LumiQuest’s Quest Couch discusses how a basic understanding of how bounce light behaves enables the photographer to redirect the light accurately and effectively. Seemingly minor variations in the angles of a bounce surface can dramatically effect the illumination of the subject. Variable angle bounce surfaces introduce the very real possibility of misdirected light and uneven illumination.

Still shooting video on the GH2? Are you using the standard kit lens?

Hmm, good reasons but if one has a 3100 or 5100 go a head and step up to a 7000 or a 600. But I here that the newer sensors on the 3200 and 5200 is better then the 7000.

I just picked up the D7000 kit with 18-105mm for $899 at Futureshop. I’ll have to look into the D5200.

Sorry you feel that way podpit. I think that if you read the other comments on this topic you’ll see that understanding is not as universal as you might think!

It took you three minutes to explain something that everyone above the age of 8 already knows.. I refuse to believe that some people really are dumb enough to not understand this by themselves.

some great points made in this video! Very easy to misunderstand the bounce angle, but something I and I expect many others have done. Cheers.

I also wanna add that I shot my very first wedding the day my flash came. And an effective tool it can be. And despite that I didn’t know what the heck I was doing, the pics came out beautiful, and the family was happy. I also did a maternity shot and I tried something TOTALLY unheard of to me at least. I had my bounce flash and aimed it toward the reflector (hoping that) the flash would ricochet to the object that I shot, and I wound up with the most vivid, clearest, image I’ve ever seen!

Helpful indeed. I recently bought a bounce flash and I’m still learning how to read the chart on it. although I’ve had some very successful shot after toying with it-including NOT using the diffuser on it, I might add-it still takes some getting used to. I’m glad that I stumbled upon your video. Short, and simple, but very educational to say the least.

Thanks for your thoughts. The mirror certainly illustrates the point more dramatically than other less reflective surfaces. While you are correct that some light will be redirected forward, the bulk of the light will leave the bounce surface at the equal and opposite angle. Thanks for crediting me with it but I’m afraid it’s not “my theory” it’s a law of physics most often attributed to Descartes in the mid 1600’s . Google “Angle of Incidence”.

i have a question, since the mounted flash is usually much higher than the subject’s face, supposing the lens is in line with the subject’s face, would that mean that if it stayed at a 45 deg angle, the flash would be reflected off the head or even higher than that of the subject?
