Fujifilm announces upcoming firmware updates for X-T3, X-T30 and other models

Fujifilm has announced plans to release future firmware updates for its X-T3 mirrorless camera. The first update to version 3.10 will arrive in mid-December, according to a release from the company published on Wednesday.

The update scheduled for release in mid-December will bring ‘controls for video recording from Gimbal / Drone via USB communications,’ according to Fujifilm, meaning X-T3 owners will be able to use their camera with a drone and gimbal setup that supports the function. This same functionality will also be released for the X-T30 and other models not specified at this time.

The firmware version 3.20 update is scheduled for release in January 2020 and will bring ‘enhanced autofocus’ with better eye AF frame tracking and face-detection performance, as well as improved autofocus when it comes to foreground subjects. Additionally, versiohn 3.20 will add support for saving up to 9,999 images in each folder on the SD card, a dramatic increase from the current 999 limit.

Zeiss announces Radiance Prime lenses with controlled flare effects for cinematographers

Optical manufacturer Zeiss has announced a new set of lenses based on its Supreme Prime range but which are designed to produce attractive flare easily and in a controlled manner. The Zeiss Supreme Radiance Prime lenses will only be available as a set of seven focal lengths and can only be ordered between now and the end of March 2020.

The lenses have been created to enable cinematographers to introduce a controlled amount of flare into their productions without losing optical quality. The company claims the Supreme Radiance lenses will provide consistent effects and won’t compromise contrast or light transmission. A new T*Blue coating has been used to generate the flare in the lenses, which are otherwise exactly the same as the existing Supreme Primes.

The flare from the lenses has a blue tone, and those quoted as having used the lenses talk of a look that is sharp but soft at the same time and highlights the glow. The coating also lends a slightly warmer tone to the footage.

The set of seven lenses will cover focal lengths from 21mm to 100mm, and a wide covering circle means they are suitable for large format sensors. All are compatible with the ZEISS eXtended Data metadata system and Cooke’s i/Technology for recording shooting information on along with each frame to help special effects teams integrating additional content into the picture.

Zeiss hasn’t yet announced a price for the lenses but says they will start shipping April 2020. For more information see the Zeiss website.

Controlled images that exude artistic flair
The ZEISS Supreme Prime Radiance lenses are available as a set of seven focal lengths of between 21 and 100 millimeters, all with a maximum aperture of T1.5. This makes it possible to capture subtle nuances, even in poor light.

“When we spoke to filmmakers and industry experts, we took a close look at the appeal of flares and their unique impact on the atmosphere of a movie,” says Casenave. He describes how ZEISS is responding to users’ needs to integrate flares to ensure greater creative freedom with the lenses: “We didn’t just want to reproduce the effects, but to create tools that would allow this effect to be achieved at any time and in a controlled manner, and so the T* blue coating was born.” The new coating allows users to create flares in the right light without any losses in contrast or transmission – and in the high quality that customers have come to expect from ZEISS.

The versatility of the lenses can be used to create this visual look, which is due to the smooth depth of field and elegant bokeh, thus meeting users’ every artistic wish – from a blockbuster to a high-end commercial or a film d’auteur.

Compact, lightweight full-frame lenses

In addition to their flare behavior, the new lenses offer all the benefits of the ZEISS Supreme Primes. Thanks to their image circle diameter of 46.3 millimeters, they cover the current large-format cinematography sensors and are as such compatible with the latest camera models, such as the Sony Venice, ARRI Alexa LF, and Mini LF and RED Monstro. Moreover, they feature a front diameter of 95 millimeters with consistently positioned focus and aperture rings. They weigh around 1,500 grams on average.

The lenses are equipped with the ZEISS eXtended Data metadata technology launched in 2017, providing frame-by-frame data on lens vignetting and distortion in addition to the standard metadata provided using the Cooke /i technology1 protocol. This simplifies and speeds up workflows, particularly for VFX and Virtual Production.

Limited availability

The ZEISS Supreme Prime Radiance lenses are available to order from announcement until March 31st, 2020. The seven focal lengths – 21 mm T1.5, 25 mm T1.5, 29 mm T1.5, 35 mm T1.5, 50 mm T1.5, 85 mm T1.5 and 100 mm T1.5 – are available exclusively as a set from ZEISS Cinema dealers. The lenses will be delivered from April 2020 after the end of the ordering period.

