Canon has announced the Compact-Servo 70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S, a lens designed for small-scale filmmakers. Targeted at a similar ’emerging production’ market to Fujifilm’s recently announced MK-series cine lenses, it will offer a middle ground between the company’s photographic lenses and its high-end CN-E cinema lenses.

Unlike traditional cinema lenses it offers autofocus, auto iris and image stabilization (when used with certain Cinema EOS models), but is designed to Canon’s standards for 4K video capture. It comes with a servo unit for driving focus, iris and zoom.

The lens is scheduled for availability later in 2017; no price was given at the time of announcement.

CANON ADDS VERSATILITY TO FAMILY OF HIGH-QUALITY, AFFORDABLE COMPACT-SERVO LENSES WITH NEW 70-200mm TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS

New Lens Features 4K Optical Performance, Servo Drive Unit, Image Stabilization, Autofocus and Auto Iris Functions*, Ideal for ENG, Documentary, and Budding Filmmakers

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 20, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce today the new COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom Lens (model name CN-E 70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S), a compact and lightweight 4K lens constructed for users that demand versatility and portability. A bridge between traditional Canon EF lenses and CN-E cinema lenses, the COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm can be ideal for filmmakers and documentary shooters who want the control and quality of cinema optics with the lightweight, compact design and features of Canon’s EF lenses.

The second in a new class of Canon lenses, the COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom Lens is a cinema-style lens that includes a servo drive unit as a standard feature. Additionally, the lens incorporates Image Stabilization, Autofocus, and Auto Iris functionality*, three extremely useful features not commonly found in cinema lenses, but are popular in EF lenses. The lens also provides high image quality that supports 4K image productions and was designed to be utilized in a variety of shooting styles including, hand-held, shoulder mounted, and tripod mounted.

“Canon prides itself on turning the ideas and thoughts from filmmakers about equipment into reality,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are very excited to expand our line of COMPACT-SERVO lenses, providing a variety of creators with an extremely versatile and affordable lens that features the outstanding build-quality and excellent optical performance that professionals have come to expect from Canon. We are excited to continue to build the COMPACT-SERVO line of lenses, and can’t wait to see what the imaging community creates.”

The new COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom Lens is a 4K lens and features autofocus and optical image stabilization (with compatible camera models*), resulting in high-resolution imagery, with the ability to assist filmmakers in capturing the shot they envisioned. Compatible with EF-mount Super 35mm large-format cameras, the lens maintains brightness across the entire focal range at T4.4 (equal to f/4.0). The lens is also compatible with both the Canon EF 1.4x III (expanded focal range of 98-280mm) and EF 2x III (expanded focal range of 140mm-400mm) external extenders, expanding the focal range of the lens for additional versatility when the shooting situation calls for it.

For added convenience, cinematographers can control many of the features of the lens in a variety of ways through the EF-mount communication, including Dual Pixel CMOS AF, push auto iris, record start and stop and remote lens control via the camera with an optional remote control, compensation for chromatic aberration** and peripheral illumination, metadata acquisition, and selection of T-number display**.

The COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom Lens features a nine-blade iris aperture diaphragm to help give footage a truly artistic and beautiful look and feel, providing the much desired “bokeh” effect in the out-of-focus areas.

The lens comes equipped with a Servo Drive Unit, which provides seamless switching between servo and manual modes, allowing videographers motorized control of focus, zoom, and iris settings. The Servo Drive Unit is compatible with broadcast style industry-standard lens controllers including Canon’s ZSD-300D zoom demand and FPD-400D focus demand. Like the Canon COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens, the ZSG-C10 accessory grip will be compatible with the new COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom lens, further enhancing ease-of-use for ENG and “run-and-gun” style shooters. The grip connects to the lens through a 20-pin cable, allowing a variety of lens functions to be controlled from the grip, including zooming via a rocker switch, one-shot AF and the starting and stopping of a recording. When the lens and grip are being used with the EOS C100 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C700 Cinema Cameras, users will also have the ability to control the zoom and iris from the camera’s grip unit.

