After months of rumors and leaks, Finnish handset maker Nokia today officially launched its latest flagship Windows phone, the Lumia 1020, at a press event in New York City. As far as we’re concerned of course, the most interesting feature is the Lumia 1020’s 41MP imaging sensor, an iteration of the groundbreaking technology that Nokia debuted last year in the 808 PureView phone. Simple, intuitive and innovative for the everyday photographer, Iris promises even more to the disabled, letting anyone control capture area, zoom level, the moment of a shot and other features … all with only eye movements.
Mimi Zou is a graduate of the Royal College of Art developed this eye-tracking camera design around biometric technology. The device can recognize people on both sides of the lens by their eyes – the person taking the picture (so it can pre-load preferred settings) as well as the person being photographed.
A translucent screen inhabits the center of the circular device, allowing you to get an augmented-reality look at your subject matter, with optional overlays indicating prominent buildings or other features of the built environment you may wish to capture.
Narrow your eyelids to zoom in, then open wide to zoom back out. Focus on a spot, blink twice, and a photo is taken. If a friend is recognized in the frame, there is also an option to tag them on the spot. And all of this functionality is rolled up into what looks like a cylindrical lens without a camera.
As of right now it remains a working model, but with luck, time and funding it might become the next wave in ever-more-minimalist photographic contraptions, and particularly powerful image-taking aid for those who cannot use hands to easily hold and point a camera.

The revolution in the cinema / video segment of our industry continues. Blackmagic, a respected video equipment manufacturer out of Australia, is about the ship its Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.
If you’re a meat-and-potatoes still photographer, why should you care? Well, maybe you shouldn’t. But if you’re a film / video creator of any stripe this is another major step toward the democratization of high quality production equipment at an amazingly low price.
And if you’re one of the major camera makers, well, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Here’s a relatively small Ozy company trumping you all by producing a video camera that shoots raw video for under $ 1,000, including an active Micro Four Thirds mount and a touch screen. Be afraid!

The perfect DSLR camera case can be hard to come by.
And more often than not, it doesn’t even resemble any of your fave animals. What gives?
That’s where the DIY Dog Camera Cozy swoops in to save the day. It’s a soft camera cozy for your DSLR, and our pal Sarah Goldschadt is the clever crafter behind it.
Here’s the story from Sarah:
“In 2009 I bought my first DSLR …I had recently learned how to crochet with the help of my friend Alicia Kachmar.
I ended up using the basic shape of slippers to create a lens cover and then kept crocheting around my camera to see what would happen.
When I finished, adding on buttons and ears seemed like a no-brainer. Since then, I’ve upgraded to a better camera and bought a new lens, so it’s always the perfect excuse to crochet a new cover.”

Ingredients:
Worsted weight yarn color of your choice
Crochet hook to correspond with your yarn size
Yarn needle
Scissors
4 buttons (two for the eyes, one for the nose, one to attach the case at the bottom)
Sewing thread
Sewing needle
STEP 1: Make a Circle for the Nose
Single crochet a circle and increase until it matches the width of your lens cap.
For those just getting started, here are some helpful tutorials: Chain, Slip Stitch, Single Crochet, Crochet a Circle
STEP 2: Crochet a Snout
Single crochet around and around until it’s the length of your lens.
Helpful tutorial: Single Crochet
STEP 3: Do a Little Turn
Turn your work and use half of the stitches to single crochet back and forth. It should be long enough to go over the top of your camera and down to the bottom of your viewer.
You might want to lay it over your camera and eyeball how much more you need to crochet. The end result will fit over your lens, wrap over the top of your camera, around the back, and button on the bottom of the “snout.”

STEP 4: Complete the Body
Decrease each round on both sides until 4 stitches remain. Chain 4 then join the chain to the 4th stitch in the last row with a slip stitch to form a loop for a button. Turn and crochet over the chain to reinforce it. Fasten off all ends and trim the excess yarn.
Helpful tutorials: Decreasing, Chain, Fastening Off
STEP 5: Make the Ears
To create a dog ear, chain 7, chain one and single crochet back and forth (with 7 stitches total in each row) until you’ve reached a desired length.
Decrease each row on both sides until 2 stitches remain. Single crochet around the entire shape and fasten off. Trim excess yarn. Repeat to make another ear.
STEP 6: Add Buttons for the Nose, Ears, Eyes
Attach the case to your camera and use your judgement to find the best places for the eyes, nose, ears, and button on the bottom of the case.
Take the case off and with extra yarn and a yarn needle, attach the ears with a whipstitch, then sew on the buttons and other features with sewing thread and sewing needle.
Helpful tutorial: Seaming
Taking It Further
The cozy can easily be modified to be a cat or bee or anything else you can dream of. Use embroidery thread to add whiskers or try making eyelashes.

Fujifilm officially announced (surprise) their new X-M1 camera as well as new Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R and XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS lenses. Many sites around the web have full write ups and test reports.
Of particular interest, to me at least, is new firmwarefor the X-Pro1 and X-E1 cameras that features focus peaking.
Fuji is to be lauded for continuing to update their existing camera line with firmware enhancements, something which other companies seem not to do with as great frequency.
It’s curious to note though that there are two firmware updates available, one dated today, June 25, for V2.05 and another dated July 23! for Version 3.0. Both for the X-Pro 1. Ooops!?
"Michael’s and Jeff’s tutorial videos are absolutely awesome, not only because of the information transmitted but also because of the casual, conversational style which somehow really makes things stick in your memory."
Fujifilm has announced the X-M1, a compact-bodied mirrorless camera that features a rather different design to its previous models. Instead of ‘traditional’ shutter speed and exposure compensation dials, the X-M1 uses twin electronic control dials to change exposure parameters. It has a tilting 920k dot 3″ LCD screen but no eye-level viewfinder, and uses the same 16MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor as the X-Pro1 and X-E1. It comes with a new kit zoom, the XC 16-50mm F3.6-5.6 OIS that offers a 24-75mm equivalent range and optical stabilisation, but has no aperture ring.
A few weeks ago as part of the launch of our new eBook – Photo Magic – we announced we’d be giving one Early Bird buyer of the eBook $ 1500 USD towards a new camera or lens.
Today we drew that winner and it is… Beverly Everson.
We’ve just emailed Beverly with details of how we can get that prize to her – Congratulations to Beverly, we look forward to hearing what you put your prize toward!
