Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 NoctNikon has just announced its latest Z-mount lens:

The Nikkor Z 58mm S Noct lens, which includes a whopping f/0.95 maximum aperture. The lens is slated to hit the shelves on October 31st, and it will debut with considerable hype, having snagged the designation as the fastest Nikkor lens ever made.

For those of us who have been waiting for Nikon to make good on its claims that the Z-mount’s 55mm diameter allows for the production of better optics, this new lens should give us a hint of what’s to come. But while the f/0.95 maximum aperture is eye-catching, is it actually useful? And will photographers actually be interested in this lens?

Let’s take a closer look.

While lenses with ultra-wide apertures are rarely small, the Nikkor 58mm f/0.95 sits on the other extreme, with a weight of nearly 4.5 lbs (2 kg). This comes from its aperture, the 17 lens elements, and a magnesium alloy construction. Of course, there are real benefits to all these features, such as higher optical quality and increased ruggedness. But is it worth the cost? For many, a huge benefit of mirrorless setups is the decreased size and weight. Yet this lens won’t be at all convenient to carry around. Plus, all that glass takes up a lot of space, which is why it’s packed into a 6-inch (15.3 cm) body.

Note also that an f/0.95 aperture will provide a very small plane of focus. And given that this lens only focuses manually to begin with, you may struggle somewhat to lock onto your subjects with speed.

The lens is primarily designed for astrophotographers and other night shooters (hence the ‘Noct’ designation). And for astrophotographers, the shallow depth of field won’t be a problem, as they rarely need to think about depth of field anyway. But ambitious portrait photographers may find themselves frustrated by the combination of a shallow plane of focus at f/0.95 and a manual focus lens, and anyone who tries to lock on subjects other than the night sky may come away from shoots without much luck.

Now, don’t get me wrong:

The Nikon 58mm f/0.95 is most likely an incredible lens, optically speaking. Nikon is promising amazing sharpness, and I expect this will be borne out in tests. I’m also impressed by the wide aperture, which will allow for unprecedented shooting in low light and at night. Astrophotographers, in particular, will like this lens, regardless of its size.

But at the same time, it’s hard not to wonder whether many other photographers will be interested. Especially because Nikon’s MSRP for this new lens is an incredible $ 7999.95 USD.

Sigma announces pricing and availability of its fp camera

Sigma has announced the pricing and availability of its L-mount full-frame mirrorless camera, the Sigma fp.

The compact 24MP video/stills camera can shoot 4K video at up to 30p, 1080 footage at up to 120p and can shoot 14-bit DNG stills, all using electronic shutter.

The Sigma fp will cost $ 1,899 for the body-only and $ 2,199 as a kit with the Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens. Sigma says the camera will start shipping on October 25th.

Canon announces upcoming public availability of its IVY REC clip camera

Following a successful Indiegogo campaign, Canon has publically launched its IVY REC clippable camera made for snapping images and recording videos in risky environments. As its name suggests, this model features a clip for directly attaching the camera to strap, loop, belt or similar item; the same clip also functions as a viewfinder, according to Canon.

The IVY REC Outdoor camera features a 13MP sensor, support for capturing 1:1 and 4:3 JPEG images in resolutions up to 3104 x 3104 and 4160 x 3120, video recording at 720p/30fps through 1080p/60fps in MP4 format, and a fixed 25.4mm F2.2 lens.

In addition to electronic image stabilization, the camera features a mono microphone, a memory card slot for saving content, a 660mAh rechargeable battery, and micro USB connectivity. IVY REC likewise features Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi 802.11b/g/n, as well as support for the Canon Mini Cam, which provides access to image and video settings, battery life info, and remaining storage capacity.

The Canon Mini Cam app offers a live viewfinder mode and remote shutter with timer, plus there’s the ability to wirelessly transfer images from the camera to a mobile device. As indicated by Canon’s marketing, the model is also durable with a shockproof/waterproof design and support for operating temperatures from -10C to 40C (14F to 104F). Nikon announces Z-mount lens roadmap

Nikon has announced a roadmap for its Z-mount mirrorless system. All of the lenses are full-frame, with one zoom being the exception.

The roadmap adds a 20mm F1.8, 50mm F1.2 and 105mm ‘Micro’ lens to the high-end ‘S-Line’ of lenses. There will also be a 28 and 40mm lens as part of what Nikon calls a ‘Compact Prime’ series and a non-S 60mm Micro close-up lens.

Nikon’s Z-mount lens roadmap gives a good indication of the company’s plans for the system.

