On a daily basis, I’d rather be covered in spiders while raccoons gnaw at my feet (just like everybody else), but Los Angeles based photographer Charlie Chipman really seemed a nice person. Windows 8 – Prevent Current or New Drives from Being Defragmented / Optimized

Windows 8 will attempt to defragment current and newly-connected drives on a schedule – learn how to turn this off.
By default, Windows 8 will attempt to defragment, or optimize, your hard disks and partitions every week, an often useful tasks that can speed up your computer by moving data around.
You might determine that certain external hard disks should not be optimized on a schedule, instead choosing to optimize them on an as-needed basis. Also, defragmenting a solid state drive is not recommended and can actually shorten its lifespan. Thus you can configure the Optimize Drives tool to ignore certain drives or not optimize every new drive connected to the machine during the regular maintenance window….

Picasa – I’m Not Being Prompted to Confirm Deleting Photos!

If Picasa does not prompt you to confirm removing a photo from the album or deleting it from disk, turn these warnings back on.
Depending on your configuration, Picasa should notify you before removing a photo from the album or deleting it from the disk. The warning dialog (as long as you read it!) asks if you are absolutely sure before performing the selected operation. Especially in the case where your Recycle Bin is disabled, when you delete a photo, it may be gone forever. File recovery software may help, but is no guarantee.
In some cases, however, the warning dialogs may not appear. For example, if you are warned about deleting files and you check the “Don’t ask again, always remove” box, this potentially file-saving dialog will not appear again. In this case, later deleting a file from Picasa will occur immediately and without warning. If you have experienced this behavior once and want to help ensure it does not happen again, do the following:…

60-Second Photo Enhancement & Retouch — “Lianne Being Moody…”

This 60-second image enhancement & retouch shows how just a few changes can make a big difference an image. Though Sagelight has the Skin Smoothing retouch feature, this was not needed here. I added a soft-focus and the enhanced the contrast with the Dodge and Burn Brush. The was smoothed by the soft glow, and then sharpness was added back in via the contrast I added with the soft glow. I went especially contrasty in this picture, as her black jacket and hair, combined with the pink stripe of her hair complemented by her lips of the same color; all this made me want to create a very stark image to highlight her beautiful face — and that look!
