view cameras. The adapter allows the GFX 50S to be used on a standard Graflok-style mount camera, enabling the use of large format Fujinon lenses, such as the CM series.

Valhalla, N.Y., April 19, 2017 – As the leader in innovation for photographers, FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announces two new GF lenses for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S medium format mirrorless digital camera system, the GF110mmF2 R LM WR (equivalent to 87mm in 35mm format) and the GF23mmF4 R LM WR (equivalent to 18mm in 35mm format). A new GF lens roadmap is released today, along with plans for a new FUJIFILM GFX 50S firmware update this spring.

FUJINON Lenses Guarantee Image Perfection

As part of the GFX system, Fujifilm is launching newly developed, ultra-high resolution FUJINON GF lenses. Taking advantage of the mirrorless system’s structure, the G Mount has a short flange back distance of just 26.7mm that reduces the back focus distance as much as possible. This prevents vignetting and achieves edge-to-edge sharpness. All FUJINON GF lenses have been designed to support sensors of over 100MP.

New Lenses Deliver Image Excellence

The FUJINON GF110mmF2 R LM WR is a medium telephoto lens perfect for portraits. With a focal length equivalent to 87mm in the 35mm format, it achieves a brightness of F2.0 when used wide open to deliver stunning bokeh.

The FUJINON GF23mmF4 R LM WR has a focal length equivalent to 18mm in the 35mm format and is expertly suited for landscape and architectural photography. Despite the super-wide angle of view, distortion is kept to a minimum, and with the high-resolution performance extending all the way to the edges, sharp depiction as if looking at an actual landscape is achieved.

Both new lenses feature fast and quiet autofocus (AF) by using a linear motor, are dust and weather resistant, and are capable of operating in environments as cold as 14°F / -10°C. The lenses combine high performance and reliability for professionals looking for the ultimate in photography tools.

New FUJINON GF Lens Development Roadmap

Fujifilm has publicly announced six lenses for the G Mount lens lineup this year. After the release of the GFX 50S and three G Mount lenses, Fujifilm is now unveiling a new roadmap with the additions of a telephoto prime lens and tele converter, in order to expand products covering telephoto ranges, an area with many requests from users.

With the addition of the two new lenses, the G Mount system lineup has been expanded to a total of eight lenses, achieving a fulfilling lineup to correspond to a wide range of user needs.

Also coming in June 2017 is a new View Camera Adapter G that can be used when shooting with the GFX 50S when using previous FUJINON large format camera lenses, such as the CM FUJINON. The adapter is mounted in the film camera loading position of the view camera which adopts the film format of the 4×5 size.

New Firmware Update Planned

Fujifilm will release a free firmware update for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S later this spring, adding new functionality and improving operability. New functions include computer tethering via Wi-Fi and improved operability in exposure compensation and autofocus performance in difficult scenes.

The GF110mmF2 R LM WR will be available in Late June, 2017 for USD $ 2,799.95 and CAD $ 3,599.99 and the GF23mmF4 R LM WR will be available in Late June, 2017 for USD $ 2,599.95 and CAD $ 3,399.99.

The FUJIFILM GFX 50S Medium Format Camera Body is available now in the U.S. and Canada for USD $ 6,499.95 and CAD $ 8,499.99.

WPO releases short listed winners for Sony World Photography Awards

The World Photography Organisation has announced the shortlisted photographers for what it claims is the world’s largest photography competition – the Sony World Photography Awards. The WPO says that it received 227,596 images in total across categories for amateurs, professionals and students. Photographers from 60 countries are represented among the shortlisted and commended photographs, while entries from 183 countries were submitted.

Professional photographers are competing for the top prize of $ 25,000 plus Sony digital camera equipment, while the best amateur entry will win $ 5000 plus Sony kit and the best student will collect €30,000 of Sony equipment for his or her educational establishment.
The overall and category winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in the 20th April and an exhibition of the winning images will be displayed at London’s Somerset House. Martin Parr has been announced as the winner of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Prize and will be exhibiting alongside the winners, as well as holding a talk.

Celebrating its 10th year anniversary, the Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s largest photography competition. The awards recognize and reward the finest contemporary photography from the last year entered into any of the awards’ four competitions.

February 28, 2017: The shortlisted (top 10) and commended (top 50) photographers for all categories of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s largest photography competition, are announced today. Photographers entered 227,596 images across the awards’ Professional, Open and Youth competitions – shining a spotlight on the medium of photography and the beauty of its art.

Produced by the World Photography Organisation, 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the awards and a decade-long partnership with its headline sponsor, Sony.

