On Assignment: Back to the Well

22 May

Tian Lu (left) and Yuri Shadrin are both accomplished pianists in their own right. But when they play as a duet (on the same piano) they produce an intuitive mix of music and banter that could only come from the married couple that they are.

He is Russian, she is Chinese. Which made them the perfect choice to perform in China later this month in commemoration of an upcoming regional trade partnership between China and Russia.

So I shot their publicity portraits in one of my favorite little environmental portrait nooks in Howard County—under the fountain downtown at the lakefront. I have shot here before, but every time I come back I see the place a little differently.

Readers Shoot Back: Vivian Chung

13 May

Dontcha hate it when your bride-and-groom portrait gets photo-bombed?

Okay, maybe not if it's by a Beluga whale. And for Vancouver wedding photographer (and Strobist reader) Vivian Chung, this well-planned cameo was no accident.

Complicating things, she only had a little time—and a key technical restriction—to make this shot.

Smartphone camera review: Blackberry’s back with the Z10

21 Apr

BlackBerryZ10.jpg

BlackBerry, the phone maker formerly known as Research in Motion, has a lot riding on its newest smartphone, Z10. It’s the debut handset for the long-delayed BlackBerry 10, the operating system that the company hopes will mark the beginning of a turnaround after years of losing ground to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms. We take a thorough look at the camera capabilities of the Z10 in our review on connect.dpreview.com.

My Favorite Photography Comic “What the Duck” is Back

18 Apr

My favorite photography comic What the Duck is back as a daily.
whattheduck.net
If you’re unfamiliar with What the Duck it’s authored by Aaron Johnson, whom I interviewed several years ago when I was running my EXIF and Beyond podcast. While I’ve never met Aaron I consider him a friend as he’s done such a great job adding to the sense of community amongst photographers with his wit, humor and creativity.

If you’d like to support Aaron he’s selling What the Duck plush dolls of his most popular characters at incredibly reasonable prices with some being limited editions. I picked up one of each and gave an extra to my son. They came out great!

I highly recommend visiting WhatTheDuck.net daily now that he’s back and for old time sake here is the recording of my interview with Aaron in February of 2009.

Liu Bolin is Back: ‘Invisible Man’ Artist (Dis)Appears Again

08 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

invisible liu bolin

The master of urban camouflage has returned, this time exhibiting his latest photographic wonders at the Galerie Paris-Beijing – as always, without the aid of Photoshop or any other post-editing processes.

invisible map and family

This time, Liu Bolin slips into in a range of familiarly public contexts, in front of iconic buildings and street graffiti … but now also sometimes with companions, or in strangely commercial settings, blending in with store shelves of stuffed animals, fresh vegetables and cell phones. His art is evolving its message.

invisible costume public spaces

It is worth noting that his intention is not to fully vanish into his surroundings, but, instead, to let them encompass him – the  trompe l’oeil is intentionally incomplete.

invisible camouflage commercial context

He is making visual statements about change, commercialization, and the sublimation of the individual to the role of context and process.

Nikon patents revive the dream of a digital back for film SLRs?

20 Dec

NikonF.png

A patent filed by Nikon in Japan appears to revive the long-held dream of adding a digital sensor to an existing film SLR. The Japanese Engineering Accomplishment blog found the recently published patent that shows a mechanism for mounting and adjusting the position of a digital sensor on a rear door that could be used to replace the conventional film door. However, the patent only covers the mounting of the sensor relative to the film guides – it doesn’t address any of the hurdles that have stood in the way of anyone realizing this long-discussed idea.
