Novoflex introduces electronic lens reversing system for Sony E-Mount

02 Nov

German accessories manufacturer Novoflex has launched a version of its Retro Reverse Adapters for the Sony E-mount system. The adapter allows users to reverse-mount lenses for macro shooting while maintaining full electronic control of the lens via the body controls.

The system works by using a pair of cable-connected rings that communicate information from the camera to the rear of the lens, even when it is mounted away from the body.

Reversing a lens is a quick way of achieving macro and close-up abilities, but Sony E-mount lenses need to be connected to the camera to operate at apertures other than the widest. This adapter, which has been available for Canon EOS users for some years, allows the lens to be mounted in reverse with no loss of control or EXIF information.

The adapter also allows a bellows unit to be fitted between the camera and any Sony E lens, reversed or not, for extra-high magnification work while still maintaining contact between lens and body.

The Novoflex NEX-RETRO will retail for $ 440/£309/€350. For more information, visit the Novoflex website.

Press Release

Sony Users Now GO RETRO with NOVOFLEX!

New NEX-RETRO from NOVOFLEX

Allows users with Sony E-Mount cameras (e.g. Sony Alpha 7/Alpha 9 series, Alpha 6000 series, etc.) to reverse mount their existing lenses to achieve closer focus. NEX-RETRO transfers all electronic functions such as aperture control, EXIF data and autofocus, from the reversed lens to the camera body as if it were mounted directly.

Look More Closely

With a 18-105 mm zoom lens in reverse position, you get an image ratio of 1:7 at 105 mm and 2.8:1 at 28 mm expanding the versatility of your zoom lens exponentially. The adapter itself has a 58mm filter thread. Stepping rings are available for other filter sizes.

The Common Thread

In addition to reversing the lens on the camera, NEX-RETRO allows the Sony E-Mount system user to incorporate NOVOFLEX bellows systems for even closer focus and greater magnification ratios.

Highlights

  • Bring to life the finest details: NEX-RETRO allows reverse mounting of Sony E-mount lenses for close focus macro applications.
  • No compromise in flexibility: NEX-RETRO retains complete electronic functionality between Sony E-mount lenses and bodies.
  • Precision engineering: NEX-RETRO is the perfect tool to make the perfect picture even better.

Billingham introduces the tiny ‘72’ for premium compacts and small mirrorless kits

07 Oct

Premium British bag manufacturer Billingham has launched a new small shoulder bag called the Billingham 72, aimed at users of fixed lens premium cameras and those with small mirrorless bodies. The Billingham 72 features a new padding design that puts a double layer of high-density foam all around the body of the bag in a continuous form that leaves no spaces between the sides and the base.

Traditional Billingham canvas or FibreNyte finishes are available, both of which are weather, water and heat resistant for the entire life of the bag. All fittings are made from leather and brass, and a quick release catch allows easy access to the cover whether the bag is over the shoulder or attached to your belt.

The bag is available in a choice of five color combinations that will go on sale in the UK tomorrow for £100. Sales in the USA are expected to begin after Christmas.

For more information visit the Billingham website.

Press Release

Small and perfectly formed. Billingham announces the ‘72’

High quality, lightweight, compact bag with dense foam padding offers outstanding protection for fixed prime lens and small system cameras

Designed for owners of fixed prime lens cameras and the growing range of small mirrorless and compact systems, Billingham has today announced the Billingham 72. The new, high quality, lightweight bag will be available to view and order for the first time at the Digital Splash 17 exhibition in Liverpool, 7-8 October.

The Billingham 72 will come in five colour combinations and will cost £100 inc. VAT:

  • Sage FibreNyte & Chocolate Leather
  • Khaki Canvas & Tan Leather
  • Burgundy Canvas & Chocolate Leather
  • Black Canvas & Tan Leather
  • Black FibreNyte & Black Leather

At 150 x 130 x 190mm (WxDxH), the Billingham 72 is the ideal size for premium fixed lens cameras such as the Leica Q, Fujifilm X100 range or Sony DSC-RX1R series, and many small mirrorless system cameras with one standard lens, such as the Fujifilm X-T2, Olympus OMD E-M series, Leica M rangefinders or Canon EOS M kits. The bag itself, with shoulder sling attached, weighs just 0.46kg.

