Last month, we were fortunate enough to get a major camera announcement from Sony: the a7C, a compact-yet-full-frame option designed for vloggers, hybrid shooters, and anyone looking to gain top-notch image quality in a smaller body.

But now it’s Fujifilm’s turn to offer a camera guaranteed to impress vloggers, hybrid shooters, and more.

Just last week, Fujifilm announced the X-S10, an APS-C mirrorless model that combines a compact design with standard Fujifilm performance, while also sporting impressive video capabilities, continuous shooting speeds, and in-body image stabilization.

The X-S10 will feature a 26.1-megapixel X-Trans sensor, which is in line with Fujifilm’s current flagship options (the X-T3 and X-T4) and will undoubtedly perform well. You also get a decent viewfinder (2.36M-dot) which, while not quite as high resolution as the new X-T4, should satisfy most photographers.

And the 3” rear LCD is fully articulating, for anyone looking to shoot at awkward angles or do some inconspicuous photography from the hip.

Fujifilm promises lightning-fast autofocus, claiming that the X-S10 is adept at “achieving focus in as fast as 0.02 seconds in some cases, even at -7.0 EV.” And the X-S10 is also “equipped with high-precision Tracking AF for moving subjects and Face-Eye AF function to track a subject’s face and eyes.”

When it comes to continuous shooting speeds, Fujifilm has never been a company to let its customers down. The X-S10 continues this trend, featuring a walloping 20 frames-per-second continuous shooting speed when using the electronic shutter (though this drops to 8 frames per second when working with the mechanical shutter).

And as for image stabilization:

Fujifilm found a way to keep the IBIS down to a reasonable size, stating that the “camera’s IBIS mechanism is approximately 30% smaller in volume and weight than the previous, similar X series model” (here, Fujifilm is referring to the X-T4). This means that Fujifilm was able to successfully slip its IBIS technology into the X-S10, which is a huge deal, especially for photographers who frequently find themselves in low light situations. The handholding boost provided by a bit of IBIS can be the difference between sharp and blurred images.

Finally, we have the X-S10’s video capabilities to consider. While there’s no 4K/60p recording, you do get a respectable 4K/30p. Combine this with the image stabilization and the fully-articulating screen (discussed above) and you have yourself a useful little camera for vloggers and video hobbyists.

So if you’re a vlogger, a hybrid shooter, or simply a photographer looking for a compact mirrorless option, consider the Fujifilm X-S10.

The camera will begin shipping toward the end of November for $ 1000 USD (body only), $ 1400 USD (with an 18-55 f/2.8-4 kit lens), and $ 1500 USD (with a 16-80mm f/4 kit lens). But you can preorder your copy right here.

Fujifilm announces redesigned Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR

Fujifilm has announced the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR. Updating the older XF 10-24mm, the new lens keeps the optics unchanged, but adds weather-resistance, improved optical image stabilization and a physical aperture ring.

Covering an equivalent focal length range of 15-36mm in full-frame terms, the XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR is a high-quality wide-angle option for Fujifilm X-series shooters. Now featuring weather-resistance, the new lens should be a better companion for the similarly tough X-T4 and X-T3.

Despite the sealing, the new lens is very slightly lighter than its predecessor (by 25g / 0.9oz) and optical image stabilization has been improved by one stop, bringing the total stabilizing effect to a rated 3.5EV (CIPA). When combined with the in-camera IBIS system of the X-T4, total stabilization increases to 6.5EV.

The new lens will be available next month, for an MSRP of $ 999.95 USD.

Fujifilm Introduces FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR lens

Newly updated, ultra-wide angle zoom lens features weather-resistance and more

Valhalla, N.Y., October 15, 2020 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR Lens, the 36th interchangeable lens designed for Fujifilm’s X Series digital camera system. The lens, an update to the current FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS Lens, also features significant design and usability updates.