The Sony World Photography Awards’ shortlist represents the world’s finest contemporary photography captured over the last year, and displays a huge diversity of extraordinary images in terms of genres, styles and subject matter. Forty-nine countries are represented on the shortlist, reinforcing the awards’ international appeal and unique ability to present the greatest images taken by photographers from all corners of the world on a truly global scale. Photographers from a further 11 countries are seen within the commended list.

The shortlisted photographers across the Professional, Open, Youth and Student Focus competitions impressed the judges with solid narratives and strong visual language complementing the subject matters. Within the shortlist are stunning architectural images and subtle landscapes alongside extraordinary series depicting the dominating world events of the last year. Stand out subject matters include a touching insight into the domestic life of women in Saudi Arabia, heartfelt confessions of Chinese school children, Russian body builders preparing to flex muscle on stage and an intimate series of a private battle with a rare medical condition.

Key shortlists facts and stats

  • Strong increase in entries on 2016 from Asian and South East Asian countries including; China (90 %); Myanmar (183 %) Vietnam (108 %); The Philippines (71 %); and
  • Hong Kong (73 %).
  • Youth competition saw a 56 % increase in entries on 2016.
  • Entries to the Open competition increased 11 % on 2016.
  • Professional competition saw a 13 % increase in the number of photographers entering their work.
  • 183 countries were represented in the submissions – with the most entries coming from (in descending order): China, United Kingdom, Italy, United States, Germany, Russia, India, Spain, France and Poland.
  • 49 countries are represented on the shortlist, with the most shortlisted photographers coming from Italy (22), Germany (17), UK (15), China (14) and Russia (11)
  • Armenia, Cuba, Iceland and Saudi Arabia represented for the first time on the shortlist.

The Sony World Photography Awards are judged anonymously by internationally acclaimed industry professionals, carefully selected by the World Photography Organisation.

The Open and Youth competitions were chaired by Damien Demolder, Photographer and Journalist (UK), and Student Focus was judged by Andrea Kurland, Editor-in-Chief of Huck (UK); Dan Rubin, Photographer & Artistic Director (UK) and Jennifer Shaw, Founder and Creative Director, PhotoNOLA (USA).

The shortlisted photographers now compete for the latest Sony digital imaging equipment and inclusion in the 2017 awards’ book plus cash prizes of $ 25,000 (USD) for the Photographer of the Year, $ 5,000 (USD) for the overall Open winner and €30,000 (Euros) of equipment for the university of the Student Focus winner. All winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on April 20, 2017.

The winning, shortlisted and commended images will all be exhibited as part of the Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition at Somerset House, London. The large-scale exhibition will open April 21 and will feature rarely seen work by Martin Parr, recipient of the awards’ Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize. Canon releases downloadable EOS-1D X Mark II AF Setting Guidebook

Canon has released a downloadable 100MB PDF guide book for the EOS-1D X Mark II camera’s AF system. According to the company, this guide ‘will clarify many of the details about’ this AF system, including menu settings, the effect of various AF Cases, and more.

Canon goes on to point out that most of the information found in this guide is also applicable to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera’s 61-point AF system, which features the same AF sensor as the EOS-1D X Mark II. Canon says of the guide ‘We’re confident having access to this file, on your computer or in a mobile device will answer many of the questions which may arise as you use either of these cameras.’

ONA releases new style bags and accessories for mirrorless users

Premium camera bag brand ONA has announced a set of new small bags and a wrist strap that are aimed at compact system camera users. The Bond Street is an upright bag designed to hold a single body and a couple of lenses, or three or four lenses while the camera is in use or on a strap. The bag has a large flap-over cover which is secured with a locking clasp, while the padded interior comes with a single adjustable divider. ONA offers the Bond Street in black or ‘antique cognac’ leather, or in a ‘smoke’ grey waxed canvas.

A second bag, called the Beacon, is shaped more like a tripod case, but features a pair of zip-up compartments for lenses, accessories or small cameras. Three dividers allow the bag to be converted from a single compartment to four, so a small tripod can be accommodated or four CSC-style lenses. The case has a carry handle as well as a removable shoulder strap, and is made from black ballistic nylon with leather trim.

The company is also to begin sales of a leather wrist strap called Kyoto, which it says is strong enough to support cameras up to 6lbs – though it has been tested to 10lbs. The underside of the strap, which ONA says is made from the same leather as is used for its bags, is suede-lined for comfort. The Kyoto comes in black, ‘dark truffle, and ‘antique cognac’.

