Olympus PEN E-P5 preview updated with more impressions and samples

30 May

ep5-520.jpg

We’ve had a chance to take another look at an ‘initial production’ Olympus PEN E-P5, and have updated our preview with some more first impressions and image samples. Olympus has only allowed us to publish downsampled images, but we’ve still been able to get more of an idea of how well the camera works. We hope to get our hands on a production E-P5 that we can use to shoot full size images towards the middle of June, but until then click through for our preview to whet your appetite.

Fujifilm X-series studio comparisons updated with new ACR 7.4 raw process

06 Apr

newplugin_2.jpg

Following the recent public release of Adobe Camera Raw 7.4, we’ve updated our studio comparison database with new raw conversions of files from the Fujifilm X-Pro 1, X-E1 and X100S. We’ve been using the release candidate version of ACR 7.4 for some time, which contained significant improvements to Adobe’s treatment of files from Fujifilm’s X-TRANS sensors. The official public release version of ACR 7.4 brings some further (very minor) tweaks. Click through for links to the studio comparison pages in our X-Pro 1 and X-E1 reviews, and X100S preview, now with ACR 7.4 raw conversions.

Nikon D7100 preview updated with a look at effect of OLPF omission

05 Apr

D7100_18_105_front.png

In the course of preparing our in-depth review of the Nikon D7100, we’re exploring the potential image quality advantages of Nikon’s decision to forgo an optical low pass filter (OLPF). As part of this process, we compared the D7100 alongside the Nikon D5200, which also uses a 24MP APS-C sensor, but includes an OLPF and have just added the results to our hands-on preview. Does the D7100’s lack of OLPF really make a difference? Click through to read what we’ve found.

We’ve just received a reviewable Nikon D7100, and have been lucky enough to get access to pre-release raw support from Adobe, which has allowed us to add Nikon’s newest 24MP DSLR to our studio comparison database. We’ve also taken advantage of our first opportunity to shoot ‘real world’ images with the D7100 and its 18-105 kit lens at a range of ISO sensitivities. Adobe updated Raw support for Fujifilm X-Trans tested

26 Feb

Tram_JPEG.jpg

The latest release candidates of Adobe Camera Raw (7.4) and Lightroom (4.4) include improved demosaicing logic for Fujifilm’s X-Trans sensor cameras, including the flagship X-Pro1. We found previous ACR versions struggled with fine detail and color accuracy, so were anxious to re-process our X-Pro1 files in ACR 7.4 RC. Is this the update X-Pro1 owners have been waiting for? Have a look at our results.

Just posted: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 review updated with lens data

22 Feb

Sony_RX1.jpg

We’ve updated our Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 review with an additional page of lens data, brought to you in collaboration with DxOMark. The RX1’s headline feature may well be its 24MP full frame image sensor, but the fixed Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens is an equally crucial part of its imaging chain. We’ve added a full set of technical lens measurements to our review to illustrate how it performs, presented in our unique data widget. You can also see how it measures up against the best 35mm lenses available for SLRs.

Welcome to the Newly Updated dPS Forum

19 Feb

Within days of starting dPS – back in April 2006 – I began to get requests from readers that they wanted a forum area on the site where they could:

  • Share photos that they were taking
  • Get critiques from other readers on their shots
  • Ask (and answer) questions of other photographers
  • Share their own tips
  • Meet, network with and have a little fun with other photographers

A few months later we did add a little forum to the site. It started very small with just a few sections and members but from day 1 was a place where dPS readers could do all of the above – and more.

Dps forums

Since that time our forums have continued to grow and evolve. We have over 235,000 members and our categories of discussion have grown from just a handful to cover many topics including:

  • Assignments – where we give members a weekly assigment to shoot
  • How I Took it – share a shot and give the behind the scenes info on how it was taken
  • Before and After – show off your post processing sculls
  • Earning with Photography – an area for discussion of monetization of photography
  • Share Your Shots – how off some of your best shots (in a range of categories)
  • Critique – submit an image and get feedback from other members
  • Lighting – discussion on how to light your images
  • Tutorials – share and read tutorials from other members
  • Photography Equipment and Gear – discussion, reviews and questions on different brands of cameras and gear

There is a lot more than that too!

Over the last few months we’ve been planning a forum upgrade as a result of some broken features and an inundation of spammers and in the last week have completed the upgrade to a new version of the forum software.

It took an enormous effort from our developers (who are still working to iron out a few bugs) but things are much more stable now and if you’re looking for a place to ask a question, interact with other photographer or share your own tips we’d love to welcome you to the dPS forum.

Over the coming months we intend to roll out more changes both to the forum and blog part of dPS – so stay tuned for some more fun developments that we hope will make our site even more useful to you.