Made in England at the Billingham factory, the 72 offers extensive protection thanks to a newly-designed arrangement of structured, highly dense foam in a continuous double layer around the whole body of the bag. This special fortified padding safeguards the entire camera and lens, keeping all edges and corners fully protected.

Heavier camera bodies with small lenses fit perfectly into the Billingham 72 interior with the grip facing upwards. A padded inner lid over the main compartment completely covers the top end of the camera, but allows the photographer quick access to their equipment when required. Ideal for travelling, or when working in large crowds, the equipment is shielded on all sides from any knocks or bumps.

With an outer body constructed of either Billingham canvas or FibreNyte, the Billingham 72 offers the ultimate in water resistance and provides full defence against inclement weather conditions. Both materials are hard-wearing yet lightweight and never require reproofing, remaining moisture- and heat-resistant for their entire life. FibreNyte is an extra-rugged material that is colour-fast, and delivers exceptional durability and protection against wear and tear.

The bag’s Quick Release System comprises a strong leather tab and brass ClogBall, enabling fast opening with one hand to retrieve the camera, while securing the equipment in transit. Each model is reinforced with the finest top-grain leather, and all fittings are made from solid brass.

For maximum versatility, the Billingham 72 comes with a comfortable, detachable shoulder sling made of extra strong, shuttle-woven spun polyester, which is long enough to be worn across the body. It also incorporates a wide belt loop for those who prefer to keep their camera a little closer.

A precisely-formed removable foam base and a vertical padded divider attached with Velcro® are included with the Billingham 72, enabling the photographer to configure the bag and adjust it to fit their individual requirements. A small pocket on the front provides storage for a spare battery, lens cap or memory cards.

As with all Billingham bags, the 72 is manufactured with extreme precision, meeting meticulous technical standards. Once it has passed Billingham’s strict quality controls, each bag is adorned with a laser-engraved woven label containing an individual 10-digit barcoded serial number as part of the company’s Unique Identifier (UI) system, allowing the bag to be registered, identified and tracked throughout its life.

Harry Billingham, director at M. Billingham & Co, said, “The idea for the Billingham 72 was conceived by our newly formed in-house design team, following extensive research into the market. They identified a need for a secure but lightweight bag to protect smaller systems or fixed lens cameras, particularly those with heavier bodies, that also gives photographers immediate access to their equipment. It makes a perfect addition to our range, providing owners of small premium cameras with a smart, reliable and robust way of protecting their valuable kit from the elements and daily wear and tear.”

The Billingham 72 comes with a 5 year manufacturer’s guarantee.

A collection of leather accessories is available for all Billingham bags, including fine leather luggage tallies and shoulder pads, to complement the colour and style of each model.
More information on the Billingham range can be found at www.billingham.co.uk.

Billingham 72 technical specifications:

  • External dimensions: 150 x 130 x 190mm (WxDxH)
  • Internal dimensions: 110 x 90 x 140mm (WxDxH)

Tamron introduces ‘ultra-telephoto’ 18-400mm F3.5-6.3 zoom lens

23 Jun

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_0293456581″,”galleryId”:”0293456581″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Tamron has introduced what it is calling the ‘world’s first ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens,’ the 18-400mm F3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD. The lens, designed for Canon and Nikon crop-sensor bodies, is equivalent to 29-640mm and 27-600mm, respectively.

Built-in Vibration Correction reduces shake by up to 2.5 stops, and the lens’ HLD focus motor promises ‘accurate and quiet’ focusing, according to Tamron. The HLD motor also keeps the overall size of the lens down: It’s 124mm/4.9in long and 79mm/3.1in in diameter. The lens has 7 circular aperture blades, a minimum subject distance of 0.45m/18in and is moisture-resistant. Nikon owners will be pleased to hear the the lens uses an electromagnetic diaphragm system.