S-line zooms

The ‘S’ line will also gain a 14-24mm F2.8 zoom and a 70-200mm F2.8 for sports and photojournalism. These will be accompanied by a 24-105mm S-line zoom and, while no aperture range has been specified, this is grouped with the existing F4 zooms, An S-line 100-400mm lens is also listed.

Other zooms

A non-S 24-200mm travel zoom and 200-600mm zoom complete the full-frame offerings, giving a pretty comprehensive picture of what Nikon has planned for the Z-mount.

On the APS-C side of things, there will be a 18-140mm (equivalent to 27-210mm), as with the compact primes, no maximum aperture is specified.

No timescales are given for fulfilling the lenses on the roadmap and, as is normal, a footnote indicates that the plans may change without notice.

Voigtlander announces upcoming release of a 50mm F2 APO-Lanthar lens for Sony E-mount

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Voigtlander Classic Line, Voigtlander has released a new 50mm F2.0 APO-Lanthar lens for Sony E-Mount camera systems.

The manual lens is constructed of 10 elements in 8 groups, including two aspherical elements and a floating focusing system. The lens features a 12-blade aperture diaphragm with a ‘special shape’ for more pleasing bokeh, a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7in) and a 49mm front filter.

Despite being manual, the lens features electrical contacts for transferring EXIF data to the camera, including a distance encoder to ensure the lens works with Sony’s 5-axis image stabilization. Voigtlander has also included a de-clicking option so no noise is made when changing the aperture when shooting video. The lens measures in at 61.3mm (2.14in) long and weighs just 364g (12.84oz).

Pricing and availability information isn’t yet available. We have contacted Voigtlander for more information and will update this article if we receive a response.

Yuneec announces Typhoon H3 drone, co-engineered with Leica

Chinese drone manufacturer Yuneec announced the latest release in its Typhoon series, as well as a strategic partnership with Leica Camera AG. The H3 is the first resulting product from the collaborative efforts of the two companies. It is especially aimed at aerial photographers and cinematographers. The Yuneec Typhoon H3’s most noteworthy new feature is an ION L1 Pro camera that was co-engineered with Leica.

The ION L1 Pro camera features a 20MP, 1″ CMOS sensor. It can capture 4K/60p video at a maximum bitrate of 100 Mbps on a stabilized 3-axis gimbal that offers up an unrestricted 360° view for panoramic shots. Imaging modes optimized and calibrated by Leica (Auto White Balance, color reproduction, sharpening, and de-noising) promise top-notch vibrancy, contrast, and resolution.

Developed in accordance with Leica specifications, the camera offers a range of options including automatic exposure bracketing and semi-automatic through wide dynamic range. 10-bit Y-Log and DNG profiles offer optimal conditions for professional post-production workflows on programs including Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Lossless digital zoom (specs unknown at the moment) and short JPEG intervals for seamless hyperlapse creation are also included.

Wenyan Jiang, Founder & Chairwoman of Yuneec, said the following regarding the new Typhoon H3 drone:

The standard H3 kit includes the PX4-based ST16S flight controller and two batteries that can power the drone for up to 25 minutes of flight time. A 7″ touchscreen is built into the remote and displays the live camera image in 720p (HD). Image transmission distance extends to almost one mile. A second pilot can be added with the Team Mode function and the purchase of an additional ST16S remote control.

Four intelligent flight modes are included for professional-grade cinematography. The Follow Me/Watch Me mode follows a designated subject, Curve Cable Cam allows you to plot coordinates beforehand for the drone to follow while the camera remains independently controllable, Orbit Me flies around a target in a circular motion, and Journey ascends along a linear path then automatically returns for a flawless shot.

Yuneec has continually emphasized the fact that all data is transmitted strictly between the drone, its camera, and controller. There isn’t a cloud system in place, ensuring privacy. While the Typhoon H3 doesn’t contain any rear-facing obstacle avoidance sensors, it comes with a redundant control signal, a Return Home function, and an adjustable virtual fence that ensures it won’t fly beyond a specified radius. The hexacopter has a failsafe 5-rotor mode that automatically activates if one fails. This ensures that the drone remains in the air and doesn’t crash.

A release date has not been announced. Pre-ordering is currently not available and official specs haven’t been published yet as of this writing. Though not confirmed, it is expected to retail for around $ 2,200.

Samsung announces 43.7MP ISOCELL Slim GH1 mobile sensor with 0.7?m pixels

Samsung has announced its tiniest camera sensor to date, the ISOCELL Slim GH1.

