YI M1 Sample Gallery

28 Oct

The YI M1 is a new Micro Four Thirds camera by a China-based company called Young Innovators. Built around a familiar 20MP Sony sensor, the M1 offers quite a bit of room for Raw post processing. We took the YI around Seattle and over the hills to Leavenworth, WA to photograph some fall color.

Tamron’s newly updated SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 G2 telephoto lens is weather sealed and sports a number of upgrades, including improved image quality over its previous iteration. The real question is how does it hold up in the real-world? We took the lens to the streets – and to the roof deck – to get a feel for its performance in this sample image gallery.

18 Oct

The Pentax 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE is a new variable aperture ultra telephoto zoom that is the first Pentax lens to use their new ‘Pulse Autofocus Motor’. Although it is a bit darker than the old 55-300, autofocus is much faster and virtually silent. Take a look at our samples to see how sharp this handy new zoom is.

Google’s camera product manager Issac Reynolds has posted the first gallery from the company’s upcoming Pixel smartphones, which received the highest DxOMark Mobile score to date. While we can’t be sure if any processing has been conducted, we think the results  look promising. You can view and download the originals on Reynolds’ Google Photos page.

iPhone 7 real-world sample gallery

07 Oct

The iPhone 7 lacks the dual camera modules of its iPhone 7 Plus sibling, but it still offers plenty of imaging features. It includes a 12MP sensor with optical image stabilization, 4K video recording and thanks to iOS 10, Raw image capture. We’ve already posted a preliminary iPhone 7 Plus gallery, but not wanting to neglect the iPhone 7, we went spent some time getting to know its sibling too.

Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art real world sample gallery

04 Oct

Hot on the heels of its Photokina announcement, the Sigma 12-24mm F4 Art arrived on our doorstep last week, meaning it was time to shoot wide. Just 1mm shy of matching the world’s widest rectilinear zoom, the Canon 11-24mm F4 L, the Sigma gives a large amount of the Canon’s focal range for a much lower price of $ 1599. To see if its images are as tempting as the specs are, we wasted no time getting it out in the real world mounted on the new Canon 5D Mark IV, the 5DSR, and a Sony a7R II with Sigma’s MC11 adaptor.

Going wide: Irix 15mm F2.4 sample gallery

02 Oct

Swiss company Irix recently released two versions of their 15mm F2.4 prime to the consumer market. The Irix 15mm is offered in two varieties: ‘Blackstone’ and the ‘Firefly.’ The Irix Blackstone features a magnesium and aluminum body able to withstand ‘extreme conditions,’ while the Irix Firefly model is, according to the company, the lightest lens in its class. Both versions of the lens are available in Canon EF-, Nikon F- and Pentax K-mount.

The lens is composed of 15 elements in 11 groups and produces a really nice sunstar and some, well, very interesting lens flare. Interestingly enough although the lens states its widest aperture is F2.4, the best we could do on the Canon 5DS R was F2.5. In any case we put the lens to the test over a few weeks of shooting and here are the results.

iPhone 7 Plus real-world sample gallery

01 Oct

With our iPhone 7 Plus review underway, we’ve started off by putting together an initial gallery of real-world samples testing its performance in various light conditions. The 7 Plus is the first Apple device equipped with dual camera modules, so we’ve taken a look at wide and telephoto performance in addition to the camera’s Portrait mode, which simulates shallow depth of field.

Pleasantly punchy: Nikon D3400 real-world samples gallery

30 Sep

The Nikon D3400 is the company’s newest entry-level DSLR, offering users 24MP and an 11-point AF system in a compact, lightweight body. It may not be the most exciting camera for Nikon faithful on paper, but in the real-world, it offers impressive image quality that will put any smartphone camera to shame. We used the camera mostly in the ‘Auto’ or ‘No Flash Auto’ modes, and were pleasantly surprised by its default output – metering is usually spot-on, with good sharpening and punchy color (though it may be over-the-top for some).

Over the past week, we’ve had a chance to photograph city living, botanical still-life, playful pups and yes, even some sleepy cats. Take a look at how the D3400, its 18-55mm kit lens and the DX 35mm F1.8G lens fared in our real-world samples gallery.

We’ve only had the 5D Mark IV for a couple days, but that hasn’t stopped us from taking it out for a bit of shooting. Take a look at some sample images from Canon’s latest full-frame DSLR.

*Raw conversions have been performed with a very early beta build of Adobe Camera Raw. Image quality may not represent the final shipping version.
