  • Sigma demos WR Ceramic lens filter strength with impact test

In a newly released video, Sigma tests the strength of its protective ceramic lens filters in an impact test. Putting claims of toughness to the test, the video shows a 49g / 1.7oz metal ball dropped from a height of about 1.3m / 4ft onto the WR Ceramic Protector as well as three competing lens filters. While the ceramic protector survives unscathed, the competition isn’t so lucky.

In addition to its WR Ceramic Protector, the video features a ‘conventional protector,’ ‘Brand A Chemically Strengthened Glass Protector,’ and a ‘Brand B Chemically Strengthened Glass UV Filter.’ According to Sigma, the WR Ceramic Protector is 1000% stronger than a conventional protector and 300% stronger than a chemically strengthened glass filter. The ceramic filters are also scratch-resistant with a water-repellant coating.

Sigma has a half dozen new WR Ceramic Protectors available now:

    • 67mm for $ 93 USD
    • 72mm for $ 108 USD
    • 77mm for $ 118 USD
    • 86mm for $ 202 USD
    • 95mm for $ 247 USD
    • 105mm for $ 315 USD

  • Field Test: Brad Puet and the Fujifilm X-T10

In our most recent Field Test, we took Fujifilm’s X-T10 out onto the streets of Seattle with local photographer Brad Puet. After capturing our street portraits we went about making some prints, first with Fujifilm’s lovely SP-1 Instax printer, and then something a little bigger. See for yourself how the X-T10’s images stand up to exhibition-quality printing.

In this field test we follow photographer Kiliii Fish to the Arctic – specifically, the tiny fishing village of Barrow, Alaska. Using the Canon EOS Rebel T6i – Canon’s 24MP entry-level DSLR – Kiliii has come to Barrow to document how the indigenous population is adapting to the changing environment up here in the far North.

  • Video Field Test: Theron Humphrey and the Sony A7R II

For our latest Field Test video we went not-quite south of the border to Marfa, Texas. There, photographer Theron Humphrey and his internet-famous dog Maddie help us test the Sony Alpha 7R II and a collection of Sony FE lenses. Despite the oppressive heat and rough roads of Big Bend National Park, the impressive sunsets are well worth the trip. Read more

  • Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II added to studio test scene

The Sony RX1R II is the kind of camera that turns heads. With a full-frame 42.2MP sensor, fixed 35mm F2 lens, optical variable low pass filter and a 399-point phase-detect AF system that’s much improved over its predecessor, it’s just about in a class of its own. We’ve had a full-production model for a few hours – just enough time to get it into the studio to see how it handles our test scene. Read more

  • Into the woods: Samsung NX500 Field Test

It’s not often we get to eat what we photograph, but that’s what we did in our latest Field Test. We took the Samsung NX500 into the woods with pro photographer and mycology enthusiast Eirik Johnson to forage for some wild mushrooms. While providing a keen eye to make sure we didn’t try to eat anything poisonous, Eirik also helped us try out the NX500’s imaging and 4K video features. Read more

  • Tripod Review: Gorillapod Focus Field Test

I personally have one of these guys and find it extremely handy for travel and using in places where you either aren’t allowed to have a tripod, or don’t want to haul a big heavy one around. Check out what you can do with the Gorillapod Focus with X ball head kit in this video from Big Iris Productions.

They put it in some pretty challenging situations and gave it a mixed review. I would add that I find it to work great just to put your DSLR onto and walk around with. I did that while travelling in Spain – put the camera on Gorillapod, and the strap around my neck as usual  – but then just rested the legs of the tripod on my hip. It takes all the weight off your neck and I found it really comfortable to walk around that way, ready to shoot.

  • Sony RX10ii Field Test

Chris and Jordan from The Camera Store put the Sony RX10ii through it’s paces from both the still and video side of things.

They look at whether it has made big improvements over the previous iteration of this camera, and who it is best suited for. Have a watch of this if you are considering getting this camera, it may help you decide if it’s for you or not:

The guys seem to think this is a great hybrid camera, sort of an all-in-one. If you just want one camera that does good video, good still images, just grab and go, the Sony RX10 MarkII might be a good choice for you.
