Sony announces new A-mount to E-mount lens adapter with built-in screw drive support

Sony has announced the impending release of the LA-EA5, its newest A-mount to E-mount lens adapter. In addition to changing mounts, the new adapter provides autofocus support for Sony A-mount SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) lenses, SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) lenses, and even non-motorized screw-drive lenses in still shooting modes.

Despite the ability to power non-motorized screw-drive lenses (limited to the a7R IV and a6600, at least for the time being), the LA-EA5 features a compact form factor, thanks to clever internal gear and motor positioning. Sony says the adapter provides ‘full support for focal plane phase-detection autofocus (stills only), wide-area focal phased detection autofocus (stills only), Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals, Real-time Tracking and AF/AE (auto exposure) tracking for SSM/SAM lenses on nine most recently introduced E-mount cameras at up to 11 frames per second depending on the camera model.’ The supported camera models, as of this press release, are as follows:

  • Sony a7R III
  • Sony a7R IV (up to 10 fps)
  • Sony a6100
  • Sony a6400
  • Sony a6600 (up to 11 fps)
  • Sony a9 (up to 10 fps)

Sony Electronics Announces New LA-EA5 Lens Adaptor for A-Mount Lenses

New Adaptor Enables Advanced Autofocus Capabilities When Attaching A-mount Lenses to Latest E-mount Bodies

SAN DIEGO – September 1, 2020 – Today, Sony Electronics Inc. announced the new LA-EA5, a 35mm Full-frame A-mount lens adaptor that allows users to easily pair advanced E-mount camera bodiesi with A-mount lensesi.

Using the new LA-EA5 A-mount adaptor, users can now access the acclaimed autofocus and high-speed shooting capabilities found in Sony’s latest E-mount camera bodiesi with A-mount SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) and SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) lensesii, as well as A-mount lenses that do not have internal focus motors.

Full support is provided for focal plane phase-detection AFiii, wide-area focal phase-detection AFiii coverage, Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals, Real-time Tracking and AF/AEiv (auto exposure) tracking for SSM/SAM lenses on nine most recently introduced E-mount camerasi at up to 11fpsv depending on the camera model. When used with the Alpha 7R IVvi or Alpha 6600vi, for the first time, these capabilities are possible with lenses that do not have internal focus motors, such as the Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA and Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA.

The LA-EA5 combines a compact design, featuring an aperture drive unit and a newly developed compact AF drive unit. To ensure comfortable operation when used on an E-mount camera body, the new adaptor’s diameter matches that of the A-mount, perfectly aligning with the edges of the mount. The LA-EA5 allows easy operation on full-frame E-mount bodies, even when a vertical grip is attached to the camera body.

i. As of Sept. 2020, focal plane phase-detection AF is supported for SSM/SAM lenses on the Alpha 7 III, Alpha 7R III, Alpha 7R IV, Alpha 6100, Alpha 6400, Alpha 6600, Alpha 9, Alpha 9 II, and Alpha 7S III. Focal plane phase-detection is supported for lenses that do not have internal focus motors on the Alpha 7R IV and Alpha 6600.

ii. STF lenses are manual focus only. Teleconverters are not supported.

iii. Autofocus is not available during movie recording.

Phase One announces $13K 90mm F5.6 lens for its XT Camera System

Phase One has announced the release of the Rodenstock 90mm F5.6 lens, the latest in its growing collection of glass for its XT Camera Systems.

One of the stand-out features of the XT-HR Digaron-W 90mm F5.6 is its 120mm image circle, which is large enough to account for the 24mm of shift the XT Camera System offers on both the X- and Y-axes for correcting perspective distortion.

The lens, which Phase One suggests is designed with landscape and architectural photography in mind, features an aperture range of F5.6-F22, uses an electro-magnetical shutter (1/1000th-60 min) rated for over 500,000 actuations, has a 72mm front filter thread and uses a five-blade aperture diaphragm. It measures in at 160mm (6.3”) long, 107mm (4.2”) wide and 90mm (3.5”) in diameter, with a weight of 1,200g (2.65lbs).

The MSRP of the Rodenstock XT-HR Digaron-W 90mm F5.6 is $ 12,990. It’s available now through authorized Phase One Partners.

Phase One is also teasing another Rodenstock lens, which it says will be over 100mm (<40-degree angle of view) and will be announced by the end of the year. Phase One says ‘several [optical designs] are under investigation, exploring the best balance of image circle, lens speed, size, weight, and complexity.’

