Bowens introduces Generation X studio and portable flash heads with TTL radio control

UK flash manufacturer Bowens will use the PhotoPlus Expo to launch its new range of Generation X flash heads in the USA. The new range has a completely new design and features a portable model that is powered by an in-body rechargeable battery.

There are four heads in the new range: the XMT 500, XMS 500, XMS 750 and XMS 1000, all of which offer radio controlled triggering and control via new on-camera transceiver XMSR Trigger. The XMS mono-block heads are designed for indoor and in-studio use while the XMT 500 takes a removable lithium ion cell that the company claims delivers up to 500 full power bursts per charge. This portable head also offers TTL control for Canon, Nikon and Sony users.

All of the new heads have a high speed sync mode that allows shutter speeds as short a 1/8000sec, and the XMSR radio remote allows such high speed shooting with any brand of camera. The XMT 500 has a minimum flash duration of 1/10,309sec, and the XMS heads have shortest durations of 1/5180sec, 1/4800sec and 1/4400sec, which makes them all suitable for freezing action and moving subjects.

The XMS 500 has 7 stops of adjustable power, while the XMS 750 and XMS 1000 offer 8 stops. The XMT can manage 9 stops and has a lowest output of just 2Ws. The battery-operated head has recycle times of between 0.01 and 2 seconds, and the XMS 1000 can also recover from a full power burst in 2 seconds. Bowens claims each of the heads has a flash-to-flash consistency of +/-30°K and +/-0.05 stops.

Bowens is particularly proud of a new adjustment lever that allows the heads to be tilted very quickly without the user having to wind open a bolt. The new lever just flips open to allow the angle of the head to be adjusted and then flips back to lock the head in position.

Bowens Launches Game Changing Generation X Flash Range

Phottix introduces Canon RT version of its battery-powered Indra500 TTL studio flash head

Flash and accessory manufacturer Phottix has announced a new version of its Indra500 studio head that has a built-in TTL radio receiver for Canon’s RT flash system. The new head can be controlled directly from a Canon RT radio Speedlite in the hotshoe of a compatible camera or by using a Canon ST-E3 or Phottix Laso transmitter instead. The head can be used in flash networks alongside 600EX ll-RT and 430EX lll-RT radio-controlled Speedlites as well as non-RT flash guns that are fitted with a Laso receiver. The Laso receiver converts optically-triggered flashguns so that they can be controlled via 2.4GHz radio signals.

In all other ways the Indra500 LC TTL head is the same as Phottix’s standard Indra500 heads that offer TTL control with Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras via the Phottix Odin radio communication system. The heads have a maximum output of 500W/s and provide high speed sync options as well as manual output control across eight stops from 1/128th power. The heads take Bowens S-mount accessories and can be powered by the Phottix Indra 500mAh li-ion battery pack or via a mains adapter.

The company hasn’t announced a price for the Indra500LC TTL but the existing heads retail for $ 1419 including the battery, battery cable, a 5in reflector and a carry case.

Another Phottix First: Phottix Indra500LC TTL Studio Light compatible with the Canon RT System

Phottix presents the first studio light system compatible with Canon’s radio flash system. The Indra500 TTL, introduced in 2014, was the next generation of Phottix’s innovative TTL products – the Indra500LC takes that one step further – incorporating the radio control and triggering of the Canon RT and the Phottix Laso triggering systems. The Indra500LC gives photographers 500W/s of TTL power, opening up new possibilities and allowing photographers to shoot in shutter and aperture priority modes with incredible power.

High Speed Sync
With the Phottix Indra500LC TTL’s High Speed Sync function photographers can shoot at higher sync speeds* allowing wider apertures while still being able to control ambient light. In manual mode the Indra500LC offers 8 stops of power adjustments – from full power to 1/128 in 1/3rd stop increments. With Stroboscopic Mode, the Phottix Indra can be used for special effect and creative shooting with flash frequencies of 1-100HZ and flash counts of 1-100 times.

Built-in Triggering
The Phottix Indra500LC TTL has the power and control of the Canon RT and Phottix Laso triggering systems built-in. Switch between TTL and Manual modes, adjust EV and manual power levels and use high speed sync, all from the Canon ST-E3, compatible Canon RT Speedlites and the Phottix Laso Transmitter – no extra hardware is needed.

Canon non-RT Flashes
One of the best things of the Phottix Laso Triggering system is its ability to incorporate older non-radio Canon flashes into a photographer’s workflow. There’s no need to set aside older non-RT flashes such as the venerable 580 EXII – add a Phottix Laso Receiver and gain the ability to control and trigger it. Add legacy flashes, Canon RT-enabled flashes – and the Phottix Indra500 LC for a complete lighting solution.