The Canon COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Zoom Lens is scheduled to be available later in 2017***. In addition, the ZSG-C10 accessory grip is currently available for an estimated retail price of $ 499. For more information please visit usa.canon.com/compactservo

** These features will not be available on the EOS C100 Mark II camera.

Atomos introduces Ninja Inferno off-camera recorder

24 Mar

Atomos has launched the Ninja Inferno, the latest in its line of off-camera recorders for video shooters. The Ninja Inferno has almost the exact same feature set as the company’s top of the line Shogun Inferno, including 4K/60p recording, a 1500 nit display with 10-bit color, and the ability to record direct to ProRes or DNxHR formats. It also includes the company’s Atom HDR technology, which matches the Log curves from major camera manufacturers to the Ninja’s display in order to show the full Log signal on the HDR screen, meaning that cinematographers can see vibrant, true to life colors while recording in Log.

The major difference between the Ninja Inferno and its big brother, the Shogun Inferno, is that Atomos has removed a few features that, while important to shooters using high end video equipment, often go unused by DSLR or mirrorless filmmakers. These include SDI plugs, Genlock and Raw recording capability. The result is that Atomos is able to make the Ninja Inferno available at a very aggressive price point of $ 995, compared to $ 1995 for the Shogun version.

The Atomos Ninja Inferno mounted on the new Panasonic GH5. Together, these make a compelling combination for a budget filmmaker.

Of particular interest, Atomos is promoting the Ninja Inferno as the ‘ultimate accessory’ for the new Panasonic GH5, and there’s a reasonable case to be made for this. It’s a good match for the GH5’s 10-bit signal and Log video, but more importantly it supports 4K/60p 4:2:2 recording, one of the GH5’s more prominent features. Also, since the GH5 doesn’t include SDI ports or shoot Raw video, users are unlikely to miss those features on the Ninja Inferno, while benefiting from the much lower price.

We’ve had a pre-production copy of the Ninja Inferno for a few days and have been giving it a workout, so stay tuned for our hands-on report.

Press Release:

HDR 4Kp60 Ninja Inferno Shipping now in conjunction with GH5 for $ 995

Prices slashed across the 4K HDR line up

Melbourne, Australia – 23rd March 2017: Today, Atomos brings the power of 4Kp60 10-bit ProRes recording and HDR monitoring to the GH5 for an amazingly low price of just $ 995.

“Our message to video Pro’s is to Go HDR 4Kp60 Today showcased by the GH5 and Ninja Inferno combo”, said Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos. “For less than $ 3k it’s an unbeatable total package especially when considering having 4K HDR content ready for clients, Netflix and YouTube is a must”.

Atomos has always led the way advancing the quality, affordability and simplicity of filmmaking by adding professional features to popular Japanese cameras. Atomos are again first to launch a portable HDR 4Kp60 10-bit 422 monitor recorder. Timed with the release of the powerful Panasonic GH5 and a $ 995 price point Ninja Inferno empowers the masses.

Just as the original Atomos Ninja broke open DSLR filmmaking by giving the Canon 5DMKIII professional Apple ProRes recording & the original Atomos Shogun pioneered 4K with the Sony a7s and Panasonic GH4, the Ninja Inferno now arms the Panasonic GH5, the hottest camera of 2017, with HDR Apple Pro-Res 10-bit 4:2:2 4Kp60 over HDMI 2.0 – a feat not possible internally on the GH5. This marks another incredible Atomos breakthrough – professional 10-bit color resolution, 4:2:2 color accuracy, high frame rate 4K 60p video resolution & all with the incredible brightness range that HDR delivers in PQ or HLG.

Apart from being an obvious companion for the new GH5, the Ninja Inferno is the world’s first HDMI monitor-recorder to accept 4K DCI signals from cameras like the Panasonic GH4 / DVX200 / HCX1000 / UX180 / HCX1, Sony FS7 / Z100 and the JVC LS300. Support for the 4096 DCI standard unlocks cinema recording from these 4K video & mirrorless DSLRs.

