We’ve been working on a brand-new studio comparison scene for some time, and we’ve decided to give you a sneak peak, using images from the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7. We’ll be speaking more about this new scene (and the new interface that goes with it) very soon, but for now we wanted to let you have a look, try it, play around and tell us what you think. As well as the new scene, you’ll notice two new options – ‘daylight’ and ‘low light’ simulation modes and the option to ‘normalize’ resolution to simulate print and web output, as well as 100%. Click through for a link.

16 Jul

18-35-news.png

We’ve just updated our preview of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM with lens test data, courtesy of DxOMark. This lens has generated a lot of excitement as the fastest zoom ever made for SLRs, but the big question is whether its speed comes at the cost of optical quality. We’ve looked into this by comparing the 18-35mm to some current benchmark designs – and the results may surprise you. Click through to read all about it.

Test Your Geography Skills with Google Maps Game

14 May

[ By Steph in Global & Travel & Places. ]

GeoGuessr Google Maps Game 1

Can you guess where in the world this unidentified Google Maps location is by landscape, road signs, architecture and cars? Test your geography skills with GeoGuessr, a site that drops you into a random Street View and challenges you to answer correctly five times in a row. Brilliantly simple, this virtual travel guessing game will stump you with featureless fields, and city scenes that seem to belong on entirely different continents.

GeoGuessr Google Maps Game 2

Once placed in a location, you can move up and down the streets and use the arrows to view it in 360 degrees, just like on Google Maps and Google Earth. Sometimes, you might get lucky, and see some kind of identifying signs. Sometimes, there’s nothing but farmland and trees.

GeoGeussr Google Maps Game 3

When you think you’ve determined the location, drop a pin on the world map on the right side of the screen and make your guess. You might be surprised how many times you’re about as off as you can possibly be. Some streets in Northern Canada look an awful lot like those in Argentina. Try it for yourself at GeoGuessr.com (via Laughing Squid).

We put the HTC One’s ultrapixels to the test

30 Mar

Untitled-3.jpg

With its new flagship smartphone, the HTC One, the Taiwanese manufacturer is aiming to improve image quality over its rivals by using using fewer but larger pixels on a sensor that’s the same size as the higher-resolution competition. However, the HTC One’s advantages are not all about pixels — the phone’s camera also features optical image stabilization and a fast F2.0 lens. We have shot a range of samples in varying conditions and are having a closer look at the HTC’s image quality on connect.dpreview.com.

Report zooms in on giant camera resolution test charts throughout the US

19 Feb

eglin_afb_fl_target.jpg

Dozens of two-dimentional aerial photo calibration targets are scattered all across the United States, according to a report by the Center for Land Use Interpretation. Constructed mostly during the 1950s and 1960s, these large outdoor charts were used as ‘a platform to test, calibrate, and focus aerial cameras traveling at different speeds and altitudes.’ The report points out that although some of these ‘charts’ are still used for some optical camera testing and calibration, they are primarily relics of the past. Click through for more information, and images.

Canon 35mm 1.4 Bokeh Test Low Light

15 Feb

low light, bokeh test with my Canon 35mm 1.4 on a 7D. Between 100 – 800 ISO.

Video demonstrating the wide and zoom capabilities of Nikon’s 18-300mm AF-S lens. Like I mention in the video, it is a bit heavy. Although considering how many lenses it replaces, it is a pleasure. However, compared to Tamron’s 18-270mm, it is noticeably heavier. Perhaps I’ll make a video comparing the two (Tamron 18-270mm to the Nikon 18-300mm) …thoughts? Enjoy!