The Bond Street bag is set to cost $ 219, while the Beacon will be $ 149. The Kyoto wrist strap will be priced at $ 49. All will be available from January 31st.

Fujifilm releases first round of G-mount medium-format lenses

You’re going to need some lenses to go along with that new Fujifilm GFX 50S, and the company announced a trio of them.

First up is the GF 63mm F2.8 R WR, which is equivalent to 50mm when mounted on the medium-format GFX 50S. It’s small and lightweight, features nine rounded aperture blades and is sealed against dust and moisture (as are the other two lenses announced today). It will be available in February for $ 1499/£1399.

For those seeking a zoom, there’s the GF 32-64mm F4 R LM WR. This lens is equivalent to 25-51mm and has aspherical, ED and Super ED elements and a linear motor-powered internal AF system. The zoom will set you back $ 2299/£2199.

The final lens is a tele-macro model with optical image stabilization rated to 5 stops. The GF 120mm F4 R LM OIS WR Macro is equivalent to 95mm and has 3 ED elements, a linear AF motor and a minimum focus distance of 45cm/18in. The 120mm is priced at $ 2699/£2599.

Three additional lenses will be released by the end of the year, including a 23mm F4, 45mm F2.8 and 110mm F2.

The FUJIFILM GFX 50S Revealed

The FUJIFILM GFX 50S mirrorless digital camera uses the new 51.4MP FUJIFILM G Format 43.8 x 32.9mm sensor with approximately 1.7x the area of a 35mm sensor. In addition to the camera are three new FUJINON GF Lenses that will be followed by three additional lenses later in 2017.

The GFX 50S 51.4MP sensor shows its true potential when making large format prints, capturing majestic landscape photos or reproducing historical documents. Compared to a full size sensor with equivalent megapixels, both resolution and sensitivity are dramatically better due to the larger size of each pixel. As a result, the sensor captures great textures and subtlety of tone that is unique to large size sensors. The texture and tone combine to give a unique three-dimensional effect creating extremely high quality photography. Images captured can be reproduced down to the smallest detail, conveying the texture of the subject, a three-dimensional feeling, and the atmosphere of the scene.

For flash photography in the studio or outdoors during the day, the GFX 50S sensor has a native ISO of 100. The sensor can also be adapted to various aspect ratios, including 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 1:1, 65:24, 5:4, 7:6, all of which are available in large and medium format film cameras.

The FUJIFILM GFX 50S uses the X Processor Pro (also used in the X-Pro2 and X-T2 cameras) and allows photographers to use Fujifilm’s proprietary Film Simulations with a Medium Format sensor. The camera supports Full HD recording at 29.97p/25p/24p/23.98p. Users can enjoy high quality video with no post-processing required by using Film Simulation modes just like they would with a still image. The GFX 50S introduces a new Color Chrome Effect feature that reproduces subtle tones in highly saturated subjects.

Ultimate Performance in a Compact Body

With a compact and lightweight body constructed from magnesium alloy, the FUJIFILM GFX 50S weighs approximately 43 ounces when paired with the FUJINON GF63mmF2.8 R WR, and weighs approximately 60% of a medium format DSLR camera equipped with a sensor of the same size. When compared to a full frame, the weight is almost identical. Overall camera body height and width have also been minimized for maximum flexibility, overturning the common perceptions regarding the mobility of medium format digital cameras.

Bright, Crystal Clear Viewfinder and Large Touchscreen

The FUJIFILM GFX 50S gives users a 3.69M dot organic EL electronic viewfinder and 2.36M dot touchscreen LCD back panel for easy viewing. The EVF is detachable to allow for flexible operation. Users can attach the accessory EVF-TL1 EVF tilt adapter (sold separately) to allow the finder to be tilted to 90° vertically and swung ±45°. A 3.2 inch, 2.36M dot touch panel is used for the rear monitor, with touch operation for the menu, focusing points and image playback. A three-directional tilting LCD screen improves operability and makes viewing images and checking focus even easier.

FUJINON Lenses Guarantee Image Perfection

As part of the GFX system, Fujifilm is launching newly developed, ultra-high resolution FUJINON GF lenses. Taking advantage of the mirrorless system’s structure, the G Mount has a short flange back distance of just 26.7mm that reduces the back focus distance as much as possible. This prevents vignetting and achieves edge-to-edge sharpness. All FUJINON GF Lenses have been designed to support sensors of over 100MP.

