NYC Comes Alive Around Massive Mural in Time Lapse Video

09 May

[ By Steph in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

Screen Shot 2015-05-08 at 9.49.43 AM

A 150-foot-tall figure of a man walking materializes on a Manhattan sidewalk, slowly coming into focus as the city awakens around it, in a new time-lapse video. French photographer and street artist JR directs a team of workers who can be seen scrambling around the piece like worker bees as the hours pass, the sun arcs over the site and thousands of people mill by.

Screen Shot 2015-05-08 at 9.47.03 AM

The New York Times commissioned JR to create the piece for an accompanying story on walking in the city, and produced the video. A camera perched atop the adjacent Flatiron building captures the action as the team wets the pavement before dawn, preparing to adhere the giant paste-up.

It’s cool to see the process behind installing a wheat paste project this big, and the time lapse shows just how much work goes into it despite the fact that it’s not being hand-painted onsite.

JR is known for journalistic murals made of his own photography, putting giant faces all over urban structures like walls, roofs, streets and train cars. The photo-realism is especially effective when it’s paired with aging, deteriorating surfaces.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

09 May

Today I rounded up some images of some special places. Some architectural wonders, many full of history – all special to the people who visit them. This is various places of worship.

Neil Howard

By Neil Howard

That could mean a number of different types of buildings and places including:

  • Small home town churches
  • Basilicas
  • Mosques
  • Synagogues
  • Temples
  • Wats
  • Even cemeteries

Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

In my quest for example images I found a lot of HDR images of interiors – many that were quite a bit over done, at least for my tastes. I even found some of my own images dating back to 2010 when I first started experimenting with HDR and they were making my eyes bleed – my own images! See this article on the stages of HDR photographers, see if you can relate.

So I redid a few from the Montreal Notre Dame Basilica, an amazing thing to see and photograph. I used the new Lightroom 6 (CC) Merge to HDR feature – see what you think.

Just for comparison here are my old versions, my first attempts from 2010. Even pros and teachers make mistakes but we aren’t too big to admit them.

“Ewww” right? I agree – let’s move on!

Okay here are some other good examples (in my opinion) of places of worship.

Now it’s your turn. Think outside the box to other places besides those listed about that might be considered for worship. A quiet outdoor coffee shop, how about sunrise on a deserted beach? What places do people go to find solice and think, or pray (if so inclined)?

Note: please be respectful of people inside places or worship. Those are NOT public areas and you do not have free rights to photograph them. By all means photograph the architecture if you’re allowed but always ask before taking someone’s photo inside.

Share your images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge. Sometimes it takes a while for an image to appear so be patient and try not to post the same image twice.

A couple more ideas from my own image collection. Keep in mind you can do bits and pieces of places too, not just grand sweeping wide angle shots. How quiet is this shot of the candles? How meaningful is it though, and does it tell a story of the place?

Field Test: Sigma 19mm, 30mm and 60mm F2.8 DN lenses

09 May

Sigma’s 19mm F2.8 DN, 30mm F2.8 DN and 60mm F2.8 DN Art lenses were launched at the CP+ show in Yokohama way back in January 2013. We’ve been using these inexpensive primes on both Sony E-mount and Micxro Four Thirds cameras for a while now, and our man in London, Damien Demolder has written up his impressions. We pooled our sample images for this field test. Read more

Canon issues product advisory for Rebel T6i/T6s

09 May

Canon USA has released a product advisory regarding the sensor defects on its Rebel T6i/T6s (750D/760D) that we reported on last week. The company states that on certain cameras ‘white spots may exist on the optical layer which may result in the appearance of dark circular patterns on the captured image under certain shooting conditions’. These cameras will be repaired free of charge and models that have already been repaired will have a marking inside the battery door. Read more

Ethereal Images of Places of Worship

08 May

A while ago I shared a collection of architectural images, now let’s get a little more specific. Churches and places of worship are often well design, finely crafted, masterpieces of architecture.

Let’s take a look at some great, ethereal images of churches, mosques, and other places of religious practice:

Das 24 Hour Project in München

08 May

0:06 Exhausted