Leica announces 9 Portuguese-made lenses for the US market, bypassing import tariffs

In retaliation for allegedly illegal subsidies from the European Union to Airbus, giving the European airplane manufacturer an unfair advantage over US-based Boeing, the United States levied about $ 7.5B USD in tariffs against the EU. These tariffs, beginning last fall, have been applied to certain EU goods, as approved by the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Included in the new tariff regulations are selected imports from France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, including a 25-percent tariff on ‘agricultural and other products.’ Under the umbrella of ‘other products’ are camera lenses. Leica has long been known for making many of its cameras and lenses in Germany, resulting in US customers being forced to pay more for already expensive Leica lenses.

In order to bypass the US-issued tariff, Leica began work on establishing an alternative production line elsewhere in Europe. Building upon an existing presence in Portugal, Leica will now offer US-based customers nine different M-mount ‘Made in Portugal’ lenses for a reduced cost relative to their tariff-inflated ‘Made in Germany’ equivalents. Customers can still choose to pay extra for the same lenses made in Germany.

The nine lenses Leica is currently manufacturing in Portugal for the US market include the following, with Made in Portugal prices listed first and Made in Germany prices listed second:

• Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH (Black) – $ 4,395 (Portugal) – $ 4,895 (Germany)

• Elmarit-M 28mm F2.8 ASPH (Black) – $ 2,295 – $ 2,595

• Summaron-M 28mm F5.6 (Silver) – $ 2,595 – $ 2,895

• Summicron-M 35mm F2 ASPH (Black) – $ 3,295 – $ 3,695

As you can see, the Made in Portugal lenses do not fully capture the 25 percent tariff levied against the imported German versions, but the relocated production does provide some relief to customers in the US. Presumably Leica incurred considerable cost to their business setting up a new production line. Of this, Leica says, ‘Leica Camera has made a large investment to establish a second production line in reaction to these global economic developments and market requirements.’

Leica continues, assuaging the fears of customers that Made in Portugal lenses will be inferior products, ‘With this new production line at Leica Camera’s state-of-the-art facility in Portugal, Leica has decided to offer USA consumers a choice to buy a selection of some of the most popular and essential Leica M-Lenses, stringent to the same quality and standards expected from Leica as our German-made products, Made in Portugal, at a much lower price than their Made in Germany counterparts. The price differential is a direct result of tariffs, and in no way indicative of quality standards.’

The nine lenses Made in Portugal lenses Leica has announced will be released in staggered groups. The trio of Leica Summilux-M 50mm F1.4 ASPH lenses will be available this month. In September, the Leica Summicron-M 35mm F2 primes and the Summaron-M 28mm F5.6 will begin shipping. Finally, this December, the final three lenses, the Summicron-M 28mm F2, Summicron-M 50mm F2 and Elmarit-M 28mm F2.8, will become available.

Prospective customers can order any of the nine Portuguese-built lenses from US-based Leica stores, including Leica Store Miami.

Meyer Optik Görlitz announces its new Lydith 30mm F3.5 II lens for full-frame, APS-C mounts

Meyer Optik Görlitz is back at it again with the release of a new prime, the Lydith 30mm F3.5 II. While it bears the same name as its predecessor, which was released under the previous owners of the Meyer Optik Görlitz brand via Kickstarter back in 2017, this new version features an entirely new optical design and construction.

Like its predecessor, this mark II version is based on the original Lydith lens, released back in 1964. OPC Optics, the new owners of the Meyer Optik Görlitz brand, doesn’t share the exact optical construction, but if it’s true to the original 1964 lens, it will feature five elements in five groups.

The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 15cm (6in), features a stepless aperture (F3.5–16) and has a 52mm front filter thread. It comes in a variety of full-frame and APS-C lens mounts, including Canon EF, Fuji X, Leica L, Leica M, M42, MFT, Nikon F, Pentax K and Sony E.

PhotoPlus announces it’s going digital as it cancels its in-person expo this year

PhotoPlus announced this morning it is canceling its in-person event, opting instead to host its annual photo conference online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PhotoPlus 2020 was originally set to take place at the Javits Center in New York City from October 22–24. Despite numerous other photo conferences being canceled, PhotoPlus insisted the in-person event was still taking place, until today. In a press release, event director Joseph Kowalsky said:

‘The difficult decision was made after consulting our community partners and supporters and closely monitoring the ongoing progression of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.’

To replace the in-person event, PhotoPlus announced PhotoPlus+, which will be an ‘online experience and community bringing together visual storytellers with the tools and services they need to create.’ The event is designed to be a broader event, with product showcases, live demos, gear launches, networking events and more taking place starting November 1, 2020.

Zhiyun announces Crane 2S gimbal, promising improved speed and precision

Zhiyun has announced a new handheld gimbal, the Crane 2S. While many modern cameras and lenses offer good stabilization performance, amateurs and professionals alike still flock to gimbals for even more stable handheld video. The Crane 2S includes numerous improvements over the Crane 2.