GFX lens barrels feature an aperture ring in the same manner as FUJINON XF lenses, for intuitive operation. A new C (Command) Position has been added to the aperture ring, allowing users to change the aperture with the camera’s command dial. The A (Auto) Position and C Position feature a locking button installed on the aperture ring that must be disabled to implement changes.

Built for the Professional, and the Enthusiast

Just as with the flagship X Series models, the FUJIFILM GFX 50S features dedicated dials to independently set aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, the important factors in determining exposure.

Aperture and ISO feature a C (Command) and the shutter speed dial has a T (Time) Position. Setting the dial to this position allows the user to change exposure settings using the command dials on the front and rear of the camera body. The user can choose between these two operation methods according to their preference, ease of use, and the shooting environment.

The GFX 50S is equipped with a 1.28 inch LCD sub monitor on the top of the body. Important exposure data such as aperture and shutter speed is displayed on this screen. This display is extremely useful when shooting on a tripod or tethered to a computer.

A 117-point (9 x 13 / maximum of 425 points when miniaturized) contrast AF system is used on the GFX 50S. High-precision AF on the imaging sensor dramatically improves focusing accuracy with the shallow depth of field produced by medium format lenses. First adopted in the FUJIFILM X-Pro2, focus point selection can be performed by using the Focus Lever, which allows intuitive movement of the focus point. Alternatively, users can select the focus point from the touch panel LCD screen.

Initial Lens Lineup Will Include the Following Three FUJINON Options:

  1. GF63mmF2.8 R WR (equivalent to 50mm in 35mm format)
  2. GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR (equivalent to 25-51mm in 35mm format)
  3. GF120mmF4 Macro R LM OIS WR (equivalent to 95mm in 35mm format)

FUJINON GF63mmF2.8 R WR

The optical system features a construction of 8 groups and 10 elements, including 1 ED lens element. This lens construction is the most suitable for high resolution in compact and stylish design, the external form of this small and lightweight lens has a diameter of just 84.0 x 71.0mm with a weight of only 14.2 ounces \ 405 grams. Using the front group for the focus, aberrations due to focus distance are suppressed, achieving high resolution performance even when wide open from the center to the edges of the lens.

FUJINON GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR

The FUJINON GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR features a construction of 11 groups and 14 elements, 3 aspheric elements, 1 ED lens and 1 super ED lens, allowing this lens to achieve image quality rivalling prime lenses. As a result, the lens demonstrates extremely high performance from the center all the way to the edges. The lens uses internal focusing, reducing the weight of the focus lens and achieving fast and silent AF by driving focus using a linear motor.

FUJINON GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR Macro

The FUJINON GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR Macro has a construction of 9 groups and 14 elements, including 3 ED lens elements. By adopting a floating focus method using a linear motor, silent high-speed autofocusing is achieved while aberrations are corrected, dramatically increasing the resolution. Furthermore, by arranging the ED lenses properly, chromatic aberrations are also properly corrected, contributing to high quality images. In designing this lens the quality of the out of focus area both in front and behind the plane of focus were considered, giving this lens beautiful bokeh. This lens is equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS) effective up to 5.0-stops, making this lens perfect for handheld shooting in low-light situations.

GFX 50S Accessories (sold separately)

  1. Vertical Battery Grip VG-GFX1 – high-performance battery grip is designed to place the release button, dials, and function buttons in the same positions when shooting vertically. The battery grip can be loaded with one NP-T125 dedicated battery, lowering the frequency that batteries need replacing. Also, by connecting the AC-15V accessory (sold separately), it is possible to charge the battery within the grip in approximately 2 hours.
  1. EVF Tilt Adapter EVF-TL1 – mounting this accessory between the camera body and EVF, the angle of the EVF can be changed to angles from 0°?90° vertically and from -45°?+45° horizontally. Doing this allows the user to shoot at various angles while using the viewfinder, greatly increasing the versatility of the finder for different subjects.
  1. H Mount Adapter G – allows you to use SUPER EBC FUJINON HC interchangeable lenses developed for the FUJIFILM GX645AF medium format film camera (discontinued). By attaching this adapter to the GFX 50S, a total of 9 SUPER EBC FUJINON HC interchangeable lenses and 1 tele-converter developed for the GX645AF can be used. While the focusing method will be limited to manual focusing, the lens aperture can be changed using the command dial on the camera body, and shooting with the leaf shutter built in to the lenses is also possible. Using this lens shutter will allow high speed flash synchronization up to a maximum speed of 1/800 sec.

