hähnel introduces Modus 600RT flash for Micro Four Thirds

Battery and accessory brand hähnel has extended its range of radio-triggered Modus 600RT flash units with a model for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The unit can be used directly in the hotshoe as a standalone flash, or will work within a group of flashes as a TTL commander or a slave using radio or optical communication.

The company already makes this model speedlight for Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon and Sony systems, and is adding Olympus and Panasonic cameras with this new model.

Although the Modus 600RT shares its basic design with the Godox TT685 flash, and much of its specification with the Godox V860II, hähnel claims its flash has significant advantages that account for the difference in price. A spokesperson told DPReview that the build quality of the 600RT is improved, and that hähnel is especially proud of its firmware updates and customer service—both before and after purchase.

The Modus flashes also feature Digital Channel Matching that locks the transmitter and receiver together once they are connected, to reduce the possibility of interference. Another major difference, according to hähnel, is the quality of the supplied lithium-ion block battery, which is injected with silicone to insulate the circuits and to provide improved shock absorption. The company says these hähnel Extreme li-ion batteries have a longer life and retain their charge for longer than competitors’ equivalents.

The Modus 600RT has a guide number of 60m/197ft at ISO 100, and can produce 600 full-power bursts per charge with only a 1.5-second delay for recycling.

With a transmitter and receiver built-in, the flashes work as both commanders and slaves in groups of other hähnel Captur-compatible guns as well as in combination with manufacturers’ original and third party units. A Viper TTL radio controller can be used from the hotshoe to control single guns or up to three groups of guns at a range of 100m/330ft, and can operate in full TTL, manual or strobotic modes with DCM. The zoom head offers coverage for 20-200mm lenses and high speed synch mode allows use with shutter speeds as short as 1/8000sec.

Meike introduces full-frame Sony edition of its 50mm F1.7 lens

Chinese lens manufacturer Meike has added a new version of its existing 50mm F1.7 lens to its range, but this time for full-frame Sony users. The existing model, introduced in February, was aimed at users of mirrorless cameras systems and comes in APS-C and MFT mounts. The newly released version features a wider covering circle meant for larger sensors – at the moment those in Sony E-Mount cameras.

As before, this new model is manual focus only and has a minimum focus distance of 50cm. It uses 6 elements in 5 groups and has a filter thread that measures 52mm. Meike says it weighs 310g, measures 61×54.5mm, and that it uses a metal mount and barrel. Although the spec sheet doesn’t mention the number of blades in the iris, the product shots show 12 edges on the aperture—the same as in the existing model.

The lens is listed on Amazon USA for $ 130, and for €131.50 in some parts of Europe. It is listed as unavailable in the UK and no price is given. For more information, visit the Meike website.

Apple introduces new ProRes RAW video format with Final Cut Pro X update

In a surprise update ahead of NAB, Apple has introduced a brand new video format called ProRes RAW. The format was introduced alongside an update to Final Cut Pro X, which also added advanced closed captioning tools for professional filmmakers.

The captioning tools are neat—they allow video editors to more easily create, view, edit, and deliver captions, with support for both the CEA-608 and iTT formats—but this feature will no doubt be overshadowed by the much bigger news: the introduction of ProRes RAW.

As the name suggests, ProRes RAW is an evolution of the Apple ProRes video codec. Apple claims that ProRes RAW “combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the stunning performance of ProRes.” By pulling RAW data from the sensor, video editors will have a lot more dynamic range flexibility—important as more and more displays, including Apple’s own iPhone X, become capable of displaying true HDR—all while taking advantage of the space and performance benefits of a compressed ProRes file.

In fact, Apple claims that ProRes RAW files take up less space than ProRes 4444. And since it’s Apple’s format, it has been performance optimized for macOS so that you can play full-quality 4K ProRes RAW files on your current MacBook Pro or iMac in real time without rendering.

The format drops today, and already Apple has made inroads into the professional community with Atomos and DJI. ProRes RAW compatibility will be made available as a free update for Atomos Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 users, and as “a free update for users with the RAW activation package” for the DJI Inspire 2 Drone and Zenmuse X7 camera.

