  • Review: Creative Landscape Photography eBook by Guy Tal

    There are few photographers who are as skilled with the written word as they are with a camera as friend, photographer and author Guy Tal. Guy’s latest eBook “Creative Landscape Photography” is a comprehensive and well-thought book that is perfect for intermediate and advanced photographers who are looking to hone their creative skills.

    What is refreshing about “Creative Landscape Photography” is that it is not just instructional in its 86 pages of  descriptive text, but in its consistent use of reader exercises. Guy consistently spurs the reader to take part in  exercises provided with in each section of the book. These exercise are a great bridge to Guy’s popular Creative Landscape Photography workshop even if you’ve yet to attend one. Rather than passively absorb knowledge relayed in the book,  the active participation that is prompted with each exercise helps reinforce the concepts discussed.

    The best way to use your imagination is simply to not stand in its way.

    What I found most compelling about Guy’s writing is that it is incredibly positive and supportive. The thought of being creative can be a menacing proposition to many, but Guy provides written mentorship that is invaluable. Exceptionally well organized, the book contains sections including  the Creative Process, Concept, Visualization, Composition and Capture. Not only does each section include Guy’s inspiring photographs they include quotes from other inspirational thinkers. A book containing such a great balance of technical information and creative philosophy is a must for ones library.

  • Zip and Unzip Software – Drag and Drop Archive Extractions Via ExtractNow

    ExtractNow supports drag-and-drop archive extraction, and it can monitor folders for new archives and automatically extract them.

    ExtractNow is a freeware archive extraction tool for Windows. By dragging archives from Explorer, you can extract multiple files simultaneously, including .arj, .cab, .lzh, .rar, and .zip file types. Resulting files are placed in the same directory as the archives, or you can choose a default directory.

    Options and features include keeping the window on top (useful if you plan on doing a LOT of downloading and archive extraction), performing activities after archive extractions such as removing the original archive files or moving them to a “Processed” folder, and monitoring folders for archives and automatically extracting them. You can add right-click context menu extensions to Explorer to queue or extract files, if desired….

  • Google Chrome – Search a Term by Highlighting It, with Autocomplete

    The “Highlight to Search (by Google)” extension to Google Chrome lets you search by highlighting text and clicking a pop-up magnifying glass.

    Google Chrome users: when you see text on a web page that you would like to research further via Google, are you tired of copying the text and pasting it into the Address Bar? Or, even if you know that you can right-click selected text and choose “Search Google for”, wouldn’t it be nice to have Autocomplete features here so you can refine your search query?

    The “Highlight to Search (by Google) extension offers an alternative way to search. After installation, all you need to do is highlight text on a webpage and a magnifying glass appears. Click it and a search box appears with AutoComplete features. Click on your term or a related one and a new tab appears with results of your search query from Google. It’s that easy….

  • A Special Note for Multilingual Readers

    UPDATE: Okay, it is not perfect. Not even close. But it is helping enough people so that I decided to leave it in. Use at your own risk, and I hope it helps!

    I have added a machine-driven Google translate module to the site, in the drop-down menus on the right. Alas, I have no way of judging how good it is, and it obviously will not be great. And my heavy use of colloquial English will not help matters.

    Question is, is it serviceable or is it so bad as to be laughable? I would note that you can improve any translation by holding your mouse over it for a couple of seconds.

    I will decide after one week, based on your comments below. It is an all-or-none thing — we can’t cherry pick the languages. But please help me decide by giving it a try and leaving a comment. It can be as simple as the language tested, and a rating from 1 (awful) to 10 (wonderful).

  • Microsoft Outlook 2010 – Show More Calendar Months in the Right Pane

    Configure Outlook 2010 to show more calendar months in the To-Do Bar on the right side of the application window.

    On the right side of the Microsoft Outlook 2010 window is the “To-Do Bar”. By default, this shows the current calendar month, upcoming appointments, and a list of Tasks.

    If you would like to, at a glance, see the next calendar month as well in the To-Do Bar, perform the following tweak. You can add even more months, though this will require a higher resolution / window size to view them all. Also, simultaneously viewing more months may push the appointment and Task displays off the screen….