From November, 9th -16th ,2019, ZEISS will be unveiling its ZEISS Supreme Prime Radiance lenses for the first time before a large audience at the CAMERIMAGE International Film Festival in Toru?, Poland. The short film R&R by Rodrigo Prieto (DOP of movies like The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street and Brokeback Mountain) shot with ZEISS Supreme Prime Radiance lenses, will also be shown at the festival. After CAMERIMAGE, ZEISS will be running a series of events at various rental houses around the world to give cinematographers the chance to try out the new lenses.

Canon Announces the EOS Ra, Its First Mirrorless Astrophotography Camera

Canon eos raCanon has announced its first astrophotography camera since the Canon 60Da, which is also its first-ever mirrorless astrophotography camera:

The Canon EOS Ra.

The EOS Ra isn’t a particularly flashy camera; it’s the Canon EOS R, along with a few special features designed for astrophotographers. But if you’re looking to take photos of the night sky, the Canon EOS Ra may be exactly what you need.

What makes this camera special?

First, Canon has added a special IR filter in front of the sensor, one that promises to increase transmission of the H-alpha wavelength by approximately four times the amount of the standard EOS R. Most cameras include an IR filter that reduces H-alpha wavelength transmission. But the H-alpha wavelength features heavily in celestial phenomena such as diffuse nebulae; the enhanced transmission should make for clearer, sharper images of these astronomical objects.

And second, Canon added enhanced EVF and LCD viewing. You can zoom in to 5x or 30x magnification using either the LCD or the electronic viewfinder, which allows you to focus on celestial objects with increased precision.

Note that the Canon EOS Ra offers all the other features of the EOS R, including a 30.3 MP sensor, the DIGIC 8 processor, continuous shooting at 8 frames per second, and Canon’s amazing Dual Pixel autofocus.

So who should get the Canon EOS Ra? And how does it perform when shooting subjects other than the night sky?

The Canon EOS Ra is designed for astrophotographers, and I recommend you keep it that way. While all the EOS R features are present, the altered IR filter may cause issues when photographing non-celestial subjects. Plus, the EOS Ra has a few hundred dollars added to its price tag, selling for $ 2499 USD compared to the $ 1799 USD Canon EOS R. For non-astrophotographers, purchasing the EOS Ra will be throwing away unnecessary dollars.

But for astrophotographers, the Canon EOS Ra is a fantastic option.

The camera is currently available for preorder and should debut in mid-December 2019.

Leica announces the HG-SCL6 ‘Multi Function Handgrip’ for its SL2 full-frame camera

To coincide with the release of its SL2 camera system, Leica has also released the Multi Function Handgrip HG-SCL6, a longwinded name for the optional SL2 battery grip.

The HG-SCL6 adds a vertical shutter button, dial controls and a second BP-SCL4 battery that should effectively double the battery life of the camera. The grip on the HG-SCL6 matches the profile of the grip onboard the SL2, which should be a dramatic improvement over the grip found on the SL and its battery grip (HG-SCL4).

The grip is currently available to pre-order (Adorama, B&H) for $ 995.

Canon Announces 24P Video in 90D, EOS RP Via Firmware Update

Canon Announces 24PWhen Canon debuted the EOS RP, photographers who also shoot video were intensely frustrated by one feature:

The lack of 24p video recording when shooting HD.

24p is especially important to videographers going for a cinematic look; 24p is a very common choice in movies, and the 24p look is now expected by moviegoers.

While the Canon EOS RP did offer 24p when shooting 4K, Canon customers were still disappointed. For anyone who wished to shoot in the HD arena at 24p, the Canon EOS RP was off-limits.

This trend continued with the Canon 90D, which also lacked 24p, though this time when shooting both 4K and full HD. And the Canon EOS M6 Mark II also missed the 24p feature.

Fortunately, Canon seems to listen to its consumers. On October 8th, the photography giant announced that it would be bringing 24p recording to a series of DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It promised to start with the EOS RP and the Canon 90D, followed by the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, the G5 X Mark II, and the Canon EOS M6 Mark II.

And just last week, Canon delivered. The company released its firmware version 1.4.0 for the Canon EOS RP and its firmware version 1.1.1 for the Canon 90D, allowing both cameras to shoot video at 24p. As the EOS RP already had 24p capabilities when doing 4K video, the firmware update simply expands this into the full HD territory. But the Canon 90D offered no 24p capabilities, and the firmware update has turned this around, giving the DSLR 24p shooting in both full HD recording and 4K recording.

