Sound of the Earth: Vinyl Globe Plays Music of the World

24 Oct

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

This is more than just a model of the globe: it’s a spherical record player that will produce the sounds of a particular region when spun. The Sound of the Earth by Yuri Suzuki is just one of the designer’s incredibly innovative sonic products and installations. Suzuki spent four years traveling the world to collect samples of folk songs, national anthems and other audio.

Referring to the globe as ‘an aural journey around the world in 30 minutes,’ Suzuki explains that he wanted to bring all of the music of his travels together in one place.

Other projects include Barcode Book, which tells a story through illustrations made with bar codes, which are scanned with a hand-held reader, and Sound Taxi. The latter project is a vintage taxi equipped with a microphone that records urban sounds like traffic, sirens and construction work, and uses them to generate unique music in real time, which is played via 67 built-in speakers and big, shiny Indian horns mounted on the roof and hood.

“A few years ago my hard drive crashed and I lost my entire 500GB music collection,” Suzuki told The Guardian. “From then on, music held in physical objects seemed safer.”

Video Tours Take You Around the World in Just One Minute

20 Oct

[ By Delana in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Most of us will never have the time or resources to travel all around the world – but for the lucky few who can make that trip, it’s a life-changing experience. “Regular guy” filmmakers Rick Mereki, Tim White and Andrew Lees undertook a grueling trip of 11 countries in 44 days. They filmed everything and later compiled it into three of the most beautiful, interesting short travel films ever made.

By the time they were done, the trio had traveled 38,000 miles and recorded over a terabyte of travel footage. They cut, mixed and stitched the footage together to create three one-minute films. “Move” shows Andrew (the actor of the group) walking in various places around the world.

“Learn” is a rather amazing compilation of the adventurous things the filmmakers learned during their travels. They blow glass, build pizzas, dance, learn to cartwheel in front of the Eiffel Tower, and so many more things that the rest of us only wish we could do in some exotic location.

“Eat” is the final installment in the series, and it is a delicious look at the foods of the world. The guys were clearly a bit daring in their cuisine choices, eating everything from unidentifiable meat to a huge insect. Like the other films, this one inspires an intense wanderlust – so who wants to sponsor our trip around the world?

If you could make your own photo hack, what would it be? Personally, we’d figure out a way to make CatPaint real life.

Over a hundred developers dreamed even bigger at Photo Hack Day Berlin last week!

With judges from Facebook, Getty Images, and EyeEm and participants like the Loopcam & InstaCRT team, competition was fierce and yielded some amazing apps that we actually wish we had on our phone right now.

These were the top three winners!

2. Tourist Eraser: Kinda like Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill for your phone. It detects tourists in your photo and erases them without you having to do any work.
3. Visual Weather: Pulls together Flickr photos of what the weather looked like on a day similar to today’s. (To figure out what to wear & such!)