The new XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR Lens is an ultra-wide zoom lens covering focal lengths from 10mm to 24mm (equivalent to 15mm – 36mm in the 35mm format). “XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR packs many updated features including an f-stop scale on its aperture ring, an Auto-position lock, and a new weather-resistant design,” said Victor Ha, senior director of marketing and product development for FUJIFILM North America Corporation. “We’re confident that this lens will be a top choice among landscape and nature photographers who need an ultra-wide angle zoom lens designed to withstand the elements.”

Additionally, the internal structure has been redesigned to make the focus and zoom rings slimmer, giving the XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR lens a lower overall weight than its predecessor by 25g (.88 oz). Also, Optical Image Stabilization has been extended in the new version by 1 stop, bringing the total stabilization effect of the new lens to 3.5 stops.
The new lens utilizes the same optical design from the original XF10-24mm OIS Lens to provide similar image-resolving performance and also has a maximum aperture of F4.0 across the zoom lens’ entire focal length range.

Main product features

A new, weather-resistant design and usability updates

  • Updated aperture ring with f-stop scale and Auto-position lock
    The aperture ring of the new XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR lens has been updated with an f- stop scale to allow photographers to visually check what aperture the lens is set to, eliminating the need to check through the camera’s EVF or LCD Display. The ring also features an Auto-position lock, similar to that found on Fujifilm’s GF lenses, which is designed to prevent unexpected aperture ring movements, and ultimately ensure the photographer’s shooting efficiency.
  • Added weather-resistance features
    This new lens is both dust and moisture resistant, is able to operate in temperatures as low as 14°F (-10° C) and weighs 0.88 ounces (25 grams) less than the previous model, despite the addition of the weather resistant features.
  • Improved optical image stabilization
    A new, sophisticated gyro sensor used in this lens improves image stabilization by 1.0 stop from the previous model, to 3.5 stops. When used with a new X Series camera, like FUJIFILM X-T4, the lens and camera work together to achieve approximately 6.5 stops of 5-axis image stabilization.

Optical design that delivers advanced image resolving performance

  • The new lens consists of 14 lens elements, including four aspherical elements and four extra-low dispersion elements, in 10 groups. The aspherical elements are designed to minimize spherical aberration, field curvature and distortion, while the extra-low dispersion elements are designed to correct chromatic aberration, delivering crisp, edge- to-edge sharpness. Despite its compact form factor, the lens can maintain the maximum aperture of F4.0 across its focal length range from the ultra-wideangle 10mm to wide- angle 24mm (equivalent to 15mm – 36mm in the 35mm format), while still allowing users to keep a constant f-stop value at any focal length.
  • The front lens element is carefully coated to minimize ghosting, which tends to occur with the extremely concave elements normally found on an ultra-wide angle zoom lens, to give a high level of image sharpness and clarity.
  • With a minimum working distance of just 24cm (9.5in), the lens is also suitable for macro-style photography. Use the lens to close in on a subject while also taking in the background at the same time, thereby creating powerful images that take maximum advantage of the available ultra-wideangle focal lengths.

Fast and near-silent autofocus (AF)

  • The use of lightweight focusing elements and a high-precision motor allows for fast and near-silent AF, even when using it with an X Series cameras’ Face / Eye AF functions.

The new FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS Lens is expected to be available in the U.S. and Canada markets commencing November 2020. Pricing for the lens will be at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $ 999.95 USD and $ 1,349.99 CAD.

Adobe announces Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2021

Adobe has announced Photoshop Elements 2021 and Premiere Elements 2021. The applications are designed to provide powerful tools in a simple, easy-to-use interface. Adobe’s Sensei AI technology is also prevalent throughout both apps, delivering features such as adding motion to static images, fine-tuning the position of a person’s face, improving low-light video quality and more.

Looking first at Photoshop Elements 2021, there are quite a few new features. In addition to being able to transform a static image into moving photos with 2D and 3D motion using only a single click, users will be able to fine-tune face tilt and add quotes or personalized messages to images with templates.