The 18-400mm F3.5-6.3 will be available in late July for $ 649.

Press Release

INTRODUCING THE WORLD’S FIRST1 ULTRA-TELEPHOTO ALL-IN-ONE ZOOM LENS WITH AN EXTENDED RANGE THAT COVERS 18-400MM

Dramatic extended range achieved by combining cutting-edge optical design and other new breakthrough technologies including a redesigned cam structure

18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028)

June 23, 2017, Commack, NY – Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of the new 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028), the world’s first ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C DSLR cameras, which covers a focal length range of 18-400mm. Since the 1992 launch of its AF28-200mm F/3.8-5.6 Aspherical (Model 71D), Tamron has dominated the all-in-one zoom category and has produced many lenses that cover wide-angle to telephoto zoom ranges. Tamron has now developed an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom that extends to 400mm (35mm equivalent of 620mm) and a 22.2x zoom ratio. Packed in a light, compact body (4.8in./24.9oz.)2 is Tamron’s accumulated knowledge and experience for all-in-one zoom lenses, including the most advanced optical and mechanical designs, an HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) for the AF system and the Vibration Compensation system. Photographers can now enjoy wide-angle to ultra-telephoto photography using one lens, which is ideal for travel photography and eliminates the need to carry extra lenses. The new Model B028 lens enables photographing a wide variety of ultra-telephoto images including everyday casual scenes. The 18-400mm will be available in the U.S. at the end of July at $ 649.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

  1. The world’s first3 ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens to achieve 400mm telephoto

The new Model B028 is the world’s first lens for APS-C DSLR cameras that covers a focal length range of 18-400mm and achieves a zoom ratio of 22.2x. The focal length of 400mm on the telephoto end enables the capturing of ultra-telephoto pictures with the 35mm equivalent of 620mm angle of view. Now, with just this one lens, a photographer can readily enjoy the power of ultra-telephoto to bring distant subjects closer as well as the perspective-flattening effects that only extreme telephoto settings can achieve. This all-in-one zoom lens is ideal for travel and everyday shooting. It allows a photographer to switch from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto without changing lenses, making it faster and easier to capture a much wider range of subjects including travel scenes, wildlife, action sports, landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and food.

  1. Excellent image quality across the entire zoom range, from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto and macro

The optical construction of the B028 consists of 16 lens elements in 11 groups. The use of specialized glass elements such as LD (Low Dispersion) and aspherical lens elements effectively minimizes wide-ranging aberrations, including chromatic aberrations and distortion, thereby assuring outstanding image quality. Optimum power distribution among the individual lens element groups achieves both the optical performance and the compact size necessary for an ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom lens that boasts 400mm focal length. Also, it enables tele-macro photography with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9.

  1. Lightweight and compact design exhibits Tamron’s basic philosophy for all-in-one zoom lenses

Despite being an all-in-one zoom lens that achieves 400mm ultra-telephoto, Model B028 is light and compact with a total length of 4.8in. and a weight of 24.9oz.4 A new lens barrel design utilizing three-step extensions was developed to enable the necessary elongation to produce a 22.2x zoom ratio. Compared to the conventional approach, the division into a larger number of cams ensures comfortable operation and stability while zooming. Tamron’s philosophy for all-in-one zoom lenses is to allow each photographer to casually capture everyday photos with a lens of a practical size, and Model B028 fulfills this philosophy.

  1. HLD motor provides high-precision AF and enables compact lens construction

The AF drive system for Model B028 uses Tamron’s exclusive HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) motor. The power-saving HLD motor produces outstanding driving torque, and adjusts motor rotation from low to high speed to enable accurate and quiet focusing. The HLD motor takes up less space thanks to its small size and circular arc shape that allows the size of the lens to be reduced.

