Nikon Coolpix L830 provides 34x zoom on a budget

CES 2014: Nikon’s compact announcements for CES include the Coolpix L830, a budget-oriented 34x superzoom. It’s equipped with a 16 megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor and a tilting 3.0-inch 921k-dot LCD. The L830 records full HD 1080p video with new Hybrid Vibration Reduction stabilization available while recording video. Available in February, the L830 is powered by AA batteries.

Small cameras, large zoom: Canon’s new PowerShot ELPH 340 and SX600

CES 2014: Canon has unveiled two new low-cost cameras that pack big zoom lenses into compact bodies. The PowerShot ELPH 340 HS (known as the Ixus 265 HS in Europe) is slim and stylish, and sports a 25-200mm equiv. lens, 16 megapixel CMOS sensor, and 3-inch LCD. The SX600 is just a bit larger than the ELPH, but gains an 18X, 25-450mm equiv. lens along with 1080/60p video recording. Both cameras have Wi-Fi with NFC, which Canon says is easier to use than on previous models, plus numerous scene modes and special effects.

Fujifilm announces XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS wideangle zoom

Fujifilm has announced the XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS, a premium ultra-wideangle zoom lens for the company’s X system mirrorless cameras. It offers an angle of view equivalent to 15-36mm on full frame, and incorporates optical image stabilisation to reduce blur at slow shutter speeds when shooting hand-held. It also has an aperture control ring on the barrel, and is compatible with the company’s Lens Modulation Optimizer function. It’ll be available from March 2014 for $ 999.95 / £849.99.

Tamron announces availability of 150-600mm F/5-6.3 telephoto zoom

Tamron has announced that its SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD telephoto zoom will go on sale on December 19th in Japan, and 17th January 2014 in the USA. The lens will feature optical image stabilization and an Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus motor, and be compatible with both full frame and APS-C SLRs. It will be available first in Canon mount, with Nikon and Sony versions to follow. Pricing is still to be confirmed.

Tamron to develop 150-600mm F5-6.3 ultra-telephoto zoom

Tamron has announced the development of a 150-600mm F5-6.3 zoom lens for full-frame and APS-C sensor cameras. It will feature 20 elements in 13 groups and have a minimum focus distance of 2.7m. Tamron will also include VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) technologies. The lens will be developed for Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts.

Ricoh launches Pentax Q-mount ultra-wide-angle zoom

Ricoh has announced the PENTAX-08 WIDE ZOOM lens for Q-mount interchangeable lens cameras. The ultra-wide-angle compact weighs in at 75g and when mounted to the Pentax Q7 provides an equivalent focal length of 17.5mm to 27mm (in 35mm format). Weather-resistant Pentax Limited 20-40mm F2.8-4 zoom lens announced

Ricoh has announced the HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED, the first zoom lens in its Limited series. It boasts a weather-resistant build (another Limited first) and provides an equivalent focal of length 30.5-61.5mm in 35mm terms when mounted to a Pentax K-mount DSLR body. Super zoom? Olympus Stylus 1 First Impressions Review

Up until recently, the only ‘real’ premium superzoom camera was the Panasonic DMC-FZ200. Two weeks ago Sony made a big splash with their pricey Cyber-shot RX10, which features a 1″-type sensor. The Olympus Stylus 1 slots in nicely somewhere between the two, offering a 1/1.7″-type sensor and constant F2.8, 28-300mm equivalent lens in an OM-D-style body.