Once updated, Final Cut Pro users will be able to work natively with ProRes RAW and the ProRes RAW HQ files created by the two Atomos external recorders mentioned above.

Final Cut Pro X update introduces ProRes RAW and advanced closed captioning

Apple is introducing a new update to Final Cut Pro X, the most popular version of its professional video editing software, with more than 2.5 million seats. Final Cut Pro 10.4.1 introduces a groundbreaking format from Apple, ProRes RAW, which combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the performance of ProRes. The update also adds advanced closed captioning tools that allow video editors to easily view, edit and deliver captions from right within the app. Apple is also adding complementary new features to Final Cut Pro companion apps, Motion and Compressor.

ProRes RAW

ProRes RAW is a new format from Apple that offers the quality and workflow advantages of RAW with the stunning performance of ProRes. With ProRes RAW, editors can import, edit and grade pristine footage with RAW data from the camera sensor, providing ultimate flexibility when adjusting highlights and shadows — ideal for HDR workflows. And with performance optimized for macOS, editors can play full-quality 4K ProRes RAW files on MacBook Pro and iMac systems in real time without rendering. ProRes RAW files are even smaller than ProRes 4444 files, allowing editors to make better use of storage while providing an excellent format for archiving.

Final Cut Pro editors can work natively with ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ files created by Atomos recorders. The format will be available as a free update for owners of Atomos Sumo 19 and Shogun Inferno devices. The format will also be available as part of a forthcoming upgrade package to users of the DJI Inspire 2 drone and Zenmuse X7 Super 35mm camera system designed for aerial cinematography.

Closed Captioning Tools

As closed captioning becomes increasingly important around the world, Final Cut Pro now includes powerful closed captioning tools for professional filmmakers, YouTubers and students looking to add captions to their projects without the need for expensive third-party software or services. Users can import closed caption files directly into their project or create them from scratch. Captions appear in the viewer during playback and can be attached to video or audio clips in the timeline, so they automatically move with the clips to which they’re connected. An all-new captions inspector makes it simple to adjust caption text, color, alignment, location and more. Users can even create captions in multiple languages within the same timeline and easily share captioned videos to YouTube and Vimeo. And in the share window, a new Roles tab displays titles, video and audio roles in a single consolidated interface, making it easy to configure roles and closed captions when sharing.

Motion 5.4.1 and ProRes RAW enable motion graphics artists to take full advantage of RAW image quality with superb performance and flexibility when designing graphics and effects. Compressor 4.4.1 gains support for closed captioning with comprehensive controls to view, adjust and deliver captions as part of a batch or iTunes Store package.

Gearing up for CP+ 2018, Sigma has announced two all-new lenses including the 70mm F2.8 DG Macro. It’s the first macro lens in the Art-series line, offering true 1:1 reproduction and a dust- and splash-proof design. Full-time manual focus is available even in autofocus shooting, and focus ring’s angle of rotation is tuned to the needs of macro shooting. Lensbaby introduces Burnside 35 with variable vignetting

Lensbaby has announced the Burnside 35, which it calls an adaptation of the Petzval lens design with the added benefit of an effect slider to adjust the strength of vignetting and bokeh. The gold-anodized slider is located on the side of the lens barrel and operates a second iris, adding more or less vignette effect and adjusting the appearance of bokeh.

The manual focus lens is designed for full-frame and crop-sensor cameras and will be offered in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A, Pentax K, Micro Four Thirds, Sony E, Fujifilm X and Samsung NX mount. It’s on sale now for $ 500.

Arri introduces Alexa LF ‘large-format’ 4K camera and LPL mount

Cinema camera manufacturer Arri has launched a completely new, ‘large format’ 4K system comprising a camera with a new lens mount and 16 new lenses to go with it. The Alexa LF camera uses a sensor fractionally larger than what stills shooters would consider ‘full frame’ and can record in resolutions up to 4.5K and at frame rates of 150 fps.

Arri introduced the new system today at London’s BSC Expo, and claims the new system is smaller and lighter than current full frame models. The camera’s sensor measures 36.70 x 25.54mm and uses 4448 x 3096 pixels – all of which users will be able to utilize in open gate mode. When used in 16:9 mode a 31.68 x 17.82 mm area is exposed with a full 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is a 36.3mm diagonal, so is fully compatible with lenses such as Zeiss’s Compact Prime and Cinema Zoom series of lenses.