    Also, the adapter is equipped with electrical contacts that can communicate with the camera body, independently creating, saving, and applying correctional data for each lens. The adapter supports Manual and Aperture Priority AE exposure modes.

*A removable tripod foot is included to mount the camera with a heavy or long focal length lens.

  1. View Camera Adapter G – allows the GFX 50S to be used as a digital back. The view camera adapter allows the GFX 50S to be mounted to the standard universal-type back of a view camera. This allows the use of FUJINON large format camera lenses, such as the CM-W FUJINON lens series. The camera or lens shutter can be triggered, allowing the user to choose the optimum method. The large image circle and the bellows of the view camera can be used with tilt, shift and swing movements, effective for product and architectural photography.
    *There may be instances in which the adapter cannot be mounted depending on the shape of the view camera.
  1. Tethered Shooting Solutions – We have the following tethering solutions for photographers, including: X Acquire to transfer images from the camera to a hot folder on your computer for use with your preferred imaging software, Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® and HS-V5 for Windows (sold separately).

    By connecting the GFX 50S to a PC via USB cable and using this software, it is possible to transfer photographed images directly to the PC, as well as control the camera from the PC. Also, by using the Control Panel Window newly added to Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®, additional camera functions become available.

  1. RAW FILE CONVERTER EX2.0 – powered by SILKYPIX (free of charge) RAW development software and Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® / Adobe® Photoshop® CC (sold separately). RAW development software is used for detailed corrections and advanced image processing that isn’t supported by the in-camera RAW conversion. Both software support Fujifilm’s “Film Simulation” modes, allowing creation of image data that is extremely close to Fujifilm’s advanced color reproduction.

HMD Global releases Nokia 6 Android smartphone

HMD Global, the Finnish company that acquired the exclusive Nokia brand licensing rights for mobile phones in late 2016, has released its first model under the legendary Nokia moniker. The Nokia 6 is best described as an upper mid-range device with an unibody that is machined from a solid block of 6000 series aluminum and would not look out of place on a top-end smartphone. 

Images can be viewed and displayed on the 5.5” Full-HD IPS LCD display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass and the Android 7 Nougat OS is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and 4GB of RAM.  The device also features 64GB of expandable storage and dual amplifiers in combination with Dolby’s Atmos surround technology should be capable of delivering excellent sound.

In the camera department the Nokia 6 packs a 16MP camera with 1.0 µm pixel size, F2.0 aperture and phase detection AF. The 8MP unit at the front also has an F2.0 aperture and at 1.12 µm slightly larger pixels. Both cameras can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second.

The Nokia 6 will, at least to start with, be exclusively available through JD.com in China and set you back approximately $ 245. On paper at least, the Nokia 6 looks like a very solid device at an attractive price point and a good first step for re-establishing the Nokia brand in the marketplace. That said, we are still hoping to see Nokia’s rumored camera super-phone revealed at MWC at the end of February.

Canon releases its TS compact and faster Pixma printers to US market

Canon has announced that four compact Pixma printers it released in Europe will now be coming to the USA, with slightly different names. The new Pixma TS models are said to be smaller and quicker than previous versions, taking up less desk space and starting up in just six seconds.

The printing and scanning all-in-one devices offer wireless connections via regular Wi-Fi and through smartphone and Cloud apps – including Apple’s AirPrint. A range of control screen sizes are available across the series, with the higher end models featuring a touch-screen interface for printing and limited editing functions such as the application of filter effects.

Each of the models prints and scans with media of up to A4 in size, and after scanning a warning appears to remind users to remove documents from the scanning platen.

Sigma releases price and availability for sd Quattro H

Lens and camera manufacturer Sigma has announced UK pricing for its forthcoming sd Quattro H APS-H interchangeable lens mirrorless camera: it will cost £1500, and will be available for sale in January 2017. We’ve reached out to Sigma to confirm US pricing and will update this story when we have that information.

The camera was first introduced almost a year ago in February 2016 at the CP+ show in Japan. It uses a 26.6×17.9mm Foveon sensor that the company says offers resolution on a par with a 51MP sensor of traditional design. The sensor actually uses 25.5 million pixels, but due to the unique layout of the sensor Sigma claims it can record twice the detail of standard models.

The camera shoots DNG Raw files, uses both phase and contrast detection AF systems, a 2.36-million-dot EVF and Sigma’s SA mount lenses.

SIGMA sd Quattro H

The SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the SIGMA sd Quattro H, the new high-image-quality digital camera that incorporates the Foveon X3 direct image sensor (generation name: “Quattro”).