Further, the existing Guided Edits feature has been updated with new edits, bringing the available total up to 58. When using a Guided Edit, the Photoshop Elements guides you step-by-step through different common editing situations and allows you to learn how to get the desired results. New Guided Edits include customized duotone effects; AI-powered landscape photo enhancement (including sky replacement, haze removal and object removal); and step-by-step help for moving, scaling and duplicating objects.

In Adobe Premiere Elements 2021, users will be treated to GPU accelerated performance, resulting in faster high-quality playback of effects and improved performance when cropping video.

In addition to improved performance, there is a new Select Object feature. This allows you to select a specific object or area in your video and apply an effect that tracks across the entire video. If you want to add music to your videos, Adobe has added an additional 21 new music tracks you can select.

In addition to the new Guided Edits for Photoshop Elements 2021, Premiere Elements 2021 includes a pair of new Guided Edits: Double Exposure and Animated Matte Overlays.

In both Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, users will be able to set up automatic back-up for their entire catalog structure, including albums, keyword tags, people, places, events and more. Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2021 will each be available in the fourth quarter of this year for $ 99 USD, or you can purchase a bundle of the two applications for $ 149. Existing owners can upgrade individual apps for $ 79.99 or the two-app bundle for $ 119.99.

In order to run the apps on Windows, you must use Microsoft Windows 10 version 1903 or later. On Mac, macOS 10.14, 10.15 and macOS 11 are supported. For both Windows and macOS, Adobe recommends 8GB of RAM for editing photos, 16GB for editing Full HD video and 32GB or more for editing 4K video.

Freefly Systems announces Astro quadcopter, hints at new 4K camera

Freefly Systems recently introduced the Astro, a quadcopter capable of carrying a two-pound payload on a 3-axis gimbal for up to 30 minutes. While the company is following in the footsteps of fellow American manufacturer, Skydio, by primarily marketing its latest offering to the public sector and enterprise, it’s worth noting that the Astro allows you to capture 61MP aerial photos with the Sony a7R IV camera.

‘My priority with my drones is being able to shoot good landscapes and cityscapes. Being able to fly my a7R IV and a7S III will be huge,’ says Drew Armstrong, a professional remote pilot and realtor. ‘I had a (DJI) M600 I was using with my Sony a 7R II. It worked but being able to adjust exposure while in the air was very difficult. I have also flown the M600 with the aerial specific package for the Phase One camera. That is a sweet ($ 50,000+ USD) setup,’ he adds.

The Astro starts at $ 7,995 for the standalone frame. The Base Kit includes a hard case, battery pair, charger, and remote for $ 9,995. The High Res Mapping configuration which includes everything in the Base Kit plus the Sony a7R IV payload retails for $ 14,995. For comparison’s sake, the DJI Inspire 2 kit equipped with a Zenmuse X7 camera starts at $ 10,995 – but you’ll only get 24MP photos. Freefly’s Alta series of drones, built for high-end cinematography and industrial work, start at $ 17,495.

The Astro is foldable and is being touted as ‘4K in your backpack.’ This is a bit curious. Sony’s a7R IV can record 4K video in full-frame but it’s not the best camera for obtaining crisp, clear footage. ‘Yes, for sure we want to support a7S III. We can mount and fly it, just uncertain as to whether Sony will allow us to have access to full camera controls just yet,’ Freefly’s CEO, Tabb Firchau, tells DPReview.

When asked if there were plans to make other cameras compatible with the system, Firchau revealed ‘yes, we will be supporting a variety of other cameras over time. [It] is set up to be modular and easy to incorporate new cameras…including our first camera [for the Astro] ‘Wave’ that we are launching on Wednesday.’

The launch event for Wave will be taking place via livestream on Wednesday, October 7th, at 10:00 am PST. The Astro is currently available for pre-order and they plan on shipping out units in Q4.

Dell announces $5K 31.5-inch UltraSharp HDR display with 2K mini-LED dimming zones, two other monitors

Dell has announced three new monitors, including a new 4K (3840 x 2160, 16:9) 31.5″ UltraSharp HDR PremierColor display with a 2,000-zone mini-LED array and built-in color calibrator.