Designed specifically for ‘slim full-display devices,’ the pixels measure just 0.7 micrometers (?m) each for a total 43.7-megapixels (7,968 x 5,480 pixels) of resolution. As its name suggests, the ISOCELL Slim GH1 uses Samsung’s ISOCELL Plus technology, which uses pixel isolation to minimize color cross-talk, an issue that becomes more problematic the smaller pixels get.

Samsung also notes the ISOCELL Slim GH1 offers its Tetracell technology, which uses pixel-merging methods to give the sensor ‘light sensitivity equivalent to that of a 1.4?m-pixel image sensor.’

The ISOCELL Slim GH1 is capable of recording 4K video at up to 60 frames per second by using Samsung’s Tetracell technology to downsample the footage down to 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, a resolution that covers the standard resolution of 4K video (3,840 x 2,160 pixels). It also features phase detection autofocus, real-time HDR capabilities and gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS).

Samsung says it will start production of the ISOCELL Slim GH1 by the end of the year, meaning we probably won’t see it inside any devices until 2020. Based on the ‘Slim’ nomanclature and the mention of ‘selfie’ in the press release, it’s likely this particular sensor will be used as a front-facing camera, although it’s certainly not limited to such implementations.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced the industry’s first 0.7-micrometer (?m)-pixel image sensor, the 43.7-megapixel (Mp) Samsung ISOCELL Slim GH1. Thanks to advanced ISOELL Plus technology, the new ultra-high-resolution GH1 image sensor embraces 43.7-million 0.7?m-sized pixels in a super-small package, providing the optimum solution for slim full-display devices.

“Samsung has been stepping up in pixel technology innovation from the industry’s first 1.0?m-pixel image sensor, to most recently, 0.8?m ultra-high-resolution sensors at 64Mp and 108Mp,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of the sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to deliver yet another breakthrough with the industry’s first 0.7?m pixel image sensor, the ISOCELL Slim GH1 that will enable sleeker and more streamlined designs as well as excellent imaging experiences in tomorrow’s smartphones.”

The ISOCELL Slim GH1 is the industry’s first mobile image sensor to adopt the smallest pixel size in the industry at 0.7?m. By utilizing ISOCELL Plus, Samsung’s latest pixel isolation technology that minimizes color cross-talk and optical loss, the tiny 0.7?m pixels are able to absorb sufficient light information to produce bright and vivid photographs. In low-light environments, the GH1 makes use of pixel-merging Tetracell technology that enables higher light sensitivity equivalent to that of a 1.4?m-pixel image sensor.

For video recording at 4K (3,840×2,160) resolutions, the ISOCELL Slim GH1, with a high resolution of 7,968×5,480, is able to take 4K videos with minimum loss in field of view (FoV), while most high-resolution image sensors crop or scale down full image resolutions that result in a reduced FoV. Using Tetracell technology, the GH1 is converted down to 3,984×2,740, a resolution that snugly covers the 4K (3,840×2,160) resolution, allowing users to capture more detailed backgrounds when recording high-resolution videos or selfies at 60T frames per second (fps).

For sharper photographs and video, the GH1 supports a gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS) and a high-performing phase detection auto-focus technology, Super PD, allowing fast and accurate autofocus. In addition, the real-time high dynamic range (HDR) feature delivers more balanced exposure and richer color even in mixed-light environments.

The Samsung ISOCELL Slim GH1 is expected to be in mass production by the end of this year.

Yasuhara announces Anthy 35mm F1.8 lens for Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E mount cameras

Budget Japanese optics manufacturer Yasuhara has announced the Anthy 35mm F1.8 manual lens for full-frame mirrorless camera systems.

The Anthy 35mm F1.8 lens (translated) is constructed of nine elements in seven groups and features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm with an F1.8 to F16 range. The front filter thread is 52mm, it has a minimum focusing distance of 40cm (15.75in) and the lens weighs 409g (14.3oz).

The lens is entirely manual and doesn’t feature electrical contacts, meaning no metadata will be sent to the camera it’s attached to and, if applicable, the ‘release without lens’ setting will need to be turned on.

The lens is set for a fall 2019 release and will be available in Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E mounts. No pricing information has been given at this time. We have contacted Yasuhara and will update this article if we hear back about pricing information.

We haven’t heard much about Yasuhara in the past and its lens lineup is rather limited, so we can’t attest to the image quality or durability of its lenses, but the company recently celebrated its seventh year in business. Yasuhara also has Anthy-branded 50mm and 85mm lenses in development (translated).

