Phase One releases Capture One 12 with new interface, third-party plug-in support

Phase One has released Capture One 12, the latest edition of its image editing software. The updated product features a redesigned interface, revamped menu aligned between the Mac and Windows versions, linear and gradient masks via the new Parametric Masking Engine, luminosity masking and a new plug-in ecosystem.

Capture One 12’s new plug-in ecosystem supports third-party extensions and will soon have access to plug-ins for sharing and editing, as well as connecting the software to “specialized editing tools,” according to the company. Phase One’s Capture One Plugin SDK enables developers to create their own plug-ins for the software.

The updated product also adds new Fujifilm Film Simulation, lens, and camera support, expands AppleScript support for macOS users, and features a redesigned keyboard shortcut manager. Capture One 12 supports more than 500 camera models across all major brands.

Phase One is offering Capture One 12 with a perpetual license to new customers for $ 299 USD, but existing customers can purchase the update starting at $ 149 USD. Alternatively, the company offers Capture One Pro Sony 12 and Capture One Pro Fujifilm 12 for $ 219 USD. Buyers also have a subscription option starting at $ 15/month for Capture One Pro 12 and $ 14/month for the Fuji and Sony editions.

New features and tools in Capture One 12

Powerful, refined interface

Capture One 12 introduces a newly re-designed, contemporary interface, designed to make Capture One easier to use during long editing sessions and to make discovery, experimentation, and customizability easier than ever. New iconography better conveys tool functionality, and the new slider design, the spacing of the tools, and font size increase improves both the look and the usability of the program.

The result is a new environment that feels more welcoming for new users while being more customizable for power-users.

Revamped menu system

Every menu item in Capture One 12 has been evaluated, categorized, and organized according to its logical function and grouped along with associated tasks, which makes it easier to find the desired controls and settings, and brings the Mac and Windows menu options into alignment.

Luminosity masking

One of a trio of new masking tools, Luma Range allows users to quickly create masks based on the brightness of pixels in an image and is the most powerful luminance masking tool of its kind.

This masking technique is particularly powerful in landscapes and high-key portraits, as it allows for nearly-instantaneous masks in complex scenes based on brightness—eliminating the need to tediously paint complex masks. Once a luminance range is created and adjusted using the precision mask-adjustment tools, nearly any editing tool can be applied to the mask.

The masks created with the Luma Range tool are dynamic and can easily be tweaked and modified at any point in the workflow. Unlike a hand-drawn mask, Luma Range adjustments can be applied from one image to another, and the effect will be based on the luminance of each image. This functionality is a huge time-saver as it eliminates the need to create precision masks for each frame in a shoot.

The new Luma Range selection masks open up an incredible range of editing possibilities, from selective noise reduction to precise color grading.

Linear Gradient Mask

Capture One 12 takes gradient masks to the next level, allowing for editable, moveable, rotatable—and best of all—asymmetric gradient masks. Using a brand-new Parametric Masking Engine, Capture One allows for adjustments in the size, shape, and symmetry of the masks with simple mouse clicks and key presses, truly redefining the possibilities of linear gradients in Capture One. Rotate, feather and adjust a mask with a precision never before possible.

Radial Gradient Mask

The new Radial Gradient mask tool enables quick, flexible radial masks, useful for vignette and other adjustments with a desired falloff effect. Using the same Parametric Masking Engine as the Linear Gradient mask tool, radial masks can be adjusted, rotated and moved after creation for extreme control over desired effects.

Redesigned Keyboard Shortcut manager

Capture One is known for its ability to custom-assign and custom-configure virtually every task to a keyboard shortcut. With more than 500 individually-assignable and customizable commands, it’s essential to be able to find the exact shortcut, without having to hunt through hundreds of choices.

Users can now search by the specific menu command, or by the assigned keyboard shortcut, making it easy to find and manage shortcuts. To unify the interface between the Mac and Windows versions the new menu system has been moved to the same location on both platforms, making it easier for workgroups to stay in sync.

New plug-in ecosystem

To address the needs of photographers and creatives looking to share, edit and collaborate on their images, the new Capture One plug-in ecosystem will allow for powerful third-party extensions. The new Capture One SDK will allow any developer to create custom solutions to expand Capture One, and to transform Capture One into an open ecosystem.

Users of Capture One will be able to extend the platform with the upcoming addition of plug-ins that allow for sharing, editing, and that can connect Capture One to a variety of specialized editing tools.

For developers, the Capture One Plugin SDK—available as a free download—will provide access to the broad base of passionate professional and enthusiast photographers that use Capture One. Developers are now able to create solutions that leverage the image-editing and organizational prowess of Capture One, and the added capabilities of third-party resources.

