This 12K NYC flyover video was captured with three 8K RED Weapon Monstro VV cameras

LA-based director and cinematographer Phil Holland of PHFX recently joined forces with Gotham Film Works to create something out-of-this-world. Using the first Shotover K1 Hammerhead Aerial Camera Array, Holland shot a flyover of New York City using not one, not two, but three 8K RED Weapon Monstro VistaVision cameras.

The result, once processed, is a 100MP motion picture made up of images “with a sensor size of approximately 645 medium format film.” Put another way, the 12K by 8K footage above is 48.5 times the resolution of 1080p.

Holland explains how the rig was used and the footage captured in a short behind the scenes blog post, where he also shared some BTS images that he is kindly allowing us to repost for you here:

Holland’s BTS post covers camera and lens selection, before moving on to explain what it takes to rig something like this up.

“On a technical level there’s a lot that needs to happen in terms of proper spacing, finding the zero parallax point, lens selection, determining your overlap, rigging, payload balancing, etc.” writes Holland. “Every RED Weapon 8K VV Monstro has a JETPACK SDI Module attached to sync genlock, provide power, control the camera, etc. This is actually one of the first times I’ve ever seen this bad boy used to maximum intent. WIthout this module something like this would be very difficult to pull off.”

All of this allowed Holland to control the rig from a single “brain” and create “a quality stitch with pixel and frame accuracy.”

The folks over at Adorama TV have a series of 2-minute tips by David Bergman which I think is brilliant! You can watch one while you’re standing in line at the grocery store, waiting for your food at a restaurant, or when you only have a limited time.

iFixit teardown reveals OIS on all three cameras in the Huawei P20 Pro

The team at iFixit has performed its usual teardown on the new Huawei P20 Pro triple-cam equipped smartphone to assess the device’s repairability. The score for the latter is 4/10—which means it’s probably advisable to leave repairs to trained service personnel—but far more interesting to us photographers is the detailed look iFixit got at the Huawei triple-camera setup.

You can see the full teardown here, but the main and most pleasant surprise is that Huawei actually built in more stabilization than their specs revealed.

In the official Huawei specifications, only the tele-lens with 80mm equivalent focal length is listed as optically stabilized, while the RGB main camera and the the monochrome secondary unit rely on the Kirin chipset’s neural processing unit for ensuring sharp images. However, according to the iFixit engineers, all three cameras come equipped with OIS hardware, which makes us wonder if there are plans to activate this hardware via a firmware update at some point in the future.

The image above shows the triple-camera in all its glory. The primary RGB camera is placed at the center of the setup and uses a large 40MP 1/1.7 inch sensor with an F1.8 aperture and a maximum ISO setting of 102,400, on the left you can see the 20 MP monochrome camera with F/1.6 aperture, and the 8MP/F2.4 telephoto is on the right. Next to the triple-camera the engineers have placed the 24MP front unit.

I still remember the Christmas (many, many years ago) I got my Polaroid and the little note on it said: “Open me first.” Since that time I have taken 1000s of photos. However, it wasn’t until recently that I began to take the time and learn what was needed to take photographs that others would also enjoy. I have learned quite a bit in the last couple years. The biggest thing I have learned…is that I still have a lot to learn. Nikon D850 Filmmaker’s Kit includes Atomos Ninja Flame, three lenses and two microphones

Nikon looks to be positioning its D850 as a serious video rig with today’s announcement of a D850 Filmmaker’s Kit. The kit includes the camera body, three AF-S Nikkor lenses (20mm F1.8G ED, 35mm F1.8G ED, 85mm F1.8G), an Atomos Ninja Flame external recorder, ME-1 shotgun and ME-W1 wireless mics and an extra EN-EL15A battery.

Purchased separately, these items cost nearly $ 6300, so the kit’s MSRP of $ 5499 is a nice discount. The Filmmaker’s Kit will be available for purchase in late March.

Cosina announced three new Voigtlander lenses at CP+

Japanese optical manufacturer Cosina has announced three new lenses at the CP+ show in Yokohama. The trio consists of two lenses for full frame Sony E-Mount cameras, and a new Nokton 50mm F1.2 lens that will come with a Leica M fitting.

COLOR-SKOPAR 21mm F3.5 Aspherical | Sony E-mount

The COLOR-SKOPAR 21mm F3.5 Aspherical is designed for Sony E-mount cameras and measures only 39.9mm in length. Its 10-bladed iris promises attractive out-of-focus highlights, while the closest focus will be 20cm (~7.9 inches). The optical design uses nine elements in eight groups, and Cosina claims the lens has excellent contrast and resolving power even when used wide open.

The lens will be manual focus, and will feature electronic contact with the camera.

