Hasselblad releases pricing for XV mount adapter

Owners of V-mount Hasselblad lenses will now be able to use their modern and historic glass on the front of the Hasselblad X1D. The XV adapter hinted at late last year has now been officially announced and will cost €199 / $ 249 / £179.

This adapter opens the X1D system to over sixty lenses that go back to the beginning of the Hasselblad square format and right up to the beginning of the H system, while the XH adapter allows the fitting of lenses up to the current day. With the XPan adapter as well, Hasselblad now has a solution to allow all its lenses to be used on the X1D.

As there are no mechanical connects between the camera and the lens adapter the X1D will only function in electronic shutter mode and of course focus and aperture control will be manual only. The adapter weighs 227g, and measures 64mm in length and 84mm in diameter.

Leica releases Elpro 52 close-up lens adapter

Leica has announced the Elpro 52, a new close-up converter lens for select Leica M and TL lenses.

As its name suggests, the Elpro 52 can be screwed onto the front of any Leica M and TL lens that has a 52mm front filter thread. It also comes with stepping ring adapters so it’ll work with 46mm and 49mm front filter threads as well, making it compatible with more than 20 different lenses.

‘The Leica Elpro 52 will expand upon the capabilities of selected Leica M- and TL-Lenses, making them more suitable for macro photography,’ says Leica in the press release. ‘This lens holds true to the standard focusing and aperture settings Leica is known for, and ensures a light-weight and compact style as to not interfere with the lens handling while mounted.’

Fujifilm releases Provia 100-branded instant noodles in South Korea

Fujifilm has taken an unusual departure from its regularly scheduled programming to bring you…instant noodles?

Yes, you read that correctly — as part of a promotional giveaway, Fujifilm Korea has created Fujifilm Film Simulation Instant Noodles, a line of instant noodles that’s wrapped with the same branding used on Fujifilm’s Provia 100 color reversal film packs.

According to the description, the Provia 100-branded noodles taste like ‘hot and tangy kimchi.’ For those unfamiliar with kimchi, Wikipedia describes it as ‘a staple in Korean cuisine […] a traditional side dish made from salted and fermented vegetables, most commonly napa cabbage and Korean radishes.’

It appears as though you won’t be able to get the instant noodles outside of South Korea. If you happen to be reading this from South Korea — or plan on taking a trip there soon — you can jump over to Fujifilm Korea’s promotional page and secure yourself some film-inspired instant noodles.

Tamron releases updated firmware for 28-75mm F2.8 for Sony E-Mount

Tamron has released firmware version 2.0 for its 28-75mm Di III RXD, addressing previously acknowledged autofocus issues.

The update specifically addresses focusing issues on Sony E-mount cameras while shooting video, including ‘autofocusing operation and loss of focus,’ while also addressing ‘flicker on peripheral parts of the image when zooming.’

Cactus releases firmware to add TTL control for Canon flashes

Chinese flash system manufacturer Cactus has released new firmware for its V6 II Transceiver that will allow it to wirelessly communicate TTL information between a Canon or Cactus flash and a Canon camera. The X-TTL update makes it possible to trigger Canon flashes and retain full TTL control with that flash either on or off camera.

Canon flashes can be used on their own or in groups of Cactus models, while HSS and remote power controls are also possible. The same V6 II transceiver can be used with Nikon, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Sony, Sigma and Fujifilm systems, but with Canon systems only manual power and zoom controls are possible.

Voigtlander releases details and price of its 110mm F2.5 Macro APO-Lanthar for Sony E-Mount

Lens manufacturer Cosina has provided more specification for the Macro APO-Lanthar 100mm F2.5 lens that it first announced at CP+ in March. The E-mount lens is due to begin shipping in August 2018, and is quoted on the Japanese website as having a price of ¥148,000 – approximately $ 1350/£1050 before tax.

The new manual focus lens offers 1:1 macro and a closest focusing distance of 35cm. It uses three floating lens groups for focusing to ensure optimal quality at all distances – according the Cosina – and apochromatic correction to produce high resolution and detailed images for the full frame Sony sensors.

With electric contacts the lens can transmit aperture and focusing information to the camera, which will be recorded in the EXIF data of the image as well as being used to inform the 5-axis image stabilization systems of the Sony range. The contacts also allow manual focus assistance to be triggered by turning the focusing ring.

Macro APO-LANTHAR 110mm f/2.5 E-Mount

Voigtländer MACRO APO-LANTHAR 110mm F2.5 is a high performance manual focus 1:1 macro lens optimized for the imaging sensors of Sony mirrorless cameras. Inheriting the APO-LANTHAR designation, the lens is highly corrected to eliminate optical aberrations including longitudinal chromatic aberration. The lens covers the full frame image area, and achieves a maximum image reproduction of 1:1 life size with no additional attachments. In order to ensure subjects from minimum focus distance to infinity are captured with extremely high image quality, a 3-group floating mechanism is employed to adjust three optical groups according to focus distance. The 110mm focal length on full frame format ensures not only a good working distance from subjects for macro shooting, but also its angle of view for portraiture does not look too cropped in comparison with 135mm and 200mm lenses. Another attractive feature is the ability to create images with a strong out-of-focus ‘bokeh’ effect, made possible by the 110mm focal length and F2.5 maximum aperture. This lens is a manual focus and manual aperture design, but also features electrical contacts that enable the lens settings at image capture to be included in the Exif information of the image data. Furthermore, the lens is installed with a distance encoder to enable support for 5-axis image stabilization on bodies with this feature, by providing distance to subject information used to compensate for camera shake. Focus peaking while manual focusing is also supported.

