Leica announces three limited-edition Summicron M lenses

Leica has released new versions of three of its existing M lenses, giving users a choice of a silver option of the normal 75mm, and two limited edition lenses to match the green M10-P ‘Safari’. The silver anodized APO-Summicron-M 75mm f/2 ASPH will be a standard production model to give all M users an alternative to the black paint version that is currently available. Leica UK will charge a £200 premium for the silver model though it seems to be the same price as the black version in the USA. The Miami Leica store has this model marked as a limited edition of 300 units worldwide but still lists it as the same price as the black model. That may be a mistake.

The Safari green Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH and APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH lenses will be limited editions, with Leica producing 500 units of the first and 250 of the second. These two lenses join the Summicron-M 50mm f/2 to form a set of three that match the M10-P ‘Safari’ camera that is finished in the same green paint.

Leica says these green models follow in the footsteps of the original Leica M1 which was produced in Olive for the German Armed forces in the early 1960s. Those cameras were all marked ‘Bundeseigentum’ to denote that they were the property of the German government and now fetch a good price as, according to Dutch dealer Schouten, there were only 208 units made. The original M1 Olive cameras only had the standard-issue lenses for the time though, so no matching green paint in those days.

The three new lenses will start shipping at the end of February.

Leica Camera introduces three new M-lens variations

Wetzlar, February 14, 2020. Leica Camera is delighted to present three new lenses for the Leica M-System: the silver anodised APO-Summicron-M 75 f/2 ASPH. as well as two limited editions, the Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. and APO-Summicron-M 90 f/2 ASPH. which both come in an olive-green ‘Safari’ finish. The technical specifications of the three new lenses are identical to those of their serially produced counterparts.

The APO-Summicron-M 75 f/2 ASPH. is known as one of the most high-performing lenses for the Leica M-System and is particularly suitable for portrait photography. The new lens variation features an anodised finish and in contrast to the black-paint variant, the feet markings on the distance scale as well as the focal length engravings are inlaid in red, while all other engravings feature black inlays, emphasising the sophisticated design of the Leica M.

Leica is also releasing two limited editions, the Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. and APO-Summicron-M 90 f/2 ASPH. with a special, olive-green paint finish. Both ‘Safari’-edition lenses feature red-inlaid feet markings on the distance scale and red focal length markings, while all other engravings are inlaid in white, creating a stylish juxtaposition with the olive-green lens.

The exceptionally hard-wearing, olive-green paint has a long-standing tradition at Leica. The first Leica cameras to be treated with this superior-quality enamel finish were designed for military use in 1960. Shortly after, the cameras became widely renowned as robust tools that could withstand even the most extreme conditions and what had started with the Leica M1 ‘Olive’ for the German Armed Forces went on to become an enduring success story. While the Leica M3 and M4 in olive-green were still manufactured exclusively for military use, a growing demand among private customers prompted Leica to release the first market version – the Leica R3 ‘Safari’ – in 1977. This was followed by the M6 TTL ‘Safari’ in 2000, the M8.2 ‘Safari’ in 2008, the M-P (Typ 240) ‘Safari’ of 2015 and, most recently, the M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ in 2019. Today, the olive-green cameras are highly sought-after by collectors and Leica enthusiasts alike.

Aside from the Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2, released in 2019, the new Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. and APO-Summicron-M 90 f/2 ASPH. are the only M lenses to perfectly match the olive-green Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’, making the lenses a desirable addition to any Leica M Camera. Canon announces Rebel T8i with revamped AF and (proper) 4K video

Canon has announced a new DSLR, aimed at ambitious beginners and enthusiasts. The Rebel EOS T8i is Canon’s latest Rebel-series flagship, and packs a pretty impressive set of features, including a new Digic 8 processor, which enables 7 fps continuous shooting and 4K video capture (including 24p). Like the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, the T8i also supports vertical video.

The T8i is built around a 24MP APS-C format CMOS sensor, with Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus. Face and Eye-detection is available in live view and video modes. In viewfinder shooting mode, autofocus is handled by a new 45-point all cross-type AF system, which works in concert with a 220,000-pixel AE sensor to allow ‘iTR’ tracking AF and face detection.

Previously only available in Canon’s higher-end DSLRs, these features make the T8i the most powerful Rebel-series camera yet, at least on paper. Meanwhile, Canon will be hoping that the usual suite of wireless connectivity options, plus a vlogging-friendly vari-angle touchscreen will make it accessible to first-time ILC buyers.

The EOS Rebel T8i will cost $ 749.99 body only, and $ 899.99 in a kit with the EF-S 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM.

