Pentax K-70 real-world sample gallery

19 Aug

It’s a bit of a shame the K-70 didn’t arrive in the middle of winter. The weather-resistant design would have made it the perfect companion for braving the inevitable Northwest rain, and the famed in body “Shake Reduction” would have helped in overcast light conditions, as well. Nevertheless, when it arrived we took the refined 24MP DSLR out in the hot summer sun for a bit of a sample shakedown.

Lensbaby Twist 60 real-world sample gallery

06 Aug

Lensbaby’s Twist 60 is all about the bokeh. It promises appealing subject/background separation with Petzval-like swirly bokeh, offering an F2.5 maximum aperture. The Twist 60 is part of Lensbaby’s Optic Swap system and is currently offered for Canon, Nikon and Sony E mounts. We just couldn’t resist taking it out for a spin  — and we have to confess that we stuck mostly to wide open apertures in order to get the full swirly effect.  Take a look at our samples below, and stay tuned for more thoughts on swirly bokeh!

Gallery update: Nikon 300mm F4E PF ED VR

03 Aug

The Nikon 300mm F4E PF ED VR is one heck of a compact telephoto lens. Since we posted our first samples from the lens last May, we’ve shot quite a lot with it including concerts, motocross, sprint boat racing, rugby and tennis (some of the images previously appeared in our Nikon D5 review). The more we use it, the more we like it, so this seemed like a great time to update our original sample gallery with with some fresh shots.

Sony Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA Sample Gallery

11 Jul

Sony has just announced its Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA lens, a high quality normal for its E-mount Alpha line of cameras. At a shooting event in San Diego, we had a chance to go hands-on. It’s a formidable lens, smaller than the 85mm GM with its 72mm filter thread, but significantly larger than the FE 55mm F1.8 ZA already available for the system.

So what does that extra heft and glass get you besides top notch build quality and ergonomics? Have a look at our gallery where we’ve posted a smattering of real-world portraits at fast apertures shot using Eye AF on the 42MP Alpha 7R II, some shallow focus shots at various apertures to get an idea of axial CA, as well as some infinity horizons at various apertures for the assessment of sharpness (day scene) and coma (night scene).

We’re duly impressed by the lens’ sharpness across the field wide open, lack of axial CA (green/purple fringing just outside the focal plane), and pleasing bokeh, but to keep things objective, we’ll be following up soon with a brief comparison of these attributes against the already stellar FE 55/1.8 ZA. Look for updates to this gallery as well in the coming days.

Pentax K-1 real-world sample gallery

02 Jul

We’ve been shooting a lot with the Pentax K-1 and have seen what that manufacturer’s first full-frame DSLR is capable of. Its 36MP sensor has shown impressive results in dynamic range tests, especially when coupled with the camera’s Pixel Shift mode. Its sensor-shift image stabilization, extensive weather sealing and attractive price make it very appealing to outdoorsy types and landscape photographers.

Fortunately, we have several of those kinds of people on staff. They’ve been out shooting the K-1, from the highest mountain peaks to the dimmest concert venues. Our full review is almost wrapped up, but for now we’ve put together a gallery of real-world samples to show you where the K-1 has been so far.

Panasonic Lumix G Leica 12mm F1.4 real-world sample gallery

21 Jun

Introduced last week, Panasonic’s 12mm F1.4 brings a weather-resistant, fast 24mm equivalent prime to the Micro Four Thirds system. The Leica name on the lens is reflected in its sturdy metal build, its aperture control ring and its $ 1300 price tag. We intend to do much more shooting with the 12mm F1.4, including some architectural work, but for now here are some initial samples.

It was only a matter of time… new app turns your Instagram into virtual art gallery

08 Jun

Have you ever wanted to see your photographs on the wall of an art gallery? Come on – be honest. Your cat pictures deserve a wider audience, and the makers of new app ‘Instamuseum’ agree.

Instamuseum converts any Instagram account into a 3D virtual reality experience, placing images (up to 90) from the feed on the walls of a computer-generated gallery space. There are four templates available (including ‘Louvre’) and the rendered space can be explored using VR goggles or using a more conventional pan / zoom interface in a desktop browser.

Coming in the same week as the actual Louvre gallery in Paris (into which we’ve placed DPReview’s Instagram feed, above) was evacuated due to historic flooding, we can’t help wondering if this is just another sign of the end times. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Go wide or go home: Voigtlander 15mm Super-Wide-Heliar lens gallery

18 May

Sony shooters took note in October when Voigtlander announced it would release three ultra-wide-angle primes for full-frame E-mount cameras. When we managed to borrow a 15mm F4.5 Super-Wide-Heliar for a few days, we handed it right over to DPR staffer and veteran landscape photographer Chris Williams. Read some quick impressions on the lens and take a look at a small selection of his images.

As a professional landscape photographer I’ve shot a number of wide-angle lenses and to say that I was impressed by the Voigtlander 15mm prime is a bit of an understatement. The lens excels in sharpness throughout the frame and maintains a high level of performance across nearly every aperture. Being that it is a super wide prime, it does suffer from barrel distortion (as most ultra and super wides do) but the amount of lens that you get for the money is impressive.

Chromatic aberration really only becomes apparent wide open where the corners also tend to soften up a bit. Overall the lens performed very well, so well in fact that I may pick one up for myself at some point.

The other really nice thing about the Voigtlander 15mm is that it accepts traditional screw on filters. The Tokina 16-28mm F2.8, Nikon 14-24mm F2.8 and the Canon 11-24mm F4L all require external filter systems like those designed by Fotodiox. The Voigtlander accepts standard 58mm threaded filters, which is rare for a prime (or even a zoom) this wide.

Nikon D500 real-world sample gallery updated

13 May

Shooting with the Nikon D500 continues, both in Seattle and in Palm Springs, California. DPR staffer Richard Butler is there with Nikon, weathering some scorching temperatures and getting to know the local residents at the Living Desert Zoo. We’ve added some images to our existing D500 sample gallery, and you can keep your eyes peeled for more very soon.