While the G7 X Mark III, G5 X Mark II, and EOS M6 Mark II haven’t yet received their firmware updates, you can be fairly confident that Canon will deliver. Canon has even offered a timeline, promising 24p for the G7 X Mark III and the G5 X Mark II before New Years, and the EOS M6 Mark II in 2020 (hopefully early on!).

Adobe announces Sensei-powered Photoshop Camera app for Android, iOS devices

Today, at Adobe MAX, Adobe announced Photoshop Camera a free AI-powered camera app for Android and iOS devices that will be publicly launched in 2020.

At the core of the camera app is Adobe’s AI technology, Sensei. When taking a photo, Sensei will recognize what the subject matter is and automatically suggest filters to match the content, both in real-time and as a filter after the capture. The filters, which are referred to as ‘lenses’ are curated and created by various ‘well-known artists and influencers,’ but Adobe is also accepting sign-ups for artists interesting in creating custom lenses.

In a blog post announcing the new app, Adobe says:

We built Photoshop Camera as a Sensei-first app on our journey to expand our focus to deliver creative tools, including Photoshop, for everyone. With Photoshop Camera you can capture, edit, and share stunning photos and moments – both natural and creative – using real-time Photoshop-grade magic right from the viewfinder, leaving you free to focus on storytelling with powerful tools and effects.

One of the most impressive features of the Photoshop Camera app is an auto-masking mode that can intelligently select various parts of the images depending on what the particular lens in use is trying to achieve with the subject matter. A few examples include masking out and replacing the sky in an image as well as applying fake bokeh to a shot.

You can sign up for a limited preview version of the app on Adobe’s website. The final version is set for a 2020 release.

RED founder Jim Jannard announces retirement, shuts down Hydrogen phone project

RED founder Jim Jannard, who just celebrated his 70th birthday, has announced that he is retiring, citing health issues simply saying that “it is now time.” He also announced that with his departure from the company the Hydrogen phone project will be shut down:

I have spent the past 45 years building “inventions wrapped in art”.

Just now turning 70 and having a few health issues, it is now time for me to retire.

I will be shutting down the HYDROGEN project, ending a career that has included Oakley, RED Digital Cinema and HYDROGEN. I am very proud to have worked with many great people over the years who have signed on to the vision.

RED Digital Cinema will continue stronger than ever with Jarred, Tommy and Jamin at the controls. Komodo is about to be launched… and the HYDROGEN One will continue to be supported in the future.

I want to thank everyone for the support I have felt over the years…

So the Hydrogen One remains the first and only model ever launched in RED’s Hydrogen smartphone line. When it arrived last year, after several delays, it came with innovative technologies including a ‘4V’ holographic display, but received lukewarm reviews and ultimate could not convince customers to pay a $ 1,295 premium price.

Film makers and photographers had also been looking forward to the launch of an attachable camera module for the device but, like several other planned modules, it never got to see the light of day.

The good news is that existing Hydrogen One users will continue to receive support, at least for the time being, and RED Digital Cinema is still operating with Jarred Land as its president and will hopefully soon release the Komodo camera system which was teased earlier this year.

Irix announces impending release of its new 45mm T1.5 cinema lens

Cine lens manufacturer Irix has announced the impending arrival of the Irix Cine 45mm T1.5, its latest full-frame cinema lens.

This new lens marks the third full-frame cinema lens Irix has made specifically for shooting at up to 8K resolution. Irix says the 45mm T1.5 is ‘based on a completely new [11 elements in 9 groups] optical design which includes four elements made of high refraction glass, one extra-low dispersion lens and one aspherical lens’ and delivers ‘ultra-low’ 0.5-percent distortion.

The nine-blade aperture diaphragm ranges from T1.5 to T22 and the lens features ‘practically no focus breathing,’ according to Irix. Other features include a 95mm front filter thread on the housing of the lens, another 86mm built-in filter thread and a reversible lens hood that’s attached via magnets, which Irix teases will work with ‘future accessories.’

The gears are standardized 0.8 pitch mod cine gears and the lens, which is constructed of a magnesium-aluminum alloy is sealed. Irix doesn’t specify what the lens should be able to handle, other than saying it’s ‘prepared for all weather conditions.’

The Irix Cine 45mm T1.5 will be available in Canon EF, Sony E, MFT and Arri PL mounts. Pricing and availability ‘will be announced soon.’

The 45mm T1.5 is the third lens in the Irix Cine line which stands for a perfect combination of advanced technology and modern design. A good example of the Irix smart design is the front housing element which has a diameter of 95mm and a built-in 86mm filter thread. It also provides a magnetic mount for the reversible lens hood and for future Irix Cine accessories.

