Rare 1964 NASA 1000mm F4.5 super telephoto lens to be auctioned

A one-of-a-kind Birns and Sawyer Omnitar 1000mm f/4.5 lens commissioned by NASA in 1964 will soon be available to purchase through RR Auction. The lens is owned by Jim Headley, who introduced it to the public via Shutterbug. According to Headley, the lens weighs 70lbs / 32kg and measures 4ft / 1.2m in length by 10in / 25cm in diameter.

The super telephoto lens was built by Astra in Germany, and was acquired by Headley through a close friend after that friend closed down his camera store. Headly says on his website that he adapted the lens to work with a Canon EOS 40D, ‘effectively making this a 1600mm f:4.5 lens with the digital crop.’ The lens still features a pair of NASA identification tags, as well as a ‘trash can-sized’ lens shade. 

Headley plans to part with the giant lens, telling Shutterbug that it will be sold through an auction this fall by RR Auction in New Hampshire. Interested potential buyers can contact Jonathan Siefken at (603) 732-4280 for additional details.

Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Frank Doorhof Edition features ‘Super Soft Silver’ reflector

Rogue has introduced a new FlashBender 2 XL Pro reflector designed in collaboration with photographer Frank Doorhof. The reflector uses ‘Super Soft Silver’ fabric, a material that produces an effect that falls somewhere between the soft lighting created by white fabric and the harsher, more contrasty reflections of sliver fabric.

The FlashBender 2 XL Pro is the largest FlashBender model at 13in x 16in / 33cm x 41cm; it includes a belt and buckle for attachment to a flash, and an adjustable shape for altering the direction of light.

The Rogue FlashBender 2 XL Pro Super Soft Silver Reflector is available now from Rogue for $ 59.95.

Super stable: Panasonic GX85 pre-production sample gallery

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 / GX80 takes just about everything we like about the GX8 and crams it into a body size that’s a lot more in line with the older GX7. In the shrinking process, you lose the high-res tilting viewfinder, the new 20MP sensor and weather sealing. But don’t think you’re getting a bad deal; you gain Panasonic’s Dual-IS feature while recording 4K video (the first camera to do so), you get an updated 16MP chip that now lacks an anti-aliasing filter, and there’s a new JPEG mode dubbed L. Monochrome.

We’ve taken a pre-production GX85 with us around the Puget Sound region with a variety of lenses to see how it measures up.

Lee introduces 15-stop Super Stopper neutral density filter

Lee Filters has announced it is to offer a neutral density filter that converts what would normally be a two-second exposure into one that lasts 17 hours and 4 minutes. The new Super Stopper reduces the amount of light entering the lens by a massive 15 stops, to enable especially long shutter speeds in normal daylight conditions.

Available for the 100mm, SW150 and Sev5n ranges, the filter is made from what Lee describes as ‘high-quality optical glass’. It comes packaged in a protective tin case and has a lifetime warranty. The company says the filter induces only a slight color cast that it claims is easy to remove in post-production. It joins the 10-stop Big Stopper and the 6-stop Little Stopper in the company’s range of ND filters.

The filter factor of the Super Stopper is 3200 and it has a density of 4.5. It will be available soon, and the version for the SW150 series will cost $ 175. For more information on the company see the Lee Filters website – though the company hasn’t posted any details of the Super Stopper yet. CES 2016: Close up with Kodak’s new Super 8 movie camera

In a bit of a surprise, one of the hottest products to make an appearance at CES 2016 was an analog product: Kodak’s Super 8 movie camera. Built around the classic Super 8 film format, the camera does make some nods to contemporary digital technology: instead of an optical viewfinder there’s a flip out LCD screen, and there’s also a SD card slot for recording sound.

But the film is the real star of the show, and processing is included in the cost. If you’re into the retro thing looking to make some films (or even just someone on a quest for the nostalgic look of Super 8) this might be just the camera you need to go along with your vinyl albums. DPReview editor Dale Baskin talks with Kodak’s Josh Coon to learn a bit more about this camera.

Kodak revives Super 8 with part-digital cine camera

For the first time in over thirty years, Kodak has announced plans to launch a Super 8 cine camera, introducing a model that mixes analogue and digital technology. The new camera, which doesn’t appear to have a name other than Kodak Super 8 Camera, will record its movies on normal Super 8 film cartridges but will offer a digital LCD flip-out panel as viewfinder. In keep with the old slogan ‘You Press The Button, We Do The Rest’, Kodak says that cartridges will be sold with processing included and that customers will receive the film back as well as access to a scan of the film that they can download for more convenient editing. 

The camera comes with an integrated microphone for audio recording, and while the company hasn’t said specifically, it appears that sound is stored using SD memory cards via a slot on the camera’s rear. Super 8 film no longer comes with an audio track, so this seems the most likely solution. The camera is also equipped with three communication ports that may be used for streaming content out during recording, as well as for charging the battery. 

The camera will be capable of shooting at 9, 12, 18, 24 and 25 frames per second. It will come with either a Ricoh 6mm or 6-48mm lens, but its use of a C-Mount means it will be compatible with an enormous range of existing lenses. There appears to be two designs of the camera, one with retro squared edges, and one rounder and more modern-looking. 

Kodak currently offers three color negative Super 8 films under the Vision3 series: a 50 ISO daylight film and two tungsten emulsions rated at ISO 500 and 200. A black and white TRI-X reversal is also available. The films come in lengths of 50 feet and the cameras fit 72 frames of footage on to each foot, giving 3600 frames per cartridge. At 24 fps users will get two and half minutes of movie, and the cartridges take just a couple of seconds to exchange. 

The Super 8 system first went on sale in 1965 with the intention of making home movies easier to produce. The cartridge made loading the film much more convenient and less prone to jamming the camera than previous hand-threaded systems, and the cartridge could inform the camera what type of film was loaded, so amateurs made fewer mistakes. Sound recording came in 1973 when a magnetic strip was introduced, but it was phased out again in 1997 as the substance used to bond the strip to the film was hazardous. 

With its recording strips and automated cartridges the APS film system borrowed much from the ideals of Super 8, and this half digital, half film camera might remind us of Kodak’s Advantix Preview APS camera that recorded images on film but showed a digital preview on the rear screen.

Kodak hasn’t announced officially how much the new camera will be, but the company’s chief executive, Jeff Clarke, is quoted in the Wall Street Journal Digits blog as saying that it will arrive in fall 2016 and will cost between $ 400 and $ 750. The film should cost between $ 50 to $ 75 per cartridge, including processing. He also says a lower-cost model will emerge in 2017.

Super Pier: Green-Roofed Modular Cargo Container Mall for NYC

A massive 14,000-square-foot green roof is the latest addition to a city-approved pier conversion plan, part of an overall scheme to convert Pier 57 in New York City into an extensive modular shipping container mall on the water.

Developed by Youngwoo & Associates and designed by LOT-EK, famous for their extensive work with cargo containers, the SuperPier project will rent out retail space to stores in containers plugged into the larger existing structural framework.

Shade structures and seating are provided throughout to park area, allowing people to explore and rest along the length of the transformed open space. A series of plants organized to bloom in various seasons will add color year-round.

The project includes restaurants, an amphitheater and observation decks, all tucked into the currently-disused pier building.

As an historic landmark, external modifications like the park above must be carefully hidden from view, ultimately informing the design of the finished shapes and spaces. The result is a combination of historical facades and fresh interior and rooftop strategies.