A 2.39:1 ratio mode uses 4448 x 1865 pixels and a 39.8mm diagonal.

In all of these modes the camera can shoot at up to 90fps in Arriraw, but it can manage 150fps when used in 2.39:1. Arri says the sensor has an exposure latitude of ‘14+ stops’. Newsshooter is reporting that the sensor is essentially two of its existing, 8-year-old ALEV-III sensors stitched together.

Large PL mount

A new lens mount has been introduced with the system that uses a wider throat and a shallower flange so that lenses can be made with large maximum apertures that would not be possible with the narrow throat of the PL mount. It should also allow lenses to be slightly smaller and lighter. The LPL (‘Large PL’) mount is 62mm in diameter and has a depth of 44mm, so existing PL lenses can also be mounted via an adapter. Arri says it is making the LPL available under licence to other camera manufacturers and third party lens makers.

Its own collection of Arri Signature Prime lens system will comprise 16 lenses of between 12mm and 280mm. All will have a maximum aperture of T1.8 and will be compatible with the new LDS-2 lens data protocol, which Arri says it will also license. The mount will be able to read data from LDS-1 and /i lenses.

According to the Cinema 5d website pricing will start at €76,608.37 plus tax, adding ‘if you think it’s expensive, it’s probably not aimed at you…’

ARRI launches large-format camera system

The ALEXA LF camera, ARRI Signature Prime lenses and LPL lens mount together comprise an entirely new system, offering an immersive, emotionally engaging look.

At the 2018 BSC Expo in London, ARRI has unveiled a complete large-format system that meets and exceeds modern production requirements, delivering unprecedented creative freedom while also being backwards compatible with existing lenses, accessories and workflows.

Featuring a large-format sensor slightly bigger than full frame, ALEXA LF records native 4K with ARRI’s best overall image quality. Filmmakers can explore a large-format aesthetic while retaining the ALEXA sensor’s natural colorimetry, pleasing skin tones and proven suitability for HDR and WCG workflows. Different sensor modes cover any deliverable requirement and versatile recording formats-including efficient ProRes and uncompressed, unencrypted ARRIRAW up to 150 fps-provide total flexibility.

Accompanying the ALEXA LF camera are 16 large-format ARRI Signature Prime lenses, ranging from 12 mm to 280 mm and fitted with the new ARRI LPL mount. While the Signature Primes exemplify state-of-the-art optical precision, they render organic, emotional images, gently softening and texturizing the large format. A fast T-stop of T1.8 facilitates shallow depth of field and the smooth focus fall-off gives subjects heightened presence in the frame.

In the lead-up to the release of its new large-format system, ARRI asked a number of cinematographers to shoot with the camera and lenses in real-world situations. Among them was Dan Laustsen ASC, DFF, who is Oscar-nominated this year for his work on THE SHAPE OF WATER. After shooting with the system, Laustsen commented, “We were trying to tell a story about wideness and freedom; the ALEXA LF worked really well. The depth of field is so small, creating its own world. It’s fantastic.” Of the Signature Primes, he noted: “The lenses are lightweight and are not too sharp, but with a certain softness and very specific. With the 25 mm lens, you feel like you are there in the scene with the actors.”

The new LPL lens mount has a wider diameter and shorter flange focal depth, allowing the ARRI Signature Primes and all future large-format lenses to be small and lightweight, with a fast T-stop and pleasing bokeh-a combination of features that would not be possible with the PL lens mount. The LPL mount will also be available for other ARRI cameras and is being licensed to third-party lens and camera manufacturers.

Another cinematographer to shoot with the system prior to its release was Wang Yu, who used it to explore the atmospheric studio and creative inspirations of the celebrated Chinese artist and furniture-maker, Shao Fan. “The results got me really excited,” he says. “The camera and lens captured every tonal nuance with unmatched detail, gradation and color. I love how the out-of-focus areas are rendered, contributing to a rich and vivid overall look.”