This synergy is also visible in the shape of the geared rings which have been integrated into the lens housing. The convenience of operating by hand and full compatibility with follow focus systems was a priority in the external design of the lens. Olympus announces PEN E-PL10 with a flip-down screen

In addition to the release of its E-M5 Mark III camera, Olympus has also announced the launch of the PEN E-PL10, a new Micro Four Thirds camera for the Japanese and Chinese markets.

The Olympus PEN E-PL10 is visually indistinguishable to the PEN E-PL9 both in the front and the rear of the camera. Like the PEN E-PL9, the E-PL10’s 3″ 1040k-dot touchscreen screen now flips down (instead of up) for easy video recording and selfies.

Internally, the camera doesn’t look much different either compared to its predecessor. It features what we believe to be the same 16.1 Megapixel Live MOS sensor found inside the PEN E-PL9, as well as the same TruePic VIII image processor, 3-axis image stabilization (CIPA-rated for up to 3.5 stops of compensation) and contrast detection autofocus system. It also features the same 8.6 fps burst rate and 4K capture at up to 30 fps.

Olympus has added a new ‘Fine Tune’ option to adjust how strong the Art Filter effects are when applied to images.

On the connectivity front, the E-PL10 features a Micro USB port and Micro HDMI port on the side of the camera, as well as built-in 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity for pairing with the Olympus Image Share app.

As with the PEN E-PL9, the E-PL10 will be available as body-only and a pair of kits. The first kit includes the M.Zuiko 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ‘EZ’ power zoom lens while the second ‘Double Zoom Kit’ also includes the M.Zuiko 40-150mm F4-5.6 R lens. Available colors include black, brown and white. Pricing isn’t yet available, but the PEN E-PL10 is destined for the Japan and China markets in late November 2019.

Flip-down LCD monitor

Simply touch the subject shown on the LCD monitor to simultaneously focus and activate the shutter (Touch AF Shutter). When the monitor is flipped down, it automatically switches the camera to Selfie mode for easy self-portrait shooting. You can also select e-Portrait for brighter, smoother skin, or switch to movie recording with a simple touch operation. Changing the angle of the LCD monitor also makes it possible to shoot from various perspectives.

Easy connection to a smartphone

Use the built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth® and the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) app to easily connect the camera and smartphone to import images and share on social media. By using the Share Order function, selected photos or videos on the camera will be automatically transferred to your smartphone once the camera is turned off. OI.Share also provides a Camera How To guide, containing tutorial videos of shooting techniques and a Digital Guidebook packed with other useful shooting tips.

AP (Advanced Photo) mode

AP mode provides shooting functions that generally require advanced photography techniques with simple operations. Anyone can easily shoot a multi-exposure photo by just overlapping two images in Multi Exposure, and shoot light trails of stars or automobile lamps without the risk of overexposure in Live Composite. Silent mode, which mutes shutter and operation sounds, is now possible in P, A, S and M modes as well as AP mode.

Eizo announces 27″ 4K ColorEdge CS2740 monitor with USB-C connection, 10-bit input

Eizo has announced the upcoming release of the ColorEdge CS2740, a 27″ 4K monitor with USB-C connectivity. The CS2740 monitor is a successor to Eizo’s ColorEdge CS2730 that increases the resolution, adds new connectivity options and now offers 10-bit input.

The updated monitor features a 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels, 164 ppi) resolution (compared to the 2560 x 1440 pixel, 109 ppi resolution of the CS2730), new backlight uniformity technology and 10-bit color support (over HDMI) for computers capable of outputting 10-bit images.

On the connection front, Eizo has swapped the DVI-D port found on the CS2730 for a USB-C port, as well as swapped one of the USB-B ports for two USB Type-A ports. In addition to transferring the image to the CS2740 over USB-C, the USB-C port also supports 60W power delivery so laptops can both transfer the image and charge at the same time. This not only saves time, but also cleans up how many cables you’ll need when using the CS2740 as an external display with a laptop.

Eizo claims the CS2740 can be calibrated in just 90 seconds when using its ColorNavigator 7 software with a compatible calibration system. Additional accessories available alongside the CS2740 include a blackout hood and a dedicated calibration sensor. Eizo offers five-year warranty for the CS2740 (or up to 30,000 hours of use).

Currently, there’s no pricing information available for the CS2740, but the product page notes the product will officially be available starting October 24, 2019, so we should know more within the week.