  1. Equipped with the Vibration Compensation system necessary for ultra-telephotography at 400mm

Despite its compact size, Model B028 is equipped with Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) system, which effectively curbs camera shake under low light conditions (such as a dimly lit room or at dusk) and while taking ultra-telephoto pictures. This greatly expands opportunities for casual handheld shooting. The jitter-free stability of the viewfinder image allows for easier framing and enables the photographer to compose the subject quickly and comfortably.

  1. Electromagnetic diaphragm system now used also for Nikon-mount lenses

The electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses5. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a motor through electronic pulse signals.

  1. User-friendly features for everyday comfortable use

With an eye toward active outdoor photography, Model B028 features Moisture-Resistant Construction to ensure worry-free shooting as well as confidence while shooting under adverse weather conditions. Also, the Zoom Lock mechanism prevents undesired movement of the lens barrel under its own weight when the camera is angled downward while walking.

  1. Compatible with TAP-in ConsoleTM, an optional accessory product

The optional TAP-in Console provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling the user to easily update the lens’s firmware as well as to customize features, including fine adjustments to the AF and VC.

  1. External design placing importance on functionality and ease of use

While inheriting the design that makes use of many organic curves and the delicately polished form down to fine details that characterize the SP lens series, the new Model B028 comes with a highly sophisticated design that also places a lot of importance on the lens’s functionality and ease of use, featuring an overall form that faithfully encompasses the internal structures within, a slim Luminous Gold brand ring and the switch shape design.

Macphun introduces Luminar Neptune with Accent AI filter

16 Jun

Software company Macphun has launched an update to its easy-to-use image editor Luminar. The most significant innovation in Luminar Neptune is a new artificial intelligence powered filter. The Accent AI Filter improves images with one simple slider instead of many adjustments and controls, such as shadows, highlights, contrast, tone, saturation and exposure.

The new filter uses artificial intelligence to analyze different areas of an image based on structure, objects, dark and light zones, colors and other parameters. As a user moves the slider across the image, the software automatically detects what areas of the image need improvements and applies them. You can also adjust the intensity of changes, generating a more natural or dramatic look, depending on the desired effect.

“Our mission to make complex photo editing tasks simple and fun led the team at our R&D Lab to explore Artificial Intelligence technology for image enhancement,” said Kevin La Rue, Vice-President at Macphun. “The Accent AI Filter emerged as a ground-breaking way to make perfect images instantly, incorporating the power of dozens of filters into one convenient tool. This is something other photo software is missing; and what’s more important, it’s something that all photographers will greatly benefit from,” concluded La Rue.

There is also a new workspace called Quick & Awesome. It consists of three filters which can create results very quickly: the aforementioned Accent AI Filter, Saturation & Vibrance and Clarity. The latter two allow for fine-tuning of the image after application of the Accent AI filter. Other updates include plug-in integration with Aurora HDR 2017, faster masking/brushing, an improved vignette filter and better memory management.

This latest update of Luminar is currently available for Mac only but Macphun is planning to launch a public beta of Luminar for PC in July. More information and free trials are available on the Macphun website.

Lee Filters introduces Solar Eclipse filter and new filter wash fluid

07 Jun

Lee Filters has announced it has a new filter aimed at those wanting to capture the phases of a solar eclipse. The Solar Eclipse Filter is a deep blue and cuts twenty stops of light to make brightness levels more manageable for regular cameras.

The company says it uses a blue coloration to remove damaging infrared from the sun’s rays, so users should expect to perform some color correction in post-production. As a starting point, Lee recommends bracketing around an exposure of F8 at 1/800sec and ISO 800, and points out that the filter is designed for the stages in which the sun is in partial eclipse so it needs to be removed to record the totality stages.

The Lee Solar Eclipse filter will be available for each of Lee’s three systems.

As we all know, aiming into the light shows up dust and dirty on our lenses and filters, so it is timely that Lee has also introduced a new filter cleaning fluid. ClearLee Filter Wash comes in a spray bottle of 50ml or 300ml and is formulated to remove grease from glass and resin filters.