The Dell UP3221Q is the first display with 2,000 mini-LED direct backlit dimming zones, beating out both the Asus ProArt PA32UCX (1,152 zones) and Apple’s Pro XDR Display (576 zones). The IPS display is VESA certified for DisplayHDR 1000, has a maximum brightness of 1,000 cd/m2, a 60Hz refresh rate, a claimed HDR contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and has a 178-degree viewing angle.

As for color, the display covers 99.8% of DCI-P3, 93% of Adobe RGB and 83% of BT.2020. To ensure colors stay accurate, the UP3221Q features a built-in Calman Powered colorimeter that can calibrate itself without the need for a PC. Should you choose to use an external colorimeter, you can do so as well with a USB-A port on the bottom of the display.

Additional I/O options include two Thunderbolt 3 ports (only one supports daisy-chaining other Thunderbolt 3 products), two HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2) ports, a DisplayPort 1.4 (HDCP 2.2) port and two USB 3.2 Gen 1/2 ports.

The 31.5-inch UltraSharp HDR PremierColor display is set to go on sale November 5 for $ 5,000.

Dell UltraSharp 24 USB-C Hub monitor (model U2421E)

Dell has also released the UltraSharp 24 USB-C Hub monitor (model U2421E), a 24″ WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200 pixel) monitor that’s the first to feature Dell’s ComfortView Plus technology — a hardware-based solution that reduces blue light output of the display while maintaining color accuracy. The U2421E display is available starting today for $ 450.

Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved USB-C Hub Monitor (model U3421WE)

Last up is the Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved USB-C Hub Monitor (model U3421WE). Featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio, the 3,440 x 1,440 pixel screen offers 99% sRGB coverage, 99% Rec.709 coverage and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. It supports USB-C connectivity with 90W Power Delivery (PD) and has a slew of I/O ports for connecting multiple computers and accessories at once. The U3421WE display is set to ship October 21 for $ 800.

Cosina announces new VM-mount Voigtlander Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II VM lens

Cosina has announced (translated) the release of its new Voigtlander Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II VM lens, an updated version of its predecessor, which was released back in June 2013.

The second-generation lens features an entirely redesigned optics system and a more compact body to match. It’s constructed of eight elements in seven groups, has an aperture range of F1.5-F16, uses a 12-blade aperture diaphragm and has a minimum focusing distance of 70cm (27.5”). The lens measures in at just 55mm (2.17”) diameter and 37mm (1.5”) in length.

The lens is constructed almost entirely of metal, with knurled rings for manually adjusting both the aperture and focus. Interestingly, Cosina is offering the lens in two different versions: a multi-coating version (MC) and a single-coating version (SC). In its own words, Cosina says the MC version ‘aims to reproduce colors as neutral as possible’ while the single coating ‘reproduces classical colors.’

Cosina is offering the lens in black and silver versions constructed of aluminum, while a more premium model constructed of nickel-plated and black-painted brass is also available.

All versions of the Voigtlander Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II VM lens use a bayonet VM mount that can be used with Vessa and M-mount cameras (not including the Bessa L and R). The Japan launch date is October 22 for all models and pricing is listed at ¥100,000 (~$ 950) for the aluminum models and ¥115,000 (~$ 1,100) for the brass model. Currently, no information on availability outside of Japan is mentioned.

Astropad announces Luna Display for Windows, turning your iPad into a wireless display for your PC

Astropad successfully funded Luna Display for Mac on Kickstarter in late 2019. The company is back with another project, Luna Display for Windows. The new project was fully funded in its first hour on Kickstarter. Luna Display for Windows allows iPad owners to turn their Apple device into a wireless PC display.

