25 Jun

Our DIY forum isn’t a month old and we’ve already seen it fill with interesting projects. Some solve a problem, while others are pure fun. Decidedly in the latter category, dpreview forum member vkphoto has put a Sony NEX-F3 ‘digital back’ on a vintage ICA Toska camera from the early 1900s and a Carl Zeiss Tessar 135mm 1:6.3. See how he brought new life to an antique with a $ 15 modification. Learn more

Google Camera update brings back self-timer and 16:9 crop

30 May

fisheye.jpg

Google again updates its Camera App, this time with self-timer, 16:9 aspect ratio and two more panorama modes. This addresses a point of criticism raised by users when an update in April removed the self-timer function. Other features that come with the new version of the app include wide angle and fisheye panorama options that are based on the Photo Sphere technology.

Rezension: Back to The Future

23 May

© Irina Werning's Back to the Future, Pancho, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1983 and 2010, published by teNeues, www.teneues.com. Photo © 2014 Irina Werning. All rights reserved.

No Ice Cream in Back Pockets: America’s Weirdest Laws

03 May

[ By Steph in Art & Photography & Video. ]

America's Weirdest Laws 1

In Alabama, it is illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your back pocket. But New York-based photographer Olivia Locher is a rule-breaker, and she’s got the photo series to prove it. In ‘I Fought the Law,’ Locher visually documents dozens of ridiculous laws from around the country, including some real head-scratchers that make you wonder how they ever got on the books in the first place.

America's Weirdest Laws 2

America's Weirdest Laws 3

In Utah, you’d better not walk down the street carrying a violin in a paper bag, and in California, riding a bicycle in a swimming pool is strictly prohibited. Pickles must bounce to be legally considered pickles in Connecticut, and in Hawaii, you can’t walk around with coins in your ears.

America's Weirdest Laws 6

America's Weirdest Laws 7

Kansas makes it illegal to serve wine in teacups, while Wisconsin won’t let you serve apple pie in public restaurants without cheese. In Oregon, you’re not allowed to test your physical endurance while driving a car on the highway. If you want to sell logs in Tennessee, they better not be hollow.

America's Weirdest Laws 8

America's Weirdest Laws 4

America's Weirdest Laws 5

The photos highlight just how absurd and outdated these laws really are (though most of them are likely not enforced much anymore.) See the whole series (including some that are NSFW) at Olivia Locher’s website and tumblr.

Windows 8 – Bring Back the Mouse Pointer Drop Shadow

29 Apr

Make the Windows 8.1 mouse pointer stand out by adding a drop shadow.

As Windows 8.1 has adopted a flatter interface, gradients and drop shadows have been removed from a variety of places including the mouse pointer. If you feel that the mouse pointer drop shadow helps make it easier to spot on the Desktop, do the following:

1. Access the “Mouse” Control Panel. One way to do this is by pressing Windows + R, entering main.cpl and pressing Enter….

3 February, 2014 – Back From Antarctica

03 Feb

We are back in Chile after a very successful and incredible adventure to Antarctica.  The Luminous-Landscape team of Michael, Kevin and Chris as well William Neil lead a group of 63 photographers on a non-stop adventure.  We had the most incredible weather making every day perfect for photography.  We couldn’t have asked for a better group of participants and the Antarctica XXI Expedition team was absolutely the best.  We are now working our way back north and to home over the coming days. Once we get our feet on the ground we will have a lot more about this trip as well as a lot of other news. There are only a few berths left for the second Antarctica Trip in 2015.  After experiencing this this trip I would highly recommend that you sign up now as we are sure once we start publishing images and the trip log that these remaining spots will go fast.

Things we found stuffed down the back of CES 2014

13 Jan

ollocolors.jpg

CES 2014: After all of the meetings, hands-ons and reports were done, we spent a little time wandering the CES 2014 show floor, as we always do when time allows, and found a few interesting products on the side streets between the towering booths of major manufacturers. Many photo-focused products this year related to mobile in some way, standing beside an endless array of iCases, iKeyboards and iEverything else. Click through to see what we found when we left the beaten path…