For more information see the Lee Filters website. http://www.leefilters.com

Pricing exclusive of tax
Solar Eclipse Filter (Seven5 System) – £60.50/$ 95
Solar Eclipse Filter (100mm System) – £89.10/$ 150
Solar Eclipse Filter (SW150 System) – £113.30/$ 200
ClearLee Filter Wash 50ml Bottle – £7.00
ClearLee Filter Wash 300ml Bottle – £20.00

Press release

Solar Eclipse Filter

Solar eclipse photography is becoming increasingly popular, and achieving good results can be surprisingly straightforward. However, without the right sort of filter, results will be blown out and overexposed – even at the lowest ISOs and fastest shutter speeds.

In response to the needs of those who often travel the world to witness this fascinating phenomenon, LEE Filters has introduced the Solar Eclipse Filter. Available for the Seven5, 100mm and SW150 systems, the Solar Eclipse Filter is capable of reducing the intensity of light by 20 stops, bringing the exposure range down to a manageable level. It is designed to allow the user to capture the partial phases of an eclipse (the stages before and after total eclipse) with accuracy and consistency. The filter should be removed when photographing totality.

The filter simply slots into the standard LEE Filters holder, and features a foam seal at the rear, to ensure a snug fit and to avoid light leaks.

It should be noted that the Solar Eclipse Filter is suitable only for photography of eclipses, and is not recommended for general, long-exposure landscape photography. This is because it is designed to filter out some of the sun’s harmful infrared rays, and is therefore very blue in colour. Any colour cast affecting eclipse images can be corrected in postproduction, or the images converted to black and white.

Pricing
Solar Eclipse Filter (Seven5 System) – £60.50 (Excl VAT)
Solar Eclipse Filter (100mm System) – £89.10 (Excl VAT)
Solar Eclipse Filter (SW150 System) – £113.30 (Excl VAT)

ClearLEE Filter Wash

In the course of the average photographic day, filters can be exposed to all sorts of potentially damaging conditions – from rain to sand to salt spray from the sea – not to mention grubby fingerprints from being handled.

Keeping filters clean not only increases their lifespan, it also means images retain their clarity and sharpness, as the sort of softness that arises from a dirty filter can be almost impossible to correct in postproduction.

ClearLEE Filter Wash has been specially formulated to cut through dirt and grease quickly, efficiently and above all, safely, and is suitable for use on both resin and glass filters.

Supplied in an aluminium bottle with a spray top, ClearLEE Filter Wash is available in 300ml and a smaller 50ml size, which is ideal for dropping into a camera bag when heading out on a shoot.

To use, simply spray directly on to the filter, then wipe with a clean microfibre or lint-free cloth. For best results, buff the filter with a fresh cloth or tissue.

Pricing
50ml Bottle – £7.00 (Excl VAT)
300ml Bottle – £20.00 (Excl VAT)

You must remember though, that hähnel have a long-standing reputation for their wireless flash trigger range which includes the popular Tuff TTL & Viper flash triggers.

The MODUS 600RT is powered by one of their best-sellingLi-ion batteries –the staggeringly powerful hähnel Extreme Li-Ion battery which beats the speed of AA-powered speedlight’s hands down.

This new speedlight has a GN of 60 and each unit will handle over 550 shots at full power. Rather than waiting the normal 4-6 seconds which normal Speedlight’s would require at full power, the MODUS 600RT has fast re-cycling in abundance at just 1.5 seconds. The built-in wireless receiver/transmitter offer TTL, manual and multi-modes and high speed sync supports up to 1/8000 of a sec.

The unique wireless connectivity really steps into a league of its own though when the MODUS 600RT is paired with the Viper TTL Wireless Flash Trigger. Use them together and control up to 3 separate groups of flash guns in either TTL, manual or Multi (Stroboscopic) mode.

DCM channel matching and over 100m range makes the Viper TTL the perfect partner for this new speedlight.

Available for Canon, Nikon & Sony.
