    We’ve just added Leica M9 studio shots to our comparison tool. As part of our forthcoming review of the Sigma SD1, we’ll be comparing it to a range of large-sensor, high-resolution cameras, which meant including the Leica M9. The shots, actually taken with an M9-P, should not be seen as a signal of a full review of the camera but do help put its image quality in context against its peers.

  • Astrophotography Timelapse – My First Night Out

    www.learningdslrvideo.com I have always been a sucker for really well done astro timelapse from people like Tom Lowe, TSO Photography and Randy Halverson. This past weekend I drove up into the mountains for a camping weekend with my oldest daughter. Every so often my wife and I like to split up our girls so we can get some one on one time with each girl. I knew we would get a chance to talk and tell ghost stories around the campfire. My photography goal for this trip was to try my first time lapse of the stars, I had ideas of grandeur of quality equal to Tom Lowe and others, and I was even more excited to try after I watched Tom Guilmette’s awesome BTS video about Timefest. When I packed up the car in the morning there was not a cloud in the sky, however as we drove up to RMNP the clouds started forming. The previous weekend with my other daughter I got rain out at night and didn’t want a repeat performance from Mother nature. By the time we setup up camp it started to drizzle. It rained on our hike but after that the clouds started to break up giving me some hope that we would have a clear night sky. Long’s Peak The object of the timelapse was Long’s Peak. Years ago I climbed this 14256′ mountain with a friend in what turned out to be the nasty night camping ever, instead of starting out at 2am to start the hike with a day pack and head lamp on, my friend and I decided to take heavy packs in the afternoon and camp in the boulder field just below the sharp cliffs you see …

  • Rediscovering Backlit Subjects

    “Look where the sun is coming from – then position yourself with your back towards it so that it light up your subject’s face.”

    This was the very first piece of photographic advice that I was ever given as a child entrusted with the family’s camera for a school excursion.

    The intention behind it was good and in many photographic situations over the years it has actually served me well.

    However…. sometimes in photography it can be easy to get trapped in a mindset that actually limits the potential of your shots.

    My suspicion is that many people are being limited by the above piece of advice – lighting your subject from the front and avoiding back lighting at all costs.

    The problem with ignoring back lighting images is that:

    • backlight can add drama to an image
    • backlit images can show the delicacy of a subject (think transparent or translucent things like flowers or insects)
    • backlight can help create real mood in a shot
    • backlit images can highlight details on the edges of subjects
    • backlight can reveal textures that might previously have been hidden
    • backlit images can show off the shape and form of a subject
    • backlight can create shadows that add points of interest to an image

    I’m not arguing that backlit subjects are the way you should approach every shot – but ignoring it as an option ca leave you potentially missing out on a very powerful technique.

    Check out some of the following images that show the beauty of power of ignoring the age old advice of always lighting a subject from the front.

    PS: just because your subject is backlit doesn’t mean you need to forget about how they are lit from the front. Using a Fill Flash and/or some sort of reflector is often a great way to get the balance right for a well exposed shot.

  • Lori Komejan at San Francisco Lion House

    Every once in a while  I look back in my photo library and I stumble across something I’ve overlooked that ends up surprising me. Most of the time it’s a scenic photo as I highlighted in a past post Always Check Your Seconds. Last week though while conducting an image search for a client I stumbled across an image from 2004 of former San Francisco Zoo Keeper Lori Komejan at the Lion House. This particular image really caught me off guard. Why?

    Lori Komejan suffered a horrible work place accident at the the San Francisco Zoo when a tiger was able to grab her arm and pull it through it’s cage. The accident happened during a public feeding with a large crowd present. She survived, but the news story behind it was horrifying. Knowing what happened to her and seeing this image that was taken 2 years prior to the accident in 2006 was haunting, especially seeing how closely positioned she was to the cage at the Lion House in this photo. Since the accident happened there have been extra safeguards put in place including an extra layer of metal bars with smaller openings added to the lower portion of the cage.

    All in all a very eerie experience to discover this photo.