The initial Capture One Plugin SDK allows for plugin development, and can be leveraged for common tasks like sharing, sending files to external editors, and allowing images to be opened in other applications, and more.

Fujifilm Film Simulation support

Fujifilm X-Series and GFX-series cameras feature Film Simulations, which are in-camera tonal adjustments that faithfully reproduce the color and tonality of classic Fujifilm photographic films. Sixteen Film Simulations are available, ranging from color stocks like Provia and Velvia to black and white film like Acros. These simulations give Fujifilm users the ability to digitally capture images with the feel of beloved photographic films.

Thanks to the collaboration between Capture One and Fujifilm, photographer’s using Fujifilm’s renowned X-Series and GFX-series cameras will be able to edit photos complete with Fujifilm Film Simulations. These in-camera settings have been faithfully reproduced in Capture One, to provide an identical experience when working with files, resulting in images that appear the same as if the Film Simulation picture profiles were applied in-camera.

Extended AppleScript support

Users of Capture One on Mac OS can take advantage of extended AppleScript support for automation and workflow streamlining. More than a dozen of Capture One 12’s areas and properties can now be directly modified with AppleScript, adding to the existing, robust AppleScript support in previous versions of Capture One.

New camera and lens support

DJI releases nine new accessories for Ronin-S handheld stabilizer

DJI has released a total of nine new accessories for its Ronin-S handheld camera stabilizer, expanding the system and making it more attractive to ambitious video shooters and film makers. Below is a quick run-down of each of the new accessories.

The new Focus Motor enables motorized focusing of lenses and offers lens control with an accuracy of .02 degrees. The Command Unit attaches to the side of the stabilizer and lets users to modify settings such as motor parameters, remote control and operation modes without the need to connect a mobile device.

The Ronin-S BG37 Grip offers an extra 12 hours of operating time via a 2400mAh built-in battery and the Top Hotshoe Bracket mounts to the camera hot shoe and the Ronin for extra security during fast-paced shooting, for example when the stabilizer is mounted to a moving vehicle. The grip comes with a cold-shoe, so you can still attach accessories with the adequate connector.

Sigma releases official pricing for trio of Photokina lenses

Sigma has announced the prices for three of the lenses it announced at the Photokina trade show in September. The 40mm F1.4 DG Art lens for full frame cameras will cost $ 1400 while the 56mm F1.4 DC DN for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras will cost $ 479. The Sony E-mount version of its 105mm F1.4 Art will sell for around $ 1600. All three will be available this month.

The 56mm F1.4 completes a trio of small, comparatively affordable fast primes for Micro Four Thirds and Sony’s E-mount. The 16mm, 30mm and 56mm F1.4s act as a wide, normal and portrait telephoto on APS-C and as a 32, 60 and 112mm equiv on Micro Four Thirds.

Sigma releases interchangeable lens compatibility notes for Nikon Z7 and Canon EOS R

Sigma has released compatibility notes for its interchangeable lenses when used with the Canon EOS R and Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, as well as updated compatibility information related to the Nikon Z7. The updates follow Sigma’s compatibility note for the Nikon Z7 released in late September, during which time the company said it would continue testing products and publishing future updates.

According to the company, its interchangeable lenses for Canon mount “do not have any issues with general operation” when used with the Canon EOS R and EF-EOS R adapter. However, users will need to disable the in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer feature before using a Sigma interchangeable lens with the model.

Sigma states:

When the Digital Lens Optimizer is switched [OFF], but “Peripheral illumination correction”, “Chromatic aberration correction” and “Distortion correction”, located within the in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function is switched [ON], the appropriate corrections can be achieved in accordance with the optical characteristics of each lens. This is applicable to lenses listed below which were released after March, 2018, or those of which firmware has been updated to Ver.2.0 or later.

In regards to its updated Nikon Z7 compatibility data, Sigma has released a list of 36 interchangeable lenses for Nikon mount that it tested and found compatible with the Nikon Z7 and Mount Adapter FTZ. When used together, “both AF and AE operate without any issue,” the company stated in its latest release.

After careful investigation, we confirmed some phenomena particular to 4 products listed below. Regarding a firmware update for the SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art, 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art and 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art, we are going to announce them at a later date.

24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art

[Phenomenon]- It may occasionally stop recording while shooting video. It is planned to be resolved by a firmware update.

50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art

[Phenomenon] – When starting to shoot with the subject completely out of focus, the response to the AF operation is intermittent. It is necessary to release several times or to turn the focus ring once to release. It is planned to be resolved by a firmware update.