Apple releases four new iPhone X mobile photography video tutorials

Apple released a new batch of mobile photography tutorial videos this week, each briefly demonstrating how to perform various camera actions using the flagship iPhone X. The OLED-equipped iPhone X features dual rear 12MP cameras coupled with optical image stabilization and optical zoom.

The four new videos were published on June 14 and guide iPhone X users through the following functions: shooting with the backlight, shooting in burst mode, recording in slow motion, and creating panoramas.

Apple semi-regularly updates video tutorials for its products, and previously released a batch of similar mobile photography instructional videos for the iPhone 8. A full playlist of Apple’s mobile photography video tutorials, including those covering older iPhone models, is available here. The four newest videos are below.

Samyang releases 85mm F1.4 AF lens for Canon DSLRs

Exactly one week after dropping its 24mm F2.8 AF lens for full-frame Sony cameras, Samyang is back at it again. Today, Samyang announced the release of a new 85mm F1.4 AF lens for Canon DSLRs.

The telephoto prime is yet another addition in Samyang’s growing portfolio of autofocus lenses. This lens in particular uses an upgraded dual-motor system to deliver faster, more accurate autofocus performance, according to Samyang. The minimum focusing distance is 90cm/35.43in, roughly 5cm more than Canon’s 85mm F1.4 IS USM lens, which has a minimum focusing distance of 85cm/33.46in.

The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 EF lens weighs 485g/1.07lbs and measures in at 72mm long without the lens hood or rear cap. It’s constructed of nine optical elements in seven groups, including hybrid aspherical elements and an “ultra multi coating” designed to eliminate flares and ghosting. Samyang has also included weather-sealing, which should make it a little more robust in tough environments.

The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 EF lens, which sells under the Rokinon brand name in the United States, will be available in July 2018 for £599.99 (~$ 800). This puts it at roughly half the price of Canon’s 85mm F1.4 IS USM lens, which retails for $ 1,600.

DxO updates Nik Collection, releases PhotoLab 1.2 with U Point local adjustments

DxO Photolab 1.2 includes improved local adjustments.

DxO Labs – which split from DxO Mark in January – announced bankruptcy a few months back, but with a silver-lining: its flagship desktop software, Photolab, would receive a free update by summer. The company also announced that the Nik Software Collection – purchased from Google in late 2017 – would receive its first update since 2017.

As of today, both promises have been fulfilled, in a welcome indication that DxO Labs seems committed to its desktop editing business.

Nik Collection 2018

DxO engineers spent about six months working on code improvements to the Nik Collection, mostly with the aim of fixing bugs to ensure operational stability on the latest 64-bit Macs and PCs. There are no new features, but all seven plugins should also now work properly with the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop and Elements.

This is the first update to the collection since 2017, but it will come at a cost: until July 1st you can download the collection for $ 49.99 / £39.99 / €49.99. But after July 1st it will cost $ 69 / £59 / €69. There’s no word yet from DxO on how much future updates will cost, but we’re told that the company plans on releasing a new version yearly and it seems likely that those who download version 2018 will get a discount on future versions.

Photolab 1.2

The latest version of Photolab, which is free for current users, incorporates the Nik Collection’s U Point technology, adding a much-loved set of local adjustments to the popular editing software. This update also adds hue and selective tone local adjustments, as well as support for recent cameras.

RIP DxO ONE Camera

This final bit of news should come as no surprise, but the DxO ONE camera is officially discontinued. The camera will continue to be sold by some retailers in the USA and France as long as they have inventory, so if you’ve been sitting on the fence about buying one, you’d better hurry.

DxO PhotoLab 1.2 improves its local adjustment tools that integrate U Point technology

Recently awarded the 2018 TIPA Award for Best Image Processing Software, DxO PhotoLab (formerly DxO OpticsPro) offers a complete RAW and JPEG processing solution based on optical corrections from mathematically established laboratory models, as well as such exclusive features as PRIME noise reduction technology and DxO Smart Lighting intelligent exposure optimization.

DxO has integrated Nik Software’s U Point technology, acquired from Google in late 2017, into DxO PhotoLab. This exclusive technology allows photographers to apply local settings in a non-destructive RAW stream to specific areas in an image.

With version 1.2 of DxO PhotoLab, DxO continues to enhance its software by adding the Hue (HSL) and Selective Tone settings, to unblock locally dark areas or recover overexposed areas. Ricoh releases SDK for Pentax cameras, opening the door to 3rd party remote control apps

Ricoh has released a software development kit (SDK) for Pentax cameras that allows third-party developers to create mobile and desktop apps that can control the camera remotely via USB cable or Wi-Fi.

The wireless package is available for Android and iOS. The USB-version can be downloaded for Microsoft .NET Framework and for C++ (Linux, Windows or MacOS). Both variants offer functions for controlling Pentax’s DSLRs and medium format cameras remotely, including photo and video capture, live view and adjustment of camera settings.

The SDK should allow for straightforward development of sophisticated remote control apps and other, more specialized, camera software, without any need for reverse engineering.