MACRO APO-LANTHAR 110mm F2.5 | Sony E-mount

The other E-mount lens is the MACRO APO – LANTHAR 110mm F2.5, which will offer close-up shooters 1:1 reproduction from a closest focus point of 35cm (~13.8 inches). Cosina says it aims to eliminate chromatic aberration, and that it will use a floating focus group to ensure maximum sharpness at all focusing distances.

The optical design packs 14 elements in 12 groups into a 99.7mm long housing, and the iris will contain 10 blades. Again, focus is manual, but electronic contacts allow the lens to communicate with the camera.

NOKTON 50mm F1.2 Aspherical | Leica M

The lens for Leica M-mount cameras is a new standard NOKTON 50mm F1.2 Aspherical VM that will feature two double aspherical lenses and a coupled rangefinder focusing system.

Cosina claims the lenses performs very well wide open, and that it will produce attractive blur in out-of-focus areas. The 12-bladed iris will contribute to the out-of-focus effect, and the closest focusing distance of 70cm (~27.5 inches) will ensure users can make the most of it. The 4.9cm-long lens will use eight elements in six groups and will accept filters in the 52mm fitting.

This lens joins the existing 50mm F1.1 and F1.5 versions in the Voigtlander Nokton series.


Cosina has not said yet when these lenses will be available or how much they will cost when they arrive; however, the company did have working reference samples on display at the show that visitors could try on their own cameras, so it’s reasonable to expect that we won’t have to wait too long.

For now, the Voigtlander website hasn’t been updated to include the new lenses.

Lorrie – Grand Prize Winner

As with all bird photographers, I am really wanting a longer lens to “Get That Shot”. I am a regular reader of Digital Photography School. Today I was on your page looking for an article on aperture. I was hoping to understand aperture the best I can to make certain I am getting it correct for absolute sharpness. I was also wanting to understand how I should adjust aperture for the distance of subjects. I strive for sharp images with great focus. Suddenly I ran across this contest and I was like “Oh my Gosh!!” I have to enter!!

I love Tamron lenses. I am familiar with the Tamron web page. I visited today for the most up to date information on the Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD. I am certain it will improve my photography in so many ways. I know it is far more than just a birding lens. I know Tamron lenses produces high-quality, sharp images with excellent color. I have extreme confidence in the lenses knowing I can take them out and use them in less than perfect weather conditions and they will not be frail. I have also watched several videos on YouTube by different reviewers stating the Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD is a value and is far superior to any other lens in this category! The lens is certainly on my wishlist! Thank you!! Best Always!!

The more I researched the three lenses, the harder it became to decide which one would be my top pick!

Thank you for doing this contest, it has helped me learn more about these lenses, and even if I don’t win any of the lenses I have been helped by this. I think that my top pick would be the Tamron SP 35mm f1.8. It is a very versatile lens that would be helpful for me in shooting portraits and getting clear shots of everyday life. I love that it is f/1.8, it will create stunning pictures with subjects that have that “pop.” It is also wide-angle which would be very nice to have! I am an 18-year-old amateur photographer and I look forward to using every piece of gear for capturing neat images of people and other wonderful things that God created.

Debra – Third Prize Winner

I live on 40 acres in southern California. On December 4th, everything burned in the Thomas Fire. I was able to get out with my camera bag but not my lens bag. I am living in a trailer on my property waiting to rebuild my house. At first, there was no life, not even a fly. The first life I saw was a stray hornet. Then the birds came back. Green is starting to sprout from the burned flora that I thought was dead and gone. I would have loved to record the return of wildlife but all I had in my camera bag was my Canon 5D Mark III, a nifty 50 and a kit lens. I feel like I am on a photo challenge.

I would love the Tamron SP 70-300mm Di VC USD to give me more range to document the changing details of my new landscape. The 70- 300mm range would be perfect for capturing returning insects, rabbits looking for fresh greens and the coyotes that hunt them. I am drawn to the ultrasonic silent drive to prevent startling my subjects and capture sharp images faster. Most of the wildlife ventures out at dusk so the vibration compensation would help with longer shutter speeds.

Meike teases three new lenses: 50mm F1.7, 25mm F2.0 and 25mm T2.2

Chinese accessory and optical manufacturer Meike has posted a picture on its website of three lenses it intends to launch in the coming months. Two stills lenses are promised, a 50mm and a 25mm, as well as a 25mm designed for movie shooters.

It is reported that the first will be a 50mm F1.7 for mirrorless systems—including the Canon EOS M mount—which is due in the middle of next month. A 25mm F2 shown in the same graphic is quite a different design to the 50mm, and different also from Meike’s existing mirrorless and APS-C range of lenses, so it isn’t easy to guess what systems this model will be aimed at. The third lens is a 25mm T2.2 Cinema lens, which appears to be the company’s first foray into this video market.

Finally, as for how much these lenses might cost, it’s worth noting that the company’s current 50mm F2 retails for about $ 80… so they tend to be pretty affordable.
