Right about now I feel like Alice in Wonderland, holding the "drink me" cup. Having a leaf shutter, a built-in 3-stop neutral density filter and a real chip in a compact camera is opening up a whole new world of possibilities.
But with these possibilities come some quirks, some compromises and a few technical things to be mindful of. What you need to know about leaf-shutter compacts and daylight flash, below.

If you ask 10 different photographers what makes a great photograph, you’lll surely wind up with 10 different answers. However, there are three constants: a subject, a photographer, and a camera. For our new series, Shots Fired, we wanted to put the hottest cameras in the hands of the best photographers and let them loose to shoot whatever subjects their hearts desired. First up we have Zack Arias, an editorial and commercial photographer based in Atlanta who describes his style as “simple, straightforward, bold, classic, true, and straight from camera.” His work has been featured in TIME, USA Today, and AFP. He’s also done some work for Sony Music, BMI, and Elektra. His resume is serious. You can head to his personal site to learn more. For the first episode Arias brings along one our favorite cameras of the moment, the retro-styled, ICL Fuji X-Pro1, and takes us on a tour of his native ATL.

The Camera Store’s Chris Niccolls had a chance to use the very exciting Fujifilm X100 for a day. So he grabbed renowned photographer Tyler Stalman (www.stalman.com) and spent a day in the freezing Alberta cold taking photos. Chris and Tyler check out the innovative hybrid viewfinder, camera controls, and test out the amazing sync speed for flash photography. Huge thanks to Stephen Lemmer and Sean Chamberlain for enduring the cold to help us out!

First day with Fujifilm Finepix Real 3D W3. Filming my 2yr old daughter having fun at the playground in 3D, that’s a first for her too, althought she probably didn’t realize that. Somehow I never got round to taking my twin DSLR rig out with the kids as by the time I would have assembled and aligned it, she’d do something naughty because of the lack of attention. So anyway I was really looking forward to having a portable 3D HD device like to W3 was announced at 720p 3D. The camera’s build feels nice and robust, and althought I can’t compare it to the W1 as I never had it, this is actually alright. Being used to all manual options on a DSLR I was missing the freedom a bit, but I could get over it, unlike the tiniest field of view this camera has even at 16:9 setting for HD video, and only for 7MP stills, the 10MP stills are done in 2:3 aspect at even worse FOV. Ok, now the editing part. I have done some tests of automaticly aligning frame grabs and this is what I was getting: yfrog.com So I don’t think my cam’s manufactory lens alignment is too bad, but if yours is better of worse, send me a link to your results. This of coure requires either a floating window, which is what I have done in this video, or scaling up back to 720 which I don’t recommend as the video quality is really, and I mean really poor already when coming out of the cam. I could’t believe how poor it was, so I’ve checked some other videos I done with twin Vado HD’s – and they’re two years old – they look … Video Rating: 4 / 5

Fuji continues on a roll with a new entry in its exciting X series of cameras, the X-E1 which Nick Devlin has been working with and testing for the past little while.
Nick’s review is now online.
"You and Jeff did it again! A great series of videos.
I’ve watched the earlier Camera to Print series as well as the LR 2 & 3 videos and as usual, I learned
new technique and ideas even though I’ve been behind a camera for 45 years.
Additionally, the rapport you two have is most engaging, enjoyable, and totally different than the sterile video tutorials from others (I’m afflicted with being a visual learner).
Again, a great series of videos that have helped me grow once again."
Same elecTRONica dancer at California Adventure, different platform, different night. This was shot with my Fuji W3 and edited in Sony Vegas Pro 10. The new version of Sony Vegas has native support of 3D videos. I no longer have to split the 3D-AVI file before opening the 3D video in Vegas. Auto correct is awesome! No more masking alignment corrections. Video is cropped to full frame. Workflow is streamlined. I will upgrade to the new version before my 30 day trial expires. Video Rating: 5 / 5
One of the elecTRONica dancers at California Adventure. They also had a sneak preview of TRON Legacy in the 3D Muppet Theatre. I am looking forward to seeing the full movie in 3D in December. This was shot with my Fuji W3 and edited in Sony Vegas Pro 10. Video Rating: 5 / 5
