Drop-Offs & Experiencing New Perspectives

19 Mar

If you’ve noticed as of late I haven’t been blogging as regularly as I have in the past. There certainly is no shortage of things to write about, but life has been an interesting ride as of late.  My focus the past several months has been primarily on family and for good reason. In a couple of months we’ll have a new member of the family arriving. This is something my wife and I have  wanted for several years and in this time we’ve been on a wild  roller coaster of highs and lows. We’re incredibly happy to have a 2nd child on the way. As I’m sure you’re curious, I know two details about the baby. First I do know the baby is a boy. Second my son has bequeathed this baby the nickname “baby cranky”. This nickname came about when I asked my son what he’d want to name his baby brother and apparently “cranky” was at the top of his 3 year old mind. Interestingly enough because I was curious I also asked him at the same time what he wanted to name the baby if it was a girl and his response was equally amusing, “wimpy”.

The process of being a parent has been hard, but amazing. While I thought I knew what sleep deprivation was as a night photographer, it is nothing compared to the prolonged sleep deprivation needed to care for a new baby. When my first son was born both my wife and I had brief moments of hallucination from our lack of sleep. We look back at those moments fondly. One hard truth about parenting beyond sleep deprivation is that time becomes precious. My time in the field for now is less than before and will remain that way, but it is deliberate and with purpose.

The one common element between parenting and photography that I enjoy is the ability to take in new perspectives. Seeing & experiencing a young child interpret the world with out bias, internal filters or awareness of boundaries is exhilarating and hilarious.  This ability to see new perspectives is what makes parenting and photography so attractive and addicting.

With that I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from my son:

When asked what he’d wish for when he sees his first star, “More stars!”

Here’s to more stars!

Samsung has announced the NX mini, the world’s slimmest interchangeable lens camera. It boasts a 1-inch, 20MP sensor and provides all of the wireless connectivity we’ve come to expect from Samsung’s cameras. We spent a little bit of time with a pre-production unit getting to know it, photographing it, and pondering its existence. Cubicle Typography: Unique Desks as Office Furniture Font

furniture font design space

One of the most dreary aspects of daily life in a cubical farm is the relentless sameness that pervades each office pod – perhaps it would help if each workspace were different, easy to assemble and simple to recycle.

This Fold Yard typography of Benoit Challand has a touch of whimsy to be sure, but it also suggests a way to break out of the box by customizing each station at a given place of work.

Who knows: these quickly-customized corrugated cardboard cubes (joined with modular plastic pieces) might be a good recipe for helping employees feel less like a hive of drones and more like individual workers with independent value and personal flexibility.

18 March, 2014 – WPPI Trade Show Report

19 Mar

There has been a lot of announcements by manufacturers in the last few months and a few more to come soon.  The Luminous-Landscape team of Kevin and Chris recently headed to Las Vegas to visit the Trade Show at the WPPI Convention.  They visited a number of manufacturers’ booths and caught up on some of the latest information.  Their report with video interviews of the Trade Show at WPPI is now available.

On Monday March 18th,  X-rite released ColorTRUE a new app that calibrates your portable devices.  It’s very easy to use and is a glimpse into how all our devices will be calibrated to showing the same image accurately no matter what device.  We’ll be reporting more on this app and its uses in the near future.

You can win an all-expenses paid photographic expedition to Antarctica, along with air fare from anywhere in the world. The value of this prize is $ 15,000.

The Luminous Landscape wants you to try any of our more than 60 training or travel videos and our new free video player. Each purchase is an entry, and an annual subscription that includes all previous as well as new videos counts as six entries. The winner of a free lifetime subscription is also chosen from each month’s entries.

OM sweet OM: Olympus OM-D E-M10 review

18 Mar

omd_em10_beauty.jpg

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 is the third incarnation of Olympus’ popular range of high-end mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The E-M10 boasts some impressive DNA, using the same excellent 16MP Four Thirds sensor as its E-M5 sibling. We’ve been shooting with it extensively over the past few weeks, hoping to find out whether this ‘digital’ OM is as capable as the two that preceded it. Those are two solid acts to follow – how does the OM-D E-M10 perform? Find out in our review

Greg Ponthus’ Traumbilder

18 Mar