Astropad states that Luna Display for Windows is the only hardware solution available to turn any modern iPad into a wireless second display for a PC or Mac. You can connect your iPad via Wi-Fi or with a wired connection. For a physical connection, you can select between USB-C or HDMI Luna Display units. Astropad promises ‘lag-free lightning-fast speeds’ and compatibility with any Windows or Mac application

Luna Display for Windows is fully compatible with external keyboard and mouse peripherals, full iPad touch gestures and supports Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity. Astropad promises low latency and a ‘crystal clear’ display.

When working on a single display, especially a smaller notebook display, it can be difficult to fit your entire workspace. With a second display, you can instantly and easily expand your workspace, allowing additional flexibility when working. If you don’t need a second display but would like to be untethered from a desktop computer, you can use Luna Display wirelessly to work on your iPad anywhere you can connect to your Wi-Fi network, such as in a more comfortable room in your home or maybe even outside.

In order to ensure a low-latency and clear wireless image, Luna leverages its own custom video compression technology, LIQUID. The rendering system adjusts in real-time to prevailing network conditions to ensure fast performance. Luna Display promises latency as low as 16 milliseconds, which is considerably faster than the 204ms of Windows Connect and 64ms performance when using Apple’s Airplay technology. Further, LIQUID uses GPU acceleration when available to ensure stable performance.

Luna Display requires the use of a small device, which you can plug into an HDMI port (Windows compatibility only) or USB-C (compatible with Windows and Mac). The device’s size varies slightly with the selected port type, but in either case, it weighs a little over an ounce.

Once your Luna Display is inserted into your computer, you will need to open a dedicated Luna Display app on your computer and your iPad. As soon as the applications are running, you’re good to go.

Luna Display for Windows requires Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit, Build 1809 or later. It requires an Intel or AMD processor with 64-bit support that is 2 GHz or faster. As for RAM, Luna Display requires at least 4 GB. Luna Display for Windows is compatible with Intel HD Graphics 520, AMD Radeon RX Vega 3, NVIDIA GeForce 820m or later; or an equivalent DirectX 11 compatible GPU. On the iPad side of the equation, nearly any iPad will work. Luna Display is compatible with iPad Mini 2 (2013 or later), iPad Pro (2016 or later), iPad 5th generation (2017 or later) and iPad Air (2013 or later). Your iPad must be running iOS 9.1 or later and 32-bit devices are not supported.

Tamron announces a compact $549 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 for Sony E mount cameras

Tamron has announced the release of the 70–300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD, a lens deemed as ‘the world’s smallest and lightest telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.’

The lens is constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups, including a low dispersion element for minimizing aberrations. Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s Rapid Extra-Silent Stepping Drive (RXD) motor technology.

Other specifications include an aperture range of F4.5 (at 70mm) to F32 (at 300mm), a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and a minimum focusing distance of 80cm (31.5”) on the wide end and 150cm (59.1”) on the tele end. Tamron says the lens is moisture-resistant thanks to an array of seals in ‘critical locations’ and its compact design measures in at just 14.7cm (5.8”) long, 77mm (3”) diameter and weighs only 545g (19.2oz).

The lens is expected to retail go on sale starting October 29 for $ 549, but Tamron notes the complexities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could change that date.

September 24, 2020, Commack, New York – Tamron announces the launch of the 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD (Model A047), a telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. Canon announces the EOS C70, a Cinema EOS camera in a mirrorless body

Canon has announced the EOS C70, a digital cinema camera with a body that resembles a mirrorless stills camera. Notably, the C70 uses Canon’s RF lens mount, making it the first Cinema EOS camera to adopt the company’s newest lens system.

The EOS C70 features a Super35 sensor using Canon’s next-generation Dual Gain Output (DGO) technology. The DGO sensor reads each pixel at two different gain levels, with one prioritizing saturation and highlight protection and the other suppressing noise in the shadows.

When combined, Canon claims the camera can deliver 16+ stops of dynamic range at up to DCI 4K/60p or 2K/120p (using a Super16 crop). It can also capture 4K/120p and 2K/180p without extended dynamic range. Recording choices include both All-I and intra-frame options using Canon’s XF-AVC or MP4 (H.265) codecs.

