Behind the Shot: Watery Grave

20 Jun

In this article, nature and wildlife photographer Erez Marom shares the story of his shot ‘Watery Grave’, captured on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. As Erez admits, his original Raw capture left a lot to be desired, but post-processing yielded a result that he’s proud of – quite rightfully, in our opinion. Take a look at his final image and find out how it was captured and processed. Learn more

How to Use Cinemagraphs to Spice Up Your Photography Marketing

20 Jun

While cinemagraphs are not exactly new, they are still great for advertising purposes because of their format: a GIF/video hybrid where an element of the still photo plays in never-ending loop, which results in constant motion. Created by visual artists Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg of Ann Street Studio, they can be a fun and creative way to give a Continue Reading

Weekly Photography Challenge – Night Photography

20 Jun

Recently I rounded up some great examples of stunning night photography. It’s a genre of photography that is popular with many and comes with its own challenges and issues to overcome. But it’s worth the effort as you can create images with something special. Places just look different at night.

Above are a couple examples of my own night photography. Now it’s your turn.

Weekly photography challenge – night photography

If you haven’t tried long exposure photography or gone out and done some shooting at night, now is the perfect time to try it. Find a buddy to come along with you, it’s more fun if you work with a friend. Photography clubs and meetup groups often do group events for night photography, look for one in your area. Find a mentor who has some experience with night photography to help you get started.

Try some star shots, city light, light trails, moon or Milky Way shots, painting with light, or even a portrait. If you need some assistance see the list of articles below that can give you some tips.

Share your images below:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge. Sometimes it takes a while for an image to appear so be patient and try not to post the same image twice.

The Hand of Man: Bonsai Hangs Inside Abandoned Power Plant

20 Jun

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

bonsai power plant 1

Inside the cooling tower of an abandoned power plant, a tiny bonsai tree hangs from a geometric metal frame, its roots exposed. The only other sign of life inside the cavernous space is an occasional slick of moss. The project meets at the junction between urban exploration, installation art and photography, with no one but the artist witnessing it in person before it was quietly whisked away, the bonsai re-planted to continue its life.

Located in the city of Charleroi, Belgium and originally built in 1921, the coal-burning power plant was decommissioned in 2007 after criticism of its inefficiency. While much of it was demolished, the tower – which once cooled 480,000 gallons of water per minute – still stands as a dystopian monument, drawing in determined explorers despite the security guards posted outside. Before protests shut it down, it was responsible for 10 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions in the nation.

Japanese botanical artist Azuma Makoto doesn’t typically provide any explanation for the meaning behind his installations, but it’s hard not to see some potent symbolism in this image. Bonsai plants are painstakingly constrained by human intervention, and here one floats without the soil it needs to thrive, within a cavernous representation of waste and short-sighted thinking.

Makoto previously sent a bonsai into space for the Exobiotanica project, suspending a Japanese white pine and a bouquet of lilies and other flowers from carbon-fiber frames and launching them into the sky with a specially-equipped balloon. Six GoPro cameras captured their journey. Said the artist, “Roots, soil and gravity – by giving up the links to life, what kind of ‘beauty’ shall be born? Within the harsh ‘nature,’ at an altitude of 30,000 meters and minus 50 degrees celsius, the plants evolve into exbiota (extraterrestrial life.)”

Opinion: The future of DSLR or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the ILC

19 Jun

Despite some sales growth, mirrorless isn’t taking over photography. Equally, DSLRs aren’t flying off the shelves the way they used to. But if you’ve found yourself arguing about whether mirrorless is the future, you’ve probably been addressing the wrong question. DPReview’s Richard Butler argues that convergence is coming and that it’s not the mirrors that matter. Read more

Eisformationen

19 Jun

© Ryota Kaji Kajita
