[MODIFIED] Digital Camera Memory – Should You Buy a USB 3.0 Card Reader?

01 Aug

Advantages and disadvantages of a USB 3.0 memory card reader.

While most computers at the time this tip was written support USB 2.0, not all support USB 3.0, a higher-speed version of the USB standard. If you perform a lot of digital photo manipulation, copying gigabytes of photos between memory cards and various computers, upgrading to USB 3.0 may make sense in that it could save you time.

Unfortunately, if you are using older memory cards or memory cards geared towards average consumers instead of high-end hobbyists or professionals, you may find the purchase cost not worth the money. Medium or lower-range memory is rated at a lower transfer speed that may not take advantage of the benefits USB 3.0 offers. Also, transfer speeds between USB 3.0 readers vary, so the cheapest reader may not result in the best performance….

[MODIFIED] Digital Night Photography – Reduce Camera Shake with Special Lens

04 Jun

A special lens may help you take better night photos by reducing ‘camera-shake’.

Obviously a tripod or other stabilizing device makes taking digital photographs at nighttime much easier. With a stabile digital camera you can take longer exposures that make up for the reduced lighting, and these photos should not suffer from the dreaded “camera shake”. The built-in or a shoe mount flash can also help in some situations.

However, there are times where your subject is too far away and too large to be affected by flash. Perhaps you are shooting panoramic photos on top of a skyscraper, and your flash unit is simply not going to illuminate buildings miles away. Or, you may be taking photos in an urban environment and tripods may be bulky or simply not allowed. …

Facebook creates Camera app for photo sharing and viewing on iOS

25 May

FacebookCamera.png

Facebook has announced a free app called Camera that focuses on viewing and sharing photos. Instead of showing what your friends are doing and thinking, it just dives straight to their photo galleries. The app also allows you to share multiple photos at a time, including descriptions and tagging. There are also tools for cropping and applying filters to your images. The app allows Facebook to be used in a much more Instagram-like manner (and it seems too soon for this to be a product of the Facebook buyout). Updated with first impressions.

645 PRO app for iPhone offers access to uncompressed camera output (but not Raw)

21 Apr

Jaggr.jpg

App developer Jag.gr has launched 645 PRO, a flexible photography and processing app that provides access to the uncompressed output of the iPhone’s camera. The company grabs the processed camera output before the phone compresses it, and saves it as a TIFF file. These files, which it slightly optimistically calls ‘Developed Raw,’ can then be accessed via iTunes. The app also offers a series of features such as spot metering and exposure, focus and white balance lock, as well as a series of film simulation options and aspect ratio options, but it’s the uncompressed output that is, as far as we are aware, unique.

Panasonic DMC-GF5 12MP mirrorless camera announced and previewed

09 Apr

panasonic_dmcgf5.png

Panasonic has formally announced the much-discussed DMC-GF5. We’ve had a pre-production GF5 for a couple of days, so we’ve had a look at what’s changed and what the diminutive Micro Four Thirds camera offers to compact camera users looking for better image quality but still wanting the option to simply point and shoot. The 12MP camera is a subtle revision over the GF3, but a higher-res screen, refined user interface and the inclusion of Panasonic’s retractable 14-42mm power zoom lens for a list price of $ 749.99/£579 makes it worth looking at.