Although the camera, lens mount and lenses are new, full compatibility with existing PL mount lenses and ALEXA accessories is a cornerstone of the system’s design. A PL-to-LPL adapter offers backwards compatibility with all PL mount lenses, whether Super 35 or full frame. The adapter attaches securely to the LPL lens mount without tools, allowing crews to rapidly switch between PL and LPL lenses on set, and offering cinematographers an unlimited lens choice.

Tom Fährmann BVK, who also got a sneak preview, chose to shoot a diverse palette of faces and skin tones against a white background, under varying portrait lighting conditions. ALEXA LF offers the same tried-and-true, versatile workflows as other ALEXA cameras. Existing ARRI Look Files can be used, and the entire range of ARRI workflow software tools will support ALEXA large-format images. Lens metadata can be recorded from LDS-1, LDS-2 or /i capable lenses.

Shooting wide open with ARRI Signature Prime lenses for shallow focus and gorgeous bokeh, French cinematographer Matias Boucard worked purely with natural light and available sources when he tried out the new system in Thailand. “The ALEXA LF camera and Signature Prime lenses are an elegant combination,” he says. “I love the lenses; they strike a wonderful balance between modernity and character.”

Fujifilm introduces XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 lens, its first X-series power zoom

Fujifilm has announced its first power zoom lens for X-series cameras: the XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ. This compact, stabilized lens is equivalent to 23-69mm on Fuji’s X-series cameras, such as the new X-A5 with which it will be kitted. It has a minimum focus distance of 5 cm, a length of 44mm (1.7″) when fully collapsed and a weight of just 136 g (4.8 oz).

The XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ comes in silver and black and will ship in early February for $ 299.

Fujifilm introduces budget-friendly and rugged FinePix XP130

Fujifilm has introduced the FinePix XP130, its latest inexpensive rugged camera. The XP130 is largely the same as the XP120 that came before it, with the addition of Bluetooth, Eye AF and an electronic level being the major changes.

The XP130 has a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 28-140mm equiv. F3.9-4.9 stabilized lens, 3″ LCD and 1080/60p video capture. Bluetooth makes pairing camera and smartphone easier and also allows for instant photo transfer. The XP130 has 96MB of built-in memory plus an SD card slot and a battery that will last for around 240 shots.

You’ll have five colors of XP130 to choose from: black, blue, green, yellow and white. It will ship in March for $ 229.95.

DJI introduces Ronin-S stabilizer for DSLR and mirrorless cameras

DJI has announced the Ronin-S, its first single-handed stabilizer designed for use with DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

It will be available in two frame sizes (referring to the frame that holds the camera), one for mirrorless cameras such as the Sony Alpha system and Panasonic GH series, and another for larger DSLRs like the Canon 5D Mark IV. Additionally, the 3-axis gimbal is fully compatible with both in-camera and in-lens stabilization systems.

DJI tells us that it put a lot of work into making the system easy to use. It comes with a tripod that screws into the base, allowing the Ronin to stand upright on its own while rigging the camera, axis locks to prevent gimbal movement during setup, and a calibration process that it describes as quick and easy. Also included is a feature called Push Mode, activated in the Ronin app, that allows users to tune settings like pan and tilt while the Ronin-S is still turned on, eliminating the need to shut down the system to make these adjustments.

The Ronin app also provides a number of features designed to automate complex camera moves. These include CamAnchor, which allows you to set designated camera positions and toggle between them, Panorama and Hyperlapse tools, and also DJI’s ActiveTrack technology. SmoothTrack enables you to adjust gimbal responsiveness on each axis, along with the ability to save profiles for later use.

The Ronin app also provides a number of features designed to automate
complex camera moves

The Ronin-S includes dedicated control buttons for both camera and gimbal, including the ability to quickly toggle between settings, activate recording on the camera, and adjust camera position using the built-in joystick.

The Ronin-S is also compatible with some very useful accessories, including a focus dial with built-in screen that can be used as a follow-focus (primarily on Sony cameras, we’re told) or used to select SmoothTrack profiles saved in the Ronin app. There’s also a cheese plate for attaching other accessories and a car mount for shooting on vehicles.

