  • Disk Usage Utility – Detailed Hard Drive Usage via a GUI or Command Line

    GetFoldersize is a freeware disk usage utility for Windows that also can be run at the command line to generate reports.

    GetFoldersize is a freeware disk usage utility package for Windows, written by Michael Thummerer Software Design. Select a source folder and the software scans it and its subdirectories, displaying the sizes of files and folders contained therein via a detailed expandable tree view. Click on a folder name to view the list of files contained, sorted by size and displayable in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes.

    Options include increasing or decreasing the font size, changing the application language (German or English), and displaying folder levels with different background colors for easy differentiation. You can toggle the display of folders, drives, and/or files, as well as a list of the largest files. A preview window can be enabled for selected file types….

  • Microsoft Word 2010 – Stop the Not So Smart Quotes

    Prevent Word 2010 from converting your quotes into those that don’t always paste well into other applications and documents.

    Microsoft Word 2010 has a tendency to perform a great deal of correcting as you type, useful if you keep typing in teh instead of the (unless you really want to type in teh Internets, which in this case Word can be annoying). Among this happily-correcting behavior is the changing of quotation marks to “smart quotes”, ones where the quotes slant at an angle.

    Unfortunately, if you copy and paste documents containing “smart quotes” into other applications, such as web page editors, these quotes may not appear as desired. Worse, you might paste them into an HTML document, notice that the quotes look fine on screen, but users with other browsers / operating systems may see strange characters instead of the quotes. Definitely not so smart… So, how can you disable them?…

  • Just Posted! Panasonic GH2 14mm F2.5 preview samples gallery

    Just posted: Our Panasonic GH2/14mm F2.5 samples gallery. Panasonic’s latest video-focused Micro Four Thirds camera features an entirely new 18MP multi-aspect-ratio sensor and has been released alongside a 14mm F2.5 pancake lens. We’ve got hold of production examples of both and have taken them out shooting to get a flavor of how they perform with a variety of lighting conditions, subject distances and apertures. Rather than shooting the same scene at all ISO settings, we’ve shot an outdoor scene at ISO 160 to ISO 800 and indoors 1600 to 12,800 to give a more realistic impression of what you can expect in situations you might actually encounter.

  • 28 September, 2010 – Yosemite Sanctuary

    One of the most respected landscape photographers working in America today is William Neill, who is becoming a new regular contributor to this site.

    His latest essay is titled Yosemite Sanctuary. Yosemite is an icon of the American West, and many of us have photographed there over the years, but it has been home to Bill for the past 30+ years.