The Zhiyun Crane 2S is stronger than its predecessor and can hold video rigs such as the Black Magic BMPCC 6K, Panasonic S1H, Sony A9, Nikon D850 or Canon EOS 1DX Mark II. Further, the latest version of the Crane 2S’s Instune Algorithm has been refined to deliver quick and smooth gimbal performance.

In terms of setup speed, the Crane 2S features a brand new FlexMount System. This system simplifies the setup process while also ensuring that your gear is secure. The system incorporates a double safety mechanism and has a user-adjustable safety lock. If you want to record vertical video, such as for social media needs, the Crane 2S comes with a vertical quick release mount and safety knob.

Additional features of the gimbal’s design include an upgraded axis locking mechanism, dubbed Axis Locking Mechanism 2.0, guaranteeing ‘zero swinging of the gimbal during traveling or storage.’ To keep the Crane 2S light and strong, the handle is constructed of carbon fiber. The Crane 2S uses 3 removable Li-ion batteries, delivering a total run time of 12 hours.

The Crane 2S includes six gimbal modes: Pan Following, Locking, Following, Full-Range POV, Vortex and Go mode. The gimbal also includes special modes for aiding in the creation of panoramas, timelapse, motionlapse and long exposure timelapse.

The Crane 2S supports digital and manual focus control via a built-in focus wheel on the gimbal itself. The gimbal includes a new 0.96″ OLED display, allowing easy control of important settings and simple menu navigation. The TransMount system also allows for the use of various accessories, such as quick setup kits, a monopod, servo zoom and focus motors and more.

Vazen announces an $8,000 85mm T2.8 1.8x anamorphic lens for PL, EF mount cameras

Chinese cinema lens manufacturer Vazen has announced the release of their new 85mm T2.8 1.8x Anamorphic lens for PL and EF mount camera systems.

The 85mm T2.8 1.8x Anamorphic lens is the first of a new ‘LF’ lineup designed for large-format cinema cameras, such as the RED Monstro, Alexa LF, Kinefinity Mavo LF and Z-Cam E2-F8.

The lens weighs just 1.5kg (3.3lbs) and measures only 17.5cm (6.9”), making it ‘the world’s lightest and smallest 1.8x anamorphic lens for full-frame cameras.’ It features an 86mm front filter thread, a front diameter of 95mm for mounting matte boxes to, 0.8 mod cine gears for follow focus systems and a minimum focusing distance of 9.6cm (3.8”).

Vazen says the anamorphic lens ‘delivers a buttery smooth oval bokeh, signature blue, but not oversaturated, horizontal flare and the widescreen cinematic look.’ When paired with 4:3 sensors, the lens yields a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Below is a video preview of the lens by Expressway Cinema Rentals:

The lens is currently available to order from the Vazen website and authorized Vazen retailers for $ 8,000. The first units will start shipping out in ‘late August.’

Vazen says it also has two other lenses in the works: a 55mm and a 105mm. These two lenses are expected to be released in ‘late 2020/early 2021’ and will eventually be sold as a three-lens set with the 85mm T2.8 anamorphic lens.

Breakthrough Photography announces more than 20 drop-in filters for Canon’s EF-RF adapter

San Francisco-based Breakthrough Photography has announced the first third-party drop-in filters for Canon’s EF-RF drop-in filter mount. This filter mount allows users to adapt EF or EF-S lenses to EOS R series mirrorless cameras with a dedicated space for A-type drop-in filters.

Since the EF-EOS R drop-in filter mount adapter first launched, users have been limited to Canon’s own circular polarizing (CPL) filter or variable neutral density (ND) filter. With Breakthrough Photography’s new line of compatible drop-in filters, users will have access to more than 20 different X2 and X4 filters.

The design of Breakthrough Photography’s new drop-in filters includes a rubberized grip to make it easier to put the filter in and remove it from the adapter. For filters with adjustment, there is a large ridged adjustment wheel. Each drop-in filter is also color-coded to make filters identifiable with a quick glance, which will be particularly useful for photographers who purchase one of Breakthrough’s available filter kits, such as the Essential X2, Essential X4 or Complete B&W filter kits.

Before delving into specific available filters, let’s consider the difference between Breakthrough’s X2 and X4 filters. Looking at the X2 CPL versus the X4 CPL, the latter filter has an average light transmission of 50.64% whereas the former has an average light transmission of 42.44%. According to Breakthrough Photography, the X4 CPL ‘moderately outperforms’ the Canon drop-in CPL filter, whereas the X2 CPL has ‘slightly less’ light transmission than the Canon filter. In terms of color cast, the X4 CPL ‘moderately outperforms’ the Canon filter.