Canon announces development of EOS R5 with ‘8K’ video and 20fps shooting

Canon has announced the development of the R5 – a flagship RF-mount mirrorless camera capable of 8K video and 20fps stills shooting. Details are scant, but the new camera is expected to be released at some point this year.

Rumors have been swirling about an upcoming R-series camera for a while, and although we were skeptical about the ‘8K video’ claim at first, it seems that the R5 will, indeed, offer some kind of 8K video capture option.

Canon’s press release is rather non-specific when it comes to details, referring to the ability of photographers ‘to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K video’. As such, it’s possible that for practical purposes, the R5’s main selling point will be 2X oversampled 4K, but we’ll find out soon enough.

To natively sample 8K video (usually defined as 7680 x 4320 pixels) would require a 7680 x 5120 pixel sensor. This being the case, we can make a pretty good guess that effective resolution of the R5 will be ~40MP.

Alongside the R5, Canon is also teasing ‘9 RF lenses’ coming later this year, including a new telezoom – the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM. Samples of the R5, the 100-500mm, and two new RF Extenders (1.3X and 2X) are expected to be shown at the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, later this month.

Canon announces development of the EOS R5 next-generation full-frame mirrorless camera and new RF series lenses

TOKYO, February 13, 2020 — Canon Inc. announced today that the company is currently developing the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera—containing CMOS sensor, image processing, optical and other state-of-the-art technologies the company has cultivated through its long history of camera development. What’s more, during 2020, Canon plans to release a total of 9 RF lenses currently in development. Through the addition of competitive cameras and lenses to its lineup, Canon will continue to strengthen the EOS R System.

The EOS R System enables greater freedom in lens design thanks to a wider lens mount diameter, short back focus and high-speed system for transmitting data between the camera and lens, resulting in an imaging system that delivers higher image quality and greater ease-of-use.

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System to realize high-speed continuous shooting and 8K video recording and expanding the boundaries of visual expression. In addition, it can contribute to more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements and more will help the new camera elevate the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High-image-quality” to a higher level.

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in the company’s EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible such advanced features as high-speed continuous shooting—up to approximately 20 frames per second (FPS) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS using a mechanical shutter—to facilitate shooting of athletes at sporting events and other fast-moving subjects. In addition, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will enable users to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K video, opening up new possibilities for visual expression. What’s more, the EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with a high-performance coordinated image stabilization (IS) system that integrates the camera’s in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses. The camera will also feature dual media card slots and will support automatic transfer of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform (to be available from early April 2020).

Alongside the EOS R5, Canon is also developing a total of 9 RF lenses scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

Samsung announces S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra smartphones offering up to 108 megapixels, 100X zoom and 8K video

Samsung took the stage at its Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event to unveil its latest Galaxy smartphone lineup, which includes the Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. The new S20 range offers some pretty incredible pixel-counts, topping out at an eye-popping 108MP, plus 8K video. Meanwhile, you can probably guess at the defining feature of the ‘Galaxy Z Flip’.

Let’s talk about the headline features up front:

  • 1/1.33″ main camera sensor (S20 Ultra)
  • 108MP capture (S20 Ultra)
  • ‘Lossless’ digital zoom thanks to high resolution sensors
  • 100x zoom thanks to 4x optical zoom, 48MP sensor and super-resolution (S20 Ultra)
  • 120Hz refresh rate displays
  • 240Hz touch input for responsive touch interface
  • Capture all camera zooms and modes with one shutter press, choose later

Let’s start by talking about the new S20 lineup.

Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra

Samsung’s S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra smartphones all vary in size and specifications, with increasing screen sizes and capabilities, respectively.

Before diving into the differences though, let’s take a look at what all of the devices share. The first thing you’ll notice is the familiar design, with the S20 lineup constructed of glass on the front and back with an aluminum alloy metal band around the edges. Aside from a slight bump up in weight and height compared to the S10 lineup, the only major visual difference from the device’s respective predecessors is a new camera bump that’s now rectangular in design.

Each of the new devices features a 120Hz OLED display, currently putting them at the front of the pack in terms of refresh rates (for OLEDs, at least). The S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra all have the same resolution (3200×1440 pixels), but the screen sizes across the devices do differ: 6.2-inches, 6.7-inches and 6.92-inches, respectively.

Moving onto the cameras, the S20 devices drop the dual-front-facing camera the S10 series had and opts for a single 10-megapixel camera on the S20 and S20+, while the S20 Ultra gets a ridiculous 40-megapixel front-facing camera. On the back of the devices, you’ll notice each model features increasingly-larger camera units, with more modules available on the larger models. The S20 has a 12-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 64-megapixel 3x telephoto camera.