The RRP of the SIGMA sd Quattro H is £1,499.99 and they will be available in January 2017.

The SIGMA sd Quattro H is the first camera to feature the newly developed APS-H size Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor with incredible 51-megapixel-equivalent resolution. Featuring the SIGMA SA mount, the new camera is compatible with all of the SIGMA GLOBAL VISION lenses in the Contemporary, Art and Sports lines, and it is designed to take full advantage of these lenses’ superb optical performance. In addition, it is compatible with DNG format, and imaging software from other companies is also available for higher versatility. The DC Crop Mode, which is automatically activated when DC lenses are attached, makes it possible to take full advantage of your lens assets.

Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor
Leveraging the light absorption characteristics of silicon, the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor comprises three layers of photodiodes, each at a different depth within the silicon and each corresponding to a different RGB color. Since it is the only sensor to use this superior vertical color separation technology, it is also the world’s only direct image sensor. Requiring no low-pass filter needed to correct the interference caused by a color filter array, the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor is able to take full advantage of the information carried by light, including color information. The sensor features a pixel ratio of 1:1:4 in the bottom, middle, and top layers and applies the brightness data captured by the top layer to the middle and bottom layers. This unique structure makes possible fast resolution and high-speed data processing.

51 megapixel-equivalent ultra-high image quality
Other camera typically uses a single-layer photo sensor covered by a Bayer filter mosaic, which comprises 50% green, 25% blue, and 25% red squares. In contrast, the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor uses no low-pass filter and is able to capture 100% of the data for blue, green, and red in each of its three layers. Due to this unique structure, the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor can generate up to twice the resolution data of sensors using a Bayer filter. The SIGMA sd Quattro H features a newly developed APS-H size sensor (26.7 x 17.9mm) with 25.5 megapixels in its top layer for an equivalent total of approximately 51 megapixels. This larger sensor takes Foveon image quality to the next level, delivering more detailed images than ever before.

Dual TRUE III for high-speed processing of high-volume data
TRUE (Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine) III is the dedicated image processing engine for the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor. SIGMA’s original algorithm processes data without loss of color detail or other image degeneration to deliver extremely detailed image expression with a noticeable 3D pop. In addition, by using two separate TRUE III engines, the camera is able to process data from the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor at extremely high speed.

14-bit RAW data
RAW data records the light information captured by the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor. Using 14-bit (16,384 gradations) signal processing to convert the analog output signal to digital results in photographic data with fine gradations that effectively represent the smooth, natural gradations of the original subject. RAW data uses lossless compression that prevents image degradation. Moreover, processing RAW data with SIGMA Photo Pro results in images with incomparable natural balance.

DNG format
In addition to SIGMA’s original RAW format (X3F), DNG (Digital Negative) format is available. DNG is the RAW image data that is developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated. DNG file makes it possible to develop images on other softwares, which gives more choices of expression.
*It is not possible to record the image data in DNG and JPEG simultaneously. In addition, the number of pixels to be recorded will change depending on the aspect ratio of shooting images.

New Super-Fine Detail exposure mode
The new Super-Fine Detail (SFD) exposure mode brings out the full performance of the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor. One push of the shutter generates seven different exposures, creating RAW data in the X3I file format. Using this data with the SIGMA Photo Pro software package, the photographer can create noiseless images with an extensive dynamic range. With this new mode, the more detailed imaging potential of the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor is fully leveraged. From each X3I file, individual X3F files may also be generated. The value of SFD exposure mode is especially apparent in studio photography.
Note: To prevent camera shake, SIGMA recommends the use of a tripod.

DC Crop Mode
The Sigma sd Quattro H incorporates an APS-H sized image sensor, and it automatically switches to DC Crop Mode, when DC lenses are attached. Also, it is possible to select On/Off of the DC Crop Mode manually. When a DG lens is mounted and the DC Crop Mode [On] is selected, the coverage of the LCD monitor and the view finder automatically becomes within APS-C size, which makes it easy determining the composition.
*If [On] is selected, the angle of view will be equivalent to 1.5 times longer than the focal length of the lens and the number of pixels to be recorded will be smaller.

Exclusive SIGMA Photo Pro software
SIGMA Photo Pro makes possible intuitive processing of RAW data, leveraging the full power of the information captured by the Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor. Operation is easy: the user simply adjusts horizontal sliders while viewing the photographs to create images that perfectly match his or her vision. In addition, the software turns X3I files created using the camera’s Super-Fine Detail function into high-resolution, noiseless images with outstanding dynamic range. Various modes allow the user to take full advantage of the image sensor’s fine tones and gradations and create monochrome images of impressive depth.