For the Ninja Inferno, like its flagship sibling the Shogun Inferno, we have created the ultimate monitor through end-to-end custom engineering of all components. It starts with a 1920×1200 resolution LCD panel and add 10-bit processing in highlights and equivalent 10+ bit resolution in blacks. This is achieved through the patented AtomHDR engine which when combined with our custom Atomos-built backlight allows the power of 1500nits to be utilized for High Bright Rec709 or HDR PQ/HLG at 10+ stops. The full-size HDMI 2.0 connection bypasses the camera’s internal limitations by recording to 4Kp60 4:2:2 10-bit pristine video in grading-friendly Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR. The Ninja Inferno upgrades mirrorless and DSLR camera audio by including balanced XLR input and 48V Phantom Power, negating the need to purchase separate audio recorders. For on set review, the wide angle 7” calibrated screen, playback controls, playlist and XML tagging make the Ninja Inferno the perfect client or director’s monitor, with playout to the latest HDR PQ/HLG or SDR TV’s. The Ninja Inferno is equally adept in the editing suite as it is in the field with the recorded files dropping directly onto the timeline of all the major NLE editing and grading software with the HDMI input capable of accepting HDR signals to make the Ninja Inferno an unbelievably affordable HDR reference monitor for portable or in studio color grading.

The Ninja Inferno, which is shipping now for MSRP $ 995, is the ultimate camera accessory for the GH5, the popular Sony FS7 or cameras with 4K DCI output & other 4Kp60 / 4Kp30 / HDp60 cameras looking for a future proof monitor-recorder.

HDR now comes free across the Atomos 4K Line-up

Timed with the release of the Ninja Inferno, Atomos have driven down the price of the existing line-up, passing on the volume savings they receive due to the popularity of the entire HDR range. The Shogun Flame and Ninja Flame are now $ 995 and $ 795 respectively (both models ship with mains power supply, recording caddy & travel case. The Shogun Flame also ships with an XLR breakout cable). To complement all models in the line-up, Atomos have developed a tailored Accessory Kit and Power Kit that arm users with everything needed to power, control, dock, charge and safely carry the units at an amazing price. The flagship Shogun Inferno continues to ship as is today.

Product New Price (MSRP ex tax)
Shogun Flame $ 995 ($ 1695 saving of $ 700)
Ninja Inferno $ 995
Ninja Flame $ 795 ($ 1295 saving of $ 500)
Accessory Kit $ 295
Power Kit $ 149

NanGuang introduces flexible LED lighting mats

16 Mar

Chinese lighting manufacturer NanGuang has launched a new kit that consists of a pair of flexible LED light panels designed for studio or on-location still and video work. The two panels are effectively 30x60cm rubber mats with 288 embedded bi-color LEDs each, which can be adjusted to produce color temperatures anywhere between daylight and tungsten – 5600 to 3200K.

The mats can be bent to surround a still life subject or for a head shot to produce a wrap-around lighting effect, but they can also be mounted into supplied frames to behave like standard rigid panels. Diffuser sheets are supplied to soften the light and the panel brightness can be varied via a dimmer switch up to 3424lm when they are measured together. Panels can be powered by the supplied AC adapter or by an optional Sony V-mount or NP-F type battery. The company says the lights have a life of 50,000 hours and a CRI of 95.

The kit, including two stands, two panels a case and accessories, costs £679.98/$ 650. For more information about NanGuang you can visit the company website, but for information about the Flexible LED Light Panel Kit CNST288CX2 visit UK distributor Kenro.

BEND THE RULES WITH NANGUANG’S NEW FLEXIBLE LED LIGHTING KIT FROM KENRO

Kenro Ltd, the specialist photo & video distributor for the UK and Ireland, has introduced an amazing new flexible lighting kit quite unlike any photo / video lighting system you’ve seen before.