The S20+ has all of those cameras as well as a time-of-flight (ToF) camera for depth data. As you might expect, the S20 Ultra takes the entire setup to a whole other level; it offers a 108-megapixel main camera with a whopping 1/1.33″ sensor, the second largest sensor size we’ve ever seen in a phone (right behind the 1/1.2″ sensor in the well-respected Nokia 808 41MP camera). The extra pixels allow for ‘lossless’ digital zoom, which is further aided using super-resolution techniques. Also on-board: a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 48-megapixel 4x telephoto (with 10x ‘lossless’ digital zoom and 100x ‘Space Zoom’ thanks to a unique combination of optical and digital zoom and super-resolution), as well as a ToF camera. All of the phones feature 8K video recording.

The S20 models are all IP68 water-resistant, include wireless charging and feature an in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint reader. Oh, and the headphone jack is gone.

The S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra are set to ship in the United States for $ 1000, $ 1,200 and $ 1,400, respectively.

Galaxy Z Flip

The Galaxy Z Flip is a second-generation folding phone from Samsung. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, which opened up side-to-side like a book, the Galaxy Z Flip opens up vertically, similar to clamshell-style phones of yesteryear.

However, instead of a keyboard at the bottom and a screen at the top as was standard nearly a decade ago, the Galaxy Z Flip features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, which folds along the hinge of the phone. What’s interesting is that instead of the plastic being used for the screen, Samsung is instead using an ultra-thin glass—this should help to make the screen much more durable than its predecessor, which quickly gained a bad reputation for scratching easily.

The outside of the device also features a 1.06-inch secondary display that can display the current time, show the battery status, show notifications and even be used as a screen for taking selfies using the exterior camera.

Beneath the screen is an array of components that, as noted by Android Authority, are almost identical to those found inside the Galaxy S10e. Specifically, the phoen is powered by a Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, 8GB of RAM, 256GB UFS 3.0 storage and a 3,300mAh battery (2,000mAh more than the S10e).

The pair of cameras on the rear of the device include a standard 12-megapixel camera and an ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera, while the front-facing selfie camera is 10-megapixels. The device also features 15W wired charging, 9W wireless charging and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The Galaxy Z Flip will be available in Mirror Purple, Mirror Black and Mirror Gold (in select countries) starting February 14, 2020 for $ 1,380.

Ricoh announces its new ultra-rugged WG-70 camera

Ricoh has announced its latest ultra-rugged compact camera, the WG-70. Nearly identical in design to its predecessors, the compact camera is specifically made for trying environments and features dedicated shooting modes for underwater and macro photography.

At the center of the WG-70 is a 16 Megapixel 1/2.3” backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. In addition to stills, the camera captures 1080p (Full HD) video. The onboard lens features a 28–140mm 35mm-equivalent focal length, has an aperture range of F3.5-F5.5 depending on the focal length and is constructed of 11 elements in 9 groups. In addition to the optical zoom, the camera also offers an additional 7.5x zoom when using the onboard ‘Intelligent Zoom’ feature (which is limited to 7 Megapixel).

Composing and reviewing media is done on the 2.7-inch ‘outdoor-friendly’ LCD display that has an anti-reflective coating. A ring of six LEDs around the lens of the camera offers a unique means of capturing macro images. To make the most of the unique LED array, Ricoh has included a new ‘Digital Microscope’ mode that enlarges the subject being captured. A standard Macro mode is also included, in addition to the underwater shooting mode, which compensates for the color shift that happens when snapping underwater shots.

The WG-70 is waterproof down to 14m (46ft), shockproof from falls up to 1.6m (5ft) and freezeproof down to -10ºC (14ºF). The WG-70 works with Ricoh’s lineup of WG-series mount accessories, which allow you to mount the camera much like you would an action camera.

The Ricoh WG-70 will be available in mid-March at participating retailers for $ 280.

The RICOH WG-70 camera’s back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with approximately 16 effective megapixels and a high-performance imaging engine delivers super-high-resolution still images and HD video clips. It features triple anti-shake protection to prevent blurred images and videos in all applications.

The RICOH WG-70 is waterproof to a depth of 46 feet (14 meters), shockproof against a fall from a height of five feet (1.6 meters) and freeze-proof in temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C). It also comes equipped with an outdoor-friendly LCD monitor with a brightness level that can be instantly adjusted to the lighting level of a shooting situation. The camera is 4.8 inches wide by 2.4 inches high by 1.2 inches deep and weighs approximately 6.8 ounces (including battery and SD memory card).

Fujifilm announces affordable XC 35mm F2 prime lens

Alongside the X-T200, Fujifilm has announced the Fujinon XC 35mm F2 lens. For those of you not familiar with Fujifilm’s lens names, the ‘XC’ denotes the company’s more affordable optics.