SIGMA Capture Pro software
SIGMA Capture Pro allows the user to control and capture photographs with the camera via a personal computer. After connecting the camera to the computer with a USB cable, the user can take photos and adjust the aperture value, shutter speed, and other settings. The photographs taken using the software may be downloaded to the camera’s SD card, to the computer, or both at the same time. The software also allows the user to continuously shoot a set number of photographs. While connected to the computer, the camera may still be operated and used to take photographs manually.

RAW onboard data processing
The camera can process RAW data (X3F files) into JPEGs without the need for a personal computer. The user can adjust the exposure correction, white balance, color mode, and aspect ratio while viewing the photographs on the LCD monitor.

Combination of two AF detection methods
Phase detection AF is superior for speed performance, while contract detection AF is superior for focusing accuracy. Combining these two methods in a single system delivers AF that is fast and precise at the same time. In addition, this approach to autofocus takes full advantage of the characteristics of high-performance lenses. The Single AF mode is optimal for everyday photography, while the Continuous AF mode is optimal for focusing on a moving object. In the latter mode, pressing the shutter button halfway causes autofocus to operate continuously, while Movement Prediction AF operates at the same time for more accurate autofocusing. A variety of other AF modes are also available. 9-Point Selection AF mode allows the user to select among nine focus frames. Free Movement AF mode allows the user to select the focus frame with high precision. Face Detection AF mode detects human faces and prioritizes focusing on them. The AF assist light incorporated in the camera body makes possible the use of AF even in low-light conditions.

Focus peaking function
This function puts a colored outline (white, black, red, or yellow) around the subject in the viewfinder for instant confirmation of the person or object currently in focus.

Continuous shooting of up to 8 images in RAW format
The DDR III high-speed, high-volume memory is approximately twice the capacity of that of the SIGMA dp Quattro. This allows the SIGMA sd Quattro H to capture up to 8 RAW images (X3F files) in High size during continuous shooting. Leveraging high-speed data transfer and processing, the SIGMA sd Quattro H offers a continuous shooting speed of up to 4.4 frames per second. (4.8 frames per second when it is set as DC crop Mode.?As a further option, when Low size is used, the SIGMA sd Quattro H offers a continuous shooting speed of up to 6.2 frames per second and continuous shooting of up to 16 images. (6.8 frames per second when it is set as DC crop Mode.

Aspect ratio selection
To accommodate various photographic needs, six different aspect ratios are available, including 3:2 (standard), 1:1 (square), 21:9 (similar to cinema widescreen), and 7:6 (similar to 6×7 camera format). When using an aspect ratio other than 3:2, the user may select a black or semi-transparent frame. The semi-transparent frame can serve as a sports finder, allowing the user to monitor activity outside the frame. The aspect ratio of images recorded as RAW data can also be changed in SIGMA Photo Pro.
*It is not possible to change the aspect ratio of DNG files after shooting.

High-resolution electronic viewfinder
The high-resolution 2.36 mega-pixel electronic viewfinder features near-100% viewfinder coverage and a 1.09 magnification ratio. The viewfinder incorporates three lenses with the outermost lens specially coated to ensure a clear field of view. Using a switch next to the viewfinder, the user can toggle between displaying the image in the viewfinder and the monitor. In AUTO mode, the camera automatically switches to the viewfinder display when the user is looking through it and to the monitor when he or she is not. This mode allows seamless use of the viewfinder to take photographs and use of the monitor to access settings and confirm results. For extra convenience, many functions of the monitor are available via the electronic viewfinder itself, such as setting values, grid lines, electronic level, zoom, focus peaking and more.

Dual monitors
In addition to the 1.62 mega-pixel 3.0 inch TFT LCD main monitor, the rear of the camera features a sub-monitor that displays the number of remaining shots on the SD card, shutter speed, aperture value, ISO level, and more. This extra monitor makes it easy to watch the live view and confirm key information at the same time. A sheet of special material lies between the two LCDs and the protective glass that covers them. This sheet prevents air pockets from forming and minimizes reflections, ensuring excellent display visibility in sunlight.

Electronic level
Allowing the user to view the camera’s horizontal and vertical position while shooting, this function is useful in precisely establishing composition.

Tough magnesium alloy body
The exterior and main frame of the camera body features a tough magnesium alloy. The rigidity and strength of this alloy significantly contribute to the reliability and quality of the camera as a whole.