NanGuang’s new Flexible LED Light Panel Kit (CNST288CX2) includes a set of two 30 x 60cm LED light panels that can be bent and shaped around the subject to offer unique lighting effects.

Also, should conventional flat panel lighting be required, they easily attach to a choice of two frames – a square one measuring 60 x 60cm, and a rectangular one measuring 30 x 120cm. This makes for a very adaptable, lightweight and portable lighting system that can be operated via 240V AC mains or Sony V-mount and NP-F batteries. Each frame has a matching fabric diffusor for extra soft lighting.

Each of the panels is 2mm thick, water and frost resistant, and contains 288 bi-colour LEDs (CRI 95) with stepless colour adjustment from 3200-5600K.

When used off the frames, the lightweight panels can be bent and shaped as desired, making them ideal for location photography, either indoors or out in a variety of environmental conditions.

Per panel, power is 28.2 Watts, with stepless dimmer adjustment, illumination 3424 LM. Average LED life: 50,000 hours. CRI 95.

The kit consists of two LED light panels, controllers and frames, as well as a lighting stand, square and rectangular diffusers, and a sturdy carry case. SRP is £679.98 including VAT.

Irix introduces super wide-angle 11mm for full-frame DSLRs

21 Feb

New optics manufacturer Irix has announced a second extreme wide-angle lens for full-frame DSLR users that will join the existing 15mm F2.4. The new lens is a manual focus 11mm F4 which will come in two versions – Blackstone and Firefly – like the company’s first lens.

Constructed using 16 elements arranged in 10 groups the lens offers a nine-bladed iris with apertures from F4 to F22. Electrical contacts allow users to control aperture values from the camera body and for aperture values to be recorded in EXIF data.

Irix says this new 126° lens is unique because it exhibits only 3.13% curvilinear distortion on a full-frame sensor and shows test images to back up the claim, along with MTF charts that describe the expected resolution.

Available in mounts for Canon, Nikon and Pentax the lens is weather-sealed and comes in rugged or lightweight versions. The Firefly model is 12% lighter than the Blackstone, but the Blackstone is made from aluminum-magnesium alloy, features a metal-grooved focusing ring and has an anti-scratch coating. Those working in low light conditions might be glad of the Blackstone’s engaged markings that glow in the dark. As the forward element of both versions is so large, and the angle of view so extreme, the company has integrated a filter slot at the back of the lens for 30x30mm gelatin filters.

There is no indication yet when the lens will begin shipping but it is listed for sale on the company’s US website, with the Blackstone version costing $ 825 and the Firefly $ 595.
For more information see the Irix website.

Manfrotto introduces Xume magnetic holder system to make switching filters easier

08 Feb

Accessory manufacturer Manfrotto has launched a new filter suite that features a magnetic adapter and filter holders that it says make fitting and removing filters quicker and easier. The new Xume system uses a magnetic adapter ring that screws into the front of the lens, while the filter itself screws into a metal filter holder. The two parts then connect securely when they are held close together and can be separated just by pulling them apart. The system removes the part of the attaching-a-filter process where the filter is screwed onto the front of the lens.

The filter holders and lens adapters are available now in eight sizes: 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm; 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 82mm and are priced from $ 10.99 to $ 34.99.

For more information see the Manfrotto website.

Manfrotto, a leading global innovator and manufacturer of premium photo, video and lighting support products and accessories, has launched a new, groundbreaking Manfrotto Lens Filter Suite, a combination of Manfrotto’s successful high-quality lens filters and innovative Manfrotto XUME magnetic adapters.

The new Manfrotto Lens Filter Suite enables professional and amateur photographers and videographers to avoid the hassle and frustration of changing filters while subjects wander or light slips away. With the Manfrotto Filter Suite, photographers instantly and precisely connect the filter to their lens so that they never miss the perfect shot.

The Manfrotto Lens Filter Suite is comprised of a Manfrotto Lens Filter, a Manfrotto XUME Lens Adapter and Filter Holder plus an optional Cap (available only for 77mm diameter). It is the perfect choice for long exposures, wedding photography, macro, architectural photography, fine art photography – any style requiring the use of filters.