85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art

[Phenomenon] – It may occasionally show overexposure when narrowing down the aperture from F5.6 while shooting. It is planned to be resolved by a firmware update.

APO 800mm F5.6 EX DG HSM

[Phenomenon] – Please focus using MF, since it is difficult to achieve sufficient focusing accuracy. There is no plan for a firmware update.

When the lenses listed below are used, due to product specifications, the in-camera stabilization cannot be turned off. In addition, the Auto Power Off function cannot be used. Please manually turn the power [OFF] after shooting.

We have previously confirmed that some phenomena such as AF not working correctly with some lenses released or shipped from SIGMA before November, 2013, when they are used on Nikon’s digital SLR cameras incorporating the latest firmware. Under this circumstance, we will update the lens firmware free of charge. If the products do not operate on a Z7, even when they are listed above, the lens firmware update may improve the situation.

For customers who have these applicable products, please contact your nearest authorized SIGMA subsidiary / distributor for further details.

Hex releases new camera backpack and sling as part of its 2018 Ranger Collection

Bag and accessory manufacturer Hex has shared its latest pair of bags as part of its 2018 lineup, the Ranger Collection. The collection consists of a clamshell backpack and a sling backpack that are “designed to be discrete and street-ready for the modern photographer.”

The Clamshell Backpack is constructed of water-resistant 500D Cordura nylon and uses what Hex says is a patent-pending clamshell design. It features a typical internal foam divider system that can be arranged to fit your equipment and uses YKK zippers with metal pulls to access the compartments.

According to Hex, you can expect to fit one or two DSLRs and a few lenses, ranging from small primes to telephoto zoom lenses. There are also dedicated pockets for your phone and laptops up to 15 inches. A hidden rain cover is also included for when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Like the Clamshell Backpack, the DSLR Sling is constructed of water-resistant 500D Cordura nylon and YKK zippers with custom metal pulls. One of the most interesting details about the DSLR Sling is its ability to pack down flat when the bottom panel is removed, making it easier to travel with as an auxiliary bag.

The DSLR Sling can carry a non-gripped camera body and a lens or two, depending on what glass you’re using. It’s not large enough to fit a laptop, but there are dedicated faux-fur lined pockets for smartphones and even smaller tablets.

The Hex Clamshell Backpack and DSLR Sling are available through Hex’s online shop. They retail for $ 199.95 and $ 99.95, respectively. Both bags come in black and camo colorways.

Red releases Hydrogen One product photos, confirms release date

When it was first announced in July 2017 the RED Hydrogen One super-phone created quite the splash, thanks to a Leica-made 5.7″ lightfield holographic display and a pin-based expansion system that allows for attaching a range of hardware modules. The system is similar to Motorola’s Moto Mods, but probably more focused toward high-end video given the brand we’re dealing with.

Since then delivery has been pushed back several times, most recently because the company needed some extra time to receive carrier certification. However, now we have a fixed release date: November 2nd. Pre-orders will ship on October 9th.

The Hydrogen One aluminum version will be available through AT&T, Verizon and Telcel
for $ 1295

Additionally, Red founder Jim Stannard has shared several actual product photos on the Hydrogen product forum that allow for a good look at the device’s large dual-camera module. The Hydrogen One also comes with a rugged-looking design that features a lot of carbon fiber, giving the phone a pretty unique appearance.

The price tag will unfortunately be unique as well. The Hydrogen One aluminum version will be available through AT&T, Verizon and Telcel for $ 1295. The titanium variant will be out in 2019 and set you back an additional $ 200.

Toshiba releases new UHS-II EXCERIA Pro SD cards in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities

Toshiba has unveiled its UHS-II EXCERIA PRO N502 SD cards, a new line of memory cards for the European market designed specifically for capturing 4K and 8K ultra-HD video.

The UHS-II EXCERIA PRO SD cards, which will come in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities, have a minimum data transfer speed of 90MB/s, the requirements for the Video Speed Class 90 label they’ve been given (which vastly exceeds the U3 and Class 10 designations the cards also carry). The maximum read speed is 270MB/s, while the maximum write speed is 260MB/s.

In addition to being x-ray proof, shockproof and waterproof, the EXCERIA PRO N502 SD cards can withstand temperatures ranging from -25ºC to 85ºC (-13ºF to 185ºF) without condensation. Each card includes a five-year warranty when purchased through an authorized retailer.

The cards appear to be limited to the UK, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey for the time being, with no listings currently available. Prices are unavailable at the time of writing this article. We will update accordingly if a product page goes live.