PocketWizard introduces FlexTT5 TTL radio system for Panasonic

PocketWizard is making its FlexTT5 TTL radio system available to Panasonic shooters, bringing wireless control to Panasonic’s speedlights without requiring a line of sight configuration. When used with the DMW-FL360L and DMW-FL580L the FlexTT5 will allow for sync speeds of 1/8000sec. TTL compatibility will be limited to those two flash units and the Lumix GH4 at launch; PocketWizard plans to add support for other bodies and flashes with firmware updates.

The PocketWizard FlexTT5 for Panasonic will be available worldwide at the end of October at $ 186 for a single radio or $ 299 for two radios and a bag.

Canon introduces global shutter CMOS sensor with improved dynamic range

Canon has announced a global shutter CMOS sensor with a re-designed pixel structure aimed at boosting dynamic range. Using global shutter presents a clear benefit for the sensor’s videography applications, as it doesn’t suffer from the distortion effects that a standard ‘progressive scan’ sensor does when capturing fast-moving subjects.

However, global shutter designs have tended to offer less dynamic range than their conventional counterparts. Canon says that the sensor’s drive system (the way it’s read out) increases the amount of light the sensor can capture before overexposing. This is combined with a more efficient pixel structure and ‘optimized internal configuration’ to reduce noise and increase sensitivity. The result should be improved dynamic range, though it’s not clear how this improved performance will compare with traditional chips of the kind that exhibit rolling shutter.

Canon says it will explore use of the chip in measurement and industrial applications, and consider applications in video production. No details of the sensor’s size or resolution were given.

Canon develops global shutter-equipped CMOS sensor that achieves expanded dynamic range through new drive method

TOKYO, August 31, 2016—Canon Inc. today announced that it has developed a new CMOS sensor equipped with a global shutter function that, because it exposes all of the sensor’s pixels at the same time, enables the capture of distortion-free images even when shooting fast-moving objects. Employing a new signal-readout drive system and new pixel structure that significantly expands the full well capacity and reduces noise, the sensor contributes to high-image-quality video capture by making possible the realization of a wide dynamic range.

Distortion-free image capture when shooting fast-moving objects

Standard CMOS sensors make use of the rolling shutter method, which sequentially exposes the pixels one row at a time. Because rolling shutters can create slight discrepancies in signal-readout timing depending on the location of the pixel, images of fast-moving objects may appear distorted and flash photography may result in the occurrence of the flash band phenomenon, in which the upper and lower portions of images display different levels of brightness. Because Canon’s newly developed CMOS sensor employs a global shutter, when shooting such fast-moving objects as a rotating propeller or a speeding train, subjects are able to retain their proper form to create distortion-free images. Enabling the confirmation of object shapes with a high degree of accuracy, the sensor offers potential benefits in industrial applications, including as a sensor for use in inspection cameras.

Wide dynamic range realized through new proprietary drive method and pixel structure

When the newly developed CMOS sensor converts light into electrical signals and stores the signal charge in memory, the new drive system achieves a significant expansion in full well capacity. Also, because it employs a structure that efficiently captures light and each pixel incorporates an optimized internal configuration, the sensor makes possible increased sensitivity with reduced noise. The expanded full well capacity, realized through the sensor’s new drive system, and substantial reduction in noise, enabled by the new pixel structure, combine to deliver a wide dynamic range, facilitating the capture of high-image-quality, high-definition footage even when shooting scenes containing large variances in brightness.

Canon will explore various industrial and measurement applications for the newly developed CMOS sensor and consider deploying it in the field of video production for cinema production applications, TV dramas, commercials and more.

Sony introduces FE 50mm F2.8 Macro with 1:1 reproduction

Sony has announced the FE 50mm F2.8 Macro, a full-frame lens with true 1:1 macro magnification. It provides a minimum focus distance of 16cm/6.3in and is resistant to dust and moisture. Its design includes 8 elements in 7 groups and a rounded 7-blade aperture.

The Sony FE 50mm F2.8 Macro will sell for $ 500 when it goes on sale in September.

Sony Releases Full-Frame FE 50mm F2.8 Macro Lens

A lightweight and compact standard 50mm F2.8 macro prime lens that offers versatile shooting experience

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 30, 2016 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced a new full-frame lens for their E-mount camera system, the FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens (model SEL50M28).

Ideal for everyday photography, this 50mm macro lens features an F2.8 maximum aperture that offers outstanding image quality and bokeh, while its 1:1 macro capability allows the photographer to get sharp close-up shots of their subject. Canon introduces EF 16-35mm F2.8L III USM and EF 24-105mm F4L IS II USM L-series glass

Coinciding with the announcement of the 5D Mark IV, Canon has introduced updates to two L-series lenses: the EF 16-35mm F2.8L III USM and EF 24-105mm F4L IS II USM. The 24-105mm F4L II offers improved image stabilization, claiming four stops to its predecessor’s three, and adds air sphere coating for better resistance to ghosting and flare. Two aperture blades have been added, totaling 10 now – arguably one more than it should have for pleasing sunstar rendition.