Other features that should appeal to video shooters include dual-pixel autofocus, a motorized 10-stop ND filter, C-Log2/C-Log3, PQ and HLG gamma for HDR, two mini XLR mic inputs, thirteen customizable buttons, and custom in-camera LUTs.

An air intake system provides cooling, allowing the camera to record for extended periods. The cooling system is outside the sealed part of the camera to prevent dust or moisture from reaching the electronics.

The camera features a 3.5-inch 2.76M-dot rear LCD but not an electronic viewfinder. Presumably, Canon expects many Cinema EOS users to put the camera in a rig with their preferred EVF or external monitor.

Alongside the camera, Canon also announced the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x, which allows users to attach EF-mount lenses to the C70. Unlike Canon’s existing EF to EOS R adapters, the EF-EOS R 0.71x is an optical adapter that works like a speed booster, making it possible to use EF lenses on the smaller Super35 sensor at their intended focal lengths while increasing lens speed by one stop.

The EOS C70 will be available in November for $ 5499. The EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter will follow in December for $ 599.

The unique design of the EOS C70 camera puts a significant emphasis on operational convenience for the end-user. The small form-factor, weighing only 2.6lbs., allows the camera to be easily handheld and dramatically enhances a videographer’s mobility, providing a seamless bridge between the EOS and Cinema EOS families for cinematic applications. Cleverly designed, the camera features a slim, motorized ND filter unit – having a mere 6mm depth – that is built into the short flange back of the RF mount. The motorized 10-stop ND filter provides users with the flexibility to control exposure while keeping the desired depth-of-field and capturing images that feature the desired level of bokeh. The camera features Canon’s innovative and next-generation Super 35mm DGO Sensor that further extends the high dynamic range and lowers noise levels by reading out each photodiode with two different gains. One gain prioritizes saturation – protecting detail in highlight areas – while the other suppresses noise in the shadows. The result is an image with up to 16-plus stops of total dynamic range, clean, rich shadows, and vibrant highlights in up to 4K/ 60p or 2K/120p in Super16mm Crop mode. The EOS C70 camera also features Canon’s recently developed DIGIC DV7 image processor that collects the extensive information captured from the DGO sensor and processes it into exceptional HDR imagery while offering choices between Canon Log 2 and 3, in addition to PQ and HLG gamma functionality. The C70 camera can also record 4K DCI or UHD up to 120fps and 2K DCI or HD up to 180 fps – with an important flexibility in the choice of codecs.

The camera supports XF-AVC format (in variable bit-rate) – both Intra and Long GOP with MXF file format. The intra-frame format compresses the data after analyzing each frame separately, while Long GOP format compresses data at a higher rate, creating an even smaller file size. A secondary choice is Long GOP 10-bit 4:2:2/4:2:0 MP4/HEVC (a next-generation HDR video recording compression standard) with an MP4 file format – a first in the Cinema EOS line.

The camera’s independent air intake system is separated from the electrical systems to protect the sensor from water, sand, and dust. In addition, the camera also features two air outlet vents that allow uninterrupted recording for extended periods of time.

Breakthrough announces first third-party EF to RF Drop-In Filter Adapter

San Francisco-based Breakthrough Filters has announced an all-new EF to RF filter adapter. This is the first EF to RF drop-in filter adapter released not made by Canon.

Breakthrough’s EF to RF Drop-In Filter Adapter is loaded with a variety of hardware improvements. The adapter has an all-metal aluminum alloy construction and includes dust and water resistance. The weather-sealed adapter has rubber gaskets around both the filter and rear mounts. The adapter includes a detachable tripod food and accepts mounting plates for ballheads, arca plates and more. Further, the interior has been blacked out to reduce specular reflections.

In terms of compatibility, Breakthrough states that you can mount your EF lenses to RF mounts on cameras such as the Canon EOS R, R5 and R6 cameras and the RED Komodo. The adapter supports autofocus, image stabilization and EXIF data recording.