Blackmagic releases first Pocket Cinema Camera 4K footage

Blackmagic Design has released three videos demonstrating the performance of its upcoming Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. It updates the Pocket Cinema Camera introduced in 2013, was revealed at NAB 2018 in April and is expected to launch next month.

Ahead of that launch, Blackmagic Design has published the videos “Nature” by Mark Wyatt, “Models Walking at Night” by John Brawley, and “Models Walking in Daylight” also by John Brawley, each showcasing the upcoming camera’s capabilities. This is the first time footage from the camera has been published.

Both Wyatt’s and Brawley’s experiences with the camera are provided in each video description. In describing his time with the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, Wyatt said:

I had the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for only a few days, but overall I was really impressed by it. The weight of the camera is very liberating, especially when you are used to using larger camera systems. The screen is big and bright enough to use in daylight, which I found great for judging focus and exposure. And, the colors too on the screen, were also nicely represented. In fact, I would argue it is Blackmagic’s best screen yet.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a full size Four Thirds HDR sensor offering a native 4096 x 2160 resolution and 13 stops of dynamic range. The upgraded model also features dual native ISO, a USB-C expansion port with direct support for external storage drives, a new multi-function grip design, and much more.

DJI releases highly anticipated Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom compact drones

DJI has announced the Mavic 2 Pro, featuring a 1-inch type CMOS sensor (left), and the Mavic 2 Zoom, which includes a 2x optical zoom lens (right).

Drone manufacturer DJI has announced the arrival of two new drones to its Mavic series: the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom.

The Mavic 2 Pro is the first drone with an integrated Hasselblad camera—a project that the companies collaborated on for the last two years. The Mavic 2 Pro utilizes a newly redesigned 1-inch CMOS sensor and 10-bit Dlog-M color profile, which allows the Mavic 2 Pro to capture four times the level of color as its predecessor, the Mavic Pro. The drone can shoot 20-megapixel images, has an ISO sensitivity of 100-6400, an aperture range of F2.8 to F11 and shoots 4K video with 10-bit HDR.

The Mavic 2 Zoom is the first consumer-oriented drone with zooming capabilities. It offers users a 2x optical zoom (24mm-48mm) and a 2x digital zoom (49mm-96mm) and can capture lossless video in full HD resolution. It’s built around a redesigned 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, can shoot 12-megapixel images, has an ISO range of 100-3200 and improved focusing speed thanks to its upgraded phase and contrast detection.

A new auto mode on the Mavic 2 Zoom, called Super Resolution, uses the drone’s optical zoom to shoot nine individual images of a scene and then automatically stitch them together into a 48-megapixel photo. The drone’s zooming capabilities have led to new video modes too. Dolly Zoom QuickShot allows videographers to quickly replicate cinematic techniques popularized by folks like Hitchcock, where the camera zooms in on a subject while moving backwards.

The bodies of the two new models are identical, and are slightly larger than the original Mavic Pro; like the orginal, they also fold down for easy transport. Both are equipped with omnidirectional sensors that can track the drone’s movements left, right, up, down, forward and backward, utilize a 3-axis mechanical stabilization and feature new auxiliary lights on the bottom to help with landing and flying in low-light situations (like dusk and dawn). A redesigned winglet and new motors make the two drones quieter than earlier models.

Both models can record at a maximum bitrate of 100 Mbps using H.265 compression, include 8GB of internal storage, and can capture 4K video at up to 30fps as well as HD video up to 120fps. Each has a respectable flight time of 31 minutes.

The new drones also feature updated intelligent flight modes like Hyperlapse and ActiveTrack 2.0, which can now avoid obstacles and continuously track subjects thanks to the 10 sensors found on each drone. OcuSync also gets an update and help keeps the controller and the drone in communication—the Mavic 2 drones can transmit 1080p video up to five miles away from the controller.

The Mavic 2 Pro will retail for $ 1449, while the Mavic 2 Zoom will retail for $ 1249. Both models are available today from DJI.

Yongnuo releases 50mm F1.4 for Nikon F-mount

Lens and camera accessory manufacturer Yongnuo has announced the availability of the new YN 50mm F1.4N E II lens for Nikon F-mount cameras. This announcement comes roughly three months after Yongnuo released the same lens for Canon EF-mount cameras.

As is to be expected, the YN 50mm F1.4N E II lens for Nikon F-mount is identical to its Canon equivalent in every way aside from the metal lens mount. It features an electromagnetic aperture with full shooting mode support, a 7-blade aperture diaphragm and a built-in USB port for on-the-fly firmware updating.

The nine optical elements in seven groups feature a multi-layer coating for reducing glare and ghosting while simultaneously letting in more light. The front filter is 58mm in diameter and the lens weighs 577g/20.35oz.
