Iris the Eye-Controlled Camera: Blink Twice to Take a Picture

10 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

lens camera photographer subject

Simple, intuitive and innovative for the everyday photographer, Iris promises even more to the disabled, letting anyone control capture area, zoom level, the moment of a shot and other features … all with only eye movements.

Mimi Zou is a graduate of the Royal College of Art developed this eye-tracking camera design around biometric technology. The device can recognize people on both sides of the lens by their eyes – the person taking the picture (so it can pre-load preferred settings) as well as the person being photographed.

lense camera screen interface

A translucent screen inhabits the center of the circular device, allowing you to get an augmented-reality look at your subject matter, with optional overlays indicating prominent buildings or other features of the built environment you may wish to capture.

lense camera iris invention

Narrow your eyelids to zoom in, then open wide to zoom back out. Focus on a spot, blink twice, and a photo is taken. If a friend is recognized in the frame, there is also an option to tag them on the spot. And all of this functionality is rolled up into what looks like a cylindrical lens without a camera.

lense camera hand held

As of right now it remains a working model, but with luck, time and funding it might become the next wave in ever-more-minimalist photographic contraptions, and particularly powerful image-taking aid for those who cannot use hands to easily hold and point a camera.

Are you an addict? Photographer blogs about ‘Gear Addiction Syndrome’

10 Jul

minime.jpg

Florida-based Olivier Duong has been blogging about a common addiction among enthusiast and professional photographers  – G.A.S., or ‘Gear Addiction Syndrome’. Among its symptoms are ‘hoarding gear that you don’t really need and getting stuff for the sake of getting it’. Does this sound painfully familiar? In his blog post, entitled ‘How buying cameras and lenses made me miserable and loose thousands’, self-confessed former ‘gear addict’ Dunong explains how his gear acquisition got out of control. Click through for a link to the full article.

DIY ‘blimp’ case makes Nikon D800 silent and waterproof for $80

10 Jul

soundblimp.jpg

So-called ‘blimp’ cases are designed to greatly reduce the sound of a camera’s shutter, making it safe to take record shots during filming for TV and movies. Typically, commercial blimp cases cost upwards of $ 1000, but pro photographer Dan Tabár made his own using a Pelican case, some ABS pipe fittings, a wireless shutter release, and other simple parts sourced at a hardware store, for around $ 80. Click through to see how well it works for both sound suppression and underwater shooting.

9% of dPS Readers Have Owned More than 10 Digital Cameras

10 Jul

Last month 14,002 readers responded to the question in our monthly poll which asked how many digital cameras they had owned.

The results are in!

Screen Shot 2013 07 02 at 9 34 03 PM

It seems there was a fairly even spread among readers who have owned between 1-5 digital cameras – with 10-20% of respondents in each category.

The interesting category to me was the 10+ category with just under 9% of our readers having owned more than 10 cameras! The comments that accompanied the original poll post showed that many of those who voted in this category reported having had significantly more than 10 too! It looks like we’ve got some enthusiasts in our midst! :-)

Photographing Twin Newborns by Hillarry Pitts

10 Jul

For you newborn and baby photographers out there, you know that it requires a ton of patience and time to work with these tiny little ones. You also know that photographing newborns before 10 days new is best as they still like to be curled, tucked in and swaddled tight. Well, you may or may […]

Sibling Spaces: Modular Rooms Made for Brother & Sister

09 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

modular kids room moscow

For getting things done: a static, serious and refined work space is shared by the siblings. For everything else: there is a playful flexibility to be found in movable modules, hanging hammocks, cozy nooks and hidden ladders.

modular room upstairs hammock

Designed by Ruetemple for a family in Moscow, Russia, this children-centric interior balances the need for serious engagement with studies and self-determination outside of school-related activity (plus perhaps lessons in sharing and diplomacy all around).

modular multi level rooms

On the main level, across from the work zone with its ergonomic chairs and built-in shelves, is a three-piece system of modular parts – set apart visually via the use of darker wood.

modular bedroom layout box

The constituent elements can be spun and situated on demand, turned into a hangout space, living room or bedroom (or whatever else the kids can come up with, for that matter).

modular brother sister interior

Upstairs under a slanted roof are nooks for sleeping, reading and storage that can be made into more private bedrooms, again allowing freedom for self-determination in terms of sleeping arrangements.

modular childrens room office

The hammock is naturally a permeable mesh, and allows light to pass from one level to the next while also making use of what would otherwise be lost potential floor space.

Panasonic releases firmware updates for Lumix GH3 and G5

09 Jul

shared:download-button.png

Panasonic has released firmware updates for its Lumix DMC-GH3 and DMC-G5 mirrorless cameras. Version 1.2 for the GH3 adds a ‘Low light focus’ mode that works down to -3 EV, a ‘Silent Mode’, and an ‘Exposure Compensation Reset’ function. Meanwhile version 1.1 for the G5 only corrects wording of the Motion Picture menu on cameras sold in PAL broadcast regions, and therefore isn’t required by US owners. Click through for download links.