The X2 ND filters and X4 ND filters don’t have a direct Canon competitor because Canon offers a variable ND filter rather than a series of solid drop-in ND filters. With that said, Breakthrough Photography claims that the X4 ND outperforms ‘industry-leading manufacturers such as Singh-Ray and B+W and Lee’ due in part to neutral color transmission.

Canon’s EF-EOS R drop-in filter mount includes a 1.5-9 stop variable ND filter. In addition to solid ND filters in 3, 6, 10, 15 and 20 stop strengths, Breakthrough’s new drop-in filter line includes a pair of variable ND filters. The first, VND-R, is adjustable from 2 to 11 stops. There is also a stronger Dark VND-R, allowing adjustment from 10 to 16 stops of ND strength. Breakthrough states that the VND-R and Dark VND-R drop-in filters eliminate the ‘X’ pattern sometimes seen on VND filters with wide-angle lenses. The Canon drop-in VND is an excellent filter but Breakthrough states that their filters outperform it. You can view a transmission percentage comparison below.

There are four CPL filters in the line aimed at black and white photography: Red, orange, yellow and green. They are available in a bundled set.

Rounding out the series of drop-in filters are Night Sky, infrared 720nm and a pair of clear filters. Digital cameras, such as the EOS R, RP, R5 and R6, include a permanent IR-cut filter over the image sensor. With the IR filter, some residual light can reach the sensor and show the scene in a way different from how it appears in the visible light spectrum. The Night Sky filter is designed to reduce light pollution and show night scenes with color neutrality.

Earlier this year, Olympus made news with the reveal that it will be selling off its camera division, yet it seems that the company plans to go full steam ahead (at least for now).

Because Olympus has just unveiled its latest Micro Four Thirds camera model, the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, a compact, low-cost, travel-ready option for entry-level photographers and successor to the well-received OM-D E-M10 Mark III.

Olympus cameras are known for their small size and limited weight, thanks to the compact dimensions of a Four Thirds sensor. This makes Olympus models a favorite of travel and street photographers, especially when you factor in the size of the lenses (which are some of the most compact options on the market, and will feel positively dainty in your hands).

But the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV takes portability to a new level, coming in at just 0.85 lbs (0.385 kg), which is the lightest of any Olympus mirrorless model to date. It’s perfect for anyone looking to shave off weight from their camera bag, and stays featherlight even when combined with some of Olympus’s longer zoom lenses.

The main drawback to a Micro Four Thirds system is limited resolution, which is why the OM-D E-M10 Mark III only offered a 16 MP sensor. But Olympus has finally decided to give the Mark IV a megapixel boost, up to 20 MP for added detail, which increases both cropping capabilities and printing possibilities, though you should also expect a potential hit to high ISO performance and dynamic range.

Personally, I’d like to see a 24 MP MFT sensor, but this still isn’t a spec offered by Olympus’s higher-end models, so I doubt we’ll see it on a camera like the OM-D E-M10 anytime soon. Plus, 20 MP really is enough for most purposes, including relatively large prints, so there’s not really much worth complaining about.

Moving along, Olympus offers the best in-body image stabilization in the business, which is why you can expect up to 4.5 stops of IBIS on an entry-level model like the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV. This will allow for tack-sharp images at shutter speeds far beyond what would normally be considered possible, as well as smooth video recording (and did I mention that the camera offers 4K?).

As for additional noteworthy specs, the OM-D E-M10 promises improved autofocus over the E-M10 Mark III, thanks to upgraded tracking algorithms, as well as 8.7 fps continuous shooting speeds; also relevant is an interesting flip-down LCD design, which allows you to see previews of images and footage from in front of the camera, but by tilting the LCD below the camera.

Oh, and you get Olympus’s now-standard electronic viewfinder resolution, at 2.36M dots. I didn’t expect anything better (there are only so many upgrades you can make to a camera at a sub-$ 1000 USD price), but Olympus’s EVF game is frustratingly limited, even on its higher-end models, and I’d ideally like to see a resolution boost here.

Sigma announces 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art for E-mount and L-mount

Sigma has launched its 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art, a fast portrait prime for Sony E and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma L-mount. The lens features 15 elements, including one aspherical and five SLD (special low dispersion). It has 11 aperture blades and its focus unit is driven by a high-speed stepping motor. The minimum focus distance of the 85mm F1.4 is 0.85m (34″) and the maximum magnification is 0.12x.

The lens’ aperture ring has a ‘click switch’, allowing users to choose between ‘clicky’ and smooth rotation, as well as a ‘lock switch’ to prevent accidental operation. As one would expect from a modern lens in Sigma’s ‘Art’ collection, it’s very well built and weather-sealed. Despite that, the lens weighs just 630 grams (1.4 pounds).

The 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art will go on sale later this month for $ 1199.