The third iteration of Canon’s 16-35mm F2.8L uses a large diameter GMO (glass-molded) dual surface aspherical lens. Like its predecessors the lens is water- and dust-resistant, and Canon claims the new lens boasts improved durability. We’ve seen some initial comparisons vs. the Mark II, and the Mark III clearly addresses one of its predecessors largest shortcomings – poor off-center performance – while arguably improving upon one of its most revered qualities: beautiful sunstars, now with 18 rays.

The EF 16-35mm F2.8L III USM will cost $ 2,199 and the EF 24-105mm F4L IS II USM will sell for $ 1099. Both lenses are scheduled for October availability.

Nikon introduces D3400 with SnapBridge, big battery life claims

Nikon has announced the D3400, updating its most beginner-friendly entry-level DSLR. The D3400 is physically smaller than its D3300 predecessor, but continues to offer many of the same specifications including a 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter. Nikon says the battery is rated to 1200 shots per charge, which is a serious boost compared to the D3300’s already respectable 700 shots per charge.

SnapBridge is a new addition to this line, enabling connectivity with a mobile device over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) – though no Wi-Fi connectivity is offered. The D3400 offers an EXPEED 4 processor, 11-point AF system, 1080/60p video, 5 fps burst shooting and a 3″ 921k-dot LCD, all consistent with its predecessor.

The Nikon D3400 will be available starting early September for $ 649.99 with the AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR. A two lens kit also including the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm F4.5-6.3G ED (non-VR) will be offered for $ 999.95.

Kipon introduces reducer to fit Nikon F and Leica R lenses to Micro Four Thirds bodies

Japanese lens and accessory maker Kipon has introduced a pair of focal length reducers that allow users to mount Nikon F and Leica R lenses to Micro Four Thirds cameras to give a 1.4x crop factor. The company says that the Kipon Baveyes NIK-m4/3 0.7x and Baveyes L/R-m4/3 0.7x reducers make a 50mm lens designed for full-frame systems act as a 70mm equivalent once the focal length doubling effect of the Micro Four Thirds system is taken into account. Kipon also claims that the reducer makes the mounted lenses a stop faster too.

Without the lenses in the reducer a 50mm Nikkor lens mounted on a Micro Four Thirds camera would behave as a 100mm due to the smaller size of the system’s sensors, so the wide-angle elements in the adapters reduce the apparent crop factor applied to the adapted lens. The company gives an example of a 35mm lens mounted via the adapter producing the angle of view one would expect from a 49mm lens on a full-frame body.

The price of the adapters has only been released in Japanese Yen, and is quoted as ¥23,000 plus tax, which is approximately $ 230/£180.

Samyang introduces full-frame 20mm F1.8 ED AS UMC

Samyang’s summer lens party continues with the announcement of a 20mm F1.8 full-frame prime. The manual focus lens offers seven aperture blades and a minimum focus distance of 0.2m/0.6ft. Two aspherical lenses and three extra-low dispersion elements are included in the lens’ 13 elements in 12 groups. The 20mm F1.8 will be offered in ten mounts:

Nikon introduces Coolpix W100 waterproof compact with Snapbridge

Nikon has announced the Coolpix W100, a waterproof compact with SnapBridge connectivity, in select Asian and European markets. The W100 appears to be a variation of the Coolpix S33 announced last February for North America, providing the same smartphone-size 13.2MP sensor, 3X optical zoom lens (30-90mm equiv.) and durability – the W100 is waterproof to 32ft/10m, shockproof to 5.9ft/1.8m and freezeproof to +14F/-10C. Full 1080p HD video is also included.

Touted for its kid-friendly ergonomics, the W100 adds connectivity to the mix in the form of its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 LE SnapBridge system. Other additions include the ability to add cartoon effects and stamps to images, as well as an ‘add Light Trails’ mode that uses multiple exposures to capture light trails.

  2. Functions and a level of performance that make capturing beautiful photos easy
    The camera has an effective pixel count of 13.2 megapixels*1, and is equipped with a 3x optical zoom NIKKOR lens. It is also equipped with Dynamic Fine Zoom*2, that can be used to achieve approximately 6x zoom with which resolution is preserved in the digital zoom range. In addition, the camera offers a number of functions that make capturing beautiful photos easy, including Underwater Face Framing, which detects and automatically photographs human faces when the camera is in the water, and Target Finding AF*3, with which the camera detects and focuses on the primary subject. What’s more, the camera is equipped with a new Add Light Trails (Multiple Exp. Photos taken with the camera can be automatically transferred*1 to a smart device, and if uploaded from SnapBridge, an unlimited number of thumbnail images can be automatically uploaded*2 from the smart device to Nikon’s photo sharing service, NIKON IMAGE SPACE.   5. A function for recording full-HD*1 movies with stereo sound that can be used to preserve high-quality movies of memories
    The camera is equipped with a full-HD movie recording function that enables recording of high-quality movies by simply pressing the movie-record button. The effects of camera shake can be effectively reduced with the electronic vibration reduction (VR) function.