SLR Magic announces 21mm T1.6, 50mm T1.4 ‘MicroPrime’ cine lenses for MFT camera systems

Budget lens manufacturer SLR Magic has added a pair of Micro Four Thirds (MFT) ‘MicroPrime’ lenses to its cinema lineup: the MicroPrime CINE 21mm T1.6 and the MicroPrime CINE 50mm T1.4.

The lenses, designed specifically with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and Z Cam E2 in mind, feature full manual control, an 82mm front filter thread, an 85mm front filter diameter for matte boxes and are both geared with 0.8 Mod gears.

The MicroPrime CINE 21mm T1.6 is constructed of 13 elements in 11 groups and weighs 700g (1.57lbs), while the MicroPrime CINE 50mm T1.4 is constructed of 6 elements in 5 groups with a weight of 630g (1.39lbs). The lenses, which will retail for $ 599 a piece at authorized retailers, round out SLR’s MFT lineup alongside the 12mm T2.8 and 18mm T2.8.

The lens, which appears to be a cine version of its 11mm F/4 lens, is constructed with a magnesium housing with various rubber seals for weather resistance. It’s comprised of 16 elements including four high-refractive index (HR) elements, three aspherical elements and two low-dispersion (ED) elements.

The lens weighs 1.1kg (2.43lbs) and features Irix’s Magnetic Mount System, which makes it easy to attach compatible accessories, including the lens hood. Irix has also added its new Multi Start Thread focusing mechanism, which ‘allows quiet and precise focusing even under adverse weather conditions such as rain, humidity or extreme temperatures.’

Other features include a 95mm diameter front flange and Mod 0.8 standard geared rings.

The 11mm T4.3 cine lens will be offered in Arri PL, Canon EF, MFT and Sony E mounts. Pricing and availability has not yet been announced, but ‘will be available shortly.’ For more information, keep up to date on the Irix website.

Irix 11mm T4.3 is the second unique lens from the new Cine line. Its extremely short focal length, rectilinear image projection and the large image circle of 43.3mm (covering the full-frame format) make it one of the most outstanding cine lenses on the market. Depending on the diagonal of the sensor, the lens can provide a moderately wide angle of view for classic wide-angle shots or super-panoramic 123-degree viewing angle in a 2.39:1 widescreen format. The same, but different optics
The lens optical system is based on the new optical formula, developed especially for cinematic purpose. It consists of 16 optical elements, which four are made with high refractive index (HR) glass, three other have aspherical surfaces and the last two are made with low-dispersion glass (ED). The use of the large front lens and other special glass elements provides crisp cinematic shots in a resolution up to 8K while keeping the focus “breathing” effect at the lowest level. The lens offers a large maximum T number of 4.3 which can be reduced to T22, thanks to the rounded shape of iris blades.

Functional and highly innovative
When designing the lens mechanical system of 11mm T4.3, we used newly developed technical solutions that have been successfully implemented in the Irix Cine 150mm T3.0 lens. The new Multi Start Thread focusing mechanism allows quiet and precise focusing even under adverse weather conditions such as rain, humidity or extreme temperatures. The focusing geared ring rotates 180 degrees and depending on the lens version, has a focusing scale with metric or imperial units.

Thanks to another innovative solution like the adaptive ring, the Irix Cine 11mm T4.3 ensures great ergonomics of operation both by hand and with follow focus mechanism. Moreover, despite the very short optical system layout, geared rings of focus and aperture were placed at the same height as in other Irix Cine lenses – all for better ergonomics and more intuitive use.

The exceptional functionality is a distinctive feature of all Irix products. The same applies to the Irix Cine 11mm T4.3, whose extremely compact design (weights 1,1 kg) has been also equipped with an innovative Magnetic Mount System for accessories. The MMS system allows quick and easy attachment of a variety of dedicated accessories. The lens hood included in the kit with the lens is the first element of the MMS system. The system will be expanded with further accessories in the future.

Prepared for all weather conditions
The ultra-wide field of view of the Irix 11mm T4.3 means that its natural work environment is outdoor. It’s durable magnesium housing and numerous rubber seals guarantee the safety of both the optical system and the camera sensor in every weather conditions.

Designed to work in accordance with film industry standards
The 11mm T4.3 is another lens of the Irix Cine line that proves the newest technical solutions can perfectly harmonize with well-established film industry standards. The lens has a front flange with a diameter of 95mm and geared rings in the Mod 0.8 standard, which ensures its compatibility with most cine gear accessories. Attention to maintaining the standard also applies to the family of Irix cine lenses whose geared rings are in the same position and have unified rotation angle.