Dust- and splash-proof design
O-rings and sealing material effectively seal buttons and seams to prevent the intrusion of dust and water, making the camera an excellent choice for pros working under tough conditions.

Dust protector on lens mount
To prevent the intrusion of dust and debris into the camera body, the lens mount features a dust protector sealed with optical glass. Additional sealing around the mount further lessens the chance of dust entering the camera body.

Intuitive user interface helps user focus attention on creative work
Building on the success of previous SIGMA user interfaces, the new UI is more intuitive than ever. Located next to the shutter button, the Quick Set button provides instant access to the Quick Set Menu, which allows the user to quickly adjust commonly used settings while continuing to look through the viewfinder. Located on the top of the body, the LOCK switch prevents the accidental pressing of buttons, helping keep the user’s attention on the creative work. The buttons that are locked with this switch may also be customized by the user. Located on the rear of the camera near the selector are several controls for commonly used functions. Easily accessed with the thumb of the right hand, they include the menu button, focus frame button, and AEL/AF button with lever.

Quick Set Menu
Located next to the shutter button, the Quick Set button provides instant access to eight commonly used functions, including aspect ratio, ISO, white balance, and color mode. The user can quickly adjust settings using the selector and front and rear dials. Users can also customize the functions included in the Quick Set Menu and the order in which they appear.

System camera compatible with all SIGMA GLOBAL VISION lenses
Featuring the SIGMA SA mount, the new camera is compatible with all of the SIGMA GLOBAL VISION lenses in the Contemporary, Art and Sports lines, and it is designed to take full advantage of these lenses’ superior optical performance.

High-resolution Super-High size images
A variety of file sizes is available to accommodate a wide range of user needs. Using High-size files brings out the best performance from the image sensor, while using Low-size files increases the number of shots that can be stored in memory. In both of these file sizes, the camera can simultaneously create RAW and JPEG data. In addition, the camera can create JPEG files in S-HI size, appropriate for large prints, as well as in S-LO size, which is ideal for online sharing.

Higher-precision white balance
A new algorithm enhances the precision of auto white balance, even optimizing white balance in images with multiple light sources. The Auto (Lighting Source Priority) mode leaves the color of light sources intact for extra atmosphere, while the Auto (Default) mode allows the camera to automatically make white balance adjustments. In total, twelve white balance modes are available, including three custom modes. It is also possible to adjust white balance based on the specific image and to set the color temperature in Kelvin. Moreover, each white balance mode can be fine-tuned for detailed correction of white balance and creative filter effects.

Full range of Color Modes
Color Modes can adjust color tones and contrast to best suit each photographic scene. The range of color modes includes Cinema, which reduces saturation and emphasizes shadows for a film-like effect; and Sunset Red, which emphasizes red for more impressive sunset shots. Color Modes make artistic expression easier than ever.
* It is not possible to select some of the Color Modes when it is set as DNG.

Custom bracketing display
This function allows the user to take a single shot but save several versions of the photograph with customized white balance, Color Mode, and other settings. This function can be combined with auto bracketing to help increase the chance of getting the perfect shot.

Monochrome options
The Filtering Effect allows contrast to be changed as if the images had been taken using a color filter for black and white photography. The Toning Effect allows warm, cold, sepia, and other color tones to be added to monochrome photos to emphasize the subject in creative ways. SIGMA Photo Pro makes possible optimal monochrome processing of RAW data without any color processing, producing high-resolution monochrome images with exceptional dynamic range and outstanding reproduction of the tones of highlights and shadows.

SD card
The camera is compatible with compact and portable SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. The camera features the UHS-I standard, allowing large volumes of data to be recorded at high speed. The camera is also compatible with Eye-Fi, allowing wireless transfer of images to personal computers, smartphones, and more when an Eye-Fi card is inserted (sold separately).

Dedicated high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery
The camera includes the high-capacity BP-61 lithium-ion battery and BC-61 charger. The optional SAC-7 AC adapter allows the camera to run AC power from a wall outlet.

Dedicated cable release
By connecting the dedicated CABLE RELEASE CR-31 (sold separately) to the camera’s USB port, the user can release the shutter without touching the camera. This function is useful when the user wishes to release the shutter from a distance, avoid camera shake, or shoot with a low shutter speed.

USB 3.0 port
The USB 3.0 Micro B port allows the user to connect the camera to a personal computer to download high-volume image files at high speed.

HDMI port
The MINI HDMI Type C port allows the user to connect the camera to an HD television with an HDMI cable (sold separately) and view photographs, camera menus, and even the viewfinder image in high definition on a big screen.
