Architectural Kaleidoscopes: Buildings Spun into Fractal Art

27 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

fractal building exterior dome

Reimagined, repositioned and recomposed, this photo manipulation series turns familiar elements of buildings into abstracted compositions that morph beyond architecture, bridging disparate worlds of design and art.

fractal tower windows

Canadian photographer Cory Stevens starts with exteriors, ceilings, walls and windows, then adds his artistic twist – a variation on the polar panoramic approach.

fractal architecture glass

While pattern recognition may persist in some cases, the rotation and multiplication in many of these pieces makes them increasingly abstract.

fractal building rotation progression

The symmetry of these fractal forms begin to make us see other patterns of nature, like snowflakes or star systems, in the shapes and materials of otherwise everyday towers, monuments, habitations, town squares and civic circles.

From the photographer: “Though my primary focus is on architecture and urban environments, I also like to indulge my love of the natural landscape. Digital abstracts have also become a growing segment of my work – inspired by my passion for design and the modern aesthetic.”

That’s Sketchy: Rough Sketches Turned Into Real Furniture

22 Dec

[ By Steph in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Rough Sketch Furniture 1
These images may look like people photoshopped onto a background of sketches, but look again – those scribbles are actual, three-dimensional furniture. Art student Daigo Fukawa of Tokyo University for the Arts created a collection of chairs and benches that seem like they just magically popped up off the paper.

Rough Sketch Furniture 2

Made for his senior thesis, the series of optical illusion furniture appears to be made from welded metal, and while it’s probably not the most comfortable seating anyone has ever experienced, it’s definitely cool to look at, undoubtedly eliciting plenty of double-takes in person.

Rough Sketch Furniture 3

Rough Sketch Furniture 4

See lots more unusual, creative and transforming furniture including convertible designs, flat-pack furniture, recycled pieces and brilliant bookcases.

Talking Windows: Trains Deliver Ads Directly into Your Head

26 Oct

[ By Delana in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

marketing through bone conduction ads

Television, radio, the internet, billboards, newspapers, magazines, malls, supermarkets…wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, it’s highly likely that at least a few  companies are trying to market their products to you every moment. A quiet train ride and a nice nap used to be a welcome escape from the cacophony of consumerism, but soon even your commute-time nap may be filled with the sounds of advertisements.

bone conduction train ads

The German branch of ad company BBDO has tested a form of bone conduction technology on a train between Munich and North Rhine-Westphalia. When a commuters rest their heads against a window, hoping to catch a few winks before getting to their destination, ads which were previously inaudible suddenly begin playing inside their heads.

The technology works by using high-frequency transmitters to send sounds through the train’s windows. If you aren’t touching the window you can’t hear the ads at all. But lean your head against the window and the sounds are loud and clear, having been transmitted through your skull and directly to your inner ear. It’s the same concept that makes bone-conduction headphones and hearing aids work.

talking train window advertisements

Although BBDO has no current plans to actually put the technology into use, the fact that it was tried out successfully may mean that this type of marketing will soon be used on a wider scale. We have a feeling commuters would object to the practice of advertisements invading their sleep, but if trains played relaxing music or important travel information in this manner it would be much easier to get behind the idea.