Over the past couple years we’ve seen quite a few products designed for the growing market of small production companies and emerging filmmakers, including more cameras with advanced features like Log video, as well as a number of budget-oriented cinema lenses. A compact, affordable stabilization system should be very appealing to this audience.

Pricing for the Ronin-S has yet to be announced, but DJI indicated it will be available in the second quarter of 2018. If you’re attending CES 2018 in Las Vegas you can see the Ronin-S in person at the DJI booth.

Ronin-S is DJI’s first single-handed stabilizer for DSLR and mirrorless camera systems. Available in two frame sizes for either camera type, DJI’s powerful three-axis gimbal technology delivers smooth, shake-free video and crisp photos, adding a cinematic and professional look to your work.

Powerful high-torque motors support the most popular camera and lens combinations including the Canon 5D, Panasonic GH and Sony Alpha systems. Its stabilization system compensates for zoom lenses with higher magnification ratios and an external zooming barrel, while its advanced stabilization algorithms work with both in-camera and in-lens optical stabilization technology.

Capturing stabilized video has never been easier because Ronin-S was designed for easy setup and use. A new Push mode lets you adjust the pan and tilt axis by hand while the Ronin-S is powered on and axis locks speed up the setup process so you can spend more time filming and less time prepping your gear. Ronin-S has a comfortable, ergonomic curved design that helps capture smooth cinematic movements from upright to underslung positions without obstructing the camera’s display. Dedicated control buttons for the camera and gimbal let you toggle between SmoothTrack settings, record and stop the camera, and the high-precision joystick changes the camera position to help frame your shot perfectly. A new Sport mode allows for fast movements with tight and quick subject following speed.

Harness intelligent shooting modes on Ronin-S through the DJI Ronin mobile app to create complex camera moves automatically like Panorama, Hyperlapse, Track and CamAnchor that lets you designate specific camera positions in a scene and rotate between them on demand. Directly customize SmoothTrack settings with dedicated controls for responsiveness of each axis. Camera settings can be directly adjusted as well.**

Ronin-S is compatible with a variety of DJI Pro Accessories to capture any scene and expand your creative freedom on set or location. Supported accessories include a Focus Control Center consisting of a focusing dial and a screen allowing advanced gimbal and focus control without a mobile device, a vehicle mount solution, DJI Master Force, DJI Master Wheels, an external focus motor, and a cheese plate adapter so you can use your favorite third-party accessories. A dual-handle support will also be available for when an added level of comfort and stability is required.

Sony introduces E-mount 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens for APS-C bodies

Sony has introduced an optically stabilized 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 zoom lens that is ‘an ideal fit’ for its a6000 series of mirrorless cameras. The lens, equivalent to 27-202.5mm on APS-C bodies, features 2 ED and 1 aspherical elements, a minimum focus distance of 45cm and a weight of just 325 g.

The 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS will be available in February for $ 599/£570. We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this lens kitted with the a6300 and a6500 at some point in the future.

Sony, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, today announced its 46th E-mount lens. This new APS-C lens features a versatile 18-135mm focal length, aperture range of F3.5-F5.6 And Optical SteadyShot™ stabilisation.

The new lens (model SEL18135) features a compact, lightweight design measuring only 67.2mm x 88mm and weighing in at a mere 325g, as well as a high magnification 7.5x optical zoom that covers the wide-ranging focal length of 18-135mm on APS-C or 27-202.5mm in 35mm equivalent focal length. The lens is an ideal fit for Sony’s popular APS-C sensor cameras including ?6500, ?6300 and ?6000, and is an extremely useful tool for a wide range of shooting situations ranging from daily life to portraiture, landscape, nature and travel photography.

The E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS produces outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness throughout the entire zoom range thanks to its advanced design featuring one aspherical lens and two Extra-low Dispersion glass elements that minimise aberrations. This lens also allows photographers to produce close-up images with pleasing ‘bokeh’ or background defocus as a result of its maximum magnification ratio of 0.29x and minimum focus distance of 0.45m. It also offers built-in optical image stabilisation to support handheld shooting.

Additionally, the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 Zoom lens offers fast, precise, quiet AF performance thanks to a linear motor, making it a perfect complement to the high speed shooting and impressive video capabilities of many of Sony’s mirrorless cameras.