Manfrotto’s camera lens filters are built to the highest quality standards. They feature flawless multi-coating which minimizes reflection and maximizes light transmission, consistently delivering the effects photographers wish to achieve. Each filter is provided with a practical, reusable storage case, ensuring the highest level of protection off-camera. Depending on the model, Manfrotto filters feature reliable water-repellent, oil-repellent and anti-static characteristics.

  • UV filters block out UV light, preventing it from entering the lens, reducing blurring, haziness and blue casting.
  • Circular Polarizer filters enhance color, contrast and saturation as well as removing undesirable reflections from non-metallic surfaces.
  • Neutral Density filters help control exposure times by reducing the amount of light hitting the camera sensor without altering the color of the scene.
  • Protect filters provide maximum protection against scratches, oil and moisture, without affecting overall image quality.

Manfrotto XUME Adapters are the revolutionary magnetic solution which securely locks filters onto lenses, quickly and easily. Photography gear stays safe in-use with the filter magnetically secured to the lens. Manfrotto XUME accessories are safe for the lens’ focus mechanism, media cards, drives or other electronics.

Unique to the market, Manfrotto’s XUME Adapters:

  • Install in an instant.
  • Are secure; no moving parts and completely safe to use.
  • Have very low profile rings and are completely unobtrusive.

Manfrotto XUME Filter Holders and Manfrotto XUME Lens Adapters are now available nationwide in eight sizes: 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm; 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 82mm. The Manfrotto XUME CAP is available only for the 77mm size. Manfrotto Filters range in price from $ 19.99 to $ 134.99 and Manfrotto Xume Adapters range in price from $ 10.99 to $ 34.99.

The Manfrotto Lens Filter Suite will be on display at WPPI in Las Vegas, Feb. 7–9, at the Manfrotto Distribution booth, No. 349.

02 Feb

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_9533390039″,”galleryId”:”9533390039″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Camera store Adorama has announced that it is to introduce a new line of monoblock studio heads that are designed to work directly with Canon’s RT radio TTL flash system. The company claims that the Orlit Rovelight RT 610 TTL Wireless Monolight, with its RT system built-in, is the first of its kind. The head can also be used with all Canon and Nikon DSLRs using the Orlit TR-611C and TR-612N TTL Transceivers that have been launched alongside the head. These transceivers allow TTL control of the head even with Nikon cameras.

The Orilt Rovelight RT 610 TTL is a 600Ws head with a guide number of 201ft/61m @ ISO 100 that features modes for Canon’s ETTL and Nikon’s iTTL metering systems. It is powered by a rechargeable 6000mAh lithium ion battery pack that Adorama claims is good for 450 full-power flashes per charge. The longest recycle time will be 2.5 seconds at full power, but the head offers output settings down to 1/256th in 1/3EV steps across the nine-stop range. There is said to be a variance of only 150 K across the output range from the standard color temperature of 5500 K, and a high speed sync mode allows for shutter speeds of up to 1/8000sec. The modeling bulb is a 20W LED that has a 3200 K tungsten color balance and three brightness levels.

The head accepts Bowens S-type modifiers and has an integrated umbrella shaft slot. The flash control system can be divided into five groups, while 16 channels are provided to avoid interference with other systems in the vicinity.

The new studio head can also be controlled by or work alongside the company’s Orlit RT-600C TTL Speedlite. This new flash unit can sit in the camera’s hotshoe to act as a master or it can join a group of other RT flashes as a slave. The unit has a guide number of 160ft/48m @ ISO 100.

The new studio head, flash unit and transceivers will ship later this month but can be ordered now on the Adorama website.

  • Orlit Rovelight RT 610 TTL Wireless Monolight – $ 699.95
  • Orlit RT-600C TTL Speedlite – $ 169.95
  • Orlit TR-611C Transceiver – $ 69.95
  • TR-612N TTL Transceiver – $ 69.95