The XC 35mm F2 should pair nicely with Fujifilm’s lower-cost models, such as the X-T200 and X-T30

The XC 35mm F2 is essentially a rehoused version of the XF 35mm F2 R WR. It has a plastic mount and less-solid-feeling construction, and features neither an aperture ring nor weather sealing (the ‘R’ and ‘WR’ in the XF version’s name, respectively). However, it does feature the same optics as the XF version, so image quality should be comparable.

The difference is that this brings the XC down to a price of $ 199. The result is a much more affordable 50mm-equivalent lens for newcomers wanting to expand their photography with a prime lens. In this sense, it’s like the ‘nifty fifty’ lenses traditionally available for most DSLR systems, but in a focal length nicely suited to APS-C users.

For those interested in expanding their X-T200 tool kit, the new FUJINON XC35mmF2 lens gives an equivalent to 52mm field of view on 35mm format. Weighing just 130g and measuring 46.5mm in length, this new prime lens has nine elements, including two aspherical lens elements in six groups, which work to produce sharp and crisp images with creamy bokeh. AF operation is quick and near silent thanks to the use of an internal focus system and a stepping motor, which is used to drive the focusing elements quickly and accurately.

Canon announces its new CR-S700R ‘Robotic Camera System’

Canon has introduced the CR-S700R, a ‘Robotic Camera System’ that allows operators to wirelessly zoom, pan, tilt and roll select EOS cameras for composing and capturing still image photography.

The system, which Canon suggests is designed for ‘sports photography and news media,’ pairs with the CR-G100 camera controller and works alongside Canon’s CR-A100 Camera Remote Application to ‘to control multiple cameras from a PC, display live-view images and remotely trigger a camera or simultaneously shoot with multiple cameras.’

No measurements are given, but based on the images, it’s clear this machine is large, as it manages to make an EOS 1-series body and 70–200mm F2.8 lens look small when attached. Canon says the system can follow ‘high-speed subjects and features a turning radius of up to 260mm.’

At the time, the system only supports the 1D X Mark II and 1DX Mark III cameras when used with the following lenses:

  • EF 11–24mm F4L USM
  • EF 16–35mm F2.8L III USM
  • EF 24–70mm F2.8L II USM
  • EF 70–200mm F2.8L IS II USM
  • EF 24–105mm F4L IS II USM
  • EF 100–400mm F4.5–5.6L IS II USM

Based on the sole screenshot of the Camera Remote Application CR-A100 Canon has provided, it appears as though operators will be able to control over a dozen cameras at once, with the ability to edit nearly every setting the camera has to offer. There are even preset buttons, suggesting it’ll be possible to remotely capture multiple pre-composed shots with the click of a button.

While Canon surely expects other use-cases, the CR-S700R looks like the perfect system to use during this year’s 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Remote cameras are consistently used during Olympic events and having the ability to reposition and remotely control every aspect of the camera seems like a no-brainer for sports photographers and news agencies who want to get the best shots possible.

The Robotic Camera System CR-S700R and the Camera Remote Application CR-A100 are scheduled to be available ‘from mid-February 2020,’ according to Canon.

Canon announces Image Connect, a new photographer matching service for the U.S.

In addition to its Robotic Camera System CR-S700R and Photo Culling plugin for Adobe Lightroom Classic, Canon has also announced it will be launching a new photographer matching service in the United States.

The service, called Image Connect, will use Canon’s RAISE photo community platform to connect customers with professional photographers. The process will go as follows, according to Canon:

  • Through the platform, customers can provide basic details for the job, such as event type, location, and date
  • Once photographers are matched with the customer through the platform, customers review photographer profiles and invite those they like to bid on the job
  • Photographers create an offer which allows them to set their own price (rather than adhering to standardized pricing) and allows them to communicate their rates and value to customers
  • Once an offer is accepted, the job is booked through the platform
  • Following the event, images are delivered electronically to the customers through a Canon customer portal

The service will be brand agnostic, so even if you’re not a Canon shooter, you’ll still be able to use the service. The service is expected to go live in a limited number of markets starting in Q1 2020. At the time of launch, the service will be limited to residents of the following states: Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

There’s no word yet on whether Image Connect will be available outside the United States. We have contact Canon for clarification and will update this article accordingly when we hear back.

Tiffen announces ND filter kits for the DJI Mavic Mini drone

When I initially reviewed DJI’s Mavic Mini drone, a week before it was released to the public, one of my first impressions was that there wasn’t any clear way to attach a neutral-density (ND) filter onto the lens of its camera. DJI has always offered up its own branded set of ND filters for every drone or action camera they’ve released. Therefore, it was surprising when they were absent from the accessories section for the Mini.
